Editing iPhoto pics Using Aperture 3 Help

I am using Aperture 3 to fine tune edit my iPhoto pics.  Question is....once its edited, how do I get the revised image to save or better replace the original in iPhoto (without dragging copying and pasting?)

You can't.
Aperture is not a photo editor like Photoshop, Acorn or Pixelmator.
Like iPhoto, it's a database. Images have to be imported to Aperture. To get them out agin they have to be exported.
Aperture is not an external editor for iPhoto.
It's a complete replacement for iPhoto.
You can share your previews with iPhoto - but that requires dragging from the Media Browser.
Honestly: you need to decide which app you want to manage your photos - Aperture or iPhoto and then forget the other one.

I'd like to permanently switch from iPhoto to Aperture 3. Is there a good way to convert my entire iPhoto library to Aperture format, AND include my Flagged and Edited iPhoto photos? I know I can make a Smart Album with the edited photos, but is there another way?

In Aperture go to: File>Import>iPhoto Library. Allan

  • Iphoto import of Original and Edited Iphoto versions from Aperture

I am using Aperture to improve some of my IPhoto 2008 edited pics. I'm keeping my Iphoto pics in their current location and importing selected ones to Aperture that I want to edit further. Following import of an IPhoto album to Aperture I could see both 'IPhoto Original', and 'IPhoto Edited' versions (great!). For some pics I have further edited the 'original' and for others I've further edited the 'IPhoto edited' version. For a few I've used Aperture to further edit/improve BOTH versions.
I imported the photos back into Iphoto but I can't see both the 'edited' and 'original' in the browser, I can see and import only the 'IPhoto edited' version - hence not seeing in iPhoto some pics I have edited and want to use.
What's the best way to get the other (ie both) versions into IPhoto? I want to create a book in Iphoto because I have additional Iphoto pics to include that don't need an Aperture edit. A key consideration is not eating up disk space.
    Thank you BW

BW -- just wanted to underscore nathan's excellent but (likely) unwelcome and perhaps easily ignored advice:
Don't use both applications for storing your pictures or for photo editing.
What you want to do -- use iPhoto (a superb program, imho) for image management of most image editing, and then export to Aperture for just a few images -- is a good idea on the face of it but difficult to implement and practically impossible to maintain.
Examine your options, take into proper account your experience and your needs, and choose one or the other ^1^. Images which need additional work which you can't accomplish in iPhoto should be edited using an external editor (such as PSCS5 or PSE or others).
    1. The programs (Aperture and iPhoto) are extremely different in concept and depth. Search the forum for some of those differences. Imho, Aperture takes 50x as long to learn as iPhoto. The curve is not steep, but it is long. Aperture is much more powerful than iPhoto.
PS: As soon as you can, get the largest fast internal drive you can afford. And make multiple back-ups of your Libraries. If you know you can always restore a Library, deleting one isn't terrifying.

  • Edit iPhoto book in Aperture

I have an iPhoto book I made prior to acquiring Aperture2. I would like to edit this book's photos in Aperture (i.e., using advanced editing features available in Aperture) and have the changes reflected in the book created with iPhoto. Is there a way to do that without having to re-create the entire book?
    Thanks in advance.

    No.

  • Will there be problems if I move referenced iphoto pics in aperture 3

If haven't imported my pictures from iphoto because I want to keep it around and don't want to have double libraries.
But what if I move or delete pics in aperture - which will be my main editor? Will they move in iphoto as well? I'm thinking this may cause problems in the long run.
Or am I just being paranoid?
    Thanks
    Frank

I'm sorry your question isn't clear.
If haven't imported my pictures from iphoto because I want to keep it around and don't want to have double libraries.
So: Guessing at what you're asking...
If you have referenced files in iPhoto and Aperture, then unless you deliberately trash the Masters, deleting the files from Aperture will not affect iPhoto, or vice versa.

  • Editing iPhoto pic in Photoshop Elements 4

I have read the messages of mainman and Dr. Livingstone regarding this issue and the replies but I do not have any option of choosing Photoshop Elements 4 in Preferences/General/Edit Photo which shows only "In Man Window", "Full Screen" "in Separate Window" and "in Lightroom" I have clicked on Lightroom and was taken to Applications where I selected Photoshop Elements 4 which now appears as a selection for editing photos. However, when I double click on a photo in iPhoto, it doesn't open in Photoshop. What else should I do or not do?
Also, from the Photoshop open menu, where to do I find iPhoto.app and where do I find iPhoto In Finder under Applications? iPhoto and iLife doesn't show up listed there.
Oh yes, iLife '08 and iPhoto '08 are the ones I use.
    Thanks for your help.

What happens after you've selected PSE in the iPhoto preferences and then double click on a thumbnail? Does PSE open at all? Is there any activity of any kind?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Editing iphoto Album using Pages 08

I had the issue of Mac Life that ran an editorial on how to incorporate pages with iphoto album. I THREW it out doing spring cleaning. Yes im an idiot.
So... are there any links on the web or here that can help assist me in learning how to combine the two programs to use for my benefit of making my album better?
    Thanks a million...
AND.. lol... if you happen to have a link to that issue ill gladly mow your lawn.

You can use a page or multiple pages from Pages or Keynote in iPhoto by doing a Print to PDF and selecting the Send PDF to iPhoto menu option. That will create a jpg version of each page of the document which is imported into iPhoto and can be used in an book page with a one photo per page layout, a slideshow, or any other iPhoto feautre just like any jpg file. I use it to make an iDVD slideshow of every book I create and order.

  • How can I restore a whole folder which (containing multiple albums) has disappeared - has disappeared from my iPhoto Library (using Aperture 3.5.1)?

Last time I saw the folder, it  had somehow moved inside another large folder, so I remember trying to move it back to its correct place.  Now it has vanished completely - along with all the albums and as far as I can see the events and photos to boot. Searching for some of the album titles brings up none of them.  And they're not in the trash. However, if I open the Library in iPhoto, the search button does find some of the missing photos - where Apertues found none. Why should that be?  I'm trying to restore the iPhotoLibrary from an arbitrary date a month ago in my CrashPlan database - this will take over two days. I used Time Machine to restore the Library as it was one month ago, but no dice. Does anybody have any ideas??
    Many thanks in advance!

I assume, you already checked, if the search filters in the Browser and Viewer are cleared?
Have you tried to repair or to rebuild the library?
To use the Aperture Library First Aid tools:
Press and hold the Option and Command keys as you start Aperture. The Aperture Library First Aid dialog will appear and offer the following three troubleshooting options:
Repair Permissions. Some issues in Aperture may be caused by incorrect permissions for items in the library. To correct the permissions for your library, select the option to Repair Permissions then click the Repair button. You must authenticate with a user name and password for a user account with administrative access to perform this operation.
Repair Database. Sometimes internal structures within the library may become damaged and cause unexpected behavior; you can use Repair Database to try to correct the issue. Select the option to Repair Database then click the Repair button.
Rebuild Database. For more severe issues that can't be corrected with Repair Permissions or Repair Database, you can try Rebuild Database. It is strongly recommended that you have a complete backup of your Aperture library before performing this operation, either in the form of a recently updated vault, or a Time Machine backup. Select the option to Rebuild Database then click the Rebuild button in the Aperture Library First Aid dialog.

  • Does anyone have an issue when they edit a pic using the built in editor on the 4s; and when you upload the edited pic or send it, the original one is sent. i even double check my photo in my album and it shows the edited pic

i have even double checked the album and the album has the EDITED pic but for some reason when uploaded or sent the original is what goes thru... makes me very irritated! not sure if its a setting or some bug... any suggestions???

I think it depends on how you share it.  Sometimes when I email it to myself it retains the edits, but I read that when people sync their phone it sometimes does not.

  • Can't edit clips to use as cutaways -- help!

    Hi,
I think I've hit a wall and what I want to do isn't possible.
I created a movie in Keynote and imported it into IM 09 to use as a cutaway. The problem is that one segment -- in the middle of it -- is three seconds too long. I need to get those three seconds out.
So, I split the clip in two and cut it down in the events section...but I can't rejoin those two segments now. "Join clip" is grayed out.
If I take the clip into the project area and split it there, I still can't join the two segments after the edit. Even if I could, I found that you can't activate the cutaway feature by dragging a clip that's already in the project area. Apparently, for cutaway to work, the clip has to be coming from the event pane.
I can't figure a workaround. If anybody has the answer to this, please let me know.
    Thanks!

just to mention: vers 8.0.3 (aka 'iM09') in use here, 'Advanced' options checked..
when you add some part of a clip in a Project, a small orange line in the Clip/Event indicates that..
in my workflow, this gives orientation, what part is in use, and from where I do have to 'ignore' 3sec, 'til I select the next xx secs from that clip (Event) to add it to the project..

  • Iphoto Pics on IDVD - why poor quality when shown on TV?

When I download IPhoto pics using IDVD and show them on my tv, the quality of the pictures is far less than when I view them on my computer screen.  Is there anything I can do to improve the quality?

This might help: iDVD 7.0 Help (iLife '08): Preparing images for iDVD slideshows.  If you intend to use the Ken Burns effect then I'd doulbe the size recommended in the above article.
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.  To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.
If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good and you can then burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available, 2x-4x, to assure the highest burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Aperture is a nice program, I use it myself for it's adjustment and light editing capabiities.
You can save a vault on another drive.

I still use Aperture 2.1.4.  I need to export an image file with a CMYK profile.  Whereas a generic CMYK profile is listed in ColorSync Utility, it does not appear on the list of profiles in the edit portion of the export preset dialogue.  Help?  Is there some way to add the CMYK profile to the list of choices that are available in the export preset dialogue such that I can choose it?

    leonieDF
Thanks for your response.  My profiles are located within color sync utility as you can see here:
These profiles do not respond to clicking and dragging.  Since they are all in one place, more or less, I'm reluctant to make further attempts to relocate them.  Accessing the CMYK profile is the first difficult experience I've encountered with this arrangement.  I have never needed the CMYK profile until recently, and that need has now past.  However, it remains a mystery to me as to why it does not appear with all the others on the menu of export choices in Aperture 2, or on the menu of profile assignment choices in the Preview application (where again all the other profiles are listed as choices).  I'm beginning to think my current set up will permit me to view an image that was created in CMYK space, but does not easily assign, or convert to that space.  I don't face these restrictions with all the others, so it remains a curious circumstance for me.  I anticipate upgrading my computer and software in the near future which might alleviate this issue altogether.  Again, many thanks for your attention to this matter.  The reach of this community is astounding.

  • Using both iPhoto and Aperture workflow help

I am using both aperture 3 and iPhoto 9 to edit and keep track of images
I imported images to iPhoto the have Aperture import the iPhoto library this way I have i library..I know if something happens to it I am screwed
    1) I know that Aperture is non destructive, is iPhoto?
    2) will changes ( like GPS location) in aperture be applied to iPhoto images
    3) looking to see if I can make changes made in one program appear in the other
    4) or it it better to import the images in from my external drive (how they were before iPhoto), and have a separate library for each program

Here's the best advice for using both iPhoto and Aperture:
Pick one horse and ride it. They both do the same job. If you're shooting Raw or high volumes of Jpeg, then definitely go with Aperture. If you're doing family snaps with a point and shoot stick with iPhoto. Using both adds unnecessary complexity to everything, and with complexity comes the risk of error and data loss.
    1) I know that Aperture is non destructive, is iPhoto?
Yes. In a wholly different way, mind you, but yes. WHen you edit an image in iPhoto it creates a new file called the Modified Version. You can always revert to the Original photo. If you edit only with iPhoto then you can also avoid generational loss.
    2) will changes ( like GPS location) in aperture be applied to iPhoto images
    No.
    3) looking to see if I can make changes made in one program appear in the other
    You can't.
    4) or it it better to import the images in from my external drive (how they were before iPhoto), and have a separate library for each program
It makes no sense to use both programs.
Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
The only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library.
What are you hoping to achieve by running both?

  • Using Aperture 2 to Edit Iphoto 08 Library

I imported my Iphoto 08 library into Aperture 2 as reference images so I can still view my iphoto library on my HD Samsung through my PS3 using Medialink, after I edit the images with Aperture. My question is will there be any problems if I edit / delete / change images in my iphoto using Aperture ? Are there any tricks or things to be careful about ? I don't want to corrupt my library. I am a recent convert to mac (SR Macbook) and iphoto 08 did a great job with importing and initial organizing the mess of photo from all my windows machines. Aperture 2 seems to have better editing and file management of my resultant 25000 + library. I'd like to use both iphoto and Aperture together.

I import into Iphoto first for a couple of reasons. If I have some videos on my camera, which i usually do, Iphoto will capture them for viewing or editing later. Aperture won't. Second, Time Machine works with Iphoto, not with Aperture. So backups are automatic with Iphoto. With Aperture, you can backup with vaults. I import all my images into Aperture (as referenced images) mostly so I can manage them, IE, organize using metadata, and place into folders by year / month, etc. Also, when you do edit in Aperture, no extra copies are made, like in Iphoto, because, Aperture takes the master from the iphoto library and applies your edits on the fly. You can continually edit and change the image in Aperture and it only will render and make a new image / master when you want to export.
As far as keeping track of various version of images, after organizing and editing in Aperture, you can place a rating on images, or place them in an album of good stuff (which is just a link to the real image), to then export into a new iphoto event of good stuff, etc
Alternately, you could import the images into Aperture as masters, and Aperture will make another copy, which means you'll have two of each image taking up twice as much space. Depending how many images and how much hard drive space you have will determine if this works. You could keep either or both Aperture and / or Iphoto libraries on external hard drives. You could import directly into Aperture and only export good stuff into iphoto, if you don't have any videos to manage and you're willing to backup with Aperture vault.
I setup the external editor in Aperture to use CS3 PS. When you select edit in external editor, Aperture renders a new master which you edit in PS and end up with a new master in Aperture.
Good luck. I went through several workflows with Aperture trial and almost gave up. In the end though, after I saw what Aperture can do, Iphoto along wasn't good enough and I came up with something that works for me.
