Editing podcast audio in Garageband 10.0.2 - how do I crop/edit tracks?

Hello, I'm trying to crop/edit pre-recorded audio tracks in Garageband 10.0.2 and cannot find a way to do it! Help! I've found it to be very simple in other Apple software like iMovie, but can't work it out in Garageband. Advice is welcome.

Hey StephLWells,
Thanks for the question. You may find some helpful information in the GarageBand Help resource:

  • Single black frame in enhanced podcast rendered in GarageBand.

When a podcast created in Garageband is exported or shared with itunes, the resultant  .mov and .m4a are jpeg w/aac and will have occasional black frame at a chapter marker.
The chapters  are created by droping  images into the podcast track. These tiff images created from grab captures of screen shots. The audio is an mp3.
Anybody have any suggestions or ideas of cause?
    OS and iLife are uptodate.

Hi there, thanks for your advices. Unfortunately, none of them worked out.
The problem must be at some point where the screenpast part gets rendered out of Premiere. I recorded the screencast in Camtasia, rendered it out as an MP4 with H.264, imported the clip to Premiere, editetd everything together with other footage, and when exporting it out of Premiere (no matter what format), it all got messed up.
So I did the screencast again, the settings where the same and "suddenly" (well, after hours of swearing and rendering) the black frame was gone after the Premiere render. Still don't know what the actual problem was. Just hope it doesn't happen again because it's such a waste of time with all the rendering.

  • HT5225 what to do with podcasts created with GarageBand

With Apple doing away with hosting my podcasts created with GarageBand, will I be able to submit future podcasts that will appear in iTunes?

GarageBand wil make the actual recording of your podcast, together with chapter markers and images if you want an 'enhanced' audio podcast. It will not make the feed. It's designed to work directly with iWeb, which itself can post to any hosting service; but the file you save out of GarageBand can be used with any podcast creation program or service.
However you need to distinguish between the different types of image. The images that GarageBand adds to the file are visible when you subscribe to the feed in iTunes as they are actually embedded in the media file. The image which appears on the Store page, and the data such as categories, subtitles and so on, is all in the feed and GarageBand does not and never has provided these. If you work with iWeb you can add those details there to produce the feed, or other methods will provide places you can enter the data.
In your own interests, when you have a question please start a new thread rather than tacking on to an old one - this one is months old and indeed the OP's problem is not the same as yours. Questions about GarageBand itself are best asked in the GarageBand forum, and about podcasting in the Producing Podcast forum - you're in the iCloud forum and iCloud has nothing to do with this as it does not offfer website hosting.

  • How to I synchronize video from Imovie and audio from garageband?

I recorded the audio in Garageband and the video thru my video camera. I then captured the video in Imovie and attached the audio to the project from garageband. I can't seem to be able to synchronize both.I clicked on the green area and clicked "trim" and when the waveform appeared, I moved the handle back and forth, but video and audio never synced. I also went to my project and tried to pull the video or the audio back and forth, but it also never synced.
What are the steps to take to achieve this?

If you want the video and audio to automatically sync, Final Cut Pro X is the tool of choice, but it is more expensive than iMovie, and it has a big learning curve.
With iMovie, you can still do this by showing the wave forms and lining them up visually. There is a nuance that in iMovie, you must have video. You cannot have sound that exists outside a video element. For you, this means that if your GB track is the same length or longer than your iMovie video track, you cannot shift it side to side. This is easily fixed by adding some dummy clips before and after your video so there is room to slide the track back and forth. You can find these "Black Background" clips (and others) under the Maps tab.
I recently had to sync up some audio with video. Here is a post that explains in detail how I did it. It may help. Unfortunately, in my case, I was syncing the audio from 2 cameras. This is easier than syncing video with an audio track, but some of the tricks may still apply.
If anything still does not make sense, please ask.
One more thing. When you have an audio track like one created in GB, it is not simple in iMovie to delete a chunk of it and delete the corresponding video at the same time. Once again, this is a task better suited for Final Cut Pro X.  It is possible to export your movie to the Media Browser and then continue editing it in GB, so that may be an option for you.

  • Recording audio on garageband

HELP! I've recorded audio on garageband as a podcast using the female voice and it sounds pretty good when I export it to my itunes. I tried emailing it to someone else though and they said they couldn't open it in itunes or windows media. They were finally able to open it in QuickTime but the volume was so low even when they turned it up they could hardly hear me speaking. I need to save it as a normal mp3 i think so I can send it to people and they can listen to the audio in whatever program they use but i dont know how to do this and make the volume louder. thanks for the advice!

Go to share in menu and choose Export to disk and choose mp3.
To make it a little louder you can try boosting the track volume and master volume some. But if it's loud enough when you play it in itunes it should be the same when someone else listens to it in itunes.

  • Echo in headphones recording podcast through Skype/GarageBand

I've been following instructions for using garageband to record podcasts via Skype. I connect with the other person on Skype and then use Soundflower and Linein to shift the audio to Garageband and garageband records it fine.
The problem I am having is that I hear my own voice in my headphones as a very annoying echo. Is there a way to get rid of this? I am guessing that there is a way for me to set this up so that only the other person's voice comes back at me through my headphones, but I can't figure out how?
    Thanks for the help.

I pretty much followed these instructions, although I had to modify slightly to get it to actually work on my computer.

  • Audio Edited Track from Premiere to Audition or Soundbooth?

Just curious. If you can export OMF for ProTools,  is it possible to send a Premiere track or timeline of edited audio to Soundbooth or Audition for further editing? I know you can edit individual clips, but how about multiple clips and tracks?

Now, I am not on CS4, but I just Export my Audio as PCM/WAV (or AC3 DD 5.1 SS with the SurCode encoder) and Import into Audition for additional editing.
    Good luck,

  • How do you record video with usb mic and have the audio from garageband be the sound when recording and not just your normal voice but garage band effects for youtube?

How do you record video with usb mic and have the audio form garageband be apart of the video when recording, meaning the audio from garageband and echo  and not just your normal voice for youtube post?its not add the garageband audio its just normal voice from mic no  effects is going thru?

    Hi Life93,
What you describe would be possible by recording your video, then removing the audio from it and adding audio from GarageBand once the video is in iMovie (I presume here that you are using iMovie for your video production. Other applications may need different methods.)

  • Problems recording audio through garageband

Hello Mac world, I'm completely new to the Mac computers, and just purchased my MacBook Pro with a 2.3 ghz quad-core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD, so I don't think specs are the problem to my issue. I purchased the Mac to record audio, and also purchased an audio interface to record through (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2). I have downloaded the most recent drivers for that. I connected my guitar through the instrument input, connected the interface through USB, and connected headphones into the headphone jack. I can hear the audio playback while I play through the headphones, but my problem relates to the actual recording process, as well as the audio playback.
When recording, I get the following error: "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI - Sample rate 41068 recognized. Check conflict between GarageBand and external device". I read that GarageBand requires a sample rate of 41000, but I don't know how to check/change that. I also can't hear the metronome or the count in while I play/record. My input source is Mono 1 (Scarlett 2i2 USB), instead of Stereo (Scarlett 2i2 USB) in both my GarageBand preferences and my System Preferences.
Next, I have a problem hearing the audio playback after recording. Again, I can hear the guitar while I play, but not after I record. Also, like I mentioned above, I can't hear any metronome or count in.
I also successfully recorded using a MIDI controller when connecting directly from the controller to computer using USB. Again, I don't think that my system specs are an issue, but I am completely new to the Mac side of things, and am not sure where I am going wrong with this.
Does anyone have any clues as to what the issue may be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Adam

WO HOO I answered my own question.
I found this little gem of a tutorial:

  • Editing tracks on garageband

Does anybody know if garageband has the capability to edit tracks. I want to be able to cut existing tracks and splice in others such as vocals. If i record a better vocal for part of a piece then I would like to repace the old one. i know there are other editing programs that do this well, but i just wanted to check if i really needed one for this purpose if i have GB.
    Thanks.

It sounds like you are looking for support from the application for multiple takes. If so, GB is not fully "pro" in this regards. The Apple "Pro" apps have support for this sort of usage. I have used it within Soundtrack, and it is nice.
In GB, a simple technique is to use the Track menu's Duplicate function to duplicate the settings and effects of a vocal or instrument track. Then enable record on the new track, but not on the original, or other "takes", and mute all the other takes as well. Then "do your thing" and record another take. You can do this plenty of times. You won't hear the other takes during recording or playback until you un-mute them.
And... you might even experiment with un-muting more than one of these takes at a time, to see how you sound singing doubled or tripled. Cheapest backup singer you'll ever find!
    Hope this helps!

  • Can we import audio into GarageBand?

I'd like to import an MP3 (or any supported format) into a Garageband track.
    Can it be done?

I know this thread was last posted some time ago, but since this still comes up on the google results when asking this question, I thought I'd post the solution here as well:
You CAN import audio into GarageBand on the iPad, though you need a computer to do it. Open iTunes on your Mac or Windows machine, connect the iPad. Open the iPad up, at the top of the screen should be a tab for "Apps". Go there, then scroll down. You should see a list of apps that can share information with a computer (on mine I only have three, GarageBand, Kindle, and Clean Writer). Click on GarageBand and you'll have a chance to add files to the list. Once you've selected the files from your hard drive (i've only tried mp3 files so far), click apply.
When you go into garageband on the iPad, you can create a new track in the multi-track view, tap on the "loops" icon, tap "Audio Files" and you should see all the files you copied over from your PC or Mac. You can then drag them into the timeline. Now you can play along with your own audio.
Here's a video someone else made of the process:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X80kB4f8O4
I just wish the iPad version of garageband had some more effects. I like to practice with my iPad and my electric bass, and on the PC I can use EQ to "remove" the bass from the original song and playback with my recordings. No EQ on the iPad makes this a bit more difficult. Still a gret product, though.
