Editing ProRes HQ multicam, 3 angles, is laggy/choppy

Hi there,
I'm on a 2013 Mac Pro with 64 GB RAM.  I have 3 streams of 1080i29.97 ProRes HQ concert footage that I'm trying to edit in multicam mode and I'm getting lag/choppy playback about 5-10 seconds into playback.
I've tried the various toggle on/off mercury transmit, openCL, audio etc.  Nothing works.  I'm currently transcoding my footage to DNxHD, as some users have posted that as a workaround.
I know that drive IO is not an issue.
This issue has been asked about at various times earlier, but I was wondering if there has been any progress in actually fixing this bug.  If anyone at Adobe would care to chime in, that would be appreciated.
From what I gather, this is a ProRes/QT32server issue, which seems to plague the entire Adobe suite. ProRes is a widely used format for professional acquisition, from cameras to decks and for deliverables.  One would expect a company that produces "professional" software to be compatible with established workflows.
Thank you for your time.

Upon further investigation and moving some assets to my RAID 0 drive, it does seem to be a disk IO thing.
Thanks for letting us know.

What's strange to me is how it will playback relatively well in 7.2.2 and will be completely unusable in 8.2.
That can be confusing. New versions of applications may require higher system requirements. One thing I would look into is your project file. Did you update the project file from 8.1 to 8.2? If so, you might try a fresh project file and media.
Thanks,

  • Editing ProRes material on G4...

    Hello...
I need to edit ProRes material on my dual 1Gig G4... 1Gb RAM... have Final cut 6... only have Firewire hard drives (400/800) on which to put the ProRes footage. Only need to edit on my cinema display - don't need to output to an HD monitor. Will my system cope?!
I'd usually try to find the answer elsewhere, but I'm up to my eyes in work right now and don't have the time to Google this!!!

Umm, do yourself a huge favor and install it on a NEW harddrive or clone your current drive.
I've got a 2004 Quicksilver 1 gig Dualie with 1.5 gigs of ram and the ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Pro Edition, 256 megs of Vram.
FCP WOULD NOT launch. Motion 3 would launch but then would sit like a mule. DVD Studio Pro would launch and any movement of the mouse would result in the spinning beachball.
Save yourself the trouble and don't bother but if you must, install on a new drive or clone your current system drive as you'll be wanting it back in a hurry.
Plus I think ProRes needs a G5 proc, don't it?

  • Online video playback is severally laggy/choppy on my macbook pro 2011?

hey guys, got a bit of an issue here. I've been noticing some SEVERE lagging issues whilst viewing online (streaming) video, from various sites, including, novamov, youtube, and others. the videos rarely stop to buffer as i have a fast connection, but yet they still seem to lag wildly. what i mean by this, is the sound will continue as normal, the the picture will freeze sometimes for a good 5 seconds or so before resuming, this is happening increasingly more and more..
i am running Mac OSX Lion (latest Update) on my:
    MacBook Pro
    17-inch, Early 2011
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
If it helps my hard drive space is:
    Macintosh HD
    Capacity: 664 GB
    Available: 179.79 GB
The browser i am using is the latest version of Safari, although i have tried firefox and chrome and i experience the same issue.
I have Sophos anti-virus installed and run regular scans on my system (all clear)
i really can't think of anything else which could be causing an issue here. I haven't installed any additional software for a while, not in the time frame since the error started to occur.
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video when my £3000+ computer handles heavy applications such as Final cut pro and Photoshop with ease...
i MUST be missing something here,
I really would appreciate any help i can get here.
thankyou very much for your time

    Hey Carolyn,
Worked a treat, de-jaggy video for first time in months!!! Only point of clarification, I manually deleted the Flash plug-in before I uninstalled Flash. Don't know if this was why it worked for me rather than others but hey ...
    Thanks again!

    Hi Ben...
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video
Try troubleshooting the Flash plugin required for most YouTube video.
Quit all open browsers. I'm using Safari as a test.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure and uninstall the current plugin first.
Then launch Safari. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

  • Internet video streaming on G5 laggy, choppy

I have a G5 Mac Pro. Latest OSX one can put on it. Currently hooked up via DVI to HDMI to 46" LCD TV. Largely, everything works great. All sound and video and software works fine. The one problem I have run into which could be a deal breaker is that video streaming from the web is terrible. It is laggy, choppy, slow, etc. Sometimes the sound is off. The install is pretty fresh. I haven't checked to see what media apps might be installed, for example Flip4Mac. I have hunted around and heard things like Flash, Silverlight, or just that PPC processors cannot handle video streaming from the Internet. The video card seems standard and DVD and local video files play fine. All updates are installed. It is also like this when using a regular Dell LCD using DVI. Any suggestions?

  • Multicam: sync angles with multiple clips.

Good time of day everyone. I have beed working on the project that involves a lot of multicam syncing and editing.
At first I was very inspired with Premiere CC new multicam audio sync feature. However, I suddenly realized that there is no way to sync multiple clips from different cameras (angles, bins, etc.) the way PluralEyes does it. Only single-clip angles to a given audiom or multiple clips from one bin to audio.
So please, correct me if I'm wrong. Is there a way to sync angles with multple clips in Preliere CC?

    Hi Sasha_Baych,
Check out this help article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/create-multi-camera-source-sequence.html
You can place all the angles into on bin, and then select the bin.
Right-click (Windows), or Ctrl-click (Mac OS) and choose > Create Multicamera Source Sequence
In the Create Multicamera Source Sequence dialog box, click "Audio."
You are now set up with angles synched by audio, similar to the way you'd expect with PluralEyes.
Will that work for you? Let us know.
    Thanks,

  • Detach and edit audio in multicam

I have 2 camera angles and 3 audio tracks.
Camera 1 has Left and Right Stereo.  Left is Vocals, Right is the CD track.
Camera 2 has just a single track that is the auditorium.
I've used MultiCam to sync the two camera feeds and placed them in FCPX.  However I can't figure out how to now break apart the audio in camera one so that I can reduce the left (vocal), and increase the right (CD Track), and then combine them to be a stereo.
Thoughts?  How do I break apart the audio of a multicam so I can edit left and right independently?

You have to modify the original clips in the angle editor.
Click the Camera 1 clip. Go to the audio panel in the inspector and choose 'Dual Mono' as the channel configuration. Control-click Camera 1 clip to open it in its own timeline. That gives you control over vocals and the CD track. You can then set levels and pan for the individual tracks.
If you want to add the auditorium audio to the Camera 1 timeline, select the Camera 2 clip in the Event. Press Shift-3 to make the next edit 'Audio Only', and use Q to attach the audio tracks from Camera 2 to the timeline of Camera 1. You'll have to sync the audio yourself. Then you can assign pan and volume controls to the Camera 2 audio in the Camera 1 clip.
When you then edit the multicam clip, only switch the video and keep the audio angle as Camera 1.

  • How do I edit together two different camera angles in iMovie '11?

I've just started using iMovie '11 to put together a little concert footage of my band. I've got two videos of the same concert from two different angles. One is in front of the band and one is next to the drums. Obviously, the video next to the drums has louder audio. Is there a way I can edit these to videos together with iMovie '11 and mix together the audio as well?

If you do a lot of this you may want to try Final Cut Pro X. However, it is quite possible in iMovie.  In FCP X, there are tools for automatically aligning the clips from the various cameras and audio sources, and it is fairly straightforward to then cut between cameras as part of a compound clip.
Here is how I did it in iMovie.
I recently did this for a video of my niece's senior voice recital. (Video is below)
The key is to use the Cutaway feature of  iMovie. If you are not familiar with Cutaway, here is a good tutorial from Ken Stone.
I had three audio possibilities. A CD recording, the side camera audio track, and the back camera audio track. I decided to use the side camera audio track with heavy use of muted cutaways from the back camera. So I used the side camera as my base clips, and used the back camera as the cutaway clips. I decided the CD recording had too much noise even after fixing in Audacity. And the back camera audio track was OK but had too much coughing and noise.
Here are tips for getting it lined up perfectly.
    1) In iMovie/Preferences make sure that you check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames" so you can edit to the frame level. (Also, select "Show Advanced Tools so you get the Cutaway feature)
    2) In the iMovie Project View, set the thumbnail slider to 1/2 second so you have a great deal of control.
    3) Initially, leave the volume at 100% on the Cutaway track, so that both tracks are playing. You can hear when they are off.
    4) Click the "Waveforms" button in the Project view, so you get a visual cue of how to line up the tracks.
    5) Between the audible cues and the visual cues, you can nudge the cutaway back and forth one frame at a time by dragging until you have it perfect.
    6) When it is lined up to your satisfaction, set the volume slider of the Cutaway track to zero, and turn off the waveforms. You can also move the thumbnail slider back to 5 seconds or so.
    7) For some of the fine work, I switched to the "single row timeline view". This slows you down a bit, but lets you see the waveforms more clearly.
    8) I made heavy use of the iMovie Comment Marker feature. I watched the whole base video/audio track and inserted comment markers at the points where I wanted the Cutaway to begin and end. For example, a comment might say "Insert Cutaway 1". I would usually time the cutaway so it started at a distinct audio event, such as when the piano start. This comment marker made it easy to drag my cutaway to a point that was approximately correct.
    9) If you need to do a lot of cutaways, I find that it helps to use the SPLIT CLIP command in your project. This way you can have a single cutaway per clip, and this makes it easier to manage and is less processor and memory intensive for iMovie. I would use the comments to mark the entry and exit points of the cutaway as described above. I would then select that portion of the clip that included these markers plus a little more, so that a yellow border is around the selection. Then right-click/SPLIT CLIP (or CLIP/SPLIT CLIP in the top menu). This does not physically splt the clip within the Event. It only virtually splits the clip in the project.

  • How do you edit sound in multicam (cs5)

    Hi all,
I always see people raving about multi cam editing for wedding speeches but on the 10 or so occasions Ive given it a try I just give up instantly due to the fact that I feel so limited in what I can do with the audio.
I would use it for wedding speeches where I have 8 or 9 audio tracks, editing in 5.1 and I need to stop parts of the track distorting occasionally or removing sections of sound, boosting quiet parts etc (as the dynamics effect with limiter ticked and set to -1dB only seems to quieten down the rest of the audio from that point onwards if it severely needs to kick in), however as soon as you enable multi cam and start editing, your audio appears flattened into one track.
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I KNOW it must be possible but I just cant work out how.
    Thanks

Or...you can just nest the video only and leave all your tracks right there with the video. Although I'm not sure about CS5 as I use CS6. Either way works. For me what works best is to nest the video ONLY by alt+selecting the video clips, right-click and choose NEST...then, right-click again and choose Multicam>Enable. Now you have the video and all the audio tracks on one timeline. I find that easier to deal with personally but to each their own. Unfortunately, there's a bug and the audio meters/levels don't work while in the multicam window so you can't monitor the levels. Feel free to submit a bug report to add your name to the list of people who'd like to see that get fixed. Hope this helps.

  • Problems editing ProRes 422 in FCPX– ? Frame rate issue?

I cannot edit video I import into FCPX except by using the Proxy media option in preferences.
I'm recording video from my HCX920 camcorder to Apple ProRes 422 format with Wirecast as the recording app during simultaneous live broadcasting.
The Wirecast encoding settings are set at:  ProRes 422;  1920x1080;  29.97 fps for video and the audio is encoded as 24-bit integer; 48kHZ; 16-bit sample rate.
The video feed from the camera is 1080i at 59.94 fps.
The raw video file is identified as "Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM" in Get Info.  In QT 7 the FPS is listed as "29.81"  Playing fps with the movie playing ranges from 28-30fps.
After I've imported the video to FCPX the "Project Properties" shows the video to be "1920x1080 | 59.94p".  It seems that FCPX is importing the video recorded at 29.97 as if it were recorded at 59.97fps.  Is FCPX transcoding my video to a higher frame rate?
I am unable to play the movie once it is placed into the timeline.  It immediately stutters and shows the dropped frame warning.  I am running FCPX on a Quad-Core Mac Pro with 20GB of RAM.  The only way I can play the clip is by creating proxy media and choosing this in preferences.
What am I doing wrong?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    John

    Kevin,
No, I was never able to get this problem worked out.  It caused me to pull my hair out.  When I compared the video quality of the ProRes output from Wirecast with the video recorded in AVHCD format on my camera's SDHC card the difference was dramatic.  So I've stopped simultaneous ProRes recording in Wirecast and I now import the AVHCD material into FCPX from my camcorder's card.
I do, however, record the audio from my Wirecast broadcast and synch it with the video from the camera.  The audio captured by the camera's built in mechanism is abysmally poor.  This causes me more work but the final output is far superior to what I was getting from my Wirecast recordings regardless of format.
I wish I could help or offer more encouragement.

  • Editing ProRes or Pro ResQ  for HDCAM footage

What's the best workflow for cutting HDCAM 24p with limited storage space 500G? Should I capture in Pro Res? Pro RES HQ or DV anamorphic. Is there a 24p setting for sequences in any of these formats?

Are we talking about an online or an offline? I'm gonna assume you mean offline; otherwise the idea of down-rezzing to DV sounds, well, kinda nuts. No offense intended. (Did you mean HDV? Still kinda nuts, but considerably less so.)
If you're offlining, with the intention of conforming to online later, check out the Offline RT presets. They use M-JPEG compression, I think, and look terrible, but they're perfect for doing your edit on small, heavily compressed files and then finishing in something like 10-bit ProRes 422 HQ or uncompressed 4:2:2.

  • Black frame on ProRes 422 multicam export

No issues when watching a project in PP but when exporting within PP get a random black frame in export. Re exported several times and black frame would move to different parts of the video. Tried flattening cams, no fix. Previosuly to issue -- updated CC 2014, CUDA driver update. Music Video had 5 cameras, 1 track of audio. - have some effects in the project like blurs with dissolves.  Plays back beautifully, h.264 files were fine. Just when exporting final version to client did this occur. Tried new sequence, no difference.  Only fix was a ProRes 422 HQ file. Really didnt need HQ, standard was what was requested.  footage is native canon dslr 7D and 5D footage. Any ideas? Also, weirdly I have to change the default codec from GO Pro Cinema to ProRes 422. I'm sure there are a million variables but wanted to see if anyone had stumbled on this and had a suggestion.

#1 - You shouldn't be using ProRes HQ. All you are doing is doubling the amount of space the footage takes up. HQ is really meant for 2K footage or higher...stuff projected on a BIG screen. If this is going to DVD...SD DVD or BluRay, then regular ProRes will be your best option.
#2 - Are you looking at this footage on an HDTV? That is the only way to really tell what your footage will look like. Because the way FCP shows the footage, and QT shows it, are different. QT typically brightens the picture so that it will be viewable on most monitors. BUT, if you choose the FCP COLOR COMPATIBILITY in the QT preferences, it will show you what FCP shows you. And if this is too dark, then you need to color correct it to be how you want it to look. BUT! You cannot judge what the footage will look like on a computer monitor. It is VASTLY different that what an HDTV, or regular TV, will show you. You need to get the signal to the HDTV (HD capture card) and then color correct the footage to look the way you want it to look.
#3 - Avoid HQ. Seemed like it needed repeating.

  • Editing footage shot at different angles?

I imported 2 videos into FCP that required rendering once in the Timeline. Each segment was placed into its own sequence.
I placed In and Out points on both videos in each sequence and copied and pasted selected portions of the video into a whole new sequence.
In the new sequence, I layered the 2 videos on top of each other and used the razor tool to cut out selected portions on the top layer so the video underneath shows through to create the effect of different cuts.
1.) After making my cuts, the cut segments require rendering. Why is this?
2.) What is the correct way to cut together 2 different videos of the same thing shot at 2 different angles?
    Thanks!!!

    1) For a start, your clips should not need rendering at all if you have the sequence settings properly set. What format are you shooting in? Go up to Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup and select one that matches the settings on the camera when it was shot.
If you have a clip that for some reason requires rendering, any change you make to that clip will require re-rendering. When you place a clip on top of one another and then remove it, it will not "remember" the render settings for the lower clip. It renders the sequence as a whole and does not render each layer individually.
    2) The best way to do this would be to create a Multiclip. Select the clips in the browser, then control-click and select Make Multiclip. When you open the new clip in the Viewer, you will be able to see all of the angles simultaneously. Go to Tools > Button Bars and there should be a multiclip option there. You can now cut between angles by using the various razor blades above the timeline.
P.S. If I have completely confused you, the manual takes you through it step-by-step with pictures to help.

I use reader in one-page continuous page view at 150% zoom and when I use the hand tool to scroll the the document it is choppy and laggy to load.
    How do I fix this?

It turns out that the problem caused by the AdobeReader_enu-8.1.2_SU1-1 package deleting the /usr/share/mimelnk/application/pdf.desktop file. Restoring the file (by copying from an unaffected system) solves the problem.

  • Disc Playback Laggy & Choppy

Hello everyone, I am hoping someone can help me here. A few days ago I noticed a blu ray disc of mine that I was attempting to screencap was playing very laggy and choppy and the sound would get ahead of the video. It's done this to me before on occasion but always cleared up and I assumed it was from the heavy usage of taking caps. Now it's doing it when I play dvd as well and when I am not doing anything else on the computer.
    I found this post
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/video-play-back-is-choppy-and-lagging/td-p/2...
And I believe I got a new driver update a bit before the problem first got really bad, so I've downgraded to various older drivers and now where the problem would first show up about 5 minutes into watching, it's happening just over 1 minute in.
    My driver search terms are
    GeForce
    GeForce 600M Series (Notebooks)
    GeForce GT 650M
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
    English
    All
And I have tried from there
    GeForce 340.43 Driver - BETA
GeForce 337.88 Driver - WHQL (which I believe was the one I downloaded just before the problem started)
    GeForce 337.50 Driver - BETA
    GeForce 335.23 Driver - WHQL
The last of which I did on "clean install" and that was when the time changed to only 1 minute before the choppiness would start. I am still on that driver now.
My computer is a HP ENVY dv7-7212nr Notebook PC. If anyone has a suggestion of something else I can try to fix this it would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
