Editing IPTC (captions etc) data

Is there a way to edit IPTC data fields for pics either individually or as a batch from within iPhoto?
I know you can add keywords and comments to pics in the iPhoto library, but I want to edit other fields such as source, location, contact details etc. I can do it with Graphic Converter, but I like using iPhoto to view pics and want to be able to do the IPTC editing from that app.
I also like to change pic names to reflect the shooting date, which I at present do using the Nikon program I use to download pics from my camera. Again, I'd like to download via iPhoto, but it doesn't seem to have this name change option.
I know iPhoto is great to view, but not everyone uses it, so I like edit the IPTC fields/file names for when I send pics to people.
Any ideas?

iPhoto only write to the IPTC data on export. It has no ability to edit anything in the data except Name, Date and Comment.
In iPhoto you can Title a pic. This does not change the filename (as filenames are irrelevant in iPhoto), how ever, using the File -> Export command, you can use that title as a filename when you export from iPhoto.
It seems to me that you'd be best making the edits you want to the pics before importing them into iPhoto.
Alternatively, Aperture has all these capabilities.

IPTC caption written on Mac looks garbled on PC

Have had this issue for a long time so am trying again to discover an answer.
On a Mac running PS CC14, I've entered an extended caption into the IPTC (file info) description box. The caption includes quotation marks, pound/dollar symbols etc that are necessary.
However, when opening up this file on a PC running PS, the quotation marks and pound symbols etc come through as garbled text.
Does anyone know of a way of avoiding this?

Ok, this is a tricky problem. I've never experienced it myself, but I'll do what I can to get you to the right answer.
I use Bridge CC's Metadata panel for entering and editing IPTC data. The advantage there is that I can batch select pictures that have common items like authors and keywords. That's an alternative to directly using File Info in Photoshop and I wonder if the results might be better.
There are two types of IPTC metadata: IIM (legacy) and IPTC Core, both found in Bridge. While I'm not sure one type is garbling your text, IIM might be safer if you don't know what others are using to read it.
XMP is the Adobe standard for carrying IPTC metadata and I'll give you a link to that forum. Chances are those who are familiar with the underpinnings can help you solve this or find a workaround: XMP SDK
Another thought is third party IPTC editors Comparison of metadata editors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia if you can't resolve it using Adobe's software.

Copying IPTC caption information from one file to another

I need some help with jpeg files to run a script or Automator workflow to copy from one picture to another IPTC information (that's the text that makes up the caption, source, date location etc information in jpegs).
I have more than 300 high res pics that need to receive the IPTC (caption) info already typed into medium res versions of the same pics. The pics are all logically named and numbered (picSB_yyyy-mm-dd_med001 and picSB_yyyy-mm-dd_big001, 002 etc).
I already use Automator to bulk change some IPTC fields (location, copyright, credits etc) and have typed up details of who's in the pics etc in the caption field itself). But I can't see the work flow elements I'd need in the palettes on the left side of the Automator screen to copy the IPTC fields to other files.
I think there are two ways I could do this.
1) Set up an if/then script based on the file names and trailing numbers -
If file in folder named Medium ends in 001, copy IPTC info to file in folder named Big that ends in 001,
Repeat adding one to the value of the trailing number.
2) Move the files to new folders and have the IPTC info copied from one folder to another -
Move top file from folder Medium into a folder named Medium To Do,
Move the top file from folder Big to Big To Do,
Copy IPTC from file in Medium To Do to file in Big to Do,
Move file from Medium to Do to Medium Done,
Move file from Big To Do to Big done,
Repeat.
Can anyone advise me if I've missed the required elements in the Automator palette, or if such scripts might be available elsewhere?

Program translation - Copy field captions etc. from another language

Dear experts,
implementing translations for ABAP programs can be very annoying. Is it possible that screen field captions etc. are displayed in English, if no translation for the users logon language can be found. Or is it possible to copy all English texts to another language instead of copy everything text by text?

Abhishek Jolly gave you idea how to copy texts, so I will explain how to use English text for field labels even no translation exists for it.
For this you need to use input/output fields as labels:
- go to screen layout
- replace all the labels you have with input fields
- now for each such input field go to its attributes and choose option Output only . This way you input fields will behave like normal output fields but will look alike to Text field (label)
- go to program and create corresponding (same named) data objets for all fields
- then in some program point (i.e. in PBO) set your input fields like
inp_field = 'First field'(001).
- double click on 001 and text symbol will be created with same text ('First field')
- do the same for all the fields
- activate your texts and run program in different language. You will see same text as you set in EN.

Scripting iPhoto, Graphic Converter - copy photo Comment to IPTC caption

I want to select a bunch of photos in iPhoto and have the iPhoto comment for each file copied into its IPTC caption.
The script below works without throwing an error but the IPTC caption contains some trailing garbage in about 1 out of 3 photos. How to eliminate garbage?

I'm not good with scripting however to get the description applied to the IPTC description field, you can use iPhoto. All you have to do is use the Export option, select JPEG and then check the check box about including the title and description data. I've verified it is included with Exifer a freeware program for PC. Although the data is there, it is not read by Picasa on PC despite also reading and writing the caption to the IPTC description file. Do you think the extra garbage might also be being written by iPhoto and hence stopping Picasa from recognising the data? I'm using iPhoto 7.1.1 (354). Any help or suggestions to get descriptions written to IPTC would be great! Cheers.

Itunes match; a) if incorrect genre etc data has been uploaded to icloud, cannot delete it or replace the track/ data b) now have 9k tracks "stuck" in icloud and cannot delete them no matter what I do. eh?

I;m having so itunes match issues.
I ran itunes match. I';ve since foumd, I think:
a) if incorrect genre etc data has been uploaded to icloud, I cannot find how to delete it and reupload correct song and data. I am presently assuming that once songs are matched, the meta-data, genre, etc etc thats uploaded is now treated as 'the master' by itunes.
Question: if I want to change the genre on a track, whats the correct way to overwrite the data held in the icloud? if I delete the track i just bring down the old incorrect genres again!
b) I've deleted from the icloud all my music tracks (select all, delete, Y to delete tracks from icloud). I have turned off itunes match on my ipad, iphone, appletv mac and windows pc. I've deleted the itunes library files too from mac and pc in desperation. But hours /days later, when I turn on itunes match on mac or pc, it tells me i still have 9k tracks in icloud. All with the old, wrong meta-data ready to mess up my [now-corrected] files back on my pc!
I cannot delete them no matter what I do. The number of tracks in the cloud was 12k, now 9k so its reducing, by about 1500 tracks a day.
does it really take itunes servers that long to delete the tracks I've asked it to delete, or am i seeing garbage data?
is there a quicker way of deleting all my itunes match library, songs and data?

My original intention was to 'upgrade' some of my tracks. In those cases, I'd iTunes matched, and the process was completed.
I later downloaded those new tracks but found during that process, the tracks I was downloading had the old metadata.
I guess the idea there is to update the local genres, 'update iTunes match' and wait. How long, I don't know but that's the current solution,yes ?
Thing is I was trying to get my local library updated and, as I thought it, back in order, but was finding my local genre updates were being overwritten. I had a lot of tracks that kept on stating they could be downloaded so I thought the new files hadn't been copied down...
I think I was trying to get match to do too many things at once.
Deleting my tracks in the cloud? Was an act of desperation to start over with all known good genres locally and to re- upload, start over. I'd read in some forum or other to do that, I guess that was wrong,

A wait and see how long it takes to delete my tracks in the cloud ie let it complete the process I'd already started.
B Correct my local tracks genres
C Wait til those changes propagate up to the iCloud ( or whatever the right term is)
Q1: How long should I wait for A and C to complete?
Q2: Is it 100% definite that local genre changes will get copied up to the cloud, when I 'update iTunes match'?
I don't see any animated cloud icon, but I will watch for it!

In Pages, how do I edit the "My Card" data?

in Pages, how do I edit the "My Card" data?
I can't get a sender field to select my Email address or mobile phone.
I've searched the Help file for "My Card" and come up with nothing.
I've looked in My Contacts and edited the data where my name has a little blue bust (figuring MAYBE that's the My Card),
but everything looks correct in there, so the sender field isn't pulling data from here.
So WHERE DO SENDER FIELDS COME FROM?

First of all, THANKS for the quick reply. However it’s not working, either from the Link Inspector, or directly from the Menu. Here’s the steps to reproduce the problem:
I start with a new blank document, then pull down the Insert menu / Sender Field / Name / First Name, all it does is insert the word “First Name” into the document.
Pull down the Insert menu / Sender Field / Phone / Home Phone, all it does is insert the words “Home Phone”.
Same with all the other fields.
In other words, Sender Fields are not pulling data from the Contacts list.
I have done as you suggested, even closing both the Pages program AND Contacts, then starting Contacts first before starting Pages, in the hope that the link between the two will be established when starting Pages. Still no good.
I got it to work once last night (which was a good sanity-check for me to know I was doing it right) after editing my contact data inside the Contacts program, but I can’t get it to work today. I’ve tried rebooting, restarting Contacts, starting contacts BOTH before and after starting Pages. But it still won’t go.
It’s hard to believe this program is an Apple product, seeing how unreliable it is.
Any other suggestions?

What's the difference and purpose of Keywording and metadata such as title and caption, crator, sublocation , label etc? Where & how is the information used? Where does it appear?

Keywording is primarily for your own use for finding photos fast.
Title, Caption, etc are also for your own use but can be used by your clients or your stock company if you do not <Minimize Embedded Metadata> on export. Keywords are also included on export but are hardly of any use to others - unless you follow a standard for keywording.
You have the option of selecting title, caption, etc to appear in a Slide Show, on Print, or on a webpage created with LR.
If you go to the LR Help menu and type "title", or "caption" in the search box you will find plenty of advice for this.

Catalog missing captions and dates

I've been using various versions of the Organizer for about 7 years, but version 9 has my catalog all messed up. I recently installed elements 9, and when I moved in my catalog about 3000 of my 9000 or so photos are missing their dates and captions. Most of them are ones I scanned in years ago from older family members, not camera pictures. Did elements 9 somehow overwrite all my captions and dates? I've turned off auto analyzer but it was probaly running when I first put the catalog into the trial version of 9. I now have the purchased version running on windows 7 64 bit. I need to fix this somehow, since some of the elderly relatives who helped me date and caption the photos are no longer available to help me redo everything!
I have older catalog psa files saved 3 or 4 years ago but when I try to open these in 9 I get wrong file type messages
I've reinstalled 7, but still get the wrong file type message on my older .psa files
I've tried to open the psa files with Access, but that doesn't work, and so I tried Sqlite studio, but it doesn't recognize my .psa file as a valid database. Can I change an extension somehow to see these old catalogs as a db?
What does write keyword tag and properties info to file command do? Does it write all my captions and dates into a file attached to each photo so I'll never have this problem again?
Is there some sort of utility that would print out my catalog with captions and dates so I can have a hard copy to re enter dates from if this happens again?

Showing 196 apps in the catalog instead of the 600 plus. For example, Pandora was a pre configured app on phone. It is missing. When I search APP Catalog it doesn't show up, only 196.
Doing a partial erase to see if it works. Working with Palm support.

How to edit photostream captions on Windows?

Once photos are added to a shared iCloud Photostream album on a Windows machine, there does not appear to be any way to edit the captions/comments. Is this true? Any workarounds?

No iam not using stornext for the windows clients.
The mac and windows clients running on ethernet. The the mac clients have mapped the xsan volumes using AFP or SMB protocol and the edit in place works ok.
The windows clients have mapped the xsan volumes through SMB but the edit un place doesnt work, the files are cached and doesn´t run as edit in place.

Are you using StorNext FX to add the Windows clients to your Xsan? If so, then all you have to do is add the Windows Edit-in-place URI to each EIP device in the Devices section of the Java client Admin GUI (not the System Preferences pane). Once you've done that, EIP will work for the Windows clients as well. Here are the instructions for entering the correct URI syntax.
If you are not using StorNext FX for your Windows clients, please give us more detail on how your system is set up.

QuickPro (that I just bought!) won't let me edit - cut, copy etc!!! HELP

I just bought quicktime pro to be able to edit the movies from my digital photo camera. After registering for QuickTime Pro the program now lets me select other "Pro" options, but not edit, cut, copy etc... which were what I really needed from the program. I have read through the help sections, followed all the direction, and still nothing! These commands remain in gray and won't work when I use the shortcut keys.

The most likely reason is that you are attempting to edit/export muxed mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 files, which QT does not support: QT Mpeg Limitations
You can use this freeware to do limited editing (to cut out portions, for example) without requiring you to re-encode them. It works with mpeg-1 by itself but requires you to purchase the Apple mpeg2playbackcomponent to work with mpeg-2 files or vobs. It also will allow you to export these formats to other formats, such DV stream, for work in iMovie or to make DVDs with iDVD.

No IPTC caption on import!- How did you migrate xl-library to Aperture?

How can you possibly migrate a 100.000 plus image library into Aperture without having to completely redo the IPTC captions after import?
I find my images mainly by IPTC searches (so far iView pro) which to me represent years of captioning work.
Now that 1.5 has finally given us more control to reference our library I started to get excited again about Aperture, but IPTC only on export is not enough IMO.
How did you manage to ideal having DAM and Raw processor in one app?

structure of iView's "Category Sets" when you

Hi again. To explain better what I meant - I didn't use Annoture, I just used the function in iView itself whereby you can "synch" the metadata that you add in iView back to the file itself, so it is stored within the image file. Then when you import that image file into Aperture, the information is correctly read.
There is one problem - iView uses some fields that (I think) are not read by Aperture (Location, maybe ??) or that are not used correctly (iView stores "People" in the "Contact" field for example) However, there is also a script in iView that allows you to copy metadata items from place to place, so you could copy the iView Location field to Keywords, so that it is seen by Aperture when you import it.

I thought Photos was replacing both Aperture and iPhoto. There appears to be no way to edit IPTC metadata in Photos, which I could do using Aperture. I consider this to be a serious defect with Photos.

You can access Acrobat online services using this Link ( cloud.acrobat.com ) , although you might need to sign-in using your Adobe ID, before you can access those services.

Lately in Acrobat Pro Ver 9 for Win 7 the menu bar (File, Edit, View, Document etc) disappears when I move the window . . only happens when I have a pdf file open . . everything worked fine until a few days ago . . F9 fixes the problem until I move the window again . . I realize my version is old so I tried tried downloading XI reader and having the same issue . . any help would be appreciated

Check if you have multiple Java versions installed on your computer.
Try clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Also i would suggest uninstall security software and install it back.
Currently you may use F9 key to restore Menu bar.
