Editing JPEGS in ACR -- does it resave my JPEG?

Apologies if this has been answered, but wasn't sure how to search for this question --
Adobe Camera Raw offers the ability to apply edits to JPEG files in the ACR plugin. If you make any tweaks to the JPEG, the "sidecar" information seems to be saved back into the file, similar to a .DNG file. These tweaks can be reversed or removed, just like working on a RAW file.
My question is -- when ACR saves out the JPEG with the adjustment info., is this "damaging" the JPEG? My understanding is every time you save a JPEG, you introduce compression artifacts, even in the slightest. Is this not the case with the ACR process with JPEGS? I know ACR is only saving adjustment information to the JPEG, so do the perils of saving a JPEG again not apply? Normally, I wouldn't care about these slight artifacts, but I am making the ACR adjustments on my original camera JPEGS and want to make sure I can always go back the original pure camera JPEG just by shutting off the adjustments I made.
PS - Normally, I shoot RAW but shoot the occasional JPEG and like the tweaking ability of ACR.

>There was actually quite a discussion about this just recently. Some will disagree, but Thomas Knoll, author of ACR, says that the changes are saved without making any modifications to the image data.
Here is a link to that to
That Topic
Whether working on raw files or JPEGS, ACR does not alter the data in the file but merely stores the edits to the file as metadata. For raw files the metadata are stored in an .XMP side car file, while for DNGs and JPEGs the metadata are stored in the file itself. Thus you can edit the JPEG file as many times as you want without any degradation of the image.
However, to implement these edits you must use ACR to bring the edited file into Photoshop and when you save the image as a JPEG some data will be lost in both the editing process and by JPEG compression.

  • Cannot open JPEGs in ACR via Bridge

The strangest thing has happened recently. Where I used to be able to open a JPEG file in Camera Raw 6.3 when viewing in Bridge (CS5) it now defaults to opening them only in Photoshop (CS5). My preferred processing workflow is: Adobe Bridge > Camera Raw > Photoshop. But now the middle step processing in ACR is no longer happening automatically (I can do it manually but that's a hassle). I triple checked all my preferences and they are still set up to open JPEGs in ACR as the default. I use a Nikon D700 & D7000 and the NEF (RAW) files open fine in ACR, but not the JPEGs. I am using the Mac versions.
Has something changed with how Adobe is supporting JPEGs in ACR or am I missing something.

This is a workaround rather than a cure............................. for cs5 users............
If you are unable to open .jpg files in adobe Camera RAW from Bridge and the Preferences have been set correctly in Photoshop Preferences, and all avenues have been exhausted or you are getting the error message in Bridge when you right click, or  ctrl + r, or go to the ‘Open in Camera RAW’ button at the top of Bridge  and also Getting the error message :
‘Camera Raw Editing Is not Enabled, Camera Raw Editing Requires that a Qualifying Product has been Launched at least once to Enable this Feature’
And Bridge does open up RAW files OK
    Try this
    1.        In bridge, hit the ctrl + Alt key together and double click the .JPG image, this should open in Camera RAW (but only the one image clicked, not multiple files.
    or
    2.    Open Photoshop
    Go to File.....
    Browse in MIniBridge.........
    Browse for folder containing images..............
Find image, right click and open in camera RAW
(if you wish to open multiple files,  when a number of images have been selected,  the Camera Raw menu disappears when you right click), however, hold down the Alt + Crtl key together (Windows) and double click any of the highlighted images, they will all open in Camera RAW as they should do.

iBookstore Publisher Support send me a fast response email which included some helpful info:
Please make sure that all image files inside the ePub end with one of the following: ".tif", ".jpg", or ".png" and that the file itself matches the file extension type. To check if the image file matches the file extension type, please right click on the image then select "Get Info". Once the info tab appears, please make sure that the file extension type of the image file matches the "Kind" found under "General".
For further information regarding embedded images, please refer to the iBookstore Asset Guide, which is available for download in the Deliver Your Content module in iTunes Connect.
And they INCLUDED THE TRANSPORTER LOG (!), the log generated by iTunes Producer as it tries to upload a book. We were able to search for the Validation Error # within the log and find out which image Producer was trying to upload when it encountered an error. Turns out the problem was a corrupted screenshot jpeg.

  • How can i save the acr changes i make to jpegs (not as sidecar xmps)?

    Hi Guys!
I have been a full-time pro photog for 16 years and yes, yes, I always shoot in raw.  Except on my cameraphone.    I am on a pc.  We have hundreds of pics that my family took on cameraphones on a recent cruise (when we didn't feel like lugging the pro gear around all day).  Some need some adjustments before printing.  My 16 year old is comfortable with the basics in ACR and went in there herself and started making her adjustments.  For MY wedding pics (CR2s), I have the xmps saved as sidecars and would like to keep it that way.  I am suspecting that her adjustments aren't being saved becuase of this?  If this is the case, I would be happy to change that setting (after 45 min I still can't figure out how!! i must have come across it but just am not seeing it!) temporarily for her for a day or two and then permenantly switch it back for my own editing purposes.  If that is not the case, please, please, please give any pointers!!
The adjustments show up in bridge after she makes them in ACR, but don't show up (dark pic still dark) when I open the pic anywhere outside of Bridge (such as when we email it to another computer to check it or in windows).  If we try to open in plain old CS5, ACR opens the file no matter what, which makes sense since the new info apparently isn't embedded into the file.
Yes, I can teach her how to do her adjustments in CS5 (rather than cs% Bridge and ACR) but she has a huge scrapbooking day planned with Grandma on Wednesday and living in FL, we are in the thick of our wedding season right now, so I don't have time to teach her.  If there is ANY way to get the ACR adjustments saved to the files?  Thank you soooooo much for any help!
    Cher

Settings you make in ACR for a Raw file are written to the separate XMP side car file. (The Camera Raw preferences has this set by default and to my opinion it should stay so, but the other option is to save them in a central database)
However, opening the same file in ACR and make new adjustments the previous settings are overwritten by the new ones. You can save them separately but that would be a hell of a job. If you want to be on the safe side you should make a proper back up of the whole folder (be sure to have the XMP files included, by default those are hidden files in Bridge) before someone else starts playing with the settings. However, you can always go back to the default version using the option in the little menu icon next to the name op f the panel (first panel is Basic). click on the icon and from the provided menu choose 'Reset Camera Raw Defaults' to go back to the originals.
I don't use jpeg in ACR very often but I believe ACR settings for jpeg and tiff are written in the XMP data in the file itself instead of a separate XMP file. You can revert to default or make new settings that also overwrite the older settings.
Making adjustments in ACR shows the results in Bridge (it uses the XMP data for the preview) but to make it visible in other apps you also have to save them in Photoshop itself to make the changes persistent so that mail and print reflect your settings.
So basically, let her play with the files and either chose the option to save the files (bottom left in ACR Window and choose the wanted provided options or open and save them in Photoshop to get the proper result. And if you want to be on the safe side let here use her own copies and keep the originals to your self.

  • Lightroom not showing edits made in ACR

I edited photos in Adobe Camera Raw from Bridge, but when I look at the same files in Lightroom, they do not appear to include the edits.  I did verify that xmp files were created when I edited the files in ACR.  Why is Lightroom not reading the xmp file and showing the edits?

I appreciate the detailed response.  I have been told by a photography instructor that it makes sense to use both Lightroom and Photoshop together and that Lightroom is for end-to-end workflow (which Photoshop is not capable of).  I was not aware that Lightroom is only designed for front-end workflow.  Is there any formal documentation on this that I can read to understand the purpose of Lightroom?
The Adobe website has some good introductory videos. I think this is a great place to start:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/george-jardine-on-lightroom/the-lightroom-catalog/
but the other videos can be found behind the Products and Channels links toward the top of that video's webpage.
The recommendation to use Lightroom with Photoshop, rather than LR on its own, is somewhat akin to recommending Bridge + ACR + PS, except it makes less sense to even think of using Bridge+ ACR on thier own without Photoshop. You can do a lot with LR on its own but not quite everything. On the other hand, those specific tasks which you cannot do in LR may be done using some other editing software than PS, including many cheap and even free alternatives, or using older versions of PS even if they are not ACR-compatible with your camera.
When you use Bridge, the Raw conversion and similar types of parametric editing are assigned to ACR and the rest is passed to Photoshop. Bridge cannot directly print or export without calling on another program or utility to do that. It can only view preview thumbnails and manage metadata and issue instructions to other software. ACR cannot paint, warp, use layers, etc - because it belongs to the same basic class of software, as Lightroom's Develop module capabilities.. in fact there is a very close functional correspondence between these two, and deliberately so; so that the image adjustment parameters involved can be inter-compatible.
When you use Lightroom, the Raw conversion and parametric editing can be very efficiently taken care of internally by LR so ACR does not need to be involved. This works especially well for dynamically applying edits across batches of images on the fly, previewing the effect of processing presets (recipes), making use of a full history of the changes applied to each image, and so on, You can print or export directly without leaving the parametric realm, a little as if you were able to do so from inside ACR.
But when an image editing task is required that is not of this parametric kind (such as compositing, detailed retouching other than a little dustspotting, etc) then just as Bridge can pass an image into PS that will be saved as a new file version, Lightroom can also do the same using its own workflow that does not involve Bridge.
The method is very simple: a new LR image version is created based on a brand new working file saved to disk. Ctrl+E or right-click and select "Edit in... Photoshop". and your image as it currently appears in LR, is automatically opened inside PS. Save when you are finished, and the PS-edited changes appear inside LR transparently. Then you carry on working with that, in the same way as for any other image inside LR,

  • How to stop JPEG starting ACR 4.1

I have reviewed Jeff Schewes article on ACR 4.1 and the CS3 Help. I have been unable to stop JPEG files from scheduling ACR.
I have checked and unchecked the Always open JPEG files with settings using Camera RAW in the Camera Raw Preferences.
How do you keep JPEG images (and for that matter TIFF files) from scheduling ACR from Bridge.
I am running CS3 on a Windows XP Professional.

Thanks to Jeff, Charlie and Thomas. All have added something to the Scheduling of JPEG and TIFF into Camera Raw.
I believe that I have all the information required at this time for my workflow. All of the following is for my clarification.
If I am in Bridge and double click a JPEG or TIFF and hold down the shift key, Camera Raw will not be scheduled
If I am in Bridge and double click a JPEG or TIFF image, the image will always schedule Camera Raw if the Bridge menu item Edit/Preference/Thumbnails has Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF checked (Bridge JPEG and TIFF Checked).
If I am in Bridge and double click a JPEG or TIFF image and Bridge JPEG and TIFF is unchecked and the JPEG or TIFF image has previously been processed by Camera Raw, Camera Raw will be scheduled if Camera Raw Preferences dialog has Always open JPEG files with settings using Camera Raw or Always open TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw checked.
If I am in Bridge and double click a TIFF image and the TIFF file has layers, the TIFF file will not schedule Camera Raw.
In Photoshop Preferences (Edit/Preference/File Handling) there is a check box titled Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files. I checked the check box and opened a JPEG image in Photoshop Camera Raw was scheduled. I clicked Open Image in ACR and then saved the image in Photoshop (JPEG saved in Photoshop after passing thru ACR). I then Unchecked the check box and opened the JPEG file Camera Raw was not scheduled.
The only action I see for the Photoshop File Handling check box is to either schedule or not to schedule JPEG images. I do not see any related action for TIFF files in Photoshop. My expectation is that TIFF files will open in Photoshop not ACR.
Note if a dialog box is open in Photoshop and Camera Raw is scheduled and the Open Image button is press, nothing happens Photoshop is not scheduled and no action message issued. Once the dialog box is cleared the image appears in Photoshop.
Hope I have correctly consolidated the previous comments.
    Thanks again

  • Opening JPEGs in ACR from the Organizer

Many Photoshop Elements users like to edit JPEGs and other non-raw file formats with the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in to Photoshop Elements. But if you rely on the Organizer for managing your files, opening a JPEG in ACR is clumsy – in the Editor, you must do File > Open As > Camera Raw and then navigate to the folder containing the file.
I've written a script, EditInACR, with which you can open JPEGs and other non-raw files directly in ACR from the Organizer.  You configure the Organizer to use EditInACR as an external editor, and then you use the Organizer’s Edit > Edit With command to open selected files. You can download the script at:
    http://johnrellis.com/editinacr/

I've put out a new version of EditInACR that should work with PSE 6, 7, and 8, on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, both 32- and 64-bit.  (The previous version didn't work on 64-bit or with PSE 8.)

Does this save a .jpeg somewhere?

The edits you do in LR are non destructive, and are saved automatically to the catalog, so there's no need for a Save button.
If you need a jpg for a particular purpose, select the image in the Library, and click Export.
The export dialog lets you fill in size, resolution, color space, sharpening, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had done screen shots on the iPad and then emailed them to my Mac. I then worked to cut the black bar off the top, but some how Photoshop wasn't saving them correctly. I couldn't even reopen them in PS. So, I downloaded them again, went back in, saved them as .jpegs and then reuploaded.  That solved it.  It was quite bizarre.
Now trying to get the description listing right in the iBookstore.
I wrote the piece out, I thought in TextEdit.  Then pasted it into the box in iTunesProducer. When I was getting the error message above, it also was saying that there's a 4,000-character limit. So, I copied it into Pages and did a character count and saw 3,887.  I still had to cut about 500 chactacters out.  Support responded and said I was still very close to the limit, so I don't know what it was they were counting. My Pages counter said it was close to 3,300....
My problem now is that they have bullet points on lines with no text now.  They've fixed it from how it was first diplaying.  So, I'm trying to get that cleaned up.  It's their fault, but it looks like me, the publisher, is the one who is clueless......

  • After editing file in ACR 8.6 (Mac) , the file (NEF and XMP) modification dates are not updated

With both my Mac's, reset Photoshop C  (2014) to previous version 2014.0. Now find that after editing file in ACR 8.6 (Mac) , the file (NEF and XMP) modification dates are not updated. Reloaded camera raw, etc., but still find modification dates are not updated, either using Finder or using Bridge to view dates. Editing other files, PSD, DNG, TIFF, etc., are updated and the information is correctly displayed.

Ok, not entirely sure what I did but it's now working (Bizarre!). The only thing I did was 'eject' the ACR 8.6 .dmg file from the finder side bar and restart PS CC, so that may have been where I was going wrong all along!
However, I now have another issue in that there is no preview of the shot in Finder on my iMac when I highlight the NEF file. I assume this is simply because Apple haven't yet released an update for the new D810 NEF files and so the computer doesn't know what it's looking at?!?
If anyone has any other ideas though, then I'm more than willing to listen.
    Thanks again.

  • RAW DNG sequence / Edit Original with ACR within Premier

I need to speak to a Adobe Premier expert. I have a RAW DNG sequence shot on my Canon 5d Mark 3 via Magic Lantern imported into my premier project now. I want to edit the DNG's image settings with ACR (adobe camera raw). So i right click on my DNG sequence / clip and go to Edit - Original . ACR pops up and i make my image modifications. I click ok but the DNG sequence doesnt change, its stays the same.
Now i can do all this without trouble within After Effects, but it just adds another step to my workflow. When it should be working within Premier. Im still waiting to see if ACR will ever work directly within Premier.

Maybe whoever answers your question can give me some insight. I imported my DNG sequences to After Effects, because Premier wouldn't import the DNG sequences,  and created a new comp for each of the shots I have. Later in Premier I imported all those AE comps. Now where would be the correct place to color correct and grade this? Straight in Premier? Or will I be loosing the flexibility of the DNGs? Should I do it instead in the AE comps? Or maybe it doesn't matter? Thanks for the help!

  • Edits done in ACR don't show in LR 2

I like to use both LR2 and Bridge 2 (PS CS3/Bridge) and all edit that I make in straight ACR 4.5 do not show in LR2 but the ones I make in LR2 do show in Bridge and when I open that image in ACR.
What setting do I need to change in either ACR or LR2 to make the edits done in ACR show up in LR2.

In ACR you have an option to save the adjustments to sidecar files (default) or a centralized database. At least it used to be so. Make sure the adjustments are saved to sidecar files.
Also, in LR you have to read metadata from files - the adjustments won't load automatically from those .xmp sidecar files.
