Editing LR images in PS:

I am a very happy CC subscriber and a reasonably proficient LR user on a Win 7-64 PC.  When sending RAW images to PS for additional editing, I am unable to see the results of the PS edits in LR library.  I've looked into preferences for both LR and PS and see nothing that seems pertinent.  I've googled on the issue and reviewed hours of vids - nothing useful yet, aside from a small crush on Kost.
Any ideas on my LR issues?
Bob

As to your first post. You won't see any PS edits on the RAW file. Only when you SAVE the file you have sent to PS will those edits you have done oin PS show up and they will be in the SAVED file that is stacked with the original raw file.
PS does not edit raw files. LR and ACR, along with many other raw file editors, edit raw files. Even though you can apply many edits in PS with the name of the file in the PS header area, FileName: X123456.NEF/CR2/RAF/whatever raw file extension, those edits are stored in RAM, and or the PS Scratch Disk, and only get applied and or included to the image once it is SAVED as a PSD, TIF, JPG or some other image file type. It is then Added to the LR catalog and stacked with the original raw file.

  • Lightroom 5.4 jumps to second monitor when attempting to edit an image in Photoshop CS 6.

    Hello,
I have a brand-new HP z620 with an Nvidia Quadro K 4000 display adapter and apparently a software and/or hardware conflict.
I am experiencing an issue with Lightroom 5.4 window not working correctly with my second, not primary, monitor. When Lightroom is working on the second monitor and I need to edit an image in Photoshop cs6, I want Lightroom stay where it is and Photoshop to open on my primary monitor. And this has worked well for me on my previous system which was also a Windows 7 64-bit machine with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 570.
When I click the Lightroom option to "edit in Photoshop CS 6” The Lightroom window will move itself to the primary monitor for no apparent reason. This is the problem I am seeking to remedy.
No other external editing programs opened through LR behaves this way, such as NIK or OnOne Perfect Photo Suite, and I really need LR to stay on the second monitor on the extended desktop.
I’ve tried every monitor cabling setup I could think of to try and even unplugging the primary to make windows identify it as the 2 monitor in the screen resolution settings, but that does nothing for me. My new workstation is running the same OS version and a K4000. Monitors are currently connected to the display ports via dp to dvi adapters. I’ve already tried moving the connections around and plugging one into dvi, there doesn’t seem to be a setting I can change within windows or adobe to change this behavior.”
On a related note, I have similar instability in software made by X-rite that supports the use of a colorimeter allowing me to build profiles for monitors and evaluate colors precisely. During the profiling process I place the colorimeter in the designated place on the secondary monitor and direct the application to begin showing the colorimeter different colors on that monitor. At this point the colors jump to the primary monitor while the rest of the interface along with the colorimeter is a secondary monitor. I have a workaround that I'm using for this particular problem but I am fairly sure that the issue that causes the problem with Lightroom is also the source of my trouble here and I need to eliminate it.
    thanks for your time,

  • I am unable to edit an image in Photoshop.

I just installed Lightroom 5.3, and I have Photoshop CS5.1 installed. The problem is that I am unable to edit an image in Photoshop. When I click Photo>Edit In, the option for Photoshop is not active (i.e., it's not black), so I can't click on it. Why are the options for Photoshop and all of the other Photoshop related options, such as Merge to Panorama, etc., not active? In Preferences I have the following settings: File Format = TIFF; Color Space = ProPhotoRGB; Bit Depth = 16 bits; Resolution = 240; Compression = None. I am using Windows 7.

    Chris:
I have to apologize for being misleading on my request for help in
    resolving the problem.
Actually the version I am using is CS2 not CS3.
Yesterday I tried numerous times, and ways, to edit an image and each time
it refused to allow me to save it.
The software program just shut down. This evening when I decided to give it
    another try it worked perfect.
Guess the program just took the day off.
Thank you for offering to help
    Regards,

At the moment I would say it is uncertain whether Acrobat is completely ignoring the change, or whether the changes you are making aren't affecting the ink density. I have a suggestion for a test you could make to see which is the case.
When editing in Photoshop just add a box or mark on the image, for your tests.
    - If this box does not appear in Acrobat, you know Acrobat is not seeing the edit
    - If this box does appear in Acrobat, you know the problem is that your tool for changing ink densities is not taking effect.

Hi I have a question about shooting in Raw with my Canon EOS 6d.
I'm in the process of learning photography and my goal was to start shooting in raw.
I have Photoshop CS5. When I tried to edit my images in raw I received an error message stating, "The photoshop camera raw plug-in did not recognize the format. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your camera raw plug in."
In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6. My version of CS5 is 6.0.0.205. Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost. THANKS in advance!
    Heather

In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6.
That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.
Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost.
It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC
Or you can upgrade to CS6 (non-Cloud) and pay the upgrade fee
    Creative Suite 6
Or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Or join the Photoshop Photography Program (US9.99/month) and get PS CC+LR

  • Cant figure out how to edit raw images

I am using a windows computer and have Photoshop elements 10. I'm trying to edit raw images but every time I try to open a RAW file it says that its the wrong type of file. I tried downloading Camera raw. Elements 10 is compatible according to adobes' site, up to camera raw update 6.7, and that's the first version that my camera (Sony a-57) is compatible with camera raw. I followed the troubleshooting help and ended up deleting and re-installing Photoshop elements but it still says that its the wrong type of file and wont let me open it.

Which version of windows are you using?
This is the camera raw 6.7 updater you tried?
Adobe - Photoshop Elements : For Windows : Camera Raw 6.7 update for Elements 10
I'd try running the above 6.7 camera raw plugin updater from the linked page above.

  • Why won't my edited RAW images show after a LR re-install onto a new Hard Drive?

Hi there. Recently my hard drive took a (hike) and crashed - data may or may not be recoverable (Geeks are working on that), and I needed to reinstall my CS5 and Lightroom software to a new hard drive (I had to buy a new one). All of my RAW photos are stored on an external drive and were not harmed, thankfully.  Here is my dilemma. Most of the presets I used also went crashing with that hard drive, (yes I believe they were backed up but also on that hard drive...stupid I know-trust me I know!!) but most of them were the free ones from the adobe recommended users on this site. I actually found many of my favorites still posted on the Adobe site and re-downloaded and installed the presets I'd been using the past year and a half, and imade sure those presets were housed properly in their folder via Preferences in Lightroom. Great. I can continue on with my work. WRONG! When I went to go import a recent shoot that I had already edited, it imported the RAW files but none of the previous edits I had worked on for these photos were showing up...it was as if I didn't even touch them and they came right from my camera. What in the world is going on? I'm baffled...and freaking out as I have thousands upon thousands of edited shoots in RAW, and I fear that none of the edits and enhancements made to those photos are going to be present and I'll have to start over. Please tell me that all of my last 2 years of editing photos are still with the RAW files?!!!
I found a deal on a an HP Intell Core i7 processor) 2 TB hard drive tower, so I ended up needing to install the 64 bit versions of CS5 and Lightroom 3.6.
I did test out the RAW (.NEF) file in Photoshop CS5 and my edited RAW image came up "correctly" - so I know that the information is still with the RAW image...I just need it to work and show in lightroom, as it is easier to export the files to the sizes I need them to be.
Please be kind in your replies...I appreciate any help/guidance I can get on this. Plus the photos I need are for Seniors graduating in a few months here so you can imagine the panic mode is just a bit higher than normal. Many thanks.

The default location for the backups created by Lightroom on exit is in the same folder as the catalog itself (i.e. that would be on the same faulty drive). It is, however, possible to redirect those backups to a different destination, such as a different hard drive.....but only you know if you did that or not. Do you have any other backups, e.g. drive level backups?
Just to be clear, if you are importing afresh into a new catalog from Raw files that do have XMP sidecar files, you should see the final edited state from the previous catalog, but you won't see the individual history steps that got you there (as that's one of the things that are not included when you write XMP data from within Lightroom). If there is no XMP sidecar, you'll just get the original OOC image.

Perhaps you don't want to hear from me, I don't know.
I'll answer just this one little question.  Try to get your mind around what color management does, I promise it does make sense (outside of unexplained problems on particular computers).
You want to save your web image with the sRGB profile embedded because some Internet browsers are color managed, and with an embedded profile it's more likely someone will see your image colors just as you intended.
The assumption is that a lowly windows user with a cheap monitor and Internet Explorer will be seeing any image you save as "roughly" sRGB anyway.  Tagging the image with sRGB only affects those with color-managed browsers.
You're looking for the most possible consistency for the viewing audience.

  • When I am finished editing an image in Lightroom, what files or versions should I have in my database of images?

When I am finished editing an image in Lightroom, what files should I have in my Library?  I start with a RAW file or a tiff scan from film. I label that "A" as the archived file. I make a virtual copy to work on in the Develop module. When I am done, I save a file as a Print file with dimensions of the print.  Since Lightroom is non-destructive, do I need to save any other versions?  For instance, in Photoshop since the crop is destructive,
I edit an uncropped version and do the crop when I am working on the Print version.  What should I have for the most flexibility over time in Lightroom?
I use Lightroom CC on a IMAC desktop.  My photos are on a separate hard drive and are also backed up offline.  Im running OSX10.9.4.

You don't need to make a virtual copy before you edit the photo (this is optional, but most people don't bother as its extra work with little or no benefit). EXCEPTION: If you are doing multiple crops of the image, you would need virtual copies in that case, created after all other editing is completed.
You can't "save" from Lightroom, you can "export". (It's a terminology thing) You would need to export a photo at the desired dimensions for printing, but there's no need to retain this exported photo, you can consider it temporary and delete it once the print has been made, knowing that you can always re-create it exactly from Lightroom if you need it.
So to answer the question in your title, all you need to retain on your hard disk is your original image (and in the EXCEPTION case where you have multiple crops of the image, you would retain the multiple virtual copies in Lightroom).

  • Edit an image going from LR 5.3 into Photoshop CC

Can somebody help me with this problem?
Since today I'm having an issue when I try to edit a image in Photoshop (as a PSD) that's imported in LR (as a RAW-image).
So I use LR as my main working app for my images and from time to time I edit the photo from withing LR into Photoshop.
When I perform this operation all of my images (that I edit in Photoshop) have an overexposed area on the right side (1-2 cm). I never have had this issue before.
My images and catalog reside on a Lacie 1TB external disk.
My memory settings of Photoshop are not too heavy. Photoshop may use 70% of the memory. My iMac has 16Gb of RAM.
Does anyone have a solution for me?
    Thanks.
    G. Moors

Much easier to do a "repair" install, just install again over the top of itself. To do this, in the Creative Cloud desktop app, go to the Apps tab. In the lower half, labeled Find New Apps, there is a filter drop-down to the right. By default it says All Apps or Filters & Versions, click it and choose Previous Version. Find Photoshop on the list and the button will say “Install” but it will also be a drop-down menu. Choose CC 2014 (15.0). This will do a “repair” install over the top of your existing files.

  • When editing an image in ps from a lr 4.2 smart collections image not shown back in smart collection

    Hi all,
I have noticed at LR 4.2, that if you edit an image of a smart collection using PS (edit in PS function threw LR) and then save, the image is not appearing in the specific smart collection. Instead  image appears in the parent folder from where the smart collections retrieves images.
Has anyone notice that as well??
Forgot to mention that my parent folder with files is a collection created with virtual copies of seleveted files. If i edit in Photoshop directly threw this virtual copies collection then the files appears in smart collections as well. but if i edit in PS directly from smart collections then files dont appear into smart collections neither at the virtual copies collection!!

"obviously you use virtual copies when creating those collections" - why? It seems to me that this just increases the number of images in your Library for no benefit, unless you want to independently edit  the two image versions, one inside the Event collection and one outside the collection. If you ever wanted to see an unedited version of a particular image, LR retains the history (and before/after view) needed to show that, within the single thumbnail.
It is not necessary to make a Smart Collection in order to show only picked images from a particular event. You can use a Filter to show just the picked images and hide the rest. That means you can work inside the collection, and that means that when you edit an image to PS, the new LR version WILL inherit the collection membership as well as the Pick status, and therefore will immediately show next to the image it is based on.
I think this is going to be simpler and easier - BTW you don't have to go back to Library Grid view in order to apply filters, only in order to configure them in the first place. By saving Filter presets with a name, you can then select between these directly [from the menu at the right end of the Filmstrip] while you work, even in Develop- for example, "no filter", "picked", "unpicked", "rated two or more", whatever you want. Also you can switch between the recently-viewed collections and folders [from a menu when you click on the image details text toward the left end of the Filmstrip], to change the underlying content of the Filmstrip, to which you are applying these filters.
By "using selection criteria other than membership in a manual collection", I just meant: a special keyword, or a particular folder, or some combination of such things. But if you prefer to put images into a Collection, you can just use that directly and IMO you don't need the SC.
I personally like to have some kind of sufficiently identifying keywords on the image anyway, so that Exported copies will also show this information automatically... since an exported image will not reveal what collection its master image belonged to, that classification alone is not enough IMO.

  • Need help editing scanned images of old photo album pages PSE 9

Before I begin this project, I thought I'd get some advice from someone who has undertaken a similar project.  I have three photo albums from the 50's and 60's.  The albums were made by my mother who mounted the photos (mostly black and white but some color photos) on construction paper (of various colors) using the corner holders or glue.  She hand cut the construction paper so each page is not a perfect rectangle ( about 11" tall, 8.5" wide).  The pages were punched and put into a three-ring binder.
She added text to the edge of the photo and/or to the construction paper.  Each page contains one to 6 photos and text.  Each album has about 120 pages.  I want to keep the notes on the construction paper so I scanned each page into a TIF files, 400 dpi and stored the images in a separate folder for each volume.
I use (poorly) PSE 9.  I see it has a auto straighten/crop feature that can be used one photo at a time.  I tried the divide scanned images function and that did not fully separate all images on the page and also created an image for stray objects on the page such as an unused corner holder.  (I know those things have a better name but it escapes me now.)
I plan to create photo books for my siblings.  I am now thinking of cropping the image of each page (rather than each photo on the page) into a uniform size, adjusting levels, contrast and sharpness, saving this image to a JPEG file, and using these edited JPEG images to create the photo book.  Since each page was hand-cut, there will areas of white where one page was torn or cut smaller than another page.  Some pages will have blanks where old photos have been lost leaving behind only the corner things.  It won't be perfect but it will be an image of the album as it exists today.
    My questions are:
The pages are about 11 by 8.5.  Does anyone know a photo service that prints photo albums in a portrait layout in this size?  I  have been unable to find one; it looks like most online photo books are wider rather than taller.
Let's assume I use a company such as Shutterfly that offers a 12x12 format.  I assume it would be better to edit the images in PSE9 rather than any online software.  What should I do to keep the proportions in the current images true but make the image fit a 12x12 page, for example?
IS there any other editing software anyone can recommend that will speed this up, hopefully a software that would take multiple photos at one time, auto-straighten and auto crop to a set size?  And also auto contrast/level/sharp.  If I could use such auto features on these images and then go back and adjust the photos that did not play well with the auto features, that would save me time.
I appreciate anyone's input.  I dread doing this but we have one set of photos and 5 siblings so it has to be done.  Thanks!

    Hi,
Mentioning your issues one by one:
    1) PSE does not have any portrait Photobook available, so your thought was the best way to get the work done is by choosing the 12x12 - shutterfly one.
    2) PSe does a good job of editing the images. You can set your images of approx. 11x8  size to fit to the 12x12 page. Just choose a one photo page Layout for the page and then right click on the image to " Fit photo in the frame".
    3) If more edits are required for the image, you can easily go to Advanced mode and edit your photos, layouts, move the frames, images or add effects to the images.
    4) Photo book creation sure takes time. because, you want it to be the best. I am sure PSE would help you best here.
Go ahead and create you photobook. Inc ase you get stuck somewhere, you can always post here to get help!
    Cheers,

    can i Make this
    and other question please
can i convert text in image in flash to normal string ?
    please help

Images do not store text data in any isolateable manner, it is comprised of just pixels like anything else in the image.  You would need to develop some form of complicated text recognition program to be able to extract text from an image, and I don't believe anyone has.
