Editing metadata with masters offline, then syncing XMP

I love LR (and Aperture for that matter) for the ability to reference a large collection of external masters and keep previews and metadata locally on a MacBook.  I usually edit the metadata in LR -- rating, rotating, etc.  In continuous XMP export mode which I'd set, and the external harddrive is mounted, the sidecars next to the masters get updated immediately.
However, when I edit away from my external harddrive, and then plug it in, I don't see LR noticing and updating the XMPs in need of updating -- those next to the masters of the images whose metadata I touched offline.  I have to manually select the "suspect" images and do Sync XMP on them.  So in order not to write down an exact list of all the images I touched every time offline, I select a whole shoot and run Sync XMP on it -- fortunately, that updates only those XMPs which indeed need updating.
In LR Beta 4.1 I'm using now, I don't see a way to manually Sync XMP for the whole library easily -- how can you select all photos and run Sync XMP on them?
And for those lucky previewers with 1.0 -- is it smart enough to sync those XMPs which need syncing on its own, or you still have to manually initiate the sync after reconnecting the masters with their sidecars?

We've discussed it with John Beardy at The Dam Book's forum:

    I am trying to edit my music list and then sync it to my iPhone 5 so I don't run out of storage space. However, I see the check marks on the iTunes library but am unable to uncheck them? How do I manually edit what will be synced to my phone? (the check marks are not bolded, does this mean they are not in my library but only on my phone?)

    You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
    Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone.

  • Apply metadata to unlinked photos, then sync MD when files available

    I share my master catalog between a desktop and a laptop. The desktop has all the master files (on RAIDs, archived drives, etc.), so all I have access to when I use LR3 on my laptop are the previews of my files. While I know I obviously can't edit (develop) missing files, what I'd love to be able to do is annotate on my laptop, then when I copy the catalog over to the desktop, it will sync this metadata to the actual xmp sidecar files. As it stands now, one can only apply metadata when the linked files are attached.

    So, what the camera writes, the Exif metadata, is inside the photo file, or in another hidden file for each photo?
    It’s “inside” the file.
    How come then it happens that sometimes the date changes after you've written the pictures on a CD, and imported them from that later... shouldn't the metadata stay with the file? It happens mostly with early camera phone pictures...
    A photo can lose the metadata in imperfect copies, or - in the case of early camera phones - there may have been none at all. In which case iPhoto uses the File “Date Created” instead.
    I have a lot of pictures whose dates I really had to change because they were wrong - I just hope this work won't go down the drain further down the road... perhaps when importing into a new Mac, or when using a different program altogether...?
    In the case of moving to a new Mac:
    Simply move the Library to the new machine. That will get all the data, metadata, originals, edited versions and so on.
    In using a different application:
    1. If it understands the iPhoto Library (like Aperture, for instance) then you will have no issue
    2. If it doesn’t, then you export the Pics from iPhoto (File -> Export) and check the box at Title and Keywords. This will mean that your Titles, Keywords +and Descriptions+ (though not explicitly mentioned) will be written to the IPTC data.

  • Anyone use CS3 with Win7 offline file syncing?

    I just recently upgraded to the 64-bit version of Windows 7. It has a feature that allows you to cache network files to your hard drive for working on when you are disconnected or have a slow connection with the network (Sync Center) and can be convienient for people like me who telecommute. Most applications seem to work with this, but I've found when trying to save a file from Photoshop CS3 onto this shared drive when its in offline mode results in an error saying the file name was not valid (the file name is valid and can be saved to my harddrive normally). Likewise when I try to save a file to this shared drive in offline mode in InDesign it says that it can't save "under a new name".
    Anyone else having this issue or know how to resolve it short of not using the Sync function in Windows?

    I am suddenly getting that same message. "The file name is not valid" - and up until a few minutes ago, it was a valid name.
    But I am using Reader X and Windows 7

  • Editing metadata in a TIFF image

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to edit TIFF image metadata using ImageIO v1.1 APIs, but something goes wrong...
    For a TIFFImageWriter I get the following results:
    writer.canInsertEmpty = true
    writer.canInsertImage = true
    writer.canRemoveImage = false
    writer.canReplaceImageMetadata = false
    writer.canReplacePixels = true
    writer.canReplaceStreamMetadata = false
    writer.canWriteEmpty = true
    writer.canWriteRasters = false
    writer.canWriteSequence = trueSo editing metadata with writer.replaceImageMetadata is not possible (I verified this, an exception is thrown). I thought I could remove an entire image and reinsert it with new metadata, but as you can see writer.removeImage is unavailable, too.
    How can I edit a TIFF image without rewriting it to a totally new image file?
    Any help will be appreciated,
    Giuseppe

    Huh... I am in bitmap... OK, how would I go about changing to RGB? Not a complete novice, but never had a similar problem before.

  • Aperture masters and metadata with other DAMs?

    OK, after the recent lack of an announcement about Aperture updates or revisions at PMA I'm evaluating other DAMS: Bridge, Lightroom, iView (am I missing any other good ones?)
    (Off Topic: Unlike many it's not the unsupported RAW issue that has me upset, rather it's the way that features that have been in the program since v1.0 still don't operate smoothly or slow down for no good reason. Why does doing a "Select All" on my 32K image library take 15-minutes?)
    I exported a batch of masters with .xmp sidecar files yesterday. While some of my IPTC metadata got placed in the sidecar files some didn't. Particularly troubling was the fact that ratings didn't appear in Lightroom.
    I'm looking for suggestions on getting masters out of Aperture in a way that preserves as much metadata as possible.
    Thomas

    You don't mention the file types - that's important. Ratings will be carried across if they belong to raw files - they get into the xap:photoshop area of the xmp sidecar file. Tested and verified.
    JPEGs and other publicly-documented file types have to be treated separately. Aperture exports an xmp file, but Lightroom and other Adobe applications expect the metadata to be in the file itself, not in a sidecar. So Lightroom will not read the metadata - including ratings - in xmps exported for these file types. You could add them as temporary keywords.
    It's also possible to use iView as a go between. Import the export files into iIVew, which can read sidecars for jpegs. Then use Sync in iView to write the metadata into the file.
    You can also use the Annoture plug in. Add all your files to iView, then run Annoture. It copies the metadata into iView. Again you can then sync into the files.
    There is also an Aperture plugin somewhere for exporting files as DNGs.

    I have an older version of Adobe Digital Editions (around 3 years old) and was very happy with it.
    Then I had problems with my Kobo Reader and asked a friend who works in IT to assist. She could not fix the Kobo but she messed up my Addobe. She downloaded version three and I have an account and a password - was not able to transfer my books from my reader to version three (and I don't like the lay-out - I would prefer to stay with the old version as I also loose all my download date info..)
    But all the books I have bought over the last three years are in the old Adobe Digital and I cannot access them any more. When I use it I get the message "that the document is licensed to a different account. I can't even open the books on my computer.
    When I go to my Kobo library, I cannot also not open my books and get the message "this doc is protected by adobe digital rights management and is not currently authorized for use with your adobe. please sign in with your authorized adobe id and try again"
    I believe the problem is that I do not seem to have a digital id for my old adobe or that the Kobo is not in sync with it anymore.
    can you please help me - going on vacation in three days and cannot go without books.

    Please authorize ADE 3 with same credentials that you used with older version of ADE

    In iTunes, try signing out of your Apple ID & then back in: click on iTunes Store on the left sidebar of iTunes, click on your Apple ID on the top right, sign out, sign back in.  Then try to sync your purchased music to your phone again.

    16bit? Pixels extending beyond the canvas? (from a crop with delete unused pixels turn off).  Have you previously been saving PSD files?
    IME you sometimes have to tell Photoshop that the first save of a session is JPG, and it remembers from there on.  The way to 'tell' Photoshop that JPG, or PDF, or PNG etc are now your preferred format is to Ctrl (Cmd) click on that format in the Save As drop down list.  So long as the file does not have parameters that your chosen format does not support, then this should work for you.
    [EDIT]  Just noticed that you did include 'Crop' in the subject line.  Do you have 'Delete cropped pixels' checked?

    I downloaded some albums using my iphone (3GS), I then synced it with my PC. Now all the album artwork has disappeared off my iphone but not off itunes on the PC. How can I get the album artwork back onto my iphone?

    I had the similar problem last night and found a solution (although it takes more than a few clicks).  Highlight all the album tracks in itunes on the pc and right click "get info". Check the artwork box in this window.  I found that the now playing art was showing up in the itunes window, but on songs that were missing artwork showed nothing in the get info box.  When I replaced the artwork by using the artwork command, or manually adding it into the "get info" window.  It was annoying but my iphone updated every album.

    As long as the apps and ibooks are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

    how can you upload a movie to I tunes then sync with Ipad2?

    There are several options to choose from its either you will buy directly from itunes which go directly to movie. Another option is that convert first your movie to mpeg4 by using any converter software, then after converted drga the file (movie) to itunes library. Next thing you will do is to click your account (your ipad device) then look movie tabs then check sync movies.

    I forgot the passcode to turn off restrictions. I have restored my iPad back to the factory settings and then synced it with the latest backup. The restrictions are still on and it is asking for the passcode. Can someone tell me how to get that off.

    The only option is to wipe the device clean and restore it to factory settings.  Hope you have a backup.
    Follow the instructions in  iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 to restore the device to factory settings.
    Once you have setup the device as a new one, you can then sync it back with your iTunes account and all your music, apps, contacts and any other content sync'ed with iTunes will be loaded on the device. Any content that is stored only on the device and not sync'ed with iTunes, like app logins or data, will be lost during this process. Be forewarned that this is a long process and can take a couple of hours or more to complete. This can be painful, but it is necessarily so to prevent users from working around the security settings. After the restore is complete, you can setup a new Restrictions passcode. Make a note of the passcode to avoid this situation in future.

    My guess is that you previously synced the iPhone with a different computer in the past. You will probably want to set up Home Sharing.
