Editing old site created in Dreamweaver

I have to edit my website (created by someone else in Dreamweaver for me about five years ago). The only thing I really need to change is the "last modified on ..." date - so a very simple edit.
I have all the files but can't remember how to edit them. I tried to open the "index" html file in Dreamweaver but it's not letting me make any edits in the code panel. Is that not the file that I need to edit?

Hi Kate,
sorry, didn't see before, that you already solved your editng problem. Here a hint in the ftp-direction and only to show you another way to all these really good and correct advices, I'll try to give my recommendation:
For various reasons I prefer to upload my files and sometimes for the opposite way, for a necessary download from my server, with a program which works "outside" of the DW. Therefore I am using filezilla with great success and it looks for me easier to keep track of all operations precisely and generate or reflect easily the desired tree structure.
Here is the link to get it and where you can read informations about how it works:

    iWeb stores its files in a "domain" file. The file is located in your user Library -> Application Support -> iWeb Folder.
    Unless it has been moved or deleted, it should still be there. Double click it and see if it launches with your data.
    If it's been moved somewhere, you'd need to find it.
    However, if the domain file you were using has been deleted and not backed up somewhere, you would need to start from scratch.
    Good luck!

  • PHP MySQL sites created by dreamweaver mx 2004 crash on safari

    Hello,
    The title says it all, but i will elaborate.
    I develop PHP, MySQl driven database websites, I use
    Dreamweaver MX 2004 and I work on a macintosh, using both safari
    version 2 and 3.
    i have noticed that whenever I post a database item (add,
    edit to table) my safari hangs and I get a page cannot be displayed
    error after 1 minute or so, even though the db function went
    through.
    Now, this only happens with safari and it only happens with
    pages I build with dreamweaver, any hand coded websites I build do
    not do this.
    i have posted this on the apple website with no response, I
    am hoping someone here can help me.

  • Does anyone know how I can edit a site created by another user on my imac?

    Hi,
    We are a family new to our imac. One of us created a site with iweb. Now I want to get to the site and edit it? I don't see the site when I start iweb...Can someone provide an answer and any recommendations on how to set up multiple sites so that we can share editing privileges?
    Thanks!
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    elegantKB,
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions area, and congratulations on your new iMac!
    Here's what you need to know about creating/sharing websites with the iWeb application; iWeb stores everything you create with the app in a single file, called Domain.sites. It lives on the hard drive of the computer that created it here. If you duplicate/copy this file and move it to another Mac using the same version of iWeb, that machine will open it and you will be able to edit the site. If you configure the second machine to publish to the same .Mac account (assuming you are using .Mac), you can not only edit the site, but you can also publish the same from two separate machines.
    You will need to keep track of the latest version of this Domain file if you share it.
    Be careful with this file and back it up often. It contains every single page and/or Site that you create with iWeb.
    See these notes for more details on how to edit and publish the same iWeb site from two separate machines.

  • Edit Sub Menu Created With Dreamweaver

    Does anyone know how to edit a sub menu that was created
    using Dreamweaver? I need to link a new page to the sub menu but I
    can't seem to find anyway to unlock the menu to amend the link.
    Alternatively, one of my pages appears to be stuck on the server
    saying that it is being edited by Macromedia Contribute after I
    tried to publish it (this is the page I've re-created but can't
    create a link to) so does anyone know how I'd re-set it or
    something? I had thought of uninstalling Contribute then
    re-installing it but I don't know if it'd make much difference?

    Open the template for this page (Select Modify > Templates > Open Attached Template) and add these comments into the <head>...</head> section:
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>Eddie and Alice Smith</title>
    <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="head" -->
    <!-- TemplateEndEditable -->
    <link href="css/main_css.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    <script src="SpryAssets/SpryMenuBar.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <link href="SpryAssets/SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /></head>
    You have probably deleted these comments when creating the template. These lines allow Dreamweaver to add code into the <head> section. Save your template and say Yes to allow the changes to pages that use this template (or just to the pages you want).

  • Site created in Dreamweaver is stuck on Flash upgrade

    RE: www.garyhendrycustomhomes.com
    This site was created in Dreamweaver CC. Every functioning aspect of this site works perfectly and acts normal when previewed offline in a browser.
    However, when I complete an upload of the entire site and bring the url up in my browser, I get a white page with this message:
    Please upgrade your Flash Player.
    Already have Flash Player? Click here if you have Flash Player 6 installed.
    I am on a Mac running OS 10.9.1.
    Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks

    I'm not seeing it.  Only your Gallery page appears to be using Flash.  Do you have the latest Flash player installed on your system?
    FYI, Flash is pretty much dead these days since the world's most popular mobile & tablet devices can't support it.  To reach a wider audience, you should replace your Flash slideshows with jQuery.  Cycle2 is a very nice plugin.  http://jquery.malsup.com/cycle2/

  • Editing a site created with Iweb - with another program

    Hello,
    I built a website for a friend and he wants to be able to make small changes on it from time to time and I downloaded a WYSIWYG editor and none of them are compatible with sites created with Iweb...
    Does anyone have any suggestions? He runs a windows machine.
    Thank you so much!!!

    Well, not really. A lot of people have their sites built for them and then, with a little guidance, can change out photos, or do a little editing here and there. So your idea certainly has merit.
    The problem is, iWeb is a unique html generator. It stores everything you create in the application in a single file, (Domain.sites2), and only the application itself can open this file for editing. iWeb doesn't even create the html until you publish the site, either to a folder or to an Apple server. iWeb also changes many things into .png files--including text--believe it or not, in a well intentioned effort to cross platform better with other browser applications. So even simple text editors, which would normally be fine for changing small things in most websites, will struggle.
    Your idea was a good one; it is iWeb that isn't a good candidate for it.
    You must therefore now convince this person to become an Apnewbie, and buy a Mac!

  • Using Contribute CS5 to edit site created w/Dreamweaver - PayPal button size issues

    I'm using Adobe Contribute CS5 to edit my web site that was built with Dreamweaver on a Mac.  I have a PC with Windows XP, 1G of ram, a 40G hard drive (used only for programs and operating system) a 1 terabyte external hard drive for all files, etc.  I use MSN Explorer for my browser.
    I have done extensive editing and everything works fine except for when I edit or add PayPal buttons.  The site was built using "tables" for most everything as well as all of my price lists.  When I add a button or edit button properties, that row of cells doubles in height, in the "editing window" they look okay but when I publish the page they take on the doubled height.
    I contacted Contribute tech support and they say Contribute is working properly and the problem is with how the button code was written in Dreamweaver.  The tech said even though the button looks like it is the proper size, the code tells it to take up more space thus giving me the cell height problem.  My standard price lists do not have any lines defining rows and columns but on one page I have been experimenting with I have given the table a line value of 1 to enable me to see what is going on, you can view this page at; http://www.hopscrimshaw.com/birds/owls1.htm
    My Webmaster and I parted ways a few years ago so seeking help there is not an option, she won't return phone calls, reply to e-mails, etc.
    Any help solving this problem would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,   PapaHop

    I am also having this problem and any answer would be greatly appreciated. The code <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0;"> </p> gets added whenever text edits are made. This seems to create spaces on the page which pushes content out of alignment. The code gets put into the navigation, the text and anything above the text being edited, jpeg sliders, images, etc.

  • How do i edit a site created with iweb

    I created a site last year with iweb, but now when I try to open it, it only lets me create a new site.  I can see the thumbnail in my finder view, but cannot edit it. Help.
    Thanks in advance

    Try this:
    To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
    do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
    You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
    Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
    WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • How to upload site created with Dreamweaver via FTP to the iWEB server?

    Hi everyone,
    I recently created a site on Dreamweaver and want to upload the site, via FTP to the iWEB server. My questions are the following:
    1. What is the FTP host address?
    2. How do I connect to my website via FTP?
    Any help on the following questions will be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hello Lauretta and welcome to the forum.
    You do not connect to iDisk via FTP. iDisk uses WebDAV. Also you do not need to manually upload the published files to iDisk as recommended buy others in this thread. Once the site and server is set up in DW you can publish and upload directly through DW.app Check out this post for more info.

  • Meta tag error in site created by dreamweaver

    I recently checked my site www.bestical.com at The W3C Markup Validation Service and there are error in it
    but  added all the meta tags by standard Dreamweaver tools
    so which one is wring?

    Short answer:  You're using an HTML5 doc type which has a different set of specs for valid meta tags and other HTML syntax.
    Introduction to HTML
    Where you have this:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="fa">
    Language must be expressed in the <html> tag like this:
    <!doctype html>
    <html lang="fa">
    <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    For more on HTML5 specifications, see the W3Schools site above.

  • Editing old site on new computer

    I created a website on my G4 with iWeb 1.1.2. Have been trying to copy the site to my new macbook with iWeb 2.0.4, following instructions on other posts. The domain file is in the proper place, but when I open it iWeb opens up with its generic startup, not the established site. I've tried trashing prefs and repairing permissions, and restarting multiple times. Nothing. However, there were 2 domain files, the one of my site and one that was already there the first time I went to the location in library>application support>iweb - I assume that's a generic domain to get you started. When I trashed that other domain file, that fixed the problem. Just thought that might help someone else in the same situation

    The short answer is that you don't and you can't.  You have actually saved the wrong files, because iWeb has no import facility, so is unable to open html files at all.
    The files that will have been saved and which you need to transfer are the domain.sites files and these can be found under your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites.  Ensure that you do look in your User/Library and NOT your System Library, because iWeb is not there.
    Find your domain.sites files and transfer these to your new Mac and then double click on the files to open them.
    Have a look at other discussions for instructions on how to make your User Library file visible in both Lion and Mountain Lion.

  • Editing pages created using dreamweaver with microsoft's visual studio express

    Here's a quick, somewhat vague, question for anyone who might have an answer. Is there a trick to editing pages created using dreamweaver with Microsoft Visual Studio Express? The reason I ask is I recently finished a web site for my first client who now wants to make edits herself using the program she uses, that being Microsoft. I thought it would be as easy as pulling the html files from the server (or the usb flash drive i gave her), making changes and then putting them back to the server, but apparently she is having some problems. I'm meeting with her soon. I have no experience with any other programs, other than Adobe, so I don't know how much good I'll be in helping her. Maybe it's an easy question, maybe not. Any info appreciated. Thanks!

    David wrote -
    Dreamweaver template commands are all wrapped in HTML comments, so they
    shouldn't cause any problems. They should simply be treated as comments.
    However, the concept of editable and locked regions will be ignored.
    Hi David, I meant the templates with the dwt extension, not the html files that are created from them. The full version of VS will recognize the dwt extension as 'Dynamic Web Template' but as this is a microsoft extension it does not recognize the code for editing and shows a large number of errors, (before anyone comments the dwt file extension is used by a number of other programs, all referring to a different file type).

  • How to open and edit my sites (made on my old computer) on my new Macbook?

    Hi, I have bought a Macbook and I would like to edit my Sites which
    I have done so far on my iMac G5. How should I do this?
    And if I edit them later on my laptop will they automatically save on iMacG5?

    this is very easy. you need to get the following file from your old computer:
    /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites
    you need to copy the domain file!, copy it to the same folder on your new computer (if the folder is not there then open iweb once, do something, save and close). replace the existing file on the macbook with your G5 domain file.
    now open iweb up and your website is there! see here for a better description:

    have fun editing!
