Editing material from a commercial DVD

I'd like to mess around with footage from a commercial dvd...in this case a nice quality criterion disk. This is my own dvd and this is strictly for the practice and personal use. How do I transfer the movie to FCP for editing? I've used Handbrake to successfully rip the movie into both Mpeg4 and Avi files (Mac the Ripper is not yet available for Universal). When I file/edit/import/files for either of these formats, I get the following message:
File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.
...so the question is, how do I get this to work? Am I formatting all wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the postings.
Completely understand about the 1st Problem. I will speak of it no more.
2nd Problem solved...again, by searching the forums and culling, culling.
The solution is to import the original footage from iMovie into quicktime, then open with FCP.
I am, however, running into a problem of rendering that footage. The quick fix is to use "unlimited RT", which allows me to actually view the footage, make my edits, etc., but I will eventually have to render at some point. If you have suggestions, please post...otherwise, I'll probably find the solution searching the forums.

How can I edit material from 1 or more dvds that I created from my own filmed material in iMovie but which I no longer have in iMovie

You need to 'reverse engineer' them :
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • I can not edit video from my new DVD Camcorder...

I recently purchased a Canon DC210 in hopes of learning to edit the movies I make with it before taking my honeymoon to Alaska in May, but I am not able to import the video from the disks.  Is iDVD capable of doing what I am wanting to do i.e.. import, arrange, and edit scenes from the mini DVDs?

Unless I am missing something the list actually skips over my Model Number (Canon DC210)? I am still not seeing anything that tells me that '08 is going to solve any of my problems. I currently have iDVD 6.0.4 and it doesn't seem to have the capabilities I need. I don't think I am going to invest in another piece of software if I am not able to find something that specifically says it will work with my camera or media type.
Can you point me some where that does actually say it will?

  • Can I download a song or audio clip from a commercial DVD? (and how?)

I don't even know if this is the right forum but I've tried searching in iTunes & iDVD and can't find the answer.
Is it possible to download a short section of audio, a song for example, from a DVD of a mainstream Hollywood movie? If so, how? Can I save it in iTunes so that I can listen on my iPod?
Sorry if you're offended by such a basic question.
    Mike

    No.
Commercial DVD's are encrypted to prevent just such a thing.
It is ILLEGAL to break this encryption.

  • Making a Quicktime movie clip from non-commercial DVD

I want to capture a five minute clip of video from a non-commercial (i.e. homemade) DVD and save as a Quicktime movie. How do I go about this?

You will need QuickTime Pro and the Viewer, both available for purchase from the Apple Store. One word of caution, when I try to pull video from my home-made DVDs, QT only play the first 2 to 6 seconds of the video that may be almost an hour long. I am trying to find a solution, but before I would recommend that you spend the $50 to purchase Pro and Viewer, I would wait until there is some resolution to this problem.

  • Best sequence settings for editing HD video material from Nikon D3S

    Hello there,
My quesstion is, what are the best settings in FCP for editing material from the Nikon D3S?
At this point I had a sequence (automatically generated from FCP) with settings
    Frame Size: 1440X1080 Aspect Ratio (1440X1080) (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD 1440 X 1080
    Field Dominance Upper (Odd)
    Editing Timebase: 25
    QuickTime Video Settings
    Compressor: HDV 1080i50
Now, when I place a video clip form the D3S into the timeline, in the preview screen it does not fill the frame. I have to grab the corners and pull it to fill the gaps.
I opened the same video clip in QT to check on the inspector and this is what is telling me:
    Apple OpenDML JPEG, 1280 X 720
    FPS: 24
    Normal size: 1280X 720
    Current size: 1280 X 720 (Actual)
What do I need to do, so that the sequence settings are very similar to my AVI files? Or to make the same? I assume that if I pull the corners to fill the frame, I am loosing quality? Is that the case?
Since I need to deliver this today I will continue working on the sequence as with the former settings, but I am wondering that if I have to change the settings, will this affect my already edited material? Do I then need to start a new sequence from scratch?
Sorry, I guess too many questions, but they all lead to the same thing
    Thanks a lot!
    Emil

I have a D3s. I'm using FCP7, it's been awhile since I used version 5 so all I can do is let you know my workflow with ver.7 If you convert to ProRes 422 1080x720 24fps, it works very well, change the audio from 44 to 48kHz and set the frame rate to 24 instead of 23.98
    Here's what I do.
    1. Copy the CF card to the HD of the computer
    2. Open Compressor, in these next steps we'll make a custom Droplet.
    a. In the Settings tab, select Formats > Quick Time > Apple ProRes 422
    b. Drag this to "Drag Settings & Destinations Here" and click it
    c. In the Inspector, select Encoder
    d. Select Video Enabled, then hit Settings. Frame rate 24 > OK
    e. Select Audio Enabled, then hit Settings. Choose 48 kHz
    f. Save As. Name it. It will be in > Settings tab > Custom
    g. Click your new Cutom setting
    h. File > Create Droplet
    i. select your new custom setting
    j. save it to the desktop, leave destination as source.
    3. open the Droplet,
    4. drag all you D3s clips in, change destination to a new folder
Now you have all your original .DVI and the converted ProRes clips
    5. Open FCP, select Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings
    6. in the Sequence Setting tab select Apple ProRes 422 1280x720 48kHz
    7. Clip Duplicate and give it a new name
    8. change the Editing Timebase to 24 > OK
    9. select the summary tab click Create Easy Setup
    10. name it, give it a description > Create
    11. the next time your open FCP use this Easy Setup
    12. your D3s clip should not need rendered now.
    13. When your done editing use Send to Compressor
    14. Vimeo will accept a wide varity of formats
    15. I use Quicktime H.264 with settings set to best
    16. For Blu-ray I use Export to QT Movie and use Sony DVD Architect to author the BD at 35 mbps, but that's another story.

  • Importing material from dvd

does anyone know how to import video from a dvd for editing?
i have material that isn't on a camcorder, it's contained in dvd and i can't seem to figure out how to import.
    thank you!
    claire

It would be helpful if you would read the posts you are responding to carefully before responding. I don't appreciate being accused of some illegality. My stated goal was to rip recorded DVDs. MY recorded DVDs. Not commercial copyright protected stamped DVDs. There are no copyright or legal issues involved, which was what half your response indicated. I detailed to the salesperson exactly what I was trying to do, and he stated as a fact the imac would do it, and the help text also indicates it would do it.
I''d agree with you NOW that recorded DVDs are not suitable for further editing--the results are poor based on my experience. But I was also told I'd be able to do this with no loss or even better looking results--not that I believed the latter. I didn't think the results would look like third or fourth generation. If I had been told that the day of purchase, I wouldn't have.
What does "you can import video from a CD or DVD" mean if not, in the vernacular, ripping a DVD? I don't believe imovie indicates anywhere that it ONLY imports DV files, and it will import .mov which I assume it converts to .dv. Imovie does its own conversion in some cases, just not in the case of ripping from a recorded DVD, which it states and was advertised as doing.
    Also from imovie help:
"Importing video from a VHS tape or other non-digital format
You can also have your video transferred to digital format by a company that offers digital processing services. You can often choose whether to have your footage transferred to DVD or digital videotape. After your video has been digitally processed, you can import it into iMovie."
What use would it be to have it transfered to DVD if imovie couldn't import it, as this statement indicates you can do?
Seems to me Apple intended at some point in time to provide this ability in imovie and then changed its mind. Not providing the ability restricts my ability to import/copy/rip information I've recorded. That makes no sense.
Note that I am not advocating being able to rip commercial copyright protected stamped DVDs.
Sorry--I don't agree with most of the points in your post. imovie was intended to be a fairly comprehensive all-purpose edit tool from what I can see.
    Again, from imovie help:
"Movie HD supports importing a variety of video formats, including DV, widescreen DV, high definition (HDV), MPEG-4 (Simple Profile), and more. You can also capture live video with your iSight (including the built-in iSight on your iMac) and send it directly to iMovie HD.
If you have video or audio clips stored on your computer, you can drag them into an iMovie HD project from your desktop. You can even drag video and audio clips from one iMovie HD project to another!
...Magic iMovie can import your footage from a DV or HDV camcorder via FireWire and assemble it into a movie, complete with a title, transitions between scenes, and even a music track of your choosing."
Nothing there about only importing .dv. And even if imovie was .dv only, how would someone new to macs know that, given all this text and the salesman telling you otherwise! Very confusing!
    Regards, Dale

  • Material from a DVD to Final Cur Pro

Hi, I´ve got material from a client on a DVD which I know need to get into a Final Cut Pro project. Importing the files doesn´t work, so what would be the best way to get the video material (with audio) into my project? Some DVD rip software available?

    Hi Jesse
A free option to extract material from DVD to many different options can be found below:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
MPEG Streamclip basically extracts the audio and video in to a format that allows you to import/edit etc., in anything from iMovie through to FCP.
Another option is DVDxDVPro. This one is paid for but when I compared this (which I purchased) with the free MPEG Streamclip I could not see any difference.
Takes a while tho... Make sure you set the in and out points to speed things along. I also capture the DVD to the HD to speed it up a tad as well.
    Best of luck.

  • Import and edit commercial DVD

Is there any way to import a commercially available DVD Movie and edit it, then burn to DVD. I want to remove some language from a couple of movies. The usual TV versions have this done already but my VCR tapes are far from the quality of DVDs.

The Terms of Use of these Apple Discussions prevent us from discussing how to defeat copyright protection.

  • Edit Wedding Video from Ritz yesvideo dvd in imovie, PLEASE HELP????

    Hello:
I hope someone can help me with this. I had only the tapes from my wedding so I brought them to Ritz to have a simple dvd done. I asked them if I would be able to edit later and they said yes. Now when I watch it (on the dvd player or mac) it is like a real dvd, like bought but 3 hours of "boring" recordings. You know what I mean. It needs the editing but I do not know how to get it into imovie...
Before I go back to ritz, can someone tell me how to do that, where I get my files and what to do so I can import it to my imovie library and start working?
The dvd has a menu and chapters and all that, it says you can purchase a digital scrapbook for windows to edit everything, but obviously with my mac I don't need that and no one ever mentioned it to me either...
Thanks for all the help I can get...
    Sabine

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
    Drop2DV (free)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • How to Import material from DVD

First let me say I do not intend to rip a movie off a DVD.
My source footage is from a family DVD, I would like to know how to import selected parts of this DVD to use as material for editing, naturally I also want the audio to import with it.
Any advice on how to do this would be most welcome.

  • Play movies from commercial DVD disks using an external DVD player?

Is it possible to play movies from commercial DVD disks using an external DVD player on Mac OS X 10.5.6? Thanks.

You might not need to install Tiger. If you pop in the installer DVD there might be the DVD Player under Additional Software/Applications. Then you can install that and watch DVDs.

Since you mention "commercial DVDs" I asume they use some kind of copy-protection.

  • Is it possible to Edit Mpegs from DVDs?

Hi there. I am just strating a project, a museum installation, that requires footage to be edited together from a variey of sources. Some of these are DVDs. How can I get footage from the DVDs and into FCP for editing. I can convert into Mpeg4 using Handbrake, but can I edit this? What could I use to convert directly into mpeg2, or better still some .mov format like DV.
I apologise, all these file formats, muxing, encryption, decryption, encoding, codecs does my head in and I need some help to clarify what would be best.
    Thanks for your advice
    Peter

    A simple hardware way :
Use a home DVD player - connect audio and video(YC) outputs to a Canopus AD 100 converter - connect the firewire of the AD100 to your Mac - open log and capture in FCP (select non controllable device) - play the DVD with your remote control - pause - then click capture now - play the DVD. You will get directly DV files on your hard disk.
This way you won't get headache. Software way is also available (just write to me : [email protected]
