Editing in Photoshop vs Edit view on double-click?

Recently redoing preferences in iPhoto 4, I was thinking again that it would be nice to have those 2 choices be separately controlled, not alternates. I use Photoshop quite a lot, but not on every photo, and in iPhoto I'm used to the double click giving me the edit view, for browsing, sorting and deleting files.
In general I like iPhoto better than Bridge for an image browser, with its Mail & print options. And Bridge doesn't do well with over 100 or so images in a folder, while iPhoto will handle 8000 at least.
Rather than exporting a copy and using Photoshop from there (& that's too much hard drive space), I guess I can go into Preferences and change the setting every time I want to use Photoshop or go back to browsing, but what a nuisance. A different way to open in Photoshop would be much more convenient, leaving the double-click still enabled for edit view. Does anybody know if that's in the more recent versions of iPhoto? Or is there some other way to do this?
.

Choose PhotoShop as your preferred external editor in iPhoto preferences, but don't select that radio button. After that, a double click on a thumbnail in iPhoto will open the image in iPhoto; but a control-click (or right-click, if you have a two-button mouse) will bring up a contextual menu where you can choose to open the image in the external editor you set in preferences.
Just remember, if you choose to save the edited copy with a different name (and/or in a different format), use "Save As..." to save it back to a location outside of your current iPhoto Library so you don't corrupt your iPhoto database.

  • Bridge Does Not Automatically Bring Up Photoshop When the Photo is Double-Clicked

I have just purchased CS4 with Bridge for my new MacIntosh.  In Bridge for the PC, when I double click a photo it automatically brings up Photoshop.  On the Mac version, it gives me an error message saying that part of the application is not loaded.  I completely uninstalled the program, and reloaded the application and still get the same message.  So in Bridge on the Mac, to get around this, I right click the picture and go to "Open With" and there are two entries:  "Open with CS4 (default)" and "Open with CS4."  This works if I pick either option.  My Windows version only has "Open with CS4 (default)" as the option.
I called Adobe support (in India?) with no solution.
I really like the double click option rather that using the pop-out menu choice.  What is wrong with the Mac install, and how can I fix this issue?

Thank you for your help.  I updated the software and it "healed" itself.

This might mean that you have either 2 installs of CS4 (one on an other
disk?) or you did not use the the default application folder on root level
but have it installed in the user account application folder. Could you
    check this?

    Hi Ron,
Highlight one in the Finder & do as Get Info on it, what does open With say to use?
What did you update 10.8.2 from exactly? 10.6.8 maybe?

  • Edit CSS using Code View when double-clicking in CSS Panel

In CS4, when I wanted to open a linked style sheet for editing, I could right click or double click any CSS entry in the CSS panel to Go to Code. This would open the style sheet and goes to the line where the rule is defined. It's properly set in the Preference pane to Edit using Code view but hasn't worked ever since upgrading to CS5 and it is a real hinderance on my productivity.
Does anyone else have this problem. More importantly what is the fix?
(I noticed this question had been asked before but was never answered http://forums.adobe.com/message/210015)

OK, I may have found something. It seems to be an issue with template (.dwt) files. Can you reproduce and test this theory?
When I open a template child page, everything seems to work as expected.  It doesn't seem like I can reproduce your symptoms.

  • Editing in Photoshop CS2 and Viewing in iPhoto

I have iPhoto 6 and Photoshop CS2. I would like to do my RAW file edits in Photoshop CS2, but if that image is already in my iPhoto library and I make changes to the file in Photoshop, will iPhoto regenerate a new thumbnail for the changes when I open iPhoto up again?? I will be accessing my photos from my iPhoto library in Photoshop, but I was just wondering if it will mess something up in iPhoto after the changes are made...??? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I have been looking for the same info. Check out this post - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1787687&#1787687.
This is a work around as the combination of iPhoto and PS (or any other external editor) does not yield a complete solution. If you edit out of iPhoto, you end up having to reimport the image which means that iPhoto now has 2 versions of it and you do not have the ability to "Revert to Original".

  • When edit in photoshop, the edited image is added to the catalog in a duplicate of the same volume..

    Ok, this is realy strange...
    I edit in photoshop a cr2 file from a canon 20d
Once done with the edit, i clic save in photoshop
The file is saved as a tif but, in the folder view in the library, i now have 2 instances of the same volume...
In the first instance of that volume, the one that should be there, i do not see the new edited tif file (& the file count did not went up by 1)but in the second instance of the same volume, i now have only the new tif file under that directory...
    here is what i see...
    Local Disk (E:)
    Wedding 8718
    Peter & Josée 499
    Local Disk (E:)
Peter & Josée 1 (this one is the tif after the edit in PS)
If i detete the tif, then right-clic Remove the directory Peter & Josée under the second instance of Local Disk (E:), the second instant of the volume will be gone as well.
It does that every time i edit in photoshop.

    I noticed something...
Looking at the metadata of both files, i found a little difference in the folder field information in metadata...
My original cr2 file in the real volume has this in the folder field... E:\Wedding\Peter and Josée... notice it start with a capitale E
The file in the "ghost folder" under the duplicate of the same volume has: e:\Wedding\Peter and Josée... lowercase for the drive letter
When i reinstall the previous version of Camera Raw, i have the message in LR saying i need 4.5 for full compatibility... i clic render using LR, and it works... But this time both files start with a capitale E in the folder field in metadata...

  • Editing in Photoshop loses edits previously made in Aperture

Repeatedly after I have cropped and edited a photo in Aperture then selected Edit in Photoshop, once the image opens in photoshop, the edits are gone except for the crop. What is the issue?

Make sure you run Lightroom 2.1. Many bugs regarding this were fixed in that update. Photoshop CS3 needs to have ACR 4.6. Likely it will work fine if you make sure you install those two.
Most of the times when people think this does not work it is because they are in the wrong view (for example a filtered view) to see the edited file show up, or the sorting behavior of the view is wrong making the file show up all the way at the bottom instead of right next to your edit. The best way to see what happens is to be in Folder View or in All Photographs with all filters turned off and with sorting turned to capture time.

  • LR3 - Cannot edit in Photoshop CS4 ("Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments")

Having just purchased LR3, it seems that when I select "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments", that the LR adjustments aren't being carried across into CS4. I am only given the original file in PS.
    Is this a known bug?

So what do you think might be the problem, Dorin?
I don't know. I haven't seen a bug (assuming it is indeed a bug, and not an operator error) like this is mentioned here in the forums.
This issue is going to affect my business in a major way.
If this is so critical to your business, you can use a workaround meanwhile.
Use the regular export command with the following options:
File type: PSD/TIFF; other relevant filetype options.
    Location: same as original photo.
Add to this catalog: checked. Stack with original: as needed.
    Post-processing: open in Photoshop.
Save this as an Export presets and invoke it from the File->Export with Preset from the menu.
The end result is the same as Edit in Photoshop.

  • How to get back to regular arrange view after double clicking on a rex file

Hi. How do I get back to the regular arrange view where I can see all of my tracks in the arrange window. I had double clicked on one of the tracks which was a rex file. • Audio and video don't open together in viewer when double clicked

    Hello everyone!
I'm having an annoying problem... it isn't something terribly important, but has decreased my work flow speed. Recently, I've had some trouble opening clips from the timeline in the viewer with the double click.
If I double click the video portion of the clip, even if both the video and two audio tracks are highlighted (and are still linked) only the video portion of the clip will appear (along with "filters" and "motion" tabs) in the viewer, and similarly when double clicking the audio tracks, though both video and audio are highlighted, only the audio tracks and "Filters" tab show up in the viewer. Additionally, once the item is double clicked at the left with the jigsaw pieces that can be used to set video and audio destinations, if I've clicked on an audio portion so only audio shows up in the viewer, only the jigsaw pieces for the two audio tracks (a1, a2) are visible, video track (v1) is no longer present, and vice versa.
I'd appreciate any advice that you all have! It's really driving me batty, in addition to not knowing what I did to make it that way, I can't figure out how to change it back!
    Heather

    Thanks for the advice.
The clips already appeared to be linked, and the selection "link" was checked, however when I unlinked and then relinked I found that the audio and video would open up at the same time in the viewer... problem apparently solved! However, the clips I had been working with I had to nudge audio and video a few frames apart (out of sync) to get the audio and video to line up. (gives the little red box with a +or- number in it on the clip).
When I unlinked and then relinked, the clip lost those red boxes and went back to being synced (as far as FCP is concerned) with the audio and video unaligned.
So, the problem appears to be coming from when I move the audio and video of a clip out of sync... why is this? Is this something I'm just going to have to deal with?
    Thanks

  • Problem editing - can see thumbnail, but blank when double click on photo

I just upgraded to iLife 08 and encountered a host of problems. I had about 5000+ photos. Now I suddenly have 7000+. There are a ton of duplicates that I don't know what to do with. Moreover, I can't edit my photos. I've changed the preferences around, but nothing works. When I try to click on the thumbnail to edit the photo, a blank page appears. It looks like I can manipulate it, as when I press rotate, the thumbnail rotates. However, I cannot view anything but the thumbnail. Pls help!

    victoria:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    , a blank page appears.
Is the box gray with an ! in the middle or is it white? If it's the latter then there's a permission issue. Sodownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
If it's the former and Terence's recommendation doesn't work you may be looking at starting fresh with a new library and importing the original photos from the old library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photoshop CS5 edits not showing in Lightroom

Experiencing strange behavior and would appreciate any advice...
Am editing .CR2 files, then doing Edit in > Photoshop CS5 > Edit with Lightroom Adjustments and "Stack with Original".  All goes fine until I save and the new image is now displayed in LR.  If I want to do a subsequent edit to the now-stacked .psd file, using Edit in > Photoshop CS5 > Edit Original, then saving, those edits are not showing up in Lightroom.  Strangest is that if I then do Edit in > Photoshop CS5 > Edit Original to the file again, my edits are there in Photoshop.
I think this is an issue with Lightroom updating / syncing its preview (I'm looking at these in both Grid and Loupe) so that I can't see the latest version of what I edited.  Also, sometimes I can get it to update by changing zoom levels and having LR go back to re-recreate the preview (I assume).  I have also seen this behavior (it's more obvious in this case) when doing B&W conversions and the preview keeps flipping back and forth from color to B&W.
I assume this is a bug, but is there any way to force the previews to update as a workaround?  Don't really use the print module, but changes also appear to not be reflected in the Web module, so concerned about what my output will look like.
    Thanks.

Well, just found one solution...   Library > Previews > Discard 1:1 previews and then zooming in on each photo in the Library (Loupe) forced the update.  This needs to get fixed!!

  • After editing in Photoshop, unable to save

I'm on a Mac, using LR 3.2 and Photoshop CS4. My image files are on a network drive. Catalog of course is local (since we can't work with networked catalogs).
If I right-click a PSD (not raw file) in Lighroom and "Edit in Photoshop", then edit, when I'm done editing and hit "Save" I get an error message that the file is open/in use by another application. My only option appears to be to "save as" a new file in Photoshop...THEN import that new file in LR...THEN add it to the collection I was working from...THEN delete the old PSD from the collection...THEN delete the old PSD from the drive - since I don't really want to save a bunch of incremental PSDs (that's what layers in Photoshop are for).
I saw a couple of older posts here about the same problem, with older versions of LR. At least one case the user was on a PC, not a Mac.
Is this because I'm working with files on a network volume? Any workarounds?
    Man it's irritating...
    - Bob

    Yep - it works locally.
I had similar problems back when using Expression Media/iView MediaPro - wouldn't let me delete files from the network drive. Perhaps it's related to when I try to delete files in the finder, and get a "this can't be undone" warning.
Well, I got all excited about the idea of launching Photoshop edits from within LR, but I guess I'll go back to my "old" way, which was to export, then go to Photoshop and open the exported file, and work on it. I think if LR doesn't think it's currently managing the file somehow, it won't try to hold onto it and so Photoshop can save without running into problems.
Adobe - maybe this can be addressed?

  • Multiple Edits in Photoshop not saving into Lightroom?

In Lightroom 3 I was able to edit in Photoshop, save the file, then make another edit in photoshop and save it under a different name, and that file would also show up in Lightroom.
    For example;
in Lightroom I select "Image 1" and select edit in photoshop,
I edit this in photoshop and save.
    Lightroom shows "Image 1-edit"
I make another edit and select "Save As" and save it as "Image 1 Alternate".
"Image 1 Alternate" shows up in Lightroom next to "Image 1-edit"
This does not appear to be happening with Lightroom 4. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
    Thanks for your replies

    Medic1542 wrote:
Additional "save as" edits are saved into Lightroom 3. It does not "break the link".
I'm assuming here that you are using Photoshop CS5.x and the current version of Camera Raw? If so, this is as expected...LR4 is using a pipeline that will match up to ACR 7 when it's released.
As it is now, LR4 must actually do the processing prior tp sending it to Photoshop. LR4 also has to save the file on disk prior to sending it to Photoshop.
If you were using ACR 7 in CS6 then ACR would actually be doing the processing and the behavior of this way of opening in Photoshop does NOT have to save the file prior to sending it to Photoshop. When ACR does the opening, you can do a Save or a Save As and Lightroom will know about those saves. Pretty LR4 doesn't know where the Save As file goes to and that's why it isn't showing up.
The two basic behaviors; LR synced with ACR and LR not synced with ACR goes back to version 2 (I think). It's a limitation in LR when LR and ACR aren't in sync.
