Editing MP3s

I have an MP3 file I would like to cut a portion off the front of. I am familiar with using Audacity, but after I edit the file and export to a new MP3, it usually is between 2 to 3 times as large a file as the original. Does iTunes have any plug-ins for editing songs? If not, is there any free software out there with good compression settings?

I believe Audacity has to decode an mp3 to wav before it can be edited, which is not the best option for editing mp3s. In iTunes, though, you can set custom stop and start times for songs (right-click, Get Info, Options). If you actually want to edit the mp3, mp3DirectCut will do it without having to decompress to wav first.

  • Cannot edit mp3's for ringtones

Hello All, new to the board. I have a 8320 (ATT) that will not let me edit mp3's for ringtones. I understand that Roxio for Blackberry has some features disabled, including the ability to edit. Oh, BTW I am using BDM 4.5. What is the workaround? Should I install full version of Roxio Muisc Creator? Which version has proven to work, 9 or 10?
In reading postings on the net I am seeing that the Roxio software for Blackberry has issues. Any help for a newbie BB owner would be appreciated. Does BB tech support monitor these boards?

BB tech do not monitor these boards, it is written on top of the discussions list :
"These forums are a peer-to-peer support channel in which users help other users. While Research In Motion Limited will participate from time to time, please visit the Support & Services tab to access direct support options that may be available to you."
About your question, I don't use Roxio. I just take any mp3 tool to cut mp3 into a small file.

  • Edit MP3s in iTunes

Is there a way to edit MP3s in iTunes? For instance, if I have a 1 hour file I want to split into 3 20 minute files? I know I can do it by changing the "Start Time" and "End Time", but that requires duplicating the file and any change you make to one copy is made on another so I cannot have 3 different start/end times. Plus, the file size is still 100% of original.
Also, are there any fade-in, fade-out effects you can add? Any suggestions?

I am sure there are plenty of audio editing software titles out there; I actually use GarageBand which came with my computer. I don't know how computer saavy you are, but it didn't take long to learn the program using common sense and the help screens. It is very memory intensive, though - converting to aiff. then when you export to iTunes it goes in as aiff, but you can always convert back to mp3 or whatever and delete the aiff. And you have to re-enter all the song info. Now that I think about it.... it IS a lot of work, but you can do so much and you probably already have the GarageBand for free.

I would like to edit mp3s, i.e., cut unwanted portions, splice , etc. Is there already software out there to do this, perhaps that I'm unaware of?

LOL, I have Audacity, it was one of the things I was trying when I made my first podcast. Thanks, Marty!

  • How can I edit mp3 info w/o iTunes for free?

I just switched from a PC to a Macbook Pro. On my PC, I simply right-clicked on an mp3 file, clicked properties, & I edited all of the info contained within that mp3 file. Then, once cleaned up, I imported the mp3 files into iTunes. So now I want to edit some mp3 info on a bunch of mp3 files on my Macbook Pro before I import them into iTunes. I tried editing in the "Get Info" window, but it's not editable. So how can I do this? And how do I do this for free? I'd prefer not to have to download a program to do what seems like such a simple task, but If I have to use another program, I want something that is clean, simple, & free. Thanks.

    Hi Ingo,
Not sure that you read my entire entry. I want to edit the mp3 files BEFORE importing them into iTunes. I have dozens of albums & songs that are missing tons of info like title, artist, track #, etc, or the mp3 files have info in them that I don't want. I'd prefer to edit them & clean them all up first before importing them all into iTunes because they will just have blank boxes & they will all be grouped together at the bottom of my iTunes window, & I won't know which file is which. Right now they're in seperate folders, so I know which artist & album they are. maybe there's a way to do this in iTunes, but from my experience, I've always had trouble knowing which file is with which artist / album when I import several albums missing key info. That's why I like to add it before importing. I guess I could just import 1 album at a time, but that seems very time consuming. Let me know what you think.

  • Cannot edit mp3 information after updating to iOS5

I updated my iPod touch 4 to iOS5 2 days ago, and then I found that it messed up part of the mp3 information I set up in my itunes libarary.
(Like losing my covers and albums missing from the artist column...etc)
Not a major mess-up so I thought I'd just fix them from iTunes.
I edited the information, and everything looks fine when I see it on iTunes on my PC, but nothings changes on my iPod.
I tried to sync my iPod, but it doesn't help either. Everything still looks messed up.
I've been trying to fix this problem for 2 days to no avail.
Is this just me, or it is a general problem for iOS5? (Coz I know some people have had their whole device wiped clean by iOS5.)
    Please help. Thanks a million!

I've seen that same issue on my iPhone. I still don't have a fix for it

  • How......to Edit MP3 file tag inf

Is there any way to edit the "tag information" or file properties?(ie. artist, track no., album) for an mp3 file before transferring to my Zen Xtra? I often download files or convert cassettes to wav/mp3s and can't figure out how to edit the artist, track no., album info before transferring to the Zen. I've tried right clicks & edits from Creative Media Source and can't find a way to edit this info. Thanks for any help.

In the older versions of MediaSource, you have to import the songs into the PC Music Library and then edit the track information from PC Music Library. In the latest MediaSource v3.30.2?(which you can download from the Web update), you can edit the track information in both MediaSource's My Computer and PC Music Library. It is highly recommended that you download and install the latest MediaSOurce and its various plugins.

  • Edit MP3 Information by tabbing to next field

Hi everyone.  I recentely updated my iTunes to the latest version (10.4) on Snow Leopard.  After the update I have lost the ability to tab through the various fields while editing a MP3 in list view.  For example, when I click to edit the song Name, in previous versions I was able to hit tab to jump to the Artist field, then tab again to Album, etc.
With the current version I am unable to do so.  Is there anyway to bring this functionality back or downgrade back to iTunes 10.3?  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Editing mp3s and WAVs

Maybe the wrong forum but I thought you guys might know. I'm looking for a simple program that will let me do some simple editing on music mp3s and perhaps on WAV files as well.
Mostly, I want to be able to cut and add material in a song (silence, combining tracks, etc.), and to change sound levels in part or all of a song.
Freeware is fine if it works well, otherwise I'm willing to pay. I haven't delved into Garage Band too much, but when I have it's seemed rather complex for what I want.
    Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

As far as I can tell, all the things you want to do, except importing WAV, can be done with the freeware editor Audacity.
If you're willing to pay $79.95, you can have the very good shareware editor (my opinion) Sound Studio.
Another ($30) editor is Amadeus II (15 day trial available) , which might be sufficient for your purpose.
    Hope this helps.

  • Importing and Editing MP3's

Hello. Garageband just isn't intuitive enough for me to figure out and the help file wasn't much help. I'd like to import an MP3 and edit it in Garageband. Can someone point me in the right direction as to how to do this?
    Thanks;
    Henry

Thanks all, the tips helped. It makes sense now, but I really didn't think it was as intuitive as let's say Quicktime was for editing video.
I find GB to have as simple a user interface as is possible, considering all the capabilities and options it has built into it (especially w/ GB 4). You'll be surprised how quickly you'll learn how to do all kinds of things with it.
Thanks again for the assist, take care.
    Glad to help, Henry.

  • Editing mp3s on iPhone then re-syncing: FAIL

Hello, I have a number of mp3 karaoke tracks on my iPhone. I edited some on my PC (removed the first few seconds of silence) and on attempting to sync with my iPhone, only some edited tracks are accepted, others remaining as before, i.e. with the period of silence at the start of the track (2-15 secs as is common with such tracks). Interestingly, it allowed the syncing of one complete playlist from iTunes but not two others of the same size. Any ideas appreciated? Thanks, Mike

I'm not understanding your question -- restore your iPhone from what? If you have pictures already on your phone that you want to protect (and/or remove from your phone) you can import them from the phone to a computer. That is a good idea in any event as there are a number of ways the photos on your phone can be lost (loss of the phone itself, hardware problem, software glitch, etc.). • Editing mp3

I need to do some basic mp3 editing (just clipping, nothing fancy). Is there a way to do it in QuickTime without recompressing the files? Do people use Audion? I used Audion but for some reason I am not able to open certain mp3 files in the editor and don't know why. It is no longer supported. Prefer to use QuickTime if I could. Thanks.

For that I would use Audacity (free):

but you can also do this in GarageBand.
