Editing PDFs in Preview

I'm pretty sure that Preview doesn't enable one to actually edit a PDF, but I did fill out a PDF form using Preview.  I'm able to see those changes in Preview when I open it, but not in any other PDF reader I've tried.  Is there any way to see those changes in another PDF reader?

Try printing the form and choosing Save as PDF in the print dialog.

I stopped using preview. Adobe Acrobat Pro is running fine ... this is not a solution to the problem though. The question remains open: why is preview not running as before?

  • About preview edits PDF problem? Please help!

When I fill some forms and do the checks on PDF file using preview, it shows like this.
Anyone knows why? it doesn't like check or X? or if anyone knows any good PDF editor? Please help!

Your Preview is putting both a checkmark and an X into the checkbox. My Preview only puts a checkmark. I can't see where you can specify either one or the other (X or checkmark) in Preview on my Yosemite 10.10.1 with Preview version 8.0. Did you do something to enable "X" rather than checkmark?
What version of OS X and Preview are you using?
I use an app called PDFpenPro to do this sort of thing with usually (fill out forms and editing PDF files) and it also only puts checkmarks into the checkboxes.

  • How to remove or edit PDF highlights in PREVIEW

    Hello;
when viewing PDF in Preview, you can add some marks and make annotations; but after highlighting or underlining some text, I cannot change or remove highlights anymore. Is this a bug, or is there anything special I should do?
    Macunaima

It's a ridiculous piece of interface nonsense, but the way to remove the highlights is to open the sidebar, select Annotations from the pop-up menu at the bottom of the sidebar to get the list of annotations (and highlights) in the document.
Select the annotation/highlight in the sidebar (it'll have the page number next to it, and selecting it sends you to that page, too) and you'll find that the annotation itself, or in this case the highlight, is selected, and pressing Delete gets rid of it.

If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.

  • HT2506 How do I email a pdf in Preview (iOS 6)?  I could do this in previous versions.

How do I email a pdf in Preview (ios 6)?  I could do this in previous verions of Preview

Do you see the icon with the arrow in the toolbar in Preview? If so, click that and you should get an email option.
If you don't see that icon, right-click on the Toolbar, select Customize, and drag the icon into the toolbar.
If that doesn't help, or clicking "email" doesn't work, you might want to ask for further assistance in the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion forum.
    Regards.

  • Editing pdf documents

Hi - I thought I could download Adobe, well I DID, but when it finished downloading it told me then that it wasn't compatible with Mac
How or what do I do to edit a pdf document - or maybe I can't at all can I? Ta

Sounds like you downloaded a version of Adobe for mac that wasn't the version for Lion.
However, neither Preview (the pdf reader included in Lion) nor the free version of Adobe Reader will allow you to edit the actual content of a pdf. You can overlay new text boxes to obscure the original date/venue with Preview but it will look pretty tacky!
You need to get Adobe Acrobat for that
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/edit-pdf-files.html
It's a paid for app, but you should be able to download and install a 30-day trial which might allow you to do this job before having to pay for it (note: I'm not sure if the trial is full-featured or not, you'll have to check that out on Adobe's page. Make sure you get the version that's compatible with Lion this time!).

  • Used to have printable annotations to PDFs in Preview

In Preview in 10.4 when you used Add Note to a PDF, your annotation was embedded into the file and would print, though you couldn't edit it again. Now in 10.5 it seems that the Notes only leave a little bubble icon but you can't get the note itself to print. Is there a way to add printable Notes to a PDF using Preview now, or is that [very useful] feature now disabled in favor of notes that remain editable but will never print?

Well, I'm using Preview Version 4.2 (469.5), what version does yours show?
    5.0.1. I guess I wasn't paying attention. This is the 10.5 forum, isn't it.
This appears to be fixed in 10.6. I tried it in a couple of other PDF tools and I can't get anything other than Preview in 10.6 to print the notes. Sorry.

  • Saving changes to PDFs in Preview

So I make annotations to and highlight PDFs using Preview, and it works to my liking. The only issue that I've been encountering is that when I save, it always asks that I save as, instead of just save. Is there a way that I can circumvent this?

I have this same situation. Some PDFs allow me to save with edits; some do not at all -- if I do command+S, the 'save as' comes up and there is no way to keep edits. Someone posted people should get the trial version of Adobe Acrobat Pro to get around this, but when I checked Adobe, the trial version is ONLY avail for Windows. So, no use there. It's so annoying.

  • Inserting text into PDFs in Preview.

When editing a PDF in preview, I create a text box where I want to put text but i can only have one font or, more importantly, one font style (bold, italics etc) within that text box. How can i make just several words italics??

Apparently, the only way I have found to mix font styles in Preview is to create two text boxes and manually align them for appearance. You can change font color from the Preview edit sub-toolbar or the font dialog box.

  • Using Oracle "Import PDF" Extension in Open Office Draw to Edit pdf Files

I am a fairly new Mac user with OS X 10.6. For several months, I have been trying to find something which would edit pdf files better than Preview does (for example, the content of a text box in Preview can only be "center aligned"). Skim and FormulatePro were two options I tried that were improvements over Preview in many respects, but wouldn't let me paste an image onto my pdf (such as, for example, if I wanted to put my digital signature on a document).
Then, I "discovered" the Oracle PDF Import Extension which I had installed in Open Office months ago, but hadn't really used. By "discovered," I mean I read on somebody's blog that you could use Open Office Draw to edit pdf files and I thought, "Hey, I wonder if that would work with my setup." (Boy, do I feel stupid.)
I have just started using this functionality, but in just an hour or so of playing around, I have found that it has far exceeded my expectations and, even, my immediate needs. Besides giving you (a) all the control over text and text boxes that you would expect from, say, a word processing program and (b) allowing you to paste images onto your pdf, Open Office Draw also includes layers!
The layer function threw me off for a bit, because, at first, I kept finding that my attempts to edit the document resulted in grabbing the raster image and moving it "off" of the underlying text layer (a function, I will admit, that I think will be worth exploiting someday, but wasn't what I was looking for at the moment). Then, I discovered that you can "lock" the layer so as to prevent this annoying occurrence. To create your edits, simply create a new layer (call it "MyEdits" or whatever you want) and you're in business.
Anybody who has done anything more than drawn a couple of lines and boxes on a page has discovered that editing the overlapping objects can be a real pain - if not an outright impossibility. Separating these overlapping objects through the use of different layers solves the problem.
The only downside to the use of Open Office Draw as a pdf editing tool that I can see is that you must import the pdf, save your edits in odg format, and then export it to pdf when you're done. I know that we would all like to have the capability of doing everything I just described directly to the native document, but, hey, for all the functionality I have been searching the internet for weeks to find, I think it's a reasonable trade off.

    Try turning off protected mode.

  • Can't save an edited PDF to the same folder it originated from

Can't save an edited PDF to the same folder it originated from. Error "cannot save the document is read-only or is open by someone else" and then it prompts to save the document to another folder or change the name of the document.  This is not what I want to do! Using WIndows 7

    Hi JC_AUS,
Thank You for posting on the forums. This can happen if the preview of the document is opened in preview pane in Windows Explorer.
Kindly switch off the preview pane and then try the same.

  • PDF in Preview does not reflect in iBook

I am using Preview 7.0 to open and edit PDF. Typically, I use highlight, underline, add notes etc, all within the Preview app in Mac Pro 15 Retina OS 10.9.4.
I am also using iBook 1.0.1, when I add the "edited" PDF to iBook (and later sync via iTune to my iPad), and open in directly inside iBook (on my Mac or on my iPad), all the "edited" portion did not show.
Is this the intended outcome where iBook does not accept all the changes I made to the PDF? Or I did not do the right thing?

There is no mail option under the share icon - does it only show up if I change Mail Prefernces to show Mail as the default - seems very silly...
Why would I need to re-start my MAC - I havent changed anything yet?

  • Can't read notes on PDF in preview

I can't believe I am having problems with Preview - but I am. I have inserted sticky notes on a PDF within preview and now when I re-open the PDF, I am unable to expand the note to read what was written? I've tried right clicking, opening up the side panel what am I missing!? I'm ready for any "duh" moment you can offer.
    Thanks!

Preview used to be able to add links to PDFs but it was one of the features silently taken away
To edit a PDF either try Illustrator if you have it, or  PDFPen Pro (I think they have a full featured demo). If you're ok with an online editor, I've used http://www.pdfescape.com/ quite a few times and it works a treat for a lot of things like adding links.
