Editing photos to music

I'm a bit of a newcomer and have toyed with iPhoto slideshows & just getting started with iDVD. What I would like to do, is lay down a soundtrack FIRST, consisting of several tunes, then synchronize the photos to the music with various lengths of dissolve rates, time per slide, cut-to's and overlay titles or comments. The automated 'fit to song' feature is fun for small quick projects, but would like to produce something a bit more customized and burn DVD's for the friends in my club. From viewing the forum and studying the tutorials, it appears that one is limited to the chapter approach and I would like to make one, long, fluid program- maybe interspersing some vid. clips within the photos. Should I be looking at an additional software program? Thanks

You're describing apple's Final Cut Studio 2 / pro apps and not a consumer app which is what the i-Apps are. However some people often use them in lieu of apple's pro apps. Not always a good idea for precision video and audio editing.
Suggestion only: Anytime you want to edit to the beat of a tune or your favorite music for any considerable length of time, then I'd recommend using a beefier app like FCP => DVDSP (part of FCS2) and not necessarily i-apps. that or use an alternate app for audio. Garage band will help in this situation. But more than that ....
The thing to avoid within the i-apps or rather within w/in QT ref. movies is that the video and audio will drift apart when compressed and burned to a dvd-r (not always but just enough at times to be rather annoying usually toward the end of a lengthily idvd presentation or if you use anything other than 16 bit audio. And by lengthily I mean anything in excess of 15 to 20 mins. when referring to syncing your music to a video track.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

I am going to buy myself a MacBook Pro in the near future and was wondering if the new Retina Display model would be worth the extra cash. I will mostly be doing photo/video/music editing.

if you're not in a big rush - why not hold off until Adobe and Microsoft releases an update to support the Retina Screen.
Don't get me wrong - the Macbook Retina is a good and videos look great - but when it comes to Photoshop, it's a little blurry and the fonts in Excel and Word is pretty blurry too.....I own one....
In any event, if it's something you can live with - then by all means - go for it.....
Otherwise - get the non Retina Macbook Pro - it's cheaper, and it's user upgradeable in both RAM and Hard Drive.
    Good luck.

  • Importing Photos and Music from Multiple users on the same Mac

I am the same person with multiple users on one iMac. I need to have the same pics and music files on all of the user names on the one computer.
I have the family pack MobileMe plan.
Where are the files located for the photos and music in iTunes?
I would like to import them from one user to another user on the same computer.
    Thank you

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
If you Import the files from one User to another then you will use double the disk space on your HD as you will have multiple copies of everything. Why not simply share the files between accounts?
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • So many problems... My MacBook Pro is full and I'm terrified I'm going to lose all of my photos and music.

Where to even begin with the problames I'm having!?  I have a MacBook Pro  OS X 10.5.8, an iMac OS X 10.5.8, a 500GB Time Capsule, and an iPhone 4s. I know just enough about all of them to basically get myself into trouble... And It seems I have done a really good job at messing everything up!
I bought the iMac and Time capsule together in 2008.  The Time Capsule didn't work properly for backups from the start (although it functions great as a router for my home network), and I spent several hours on the phone with applecare, took it to the Genius Bar etc., and it still has not ever worked as a continuous background backup.  I did somehow manage to acquire one backup of the iMac with the TC before I did a reboot of the iMac a couple years ago.  I can access the backup, but im not sure if the backup is actually on the time capsule or if it is saved on the HD.  Furthermore, I have another backup (pretty sure it's a partial backup) from the MacBook Pro, and I don't know where that one is actually stored either. The Macbook Pro is so full that it is not functioning properly and i'm afraid it will die.  I have subscribed to both Backblaze and Crashplan... The initial Backblaze backup completed on the MacBook, but I don't even have enough diskspace to download Crashplan.  I need to get both Macs backed up to an external hard drive  and I would like to save the backups I already have.  I am also trying to start my own photograghy business, so I would like everything setup so that I can manage photos from both Macs and be condusive for storing and editing loads of photos. So here are my questions...
    1. Can I (and should I) back up both Macs to one external hard drive?
    2. Can I use the Time Capsule to route wireless continuous backups from the MacBook Pro to the external hard drive or would I need to have it wired every time?
    3. Which external hard drive would be best for my situation?  Would a RAID be best or is that overkill?
I am considering this one in either a 2TB or 3TB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
    4. Once everything is safely backed up, what is the best way to get my HD space freed up?
    5. How do I set up the drives so that I'm not using all of my internal HD space for photos and music?
    6. When I have enough space to upgrade to OS X Lion, will the cloud make a difference with how my photos are managed?
I know this has been extensive, and probably frustrating to those of you who know what your'e doing... Thanks so much for your time and patience!!

    1. Can I (and should I) back up both Macs to one external hard drive?
You can (if it's large enough), but see below.  You should probably create a second partition on the drive for the second Mac. You can also back them both up to the TC.
    2. Can I use the Time Capsule to route wireless continuous backups from the MacBook Pro to the external hard drive or would I need to have it wired every time?
    There are several options:
Since you have an iMac, by far the fastest, easiest, and most reliable way to back it up is to connect an external HD directly to it.
It's slower, but you can also back it up to the TC.
The laptop can be backed-up to the same drive as the one connected to the iMac, over your network.
Finally, although I wouldn't recommend it in this case, you could back up either or both to an external HD connected to the TC.
    3. Which external hard drive would be best for my situation?
Most likely, a good quality external HD. If you're going to use Time Machine, see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #1 to be sure you get one large enough.
Would a RAID be best or is that overkill?
In most cases, overkill.  For redundancy, duplicate backups made on a separate HD, with a different app, is a bit safer than a RAID.  See FAQ #27 for some suggestions.
I am considering this one in either a 2TB or 3TB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
That link doesn't work for me -- it redirects to the main page.  I have one of their Mercury Elite Pro multi-interface drives, and it works fine.  Most anything they sell will be fine, as long as it's large enough.
    4. Once everything is safely backed up, what is the best way to get my HD space freed up?
Even before you do that, check for hidden large stuff on your Mac that you don't need.  See Where did my Disk Space go?  There may be some things there that will gain you a few GBs, at least.
Also, obviously, delete anything you don't need, especially video, photos, music.
Do you have duplicates of the same files on both Macs?  If so, deleting one might save a lot of space.
Then, you need to consider where you're going in the future.  Backups alone won't gain you any space -- the essential part of a good backup strategy is to have (at least) two copies of everything important in (at least) two different places.
So most likely, you need to move some big stuff, such as your iPhoto and/or iTunes libraries, or a large video collection, onto a different external HD, and let Time Machine (and/or other backup app) back it up along with your Macs.
    5. How do I set up the drives so that I'm not using all of my internal HD space for photos and music?
Be sure to format them for a Mac (most come pre-formatted for Windoze).  See #1 in Using Disk Utility.
Depending on what kind of data you want to move, you can just drag and drop, then delete.
    And/or see:

    Moving your iPhoto '11 Library
Moving iMovie '11 footage to another drive
    6. When I have enough space to upgrade to OS X Lion, will the cloud make a difference with how my photos are managed?
    I don't think so.
What's on your TC now?  Anything?   If not, you might want to erase it and start backing up immediately, so you have at least some protection until you get the external HD(s).   See To erase everything on the TC's internal disk in #Q5 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
Then see #Q1 there for setup instructions.  If there's a problem, post back with details, or check Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Also don't hesitate to post back if this isn't clear, or you still have questions.

  • Cant edit photos from PC

    Oops, there it is.

this modular 747 has hijacked 3 of my posts today, this one, one regarding my wish for landscape photo and video to be enabled as default so you dont have to hold phone sideways and a previous one similar saying that when I edit photos on my Iphone that the changes do not transfer to the PC.
Its like because this one indivual does not share any of these problems they do not apply.
I have supported apple products from the start with exception of the PC which was for years the format to use in the business world.  Apple has always been my music, phone and now even apple tv device.
Confuses me why one person would take my posts so personal.
Please go elsewhere if you do not like my posts, or post if you dont like, just stop with the hijacking.

  • Editing photos in one track without altering video in another?

Using Premier Elements 11, and working with an uploaded video with music. I am superimposing photos/videos on top of it. When I edit or move around the photos in the higher tracks, it messes up the audio by inserting breaks/cuts. I want the audio/video to run continuously in the background. Is there a way to lock the video so it can't be edited, while I move around the clips in the tracks above it?
And, a related question: I've placed a photo where I want it in relation to the video track. Is there a way to lock it in at that point in the video so that when I edit photos on the same track before that one, it doesn't shift everything down?
I've read on this forum that one can use the Ctrl key, but that trick doesn't seem to keep things from shifting around on the timeline in this case. Specifically, if I shorten the length of a clip, it slides everything after it to the left, whether or not I hold down the alt or ctrl key.

Yes, holding down the Ctrl key (or the Cmd key on a Mac) while you add photos or video clips will keep the track from rippling as you work.
Unfortunately, that won't keep your tracks from rippling  when you trim your photos.
That's the closest to being able to lock a track.

  • What is the best way to transfer only Photos and Music from imac to imac?

hello i have an old 24" imac that is loaded down with iphoto pictures and itunes music. i recently got the new 27" imac and wish to only transfer the photos and music files to the new computer. i have a cloned hard drive of my old imac as well as a time capsule copy of it.
i don't want to just restore my entire old hard drive onto my new imac because there is a lot of junk on there i don't want on there. so, what is the easiest way to move just these two types of files? i don't know how to find these files and move them?
i know how to attach both imacs via firewire, i just don't know what is the best way to make the transfer of both these file types?
    thank you!

copy the folders /users/username/music/itunes and /users/username/pictures/iphoto library to the corresponding locations on the new install.
note: itunes and iphoto should not be running when you do this.

  • Can I send Edited Photos and Video from Lightroom 5 to Premiere 11?

I am new to Lightroom 5 and love the product. Can I export edited Photos and Video from Lightroom to Premiere Elements 11? I need more flexibility than Lightroom offfers. I want to mix Photos then Videos with different music files and create a DVD.  Thank You...Rory...

Also, can I load the Lightroom itself onto an external hard drive and keep all my images off my laptop? If I edit them, do the edits remain on my laptop regardless of where the originals reside. I think that's the issue that I'm running into with Aperture:  edits stay on my laptop even though originals are on an external HD.
Your photos can be on any hard disk, internal or external or network. If they are stored on an external hard disk, then when you import them into Lightroom, you select the ADD option and the photo will remain on your external hard disk. The edits are stored in your Lightroom catalog (as opposed to "remain on my laptop"). Once you import photos into Lightroom, you no longer want to manage them (move, copy, delete) using your operating system. You do all photo management in Lightroom.
If you transfer the photos properly, your edits, cropping, metadata, etc. will transfer to Lightroom, but I will leave the details to some expert on Aperture.
If I could offer some advice, I don't think you want to just transfer SOME of your photos to Lightroom. In my opinion, you want ALL of your photos managed by Lightroom, and not some in application 1 and some in application 2. This makes your life much easier when trying to find your photos, you don't have to think "Is this photo in Lightroom or is this in Aperture?"  (Note: this doesn't mean you have to import all the photos from Aperture into Lightroom in one HUGE operation; you can certainly do the importing in manageable sized groups)

  • FAQ: How do I edit photos in Revel?

Start by installing Adobe Revel to your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android device. Tell family and friends who will be
viewing your Adobe Revel photos to install the apps, too.
When you're sharing photos with friends and family, you want them to look their best so that everyone gets to experience and enjoy the moment as much as you did. That’s why we built intuitive and powerful editing tools right into Revel. Make every moment look exactly how you want to remember it with ease.
    Editing Photos in Revel
You can edit a photo on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone using Adobe Revel. Changes are saved to your photo library, so
the photo looks the same on any device.  The Revel cloud keeps a copy of your full res originals. Edits in  revel are non-destructive, so your original is always preserved (unedited). When you export photo (MAC) Save to Camera Roll (iOS), that's when Revel applies your edits. On iOS the preview is used. on MAC the full resolution of the original is used to generate the new edited photo.
    Add adjustments to your photos
Go to the photo you wish to edit.
Click on the +- Edit button on the bottom center of the page on the iPad or the iPhone.
Select a preset adjustment look or adjust red eye, crop, or rotate.
With Revel’s intuitive and powerful editing tools, it’s lots of fun to make your photos look better. Crop and use one-touch filters to get professional results with ease, or use the adjustment sliders when you want to experiment with lighting, color, and sharpness.
Use the crop and red-eye removal tools help you create the perfect memory by eliminating unwanted parts of a photo. And when you have a special memory, use the advanced controls in Revel to give it a look all your own.
Edits you make to a photo appear when you view the photo on any device. Because Adobe Revel saves the edits as separate instructions rather than as changes to the original photo, you can always undo any edits you've made. For example, you can select a black-and-white look, and then if you change your mind, tap or click Undo. If you make a series of edits and then change your mind, tap or click Cancel.
To improve lighting or contrast, tap or click Adjustments. Drag the White Balance, Exposure, and Contrast sliders to achieve the effect you want. Tap or click the two-way  arrows (see image below) for additional sliders that give you finer control
Looks: Turn a photo into an amazing photo with a single tap. With  24 different photo filters it's easy to create a photo that will impress your friends and family.

the original image, just click "Undo"
iPhone Users:  There is  an "undo" button and "compare" button so you can see the before and after result for adding an adjustment to your image.
    Red Eye
Using Revels Red Eye removal is easy. Just click on the "Auto Detect & Correct" or click on the persons eyes in your image  as Revel will automatically correct the red eyes.
    Crop & Rotate
Crop: To remove unwanted areas of the photo, tap or click Crop & Rotate. Drag a corner or side of the frame to resize it. Drag the photo itself to reposition it. Pinch your fingers open to zoom in on the photo within the frame.

Copy to Clipboard: This will copy the image to your computers clipboard, then you can paste your image into various applications like Elements 11
Iphone Users: You can share your photos via e-mail or upload your images directly to Facebook, Flickr, Twitter & Tumblr.
    Actions Menu
Add Photo to Album: Add your photo to a new album or existing album in your library
Save Current to cameral roll: Exports the current version of the image that you have applied any adjustments to
Save Original to cameral roll: Exports the original image with out any adjustments applied.
Storing your original photos When you import a photo, Adobe Revel uploads a copy of the original to the cloud.
By default, Adobe Revel also stores a copy of the original on your computer in /Pictures/Adobe Revel Library
The files are stored in a "package" titled Adobe Revel Library. Control click on the package and select "Show Package Contents" from the menu. Then you will be able to view the images in the finder window.
    Favorites
When working with a single photo,  click on the "STAR" to mark your photo as a favorite. The image will show with a star under the "Favorites" in your Revel library.
    Add captions to your photos
Create lasting memories by preserving all the info and details related to each of your photos.
    Deleting photos
Be careful! Deleting a photo removes it from Revel on all your devices, not just the one you're working on. Make sure you really don't want the photo anymore before you delete it.
For example: If you delete the image on your phone or iPad, the image will also be deleted from the Adobe Revel Library in the /Pictures/Adobe Revel Library directory on your computer. Its always a good practice to back up your images to a location on your hard drive.

  • What happens to the original photo after editing?  Does it get replaced by the edited photo?

I just bought my first iPhone(5).  On Android, when editing a photo, the original stays in your gallery and the edited photo gets placed right next to it.  So what I want to know is, When editing a photo in the photo app, what happens to the original since it would be nice to be able to make different edits of it.

That is an excellent question. This is definitely not the programmed behavior of Photoshop Elements. Normally, when you edit a file, a new copy of the file is created (the original is simply left alone). This new copy of the file will have "_edited-1" added to the end of the name. It should definitely not be adding $ to the name at all.
Just as a test, create a new user account on your computer, and try editing another image to see if does the same thing there. However, I suspect there is another application on your computer that is modifying how files are saved, deleted, and renamed.

What have you tried so far?

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).

Please advise me how to burn these edited photos to a disc to take to the nearest printing store in a format that "windows" system can understand.
Thanks in advance.  I look forward to learning about this.

Select the pics in the viPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export them to a folder on the desktop. Burn that to disk with the Finder's burn command. Result. A disk with a folder of images that any machine can understand.
