Editing keywords outside Aperture, safe or not?

Wanting to maker the most of keywords, and aware that they can be made almost infinitely hierarchical, I see from page 268 of the User Manual that it is in theory possible to Export the keywords from the Keyword HUD into, say, BBEdit. Then to edit them into the groups one wants, respecting the TAB conventions and re-import them once they're just as you want.
Has anyone done this? Is it really as easy as it seems? It sure would be easier than scrolling up and down inside the HUD.
But is the file which the HUD works on a simple tsv file - and not XML?
IOW, are there pitfalls, or is it what many keyword 'fanatics' do?
TIA!

Pretty sure it ignores it.
So say I have this in Aperture now (hierarchy)
a->b->c
And now I edit and import this:
a->b->c->d
The results in Aperture should reflect that, and you'll only have d added to the hierarchy.
I tinkered with this a fair bit a few months ago and was relatively comfortable that it "did the right thing."
Note, this is very easy to experiment with. Keywords follow an Aperture library. So, to eliminate any risk, create a new Aperture library, create a small keyword hierarchy, export it, edit the text file, putting new keywords all over the place, and import it and ensure all is good. I did this and was happy, but I'd say if you checked my work you'd probably be more comfortable. You know, "trust, but verify" and all that

  • Aperture 3 will not let me delete duplicate keywords

    KEYWORD Craziness.
I have gone through my keyword list, and it is extensive, and edited duplicates out... to find them re-populated when I come back to Aperture. I have chosen to use all lower case font in my keywords so now it is obvious to pick out the duplicate. For example, the keyword "BUILDING" comes back which of course is right under "building". I have stopped applying keywords on import to avoid any possibility of duplicates and use presets to apply keywords...less typing more accuracy. Why is Aperture adding back keywords that I have edited many times. I use families to organize the keywords. The duplicate keywords do not have any pictures associated with them... strange that they keep coming back!
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks in advance

    Kirby,
    Thanks for your input.
Three more things to look into- my situation
-I do sync a few pictures on Mobileme.
-I do have extensive Keyword Preset Groups of which I have deleted and rebuilt in the past couple of days precisely for the reason your noting. They were old information and they did not sync with the master list.
-I am using more than one library, but I am in the process of consolidating. I only use business photos on this computer (MacBook Pro) and relegate all personal photos to the iMac. Keywords are specific to work on the MacBook Pro.
Multiple libraries - Switch to Library - vs - Restarting Aperture 3
My first question would be... is the keyword list universal to all libraries? The answer...no.
I just switched between libraries and each library has it's own keyword list. I tried to import my edited keyword list from my main library to another library... it did not import the corrected version. I quit Aperture 3 and restarted to engage the changes (I'm guessing that is what one needs to do) I made in the main library Keyword List... and it worked. I switched to another library imported my edited Keyword List from the main library and now everything is in sink throughout my libraries. I have the same keyword list. I am editing all libraries into my main library applying keywords as I go, so I was not worried about loosing any keywords that were applied in those libraries.
Thanks for you insight Kirby. Any other tips? I'd gladly take them.

  • Aperture plugin does not create keywords correctly on previews

Keywording migration is different between previews and raw files.
"Non-face" keywording works as expected for raw files, but not for Aperture preview JPEGs. The preview JPEG seems to suffer with keywords.
The child, parent, and child/parent combo all seem to appear as keywords in the preview JPEG, whereas only the child keywords appear in the master (correct behavior).
This only seems to occur in JPEG previews of other Aperture modified JPEGs, not in original JPEGs or JPEG previews from raw files.
Face keywords show up correctly on JPEGs, but not on RAW files?  Could this be a link?  Seem to have different logic for raw vs preview, but neither work together on either raw or preview.
Raw: non-face keywords okay, only one face keyword per photo
JPEG previews: non-face keywords are a mess, all face keywords included

I am trying to import some existing JPEGs on my Desktop.
Do you mean your Desktop folder? And is the Desktop folder the only folder that is showing this behaviour?  I have never had problems to open images directly from the Desktop. Have the image files been dropped directly onto the the Desktop or into a subfolder of the Desktop?
Previous MacOS X versions had problems with a huge number of files on the Desktop because this folder has been treated in a special way.
Which version of Aperture and MacOS X are you using?
It might be a problem with permissions or file ownership.
If the problem with your Desktop folder persists you could try to reset the permissions, ownership, and access control lists on your Home folder as described in Linc Davis's post here:  Re: iPhoto returns OSStatus error -54
Have you by any chance encrypted your Home folder by File Vault?

  • How to export ranking and keywords from Aperture to iPhoto

    Hi,
I like to edit RAWs in Aperture but still want to keep iPhoto for JPGs, sharing and slidshows... However, I cannot get the keywords and rankings from Aperture into iPhoto. The JPGs have other Metadata attached to them, but not the ones that matter the most here - ranking and keywords. Subtitles for example are also missing in the exported picture.
I tried various ways of exporting/importing the pictures (of course "including metadata"), but did not yet succeed. I did expect these two applications to get along more smoothly, however there must be a way to do this, right? Please let me know!

    Redgo,
I can't answer your specific question, but I too like to use iPhoto for slideshows.
I don't do this by sharing the libraries or having duplicate copies. In Aperture, I make an album with the pictures for my slideshow. Then in iPhoto, I grab that album from Aperture and make an iPhoto slideshow from that. It uses the previews, but medium-res previews are fine for a slideshow. It wouldn't be so good for printing (but I imagine you'd use Aperture to do that).
Just my 2 cents about an alternate workflow.

  • I am unable to change location for editing photos.  I tried the advanced drop down menu in iPhoto and have 2 locations for editing-iphoto and aperture.  I want to add photoshop.  Can anyone help? Thanks.

i cannot change editing location from aperture to photoshop in iphoto.  i followed directions to advanced tab in iphoto and have 2 choices for editing photos-iphoto and aperture.  any suggestions on how to change the sites?  thanks.

Not sure why you would have Aperture there as it's not an editor.
To change, just select Aperture again, and this will give you the dialogue to change the choice.

  • Aperture export is not working, "Choose" buttons also  not reacting

Suddenly I can't export versions, originals, metadata and export as library anymore. Also all "Choose" buttons do not react anymore. For example its not possible to open another Library or choose the external photo editor in Preferences. If I login with my second useraccount Aperture does work just fine.
On Monday I had no problems at all. Sofar I did the following things:
    FIRST.
Repair Diskpermissions and Verify disk which was OK.
    Moved to desktop following files:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Apertue
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Aperture
Emptied the trash and restarted. The problem is not solved.
    SECOND.
All the above actions and restart.
Aperture Photolibrary first aid, "Repair Permissins" , "Repair Database" and "Rebuild Database".
    The problem is not solved.
    THIRD.
Uninstalled Aperture and removed all files containing the frase "Aperture" (as far as these files had any connection with the application).
Repair Diskpermissions and Verify disk which was OK.
    Emptied the trash and restarted.
Installed Aperture from DVD and update via Apstore.
Still the same problems so I am asking the form members for help.

Are you having any troubles wiht other applications run from  this account?
From what you wrote you seemed to have covered all the bases not sure what else to suggest. What is the system?
Do you have any plugins installed in Aperture ?  What about any applications, plugins etc, for this account?
You can try doing a safe boot (hold the shift key down as soon as you hear the start up chime. Hod it until the Apple appears on the screen) Safe boot takes longer to come up, there will be a status bar at the bottom of the screen while it boots. Once it is up you will see Safe Boot in red letters at the top of the screen on the login page. This might not work if you have File Vault turned on.
Once booted in Safe mode log in. Aperture use to not run in Safe mode because the graphics card is restricted but I believe in 3.5. it will run. Note everything will be slow and jerky.
See if that makes a difference. Once done testing boot normally and try it again.

While editing photos in Aperture, I trying to make an "auto" adjustment to the exposure,
but the "auto" button is grayed out and will not allow any auto function to take place.
    Please help!
    Thank you,
    Mike

Mike, are you working with raw images?
For some raw images auto exposure is not available, have a look at this manual page:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=18%26se ction=9%26tasks=true
Note: Automatic exposure adjustment is available for Aperture-supported RAW images only. If you want to adjust the exposure of another file type, such as JPEG or TIFF, see Working with the Exposure Controls. For a list of supported RAW file types, go to the Apple website at http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs.

  • My Aperture Library does not want to open.

    Hi Guys,
I am trying to Reference my Aperture Library, so that I keep all my RAW (original) files on my external hard drive, and only work on the Version files in Aperture.  I am having a BIG problem with it.  My Aperture library does not want to open now at all....
Can someoen please guide me through this, step by step??

    Hi Frank,
Well, I just switched back to how it was now, so everything works as normal.
I can tell what I want to do, though.
I am currently working on the Aperture Library IN APERTURE, so when I import HUGE RAW files (1000x at a time), it will tell me very quickly that there is not enough space.  So what I would like to do is:
I would like my library to look like this:
I want to import EVERYTHING and KEEP THEM THERE for ever.....
Because at the moment, I work on my RAW files, I export them as:
    -RAW
    -With watermark
    -Without watermark
    onto my HardDive in folders.
Then I delete them off my library IN Aperture, because I need to, there is not enough space.
So when someone contacts me and they want 10 images of eg.Street food of Phuket, that are HIGH resulotion, or made b/w or whatever, then I have to re-import a RAW to re-edit it to what the client wants.
Do you understand were I am going with this??
So now, I woud like to know, HOW to put my Aperture Library on my harddrive, and keep all files IN APERTURE so I can work on them whenever I need to, and of course export them as I want, but still keep them in Aperture.
But I am having problems with this whole referenced thing and in moving my library to my HD.  I have tried dragging my Aperture Library (in Pictures) to my HD, it copies, and then when I hold down the OPTION key and open Aperture, I go to Other Library:
and choose my Aperture Library on my HD which I have copied from PICTURES:
    Then I get this.....
And this is where I STOPPED..........
I really appreciate you helping me Frank, thank you so much!!!!!!

  • Problem synching edited pix in aperture album to ipad events

Deleted specific events for Ipad 3 in order to delete the pix.  Proceeded to then edit the photo on IMac in Aperture.  When attempt to synch the newly edited album in Aperture with the IPad3, the old contents of the deleted album come over.  Even on Itunes the synch window shows the old # of pix in the album to synch.  However, if go into Aperture the edited album is proper.  In some mysterious way, itunes is locating the album from a time before it was edited and synching it with the IPad.  This is occurring despite my looking at everything being correct when open the album directly in Aperture.
? is where is Aperture hiding the old pix and why is the old album being selected on Itunes despite it not existing as such in Aperture?

FIgured out (I believe) by deleting the iPhoto library cache

  • My aperture library will not open after restoring my whole computer after a kernal panic.  I can not get the Aperture troubleshooting menu to open...any help?

My aperture library will not open after restoring my whole computer after a kernal panic.  I can not get the Aperture troubleshooting menu to open...any help?

    Leonie,
Fisrt let me thank you for your reply and assistance!  So here is the problem with so more detail...I was not sure I was going to get any replies ; )
I restored from a time machine back up.
    History of Failure:
I was trying to launch Aperture when the kernal panic occured.  My computer had been closed, and asleep and the battery was dead.  I plugged in charger and it was restoring/waking up after being asleep/shutting down from dead battery.  I launched Aperture from the dock and as soon as it opened the kernal panic occured.  After that the computer would not turn on.  It would try to boot then it would shut off.  I even tried to safe boot to no avail.  I went to the Apple store and they told me that the only thing I could do was restore whole computer from back up.  So thats what I did.
Since then my previous aperture library: "2011" will not open.  I have created a new aperture library "2012", and it runs fine.  I have added new photos for about the past month...no problems.
When I launch aperture with 2012 library then try to switch libraries, I get the following prompt: "The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch."  I choose "Relaunch" and I get the following warning prompt: "There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library 20111.aplibrary”."  The only option is "Quit"
    Both libraries are version 3.2.3
    Computer stats: 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM, OS X 10.6.8
I have tried to launch aperture troubleshooting by holding option+command from both the aperture icon and from the library file, neither will launch the troubleshooting feature.
I am ok with computers, but not a whiz (mechanical engineer)...to me it seems as though there is a corrupt path or file or some sort of "check" that is failing, becuase the failure occurs so fast after trying to launch aperture. Maybe that doesn't make any sense but just a thought.
I hope that you may be able to provide some insight.  Thank you again for you time and I hope that you have a nice day!
    Mike

iam looking for a image convertor for raw (raf) files so i can edit them in aperture can any one help please

Ah, gotchya. Your Fuji camera must not then be on this list here?  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html  You could presumably use the sw that came with the camera and create jpegs or tiffs with them and keep them in aperture along side the unsupported raws, in stacks.

  • After editing images in Aperture, I want to overwrite the editing to an external drive.  Is thee an easy way to "add" the new work without the  long process of backing up the whole library.

After editing images in Aperture, I want to overwrite the new editing to a backup external drive.  Is there an easy way to "add" the new work without the  long process of backing up the whole library.

But the Library is not a program.  I use SuperDuper, and it is smart enough to treat Finder Packages (such as the Library) as a whole bunch of files and folders, and overwrites only those that have changed.  Can't CCC be set up the same way?

  • Why Aperture 3 is not detecting  all Exposure Program use by my Nikon D5200

Hi there ! I just wanted to know why Aperture 3 is not detecting  Exposure Program use by my Nikon D5200 camera in my metadata photos ?   It only detects Aperture Mode and Shutther Mode. I should say that using Adobe's Light Room detects all Esposure Programs / Scenery / Effects so the metadadata is there.
    Thanks in advance,

Whereas both the thread t1 and t2 shares same object called 't'.So? There is nothing in test that is shared between the two except the method, and that is synchronized, which prevents t1 and t2 from executing it at the same time. What you can't know is whether t1 or t2 will execute first (although t1 probably will more often, simply because it was started first and will hit method() very quickly).
But if I use the same program by implementing runnable interface instead of extending Thread class, its working fine(ie both thread are synchronized)As isocdev said, I suggest you post the version that uses Runnable as well (and please use code tags as he suggested; for what you've already posted I suggest you just edit the post).

  • Searching for parent keywords only, Aperture 3

    Hello everyone,
I want to search for images that have top-level keywords only, but not the child keywords. For example, if I have a 'birds' keyword with child keywords in it...
    Birds
    -Bald Eagle
    -Heron
    --Green Heron
    --Blue Heron
    -Pheasant
...if I keyword search for 'Birds', it brings up everything else in that birds category.
Normally this would be fine, but sometimes I don't know the name of birds in my photos, so I just assign them the generic keyword 'birds'. Occasionally, I would like to be able to go back to my 'birds' keyword, and find only those images that haven't been tagged with a deeper-level keyword.
Is this possible to do? I can't seem to find a way to do it. I appreciate any help.
    -Jeff

I'm pretty sure Apple has actually improved the handling of parent keywords and the keyword hierarchy since 3.0 came out. It used to not really work at all.
Now it works as described in this thread. (Search on the parent keyword, and Aperture will find all images tagged with any of the children keywords.) This is, imho, very useful, and requires (I think) only one small user restriction to give Aperture the behavior most seem to expect from a nested (i.e.: hierarchical) keyword structure.
The "user restriction" is to give a special marker to parent keywords (to identify them as containers of keywords, separate from keywords), and to use these container keywords only as containers (that is, do not apply them to images).
I prefix all top-level containers with "aa.". This is arbitrary, but it has some reasons to recommend it:
. it forces the containers to the top of the keyword hierarchy
. it stands out without making the name harder to read at a glance
. the period allows one to double-click either the prefix or the suffix to select it in isolation
. it allows straightforward modification for hierarchy depth (see below).
In practice (using the example in this thread), the keyword hierarchy might be (as a starting point):
    aa.Animals {top-level category}
    bb.Birds {second-level category}
    cc.Hawks {third-level category}
    HawkUnspecified {child in third-level category}
    HawkRedShouldered {child in third-level category}
    HawkSharpshinned {child in third-level category}
    {Etc.}
This immediately (afaict) solves several related usage problems. All hawk images show up when images are filtered for "Animals" or "Birds". One can easily search for "all hawks" or a specific hawk. One can easily tag hawks to be specified later, and easily recall those images. All the "Hawk" tags are gathered together alphabetically (as well as hierarchically) -- makes creating filters much easier. The Keyword HUD is much more useful as a reporting tool. (There is an added complexity: the keyword "HawkUnspecified" must be manually removed after the hawk is specified (a good use of a complex Smart Album).)
Additionally, this system allows for (IME) much easier maintenance of the Keyword list (renaming and moving).
#1 Keyword hint: use "{Option}+click" in the Filter HUD Keyword Rule to limit the selection to the clicked Keyword. Any time you filter on Keyword and don't get the result you expect, this is the first thing to check.
For me, Keyword use in Aperture is still very much a work in progress. Suggestions and comments are welcome.

  • Choosing programs for editing clips outside Premiere?

If I am working in Premiere, and I right-click on a jpeg image and choose "edit original," the image opens in Microsoft Paint. I want it to open in Photoshop. Double clicking on a jpeg in Windows Explorer opens the image in Photoshop, so it's not a Windows issue. How do I tell Premiere which program I want to use to edit clips outside of Premiere?
    J. D.

You know, when I right click and choose "edit original" Premiere will shut down on me everytime no matter what kind of image it is. I have all images associated with Ulead PhotoImpact. Anyhow, it's just as easy to open the folder with the image and open it from there.
One thing I must tell you that someone else here taught me is that Premiere doesn't work with jpg's very well. For instance if you try to do any of the transform functions like zooming in or moving around on the image using "image pan", no matter how big your jpg is or how many dots per inch, it will always end up a bit blurry. In fact, it will be a tad blurry even if you don't run any effects on it. Premiere seems to work best with tiff file, so I always convert to that first.
