Editing in Camera Raw

Is there a way to edit .NEF files in camera raw and then saving in .jpg without affecting the original .NEF file? I am using Camera Raw 4.3.1 and CS-3.

Just to clarify what John said. The image data in your NEF file is never altered by ACR. All of the adjustments that you make to the file are saved as metadata. If you mean that you don't want the NEF file to reflect those changes after you save the JPEG image, just click on the Cancel button rather than the Done button after you have saved your JPEG image. If you do that, then ACR will not even write the changes to the metadata of your NEF file.
But even if you have clicked on the Done button and saved those settings, ypu can always clear the settings and restore the NEF file to its original state.

  • Bridge CS4 looses my labels and ratings if edited in Camera RAW

Hi there. This is my first post here, so please forgive me if I make any errors of normal posting procedure. I'm hoping someone might be able to identify this problem please.
    I am using Bridge CS4 v.3.0.0.464 and Photoshop CS4 v.11.0 and Camera RAW 5.0.0.178
On Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit service pack 2, and working mainly with jpg files from a Nikon D300s
I've noticed recently the following behaviour. If I label and/or rate some photos in Bridge, and then open those photos via Camera RAW, and then make adjustments to those photos in Camera RAW and open them directly from there into Photoshop, then the original file in Bridge looses all it's rating and label info, and shows a new modified date and time as of that moment.
This only seems to happen if I actually edit the photo in Camera RAW, I do not ask to save it (and remember these are JPG files so as I understand it any changes in Camera RAW would not be saved unless I ask to resave the file itself) but to open it directly into Photoshop (and I then save the finished work as a copy to a different place from Photoshop) but the act of making an edit in Camera RAW seems to affect the original file settings in some way, and that looses the labelling etc.
However, just a couple of days ago something even odder happened. I opened Bridge, navigated to a recent (and recently labelled) folder to browse some photos (at this point I had not opened either Camera RAW or Photoshop and was not doing editing of any sort). When I got to the folder I wanted and Bridge started to display the thumbnails, I immediately heard my hard drive working very hard, and watched as over the course of a few seconds all my labels, ratings etc, were erased from the files in that folder, you could actually see it happening in real time in the filter pane as the number of red-labelled photos counted down from 30 to 0, and the modified dates for those 30 shifted from two days before to the current time/date. it only happened for the labelled and/or rated photos, the others remained unchanged, with their modified dates still the same as when I created the folder a few days before. This has so far happened to me just once, a couple of days ago, it was as if Bridge was somehow refreshing a cache or something, and that caused it to to clear all the changes I had made.
Anyway, I couldn't really find any reference online or on these forums to that specific behaviour. After reading some slightly similar problems online I tried a few changes to settings. Allowing Bridge to automatically export the cache to folders where possible, and making sure that the main Adobe cache location is writable (not read only) in windows folder settings. However, although I have not yet had a repeat of the weird incident above, that hadn't happened before either so I cant really claim that I've cured it. But moreover the issue of loosing labels/rating when editing with Camera RAW still persists consistantly even after those changes, so that is definitely still a problem
Can anyone shed any light please? if it's a known problem, a flaw, or maybe (hopefully) can be sorted with some settings that I have missed.
    Thanks for any help
    Best regards
    Will

Welcome to the froum.  Your submittal was great.
I don't know if this will fix your problems, but you need to update to the current versions and see where that takes you.  Click on Downloads/updates at top of page.
You have Bridge CS4 v.3.0.0.464 and Photoshop CS4 v.11.0 and Camera RAW 5.0.0.178.  Don't know what current version of Bridge is, but you need PS v. 11.0.1 which fixed a number of mistakes.  Also, the current RAW is 5.6 I believe.  I am still on CS3.

Edits, keywords, and rating can be stored in the XMP file.  This has the same name as the file and needs to move with the file or you will loose info.  If you move or rename the file, and don't use Bridge, this file could be left behind.  You can see this file in Bridge, if you have show hidden files clicked in View.  You can look at it in Windows Explorer if you have "show hidden files".
Check to see if you have an XMP file in the new location.  If not then do you workflow in stages and see if you have an XMP file after edits before you save it to another location.
    Hope this helps.

  • CC & PS WON'T LAUNCH / BRIDGE WON'T LET ME EDIT IN CAMERA RAW

I'm on Mac OS X. First problem I encountered today was that Bridge would not let me edit in Camera Raw. It gave me this warning:
Camera Raw editing is not enabled.
Camera Raw editing requires that a qualifying product
has been launched at least once to enable this feature
I tried launching PS and my short cut bounces in my dock like it is going to open, then nothing happens. Same thing when I try to launch CC or the Uninstall manager. So I found on a different forum to run the Adobe Cleaner and it did the same thing. Have many projects I have to complete for my job. Thanks in advance for any help!

...Turns out the ONE obvious thing I hadn't tried was to go into the CC App itself, into preferences, then log out of my Adobe account and back in again - fixed the issue!
I couldn't believe its so simple and feel a bit stupid - but I had completely uninstalled the main CC App then re-downloaded it from Adobe, it downloaded already logged in as I was logged in on the website.
I hope this helps someone else with the same issue, as I had scoured the forums and the Adobe FAQ pages and hadn't found any solution. I stumbled across this whilst waiting for an agent to answer on the live chat!

  • How do I edit in Camera Raw?

The only option for editing a file is in Photoshop CS4, but I want to edit in Camera RAW. How do I set this up?

So how could I solve this?
In Lightroom, select "Save metadata to file" in the metadata menu in Library for the image you want to edit. Then Right (or control) click on it and from the popup select "Show in Finder/Explorer". Then a Finder (or Explorer) window will open where you can double click the RAW file (if you have set up Photoshop as the default editor for them), or you can drag the RAW file on Photoshop. ACR will open and you can do any edit you want. If editing the point curve is all you wanted, click on "Done". Now go back to Lightroom and for the image, select "read metadata from file" from the metadata menu. Lightroom will read in the new recipe in the xmp sidecar and update your image, including the point curve! You can only not edit it in Lightroom, but it will use it just fine.

  • No longer able to view NEF files in Bridge or edit in Camera Raw 4.6

I have found similar questions in various Adobe forums, but I have not located a solution to my problem.
    Bridge CS3
    Photoshop CS3 Extended
    XP
    Camera Raw version 4.6.0.30
    Nikon D300s
Up until 2 weeks ago I have been copying my NEF files from my CF card via reader, opening Bridge, selecting thumbnail of NEF and opening it in Photoshop CS3. At which point I can process with Camera Raw 4.6.
Now, once new NEF files copied and Bridge opened, I only see NEF icons. When I double click the file, Photoshop opens and a box appears with the following text: Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document.
Upon inspecting the differences between NEF files that I can edit and the new NEF files that I cannot, I notice in the metadata file properties that the application of the successful files is ver. 2.00 and the duds is ver. 1.00.
What "application" is the metadata referring to? I think this may be a Nikon setting, but it would help me understand the problem better if I knew what "application" this is.
I can convert the new NEF files into jpgs using Adobe DNG Converter, but this GREATLY complicates a previously straightforward work flow process.
Thank you for any light that may be shed on vexing dilemma,
    Kate

Very grateful for your response and time.
The Application I am talking about can be found when you open up a NEF file in Bridge and look at the Metadata tab on the right. Within that is the File Properties tab and the Application Ver. is the 3rd item from the top (after Filename and Document Type).
Yes, I do have only the one ACR file (Camera Raw.8bi.) in the program file/COMMON FILE/Adobe/plug ins/cs3/file formats.
I have also realized (brilliantly late in the game) that it is only the NEF files shot from my new D300s that do not work. No problem with the NEF files shot with my D100. So this leads me to conclude that my Bridge/Photoshop CS3 does not support the Camera Raw 5 that seems to be required for the D300s. Argh.
By upgrading my camera equipment, I have outmoded my requisite software.
I must say, that the recent post advisory on the forum site ("Raw files appear as icons") was supremely timely. While this does not solve my problem, it did help me understand the compatibility issues with the D300s and CS3. I have learned the following: D300s are supported by Camera Raw 5.5 which does not work with CS3. Is this correct?
    Dazed, but not beaten down,
    Kate

  • Editted in Camera Raw Indicator missing with Adobe Bridge CS6, Mountain Lion

    Hi there,
I have always been using bridge for many years to edit my photo in RAW. last week I just moved to Mac from PC.
Usually, when I am using PC, after I editted my RAW file using Camera RAW 6.5, usually on the right corner of the thumbnail,it would show indicator showing that the RAW file has been editted.
But the indicator didn't how under Mac OS. Is there any option to turn that back on? The indicator really helps differentiate between RAW files and JPEG files
    Thank you in advance,
    Best Regards,

  • Editing in Camera Raw with Bridge in CS6

Whenever I try to edit an image with Bridge I get a message saying:  "Camera Raw editing is not enabled.  Camera Raw requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature"   I have looked throughout the Adobe site and have not found an answer to my problem.    Thanks....

This message usually occurs when you have an expired Adobe trial.  Bridge is waiting for program to respond.  Search your directory and uninstall the trial.

  • Cannot edit in camera raw

just completed a new install of CS5 on iMac and, when attempting to open an image in Camera Raw from Bridge, I get the dialog message,"Camera Raw editing is not enabled.  Camera Raw editing requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature."     I  have launched Photoshop.  What am I not doing?

For me in Windows just using Photoshop's Open works when the file is a RAW-type file, with an NEF or CR2 extension.
If you don't have just an Open on a Mac, then do you have an Open As... and then can you change the File Type to Camera RAW then click Done or Open or Ok or whatever it says?

  • 32 bit HDR panorama .tiff editable in Camera Raw???

I recently did a photoshoot with a car. It was the first time that I planned to professionally use 32 bit HDR merging. I shot 4 exposures of the front of the car from the side, and shot another 4 at the same brackets of the back of the car while mounted on the tripod.
    Here's exactly what I'm trying to do;
Take 2 different 32 bit TIFFs
Align them to be a panorama
Export to a single, true 32 bit TIFF
Adjust & tone that 32 bit panorama TIFF in Camera Raw
I've worked with panoramas plenty of times, but when I take the 32 bit TIFF files into photoshop, I pass through CR without doing anything. Once the TIFFs are in PS, they are converted to an 8 bit mode automatically.
I also tried to take those 8 bit TIFFs, auto-align, switch back to 32 bit mode, and then export as a 32 bit TIFF. I then took the panorama 32 bit TIFF into Camera Raw, but obviously, the damage had already been done and it was not true 32 bit.
    Can anyone please help me?

I've done plenty of 32 bit editing. I love it!
    I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS6.
Right after I merge to HDR pro from Bridge, it is a 32 bit PSD (I pressume it is a PSD, but it does not say for sure because it hasn't been saved yet). But it is one, locked layer titled Background. It will not allow me to unlock or rename. When I use the transform tool to move the layer to the other 32 bit document containing an identically attributed layer (It is the rest of the panorama), it just shows me a black prohibition sign and doesn't let me move it.

  • Help render the raw files edited with camera raw how?

    Hi
    i have a problem
i use  bridge cs5 (updated) to browse my raw files
often i open my raw files with camera raw inside bridge cs5 and make some corrections like exposure , saturation , contrast and so on
but after bridge doesn't re-render the files
i mean the thumbs ,previews , the slideshow still are in default setting
when i click and open with camera raw inside bridge or with photoshop cs5 ,the raw files look with corretions
but again bridge show me not with the corrections
    i run under w7 32bit
    what could be the problem?
    thanks

    mantralightroom wrote:
i see previews and thumbs with the edits but with a big delay
    thanks
If you are using HQ On Demand you will get fast thumbnails, but there will be a delay in generating the preview as Bridge builds it.
The Always HQ takes more space, but faster as the data is already in cache.
    Hope this helps.

  • While editing in Camera Raw, software stops working and starts spooling

Anyone out there that might have a solution. While editing photos in camera raw, software starts to spool and continues. Only way out is to push power button on iMac to turn it off.

Provide the name of the program you are using so a Moderator may move this message to the correct program forum
The Cloud is not a program, it is a delivery process... a program would be Photoshop or InDesign or Muse or ???

  • Edit in Camera Raw?

So I'm trying the Lightroom trial. I like it, and everything, but there's one problem that's nagging at me. I can set up an "external editor" other than Photoshop, but I can't find any way to set up Camera Raw as an external editor. Opening in Photoshop doesn't go through this phase, and anything else seems to want to export the bitmap rather than open the DNG directly.
Unfortunately, the "Tone Curve" control in lightroom is not very useful compared to the one in ACR, which is the main thing. I can't see living with the thing pretending to be "Tone Curve" in Lightroom, and already really miss the Curves control in ACR.
If there's no way to launch ACR hosted by Lightroom... is there really no way to get a file into it and back out without going out to the file and opening it the old-fashioned way? This is going to be a big pain.

Lightroom seems to have a great workflow advantage over the Bridge/ACR route. The main problem with Lightroom is the "Tone Curve" adjustment UI, which is relatively useless compared to what's available in ACR.
The sliders in Lightroom seem a little touchy and imprecise compared to ACR, too, but that's trivial and not worth worrying about much. Lightroom in general is really nice, and I'm very tempted to buy the thing, but the ability to send things into another raw processor and back easily would be nice, because the Tone Curve thing in Lightroom is not at all good, while the one in ACR was a revelation in photo processing.
The Export thing doesn't open in ACR if you tell it to go to Photoshop. That makes perfect sense, actually -- if I want to go to Photoshop, I want to go to Photoshop. What I actually want is to go to ACR and not Photoshop at all, just tweak some things in ACR and come right back into Lightroom with ACR's changes in the DNG file. Oh well. You can do it manually by going to the file in the Finder and opening it in Photoshop, so I'll see if I can live with that, and if so, buy Lightroom.
As for "why use Lightroom at all", well, it's just one serious problem area, in an otherwise seemingly-great application, and one hopes they might fix it in the future. I mean, it's a big step forward, except the Tone Curve thing, which is an enormous step backward.

  • Suddenly unable to save files edited in camera raw

Mac Pro, 2 TB drive, 8 GB RAM, lots of empty HD space.  Nikon D4 RAW files
After using camera RAW to process thousands of photos and saving in jpg with this equipment, suddenly I get a message in a window, "the file could not be saved".  I haven't changed any settings.  I can work around by opening in PS and saving. Emptied cache and didn't resolve issue.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks
    Don

Also, I no longer get anything in "File Naming" after "Example:". I'm wondering if Camera RAW has beome corrupted,
Not sure if I can follow your workflow because you also have files in iPhoto and Image Capture which settings both are not compatible with each other as with Camera Raw.
But you have two options to use ACR, either in PS or in Bridge. Select a problem file and with right mouse click menu choose Open in Camera Raw, this opens the file in ACR using Bridge, the normal open command opens ACR in PS.
This to see if it happens in both applications. If not reset prefs for the problem application, if both then maybe manual reinstall ACR plug in.
But in all cases, can you provide more details about OS version and exact PS, Bridge and ACR version (the latter in PS, menu Photoshop, about plug in / camera raw)

  • Cannot view edits made in Camera Raw

I am a new user of CS5.  I shoot in RAW and upload my photos and I do some edits in Camera Raw (crop, brightness, exposure, etc.).  When I click Done in Camera Raw and return to Bridge, I can no longer see the edits on my files.  My files are marked with the symbols to show that edits have been made to the file, but the edits are not visible unless I go back and reopen the file in Camera Raw.
    Some additional info:
    Canon 60D
    Camera Raw Version 6.3.0.79

I finally found another area to check, thanks to your reply.  I found the box to change the options for thumbnail quality and changed it to "Generate 100% Previews" and this seems to do the trick.  I had been going through the Edit dropdowns over & over and thought I should/would find something there but never could find it.  Looks like it was "hiding" elsewhere!  Thanks!!

  • PSE 9 cannot export camera raw edited files to a jpeg format.  Only available save as formats are photoshop and tiff.

In PSE 9  I am currently unable to save files that have been edited in camera raw as jpeg files.  When I try to export the file using 'save as'  the only listed options are versions of photoshop file formats and tiff - jpeg is not listed.  I did not have this problem previously when using Nikon D3000 camera. I now use a Nikon D7100. I have installed the 6.5 Camera Raw update but this has not solved the problem.  I would appreciate any suggestions for resolving this.
    Margaret

You have a 16-bit image and jpeg is an 8 bit format. You can set the raw converter to export as 8 bit by using the pulldown menu below the preview area, or you can just go to Image>Mode>8 bits/channel in the editor.
