Editing Photos for items (calendars, books, etc.)

When making a calendar (or book) if I want to crop a picture, does cropping (or other edits) to the picture while I'm in the calendar also alter the master picture in the iPhoto library? It seems to me that it does.
Is there anyway, short of making a duplicate, to make crops and other edits that are calendar-only specific, so the main photo remains untouched?

Robert
You're not using iPhoto to it's best effect, or grasping some of the key concepts.
I generally drag a copy to the desktop and edit my photos in Photoshop and then save it with an 'adj' at the end of the name (like IMG1229_adj.jpg). Then I will import that into iPhoto. . This way I have both the original and a cleaned up copy of the photo.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
So, dragging to the desktop is unnecesary. Also, iPhoto performs all actions on a copy of the file, your original photo is always preserved. So if you send a pic to to Photoshop (or edit it in iPhoto or any other app) it's a copy of the file that is sent. Try it and see. Then look in the Photos menu and note the 'Revert to Original' option.
If I edit in iPhoto, I personally make a duplicate and work with that. I never mess with the original.
Unnecessary as detailed above.
I am also a bit paranoid, because I also keep another copy of the original outside iPhoto in the Pictures folder
This is just wasting disk space. Why? For a back up to be a back up it must be on another disk. What on earth does this protect you from? If the disk crashes you've lost both copies.
and then burn a copy to CD/DVD when appropriate.
Wise, or copy to an external HD.
Of course if the house burns to the ground all that does me no good, since all copies are in the same house!
Well trick number one might help: keep a copy in another house - I have one in a relative's house across town
Or trick number two: Upload them to a site like Flickr - for a ridiculously inexpensive $20 or so you have unlimited space on their server. And you don't have to share them, you can mark them all as private.

  • Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks

  • How do you edit photos for extravert 2

how do you edit photos for extravert 2? I had extravert 1 and it had edit icon.

        fairiemonkey,
Sorry to see you've had trouble editing your photos! Each phone has there own unique features. The original Extravert had photo edit features including drawing and changing contrast, sharpness, blur and brightness. The Extravert 2 does not have those same features. You can still change things such as camera options for white balance and resolution but do not have those same photo editing options available.
You can transfer pictures to a desktop computer and then use photo editing software on your computer for more advanced photo editing. Here are instruction on how to tranfer the pictures: http://vz.to/1z1nB6H . Just scroll down to where it says, From the Device to the Computer.

  • "Edit photo" link in iPhoto Book Project does not work

    Hi,
I am putting together an Book project in iPhoto.  On a few pictures, I would like to edit them to make minor adjustments.
When I right click on the picture in iPhoto Book Project, there is an option to "Edit Photo".
When I click on the "Edit Photo" link, the screen switches to the iPhoto Edit page  but the picture does not load for editing - it's just a black screen.
I can always edit the photo before placing it in the Book, but in a large Book it is more convenient to select the picture on the Book page rather than going back and look for it in iPhoto.
Anyone has experienced/fixed this?  Is this a bug?  I have version 9.2.3
    Thanks
    Armen

Are you able to go to the photo in its Event and edit it there? Apply the fix below:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #1 to repair permissions and #4 to rebuild the database.

  • Adjusting Photos for Making a book

I was in the process of making a book in Aperture, which I am new to, and for some reason I was no longer able to adjust any of my photos whether making a book or not. All my photos in the lower right corner have a small square with a red slash through it and an arrow which I cannot find out what that is. Did I inadvertently do something to block any adjustments on all my photos? Help!

  • FCP Sequence compression / format for editing photos for a HD Plasma screen

    Hello Forum
I'm editing a 10 minute documentary that's mostly based on graphics and photographs, and a voiceover. There's maybe 30 seconds of HD Video in it (Sony EX1 Camera). (But I assume the video will be convertable into any format anyway.)
The final film will be screened on an 1920x1080 HD Screen.
What sequence preset should I use? I don't see any 1920x1080 in my final cut pro 5.2.
I'm somewhat new to the world of HD. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Cheers,
    sk

Thank you for all your replies.
You guys are right. Sorry it's 5.1.4...
Let's assume there's no video involved. What would be a good format workflow for a 10 minute film containing audio, graphics and photos only (72dpi jpgs and tiff files)?
I will receive low res / temp photos for a rough cut. And then high res photos for the final cut.
I would like to edit offline with a timeline setting that allows me to pan and zoom in/out of photos without much rendering, a fast compression. And then once the cut is approved another setting that allows me to uprez to a higher compression with little effort.
My setup: Mac Pro (2009) with 3 gigs of RAM (thinking of upgrading to 6) and 512 megs graphics card.
    Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thank you

  • Black and white photos for an iPhoto Book

I've scanned many old black and white photos into iPhoto and would like to create books with them, but I read that iPhoto will not work with black and white photos for books, only color photos. Is that true and are there any suggestions for how to create a book using them? Thanks.

There is a bug affecting PPC Macs with iPhoto 6.0.5 and QuickTime 7.1.3 that causes it to crash with photos that have no color profile attatched. In addition, iPhoto 6 does not work well with Grayscale. So check these scans to see if they have no color profile or if the profile is grayscale. If so, you'll need to convert them to sRGB. They'll still be black & white, but they'll have a color profile that iPhoto 6 will accept.
Old Toad created an Automator application to embed the sRGB profile into your photos. Go to his Toad's Cellar and download the "Embed wRGB Color Profile 2" App. In Finder go in your Originals folder, then drop a roll folder containing these photos onto the app.
    http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=toad.hall&tem platefn=FileSharing7.html&xmlfn=TKDocument.7.xml&sitefn=RootSite.xml&aff=consume r&cty=US&lang=en#
Before doing anything, you might want to try inserting some of those scans into a book template and see what happens. To see how a book will print when you order it from Apple, choose Print when you are viewing the book. Allow it to assemble the file. In the Print Dialog box, click the PDF button and select Save PDF from the drop-down menu. Minimize the iPhoto window to find a little box asking you to select a location for the saved PDF. [If you don't go looking for this window you'll be stuck waiting indefinitely.] View the PDF and see how those black & white scans look.

  • Different source for the photos for the calendar

    Hi
One of those year end panic moments at the office..
Trying to import photos into a new Calendar that I need to take to press tomorrow..
I can not figure out how to change the source of the iPhoto to import photos to the Calendar, example I brought in some new photos. they are in the Last Import, How do I get those in to the calendar?
    I so appreciate any help..

    Stan,
If I understand your question correctly, it is not possible to transfer photos from iPhoto to iCal.
There is a "Calendar" button on the bottom of the iPhoto window, but that only provides an avenue for you to purchase an Apple calendar which you have designed using your own photos.
If that is indeed what you are trying to accomplish...
    1. Click on "Last Import."
    2. Select (Click) on the photos you desire to import.
    3. Drag them to the Projects>CalendarName Folder which you are creating.

  • HT204364 how do i just order prints?  i see options for ordering cards, books, etc. on my computer but not just prints

HOw do I order prints?  I see options for cards, books, calendars and slideshows on my computer but not prints?

What version of iPhoto are you using?  For iPhoto 9 click on the Share button at the bottom right of the iPhoto window and select Order Prints from the options presented:
Note:  I recommend that you crop the photos to the print size you want before ordering so that you can determine what part of the  photos gets cropped out rather than let the photofinisher's software do the cropping.

  • Editing Photos for YouTube HD Widescreen Final Outcome

    Hello,
I am trying to put a photo in my movie. I'm wondering if someone can help me create a standard procedure for editing my photos to fit in my most common preset.
    I make videos for YouTube.
I am shootinh the video in full HD with 1920 x 1080 with a Canon HF20.  I then choose the preset AVCHD 1080p30.
At first the photo was super blown up and zoomed in, then I selected something that made it fit the screen.  But now it's not wide enough.
    Current Image Properties
    Thanks,
    Robby

I found Motion and then Scale under Show Clip Keyframes.
    I checked "Scale"
It then made the photo appear in the left windown  but it didn't change anything in the right window.  (sorry I forgot the exact names, I think the left window is the preview pane and I forgot the right)
Even if this works and makes the photo look good in the video, I'm still curious to know if there is a way to optimize the pixes of a photo based on the preset I choose and my desired encoding at the end.
    Thanks,
    Robby

  • For Google Calendar/Contacts, etc. - CalDav or Google Sync?

Not over the air - not until firmware update 4.0 is released which will include the ability to access more than one Exchange account.

  • How do I batch edit potos for contrast, sharpness, etc or permanently change the settings?

How do I batch edit photos for contrast, sharpness, etc or permanently change those settings?

There a 3rd party application, iPhoto Batch Enhancer, that can batch enhance, change contrast or crop. That's all.
However, once you establish the adjustments to one photo you can copy it via the Edit menu:
and then move to the next photo with the forward arrow and paste those adjustments in the next photo.
