Editing iPhoto photos in external editor, i.e., PSE

iMac running Mavericks OS.
From iPhoto, when I click a photo to edit in external editor (PSE), I am taken to the pse editor, but my photo is not.
Why is the photo not appearing?

Because you chose the logical file instead of the correct one as your external editor. The PSE icon at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen. The actual editor is buried way down in support files:

  • New Photo in OS X option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!

    Hi
I have just updated my iPhoto to Photos in OS X and i have noticed that the option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!
Its now a pain to send a photo directly to my favourite photo editing software.

    Thanks Terence
Totally understand being a new app and not an update.
So i'm a ammeter photographer and i like the way i can view my photos in iPhoto and i'm happy with the new App for this also, however i like to edit my photos in PS from time to time and i shoot in raw. As i can no longer select edit in external editor from the photo app i tired to drag a RAW photo to PS but this didn't work. i then tried dragging to desktop but this then made a jpeg so i loose my raw advantage. I would like to be able to find my original raw photos easily so i can edit them in PS.
    Hope that makes sense?

  • External edit function not opening photo in external editor

Hi folks , hope you can help , my external editor function in lightroom 4 has stopped working ie It will open the external edit space but the image does not open in that space any ideas . Your help much appreciated

You cannot use iphoto that way. PSE can't open photos from iphoto because if it were to write to your iphoto library it could easily corrupt it and cause the loss of all the images there. You should NEVER poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto.
    You have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from iphoto. Save, not save as without changing the name or format and iphoto will remember your last saved edits and the original, but you will need to lose the edits to revert back to the original. You will need to go to the PSE preferences>saving files and set On First Save to Save over existing to make this work. When you see the Save As window, something is wrong.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use file>open in the editor and make all the changes you want, then save your image in any format or with any name you like and import the edited photo back to iphoto as a new file. This lets you save as many versions of your photo as you like.

  • Edit photo in external editor with LR adjustment doesnt work

Hi, Im on Win xp sp2 LR 1.2.
When i try the "edit a copy with lightroom adjustments" i get a Warning and the following massage: "Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file (name) for editing, It will not be opened.". Whats weird is that lightroom creates the file and its right there if i go to that folder, it just doest open the external editor to continue and edit the file.
-Notice that "Edit a copy" or "Edit original" works! so there is a connection between the apps but it doesn't work with this option checked.
I did a test and created a new catalog, added some pics to it and tried the same procedure and it works just fine, so that leads me to think that its a catalog related problem but thats why im here, to ask you guys.
-Ive read other posts of the same Warning Massage but its not the same problem im experiencing.
Have a catalog of 25000 photos, im sure its not a lot to some but it has all sorts of collections and tags and colors (u know, the usual mess) so i wanna avoid going into "export as catalog" feature and re-import my catalog all over again.
Maybe its a registry problem maybe not.
    Any help is welcome, thanks.

I have no idea, but have you tried File / Catalog Settings/ General tab: Relaunch and Optimize. Relates to the database.

  • Editing iPhoto photos in Photoshop Elements 4--5+ photos in the bin?

    Hi,
PSE4 is my preferred photo editor in iPhoto. When I attempt to edit/open more than 4 iPhoto photos at a time (which, given my preferred photo editor setting, automatically opens the photos for editing in PSE4), only a maximum of 4 photos appear at a time in the PSE4 Photo Bin. Why is this? I have opened many dozens of photos simultaneously in PSE4 before, all stored without a problem in the photo bin... Please help!
    Thanks,
    Maine

    Maine
iPhoto will send no more than 4 pics at a time to an external editor. This is to avoid inexperienced users inadvertently opening their entire library in their editor. There is no way around this.

  • Editing iPhoto photos in Photoshop CS4 and saving a copy

I'm relatively new to Mac and am trying to figure out my workflow. I like a lot of the features of iPhoto, but I'm struggling with something critical.
Typically, when I edit a jpeg in photoshop, i like to save the modified version as a copy either with a -01 suffix or I create another folder in the file's original folder named 'Revised' or something like that and save the copies in there. I don't see how I can get the iPhoto event to update to include the added file. It seems clear that it definitely won't add the folder.
I've noticed that Lightroom does the same thing. Once a folder is imported, it doesn't seem to go back and check to see if changes were made in an external program.
Perhaps it's possible to force an update, but that doesn't really solve it either, unless I'm willing to go in and update the folder/event after every edit I make is PS.
Anyone know if I'm missing something or have a recommendation on how to work more effectively?
    Thanks!

If you're not editing RAW file then the following may be of some help to you:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Can I edit JPEGS in an external editor, NOT TIFFS?

    Hi,
I've been using Aperture for a while now, but I Just got photoshop and I'd like to edit some photos (JPEGs not RAWs) in Photoshop. When I edit them, Aperture converts the files to HUGE TIFFs and I can edit and save the TIFF in photoshop and then a new image appears in my aperture library (a TIFF) with the edits. That's all fine and everything, but how do I convert my newly edited TIFF back into a JPEG? I don't see any advantage to having a 50 MB TIFF file instead of a 2 MB JPEG (and the original TIFF was converted to a jpeg, so any compression artifacts are actually stored in the TIFF).

    J-a-x wrote:
That sort of sounds like an archaic way of doing it. Why is it that iPhoto lets me edit a jpeg in an external editor no problem but not Aperture. Does that mean that Aperture, despite being a "pro" application is less advanced in this sense than iPhoto?
No. Editing in JPEG is not part of a professional workflow. JPEG is a (useful) lossy format used for final file delivery only, and then only when absolutely necessary. iPhoto is aimed to include amateur users, so JPEG usage is facilitated to a degree that would be inappropriate for a professional app.

  • Using photos in external editor...

1.) When you edit an iPhoto photo in an external editor does iPhoto open up the original jpeg file in the external editor or is a copy?
2.) When saving a PSP file to iPhoto, is it saved as a PSP file that will retain access to the layers if I reopen it up in Photoshop or is it saved as a non-layerd jpeg?
Thanks in advance for any help!

iPhoto always preserves the Original file, so it's a copy.

Do you mean a .psd? If you import an psd to iPhoto it will be treated as a psd and preserve layers. Note though, that if your original was a jpeg and you're using Save As, this will be a new file, and that will have to be imported into iPhoto. (it's a new file as it's no longer a jpeg.)

  • Editing Shapes in an External Editor?

Edit Path in Keynote is nice, but there are times when it would really be handy to be edit Keynote shapes in an external editor. I can Copy/Paste a shape from Keynote into an external editor (like VectorDesigner) and edit it but whenever I copy a shape from an external editor (VectorDesigner, Intaglio, etc.) and paste it into Keynote, it always gets pasted as a PDF and I can't edit it further within Keynote.
Does anyone know a way of moving editable shapes from Keynote to another program and back again? I've tried saving as SVG in the external editor and doing an Insert Choose... in Keynote but it seems that Keynote always interprets things as non-editable PDFs.

Waaay back in the day when I realized how close SVG was to Keynote's shapes, I went around to all the Mac-only devs and pitched the idea. The only one that bit was the EazyDraw developers. A few emails later and we had a working solution (they even changed a feature to the app to accommodate one shape being cut out of the other). As of now, that is still the ONLY solution for exporting a shape document out of a drawing app directly to a Keynote file.
I'd thought that once that threshold was crossed, everyone else would be wanting to at least match that feat, but no go... I even talked to the companies in person at Macworld and still no interest. So, hat's off to Dekorra Graphics!

  • I have set up photoshop elements as external editor in iPhoto but I cannot get the edited photo to open in iPhoto. When I save the photo Elements asks where do I want to save it and iPhoto is not an option.

I have set up Photoshop Elements11 as the External Editor in iPhoto just as Terence Devlin said. However when I save the edited photo it does not appear in iPhoto. A drop down menu asks where I want to save the photo and I do not know what to choose. Also should I choose, "save" or "save as"? I should be really grateful for your help.

I suggest opening iPhoto and reverting back to iPhoto in the Preferences for photo editing. Quit iPhoto. Restart your Mac for good measure. Open iPhoto and again choose Photoshop Elements in Preferences as the editing app.
As far as editing, I don't have PE, but I have another editing app form the Mac App Store, ColorStrokes. I have been experimenting with using it for editing iPhoto photos and it works flawlessly. After setting ColorStroke as the editing app, I open a photo in iPhoto and click the Edit button in the menu bar below the photo. Color Stoke immediately opens with the photo and I complete my editing. When I have finished editing I choose to Save the photo, leave the name the same and agree to replace the iPhoto photo of the same name. I quit ColorStroke and the photo in iPhoto now has all of my edits from ColorStroke.
Should I decide that I prefer the original photo, I open the photo in iPhoto and choose Revert to Original in the Photos pulldown menu.

  • When using external editor, iPhoto does not re-import the .psd file

    Hi,
I've just started using Photoshop Elements 6 as a more advanced editor in iPhoto. When I do the 'External Edits' wihtout adding layers etc. and re-save as a JPEG then the photo will re-appear in iPhoto as the edited file.
However if I do the external edit and add layers then save as a .PSD, then the file does not update.. I have to save the .PSD file in a desktop folder then import the file after.
Is there anyway to force iPhoto to pick up the .PSD automatically after an update if I save it to the iPhoto library?
    Thanks,
    Glyn

If you import a psd file initially then you can edit it via the external editor, with or without layers, and do a normal save and iPhoto will recognize the changes.

  • IPhoto 11 bug when using external editor (Photoshop Elements)

In iPhoto 11, my iPhoto database is confused/corrupted whenever I edit a picture in my external editor (Photoshop Elements 8). I believe this is an iPhoto problem because the picture is not corrupted until I quit iPhoto try to re-open the edited version.
    Steps I take:
    1. Pick a file, and "Edit in External Editor". Duplicate of the file is made (ThisPic.jpg becomes ThisPic_2.jpg), and that duplicate is opened in PSE. I edit the photo in PSE, and hit Save - PSE updates ThisPic_2.jpg. I close PSE, go back to iPhoto, and I can do whatever I want to the file - double click to view larger, export, everything seems fine. When I pick "File | Reveal in Finder" and use either the "modified file" or "original file" option, they take me to ThisPic_2.jpg in the finder.
    2. Close iPhoto
    3. Re-open iPhoto
    4. Now, that file seems to be corrupt in iPhoto. I can see the thumbnail image for ThisPic_2.jpg, but nothing else works. I double click on the file, and I get a black screen with a triangle and an exclamation point in it. When I try to export the file, nothing happens.
The interesting thing is when I go into "File | Reveal in Finder". When I pick the "modified file", it doesn't seem to find it - I am shown the root of my hard drive in the finder. But when I pick "original file", it takes me to ThisPic_2.jpg, and I can use preview to see that my edits are still there.
I copied that file to the desktop, re-imported it into iPhoto, and I can access that photo again through iPhoto - everything works, even after I close and re-open iPhoto.
I reported this through the iPhoto Feedback option. I thought I'd share what I found in case it helps anyone else.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I get the same response when I follow your workflow. If you select the thumbnail of that photo and use the Photos ➙ Revert to Original menu option you will be able to view the photo in full size.
Evidently editing in iPhoto with an external editor puts the edits on the duplicated original file and puts that file in the same Masters subfolder as the first file was imported into. Once iPhoto is restarted the links are messed up and the Revert gets rid of the "edited" link and keeps the link to the file in the Masters folder.
It definitely is a bug. However, it's not taking up more space on the hard drive than the edit that resulted in a modified file linked to the original file. There still are just two files.
Subsequent edits to the file with the external editor result is the edits being added to the file with no problems if iPhoto is closed and relaunched. The downside is that if you make 3 edits to the file you can't go back one edit. It's non reversible. The edited version can be deleted leaving the untouched original version.
Subsequent edits to the same file with iPhoto work as usual, with a modified version being created.
So Old Toad, I have just gone from iPhoto 9 to iPhoto 11 and step by step this is what is happening for me.
In iPhoto 9 if I selected photoshop to alter an image it created one duplicate version of the image and put that into the modified folder and that edited image became the image you would see in the events viewer. All very logical.
Now iPhoto 11 is doing the same for me but is creating multiple duplicates ie. everytime I select photoshop to edit an image. One image I edited recently has now got 6 versions in the library. If that is the way iPhoto works then that will be fine as it is doing it's job for me but the caviat is have I got 6 times the memory space being used up or does it just appear that way? If the memory space useage isn't being increased then I am OK with this new way of doing things but if the memory space is being used up then it is a fiasco - especially as apple are concentrating on writing their systems to use up less space than before in line with current thinking.
Look forward to you clarifying this point if you can.
