Editing of Books Published on iBooks

I just finished a book published on iBooks for the iPad, by Annie Proulx, "Accordion Crimes". This comment has nothing to do with the literary work, but everything to do with the editing and publishing.
In the most polite terms possible, the publishing work was very, very disappointing. I found numerous spelling errors, misplaced emphasis (the word "eyes" appeared in italics throughout the 500= page book, for no apparent reason), some just plain new words never seen before in the English language which were not the product of the writer, I'm sure. It felt a lot like I was being asked to proofread, and that I was working with a draft.
If this was the final version of the book, then the software used to publish it is not ready for prime time.
I don't want my money back, but I sure do think that Apple needs to look into the publishing that they're selling. If this book was a representative sample, it's pretty shoddy work.
If this is the wrong forum for these comments, please accept my apologies, but I found no other channel to accept product quality feedback.

Since the bookstore is part of itunes, you should send feedback here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
However, it sounds like you should also send feedback to the publisher. Coding books for the ibookstore is a tricky process (despite the people who tell you it's a snap), and they need to know that what they're doing isn't working.
You should also have a link in your receipt to report a problem; you could use that, too, if you do decide you want a refund.

  • Looking for books published using iBooks Author

I'm looking for books published with iBooks Author and there's no way to search for this in the store as far as I know. If you've published a book using IBA, please post the link in the comments. Thank you

I´m thinking about what size of the text I should use.
Right now I have size 16 Palatino and small blocks of text so it should be easy to read
My experience is this: 16 point text looks (and is experienced as) standard print text in books.
Here's a trick for iPad vermisilitude I use on my iMac with 1920 x1080 resolution: In iBooks Author I set the screen to "Fit Page" and then resize the screen manually to 92%. This very closely matches an iPad screen. In my case, it helps with selecting fonts.
    All the best.

P.S. This would be better in a new forum.

  • HT5071 If you have had a book published through IBooks Author, what has been your overall experience with the process and the company?

I am interested in publishing a children's book through IAuthor.  What has been your experience with the company?  As a first time author, what pitfall should I avoid? Can I learn about the terms of the contract before entering into an agreement?

Naturally. Once you apply for an account, you'll get the contract, which you are then free to accept or not.

Can i Publish an ibook in different languages? I mean three different books

I believe so - release them as editions or a series (see iTunes Producer meta data). ABC Title, Edition 1 English; ABC Title, Edition 2 Spanish;  ABC Title, Edition 3 German...that sort of thing, but with the titles translated, of course
See the store for existing examples.

  • If i already published a book can i sell my book as an ibook with apple??

    Hi there ,
If i already published a book can I sell my book as an ibook with apple??

Apple do not  really get concerned about authors who publish  elsewhere.
If you want to publish and sell your books on the Apple  store, you will need to open a paid book account, submit your bank details and  study and agree contracts and you will needs a USA   EIN tax form.
Your books need to be in an acceptable format, ePub  or if you want the interactive facilities of iBooks Author, you can download the free software and after learning about the application and  its functions and  facilities.
If you  do not want to be involved  - you can use aggregators, who will do most of the work, but will  need you to cover a fairly substancial outlay first.

  • Do I need to apply for copyright when I publish a book to the iBook store through iBooks Author?

I am about to publish a book to the iBook store through iBooks Author. Would I need to apply for some sort of copyright? I have no experience so please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you

Copyright is an important legal issue and certainly complex. But in general, a good place to start is registering your book with the Library of Congress. You can do it by mail, and they will grant you a Library of Congress control number which you can place on your copyright page. This will register your book as your copyright and is well worth checking out.
Though, and I'm not sure, but you may have to have an ISBN so some cost is involved.
    Hope this helps.

  • When I publish from ibooks author will the pages flip like my other books

When I publish from ibooks author will the pages flip like my other books the preview only slides side to side

Pages continue to slide rather than flip for the horizontal orientation.  In the vertical orientation, the text scrolls up-and-down like a web page (again as shown in iBooks Author if you change the previewed orientation).  I'm not sure why Apple went with the different GUI for their textbooks, but its the same for the ones authored by the big publishers.  If you want to see what the format is like on the iPad, there's a short free textbook (Wilson's Life on Earth) and sample chapters from others available from the iBookstore.
On a side note, one interesting thing about using texts in the two different orientations is that the formating changes as well.  Figures that show up as larger embedded images in the horizontal layout are smaller images in the left margin in the vertical layout, at least in Wilson's book.

  • I have written a book with the ibooks application and I have gone through all the steps of publishing it to the itunes book store, but how can I be sure it went through?  I got the big green check and it says it was uploaded, but what do I do now?  How do

When you are having problems with a site - consider weather between you and it and amount of traffic (time of day).
Bad weather can cause problems with a connection as it travels on the information highway - hazard a guess all traffic that went through Buffalo is being routed elsewhere.
Bad weather can slow down handshake etc to the point of requiring too many resends - so Ibook is timing you out.

  • Can I sell books made with iBooks Author in the UK iTunes store?

    Hi all,
I'm a UK-based musician who publishes a range of tuition books on playing the bass guitar. I've spent the last few months devleoping one of these books in iBooks Author, and the end results are really impressive. I submitted the book to the iTunes store last week (after setting up a US Tax ID etc) and it was approved in the US store yesterday. Here's a link to the relevant page:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/bass-players-guide-to-scales/id534940432?mt=13
My question is, is there any way I can make this book available to customers in all countries? I filled in all the info/pricing etc for all countries when I uploaded the book, but it's only approved for sale in the United States so far. Is there just a delay in the other stores being approved or can it only be the US for textbooks? I notice that the UK iTunes store does not have a textbooks category. Am getting worried now that I shouldn't have put it in the Textbooks category, although I don't remember being able to choose another option.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Cheers
    Stuart

It is possible to publish books created in iBooks Author outside of the US. They will just not be able to appear in the Textbooks category as it's currently a US only category.
I can see in the UK store that you've got two editions of the same book for sale. One has screen grabs and is clearly filled with iBA features for £9.99 and the other at £6.49 with no preview images which I assume is in standard ePub format - both are in the Arts & Entertainment -> Music category.
    Congrats!

  • How to publish an iBook without using iBooks Author?

I've been reading the various pages on the subject and what I've gathered is:
-If you publish through iBooks Author, you can only sell your book through iBooks.
Is there an option in which you can upload a pdf version of the book?
If so, are you required to provide an ISBN or is there a way around it?

You don't have to use iBooks Author (and books produced by iBA can only be read in the iBooks app on iPads and Macs, they can't be read on iPhones nor iPod Touches), but you can't sell PDFs in the iBookstore - but you can sell epubs in it.

Selling books on iTunes : http://www.apple.com/itunes/working-itunes/sell-content/books/
    From the above FAQ :
Do I need an International Standard Book Number (ISBN)?
No, an ISBN is recommended but not required for any book you are offering on the iBooks Store. An ISBN uniquely identifies the book and its current edition, and helps you to ensure that you are marketing the right book. The ISBN is also required for reporting your book's sales to industry reporting agencies and charting organizations.
To obtain an ISBN in the U.S., contact Bowker. To obtain an ISBN outside the U.S., contact the International ISBN Agency.

  • Anyway to convert purchased hardcopy book into an ibook?

Is there a way to convert my purchased hardcopy of a book into an iBook? I have many books I purchased long before over the years and don't see the need to repurchase them as I already own them. So is there a way to convert or get access to the iBook edition of the books I own? If not that would be an awesome feature.

Electronic books are published as distinct editions.  Just as you don't get free credit for the paper back edition if you bought the hard cover edition, you don't get free credit for the ebook edition just because you bought a printed edition at some point.  You've also never gotten free credit for updated editions of printed books either, just because you bought a previous edition.
I honestly see no logic in why one should get ebooks of previously purchased books for free - books have never been published that way and it makes no sense to me.
As far as scanning your books and converting them to say, PDF or epub for your own personal use, that would depend on the "fair use" aspect of each countries copyright laws.  Many countries do seem to readily allow such individual copying for personal use, but given how varied copyright law is around the world, it's impossible to make a blanket statement about that sort of thing.
There are several companies that offer bulk scanning and OCR conversion to an ebook format for people willing to pay to have their private libraries converted to electronic books e.g. Blueleaf in Missouri for one I know of).
