Editing ProRes material on G4...

Hello...
I need to edit ProRes material on my dual 1Gig G4... 1Gb RAM... have Final cut 6... only have Firewire hard drives (400/800) on which to put the ProRes footage. Only need to edit on my cinema display - don't need to output to an HD monitor. Will my system cope?!
I'd usually try to find the answer elsewhere, but I'm up to my eyes in work right now and don't have the time to Google this!!!

Umm, do yourself a huge favor and install it on a NEW harddrive or clone your current drive.
I've got a 2004 Quicksilver 1 gig Dualie with 1.5 gigs of ram and the ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Pro Edition, 256 megs of Vram.
FCP WOULD NOT launch. Motion 3 would launch but then would sit like a mule. DVD Studio Pro would launch and any movement of the mouse would result in the spinning beachball.
Save yourself the trouble and don't bother but if you must, install on a new drive or clone your current system drive as you'll be wanting it back in a hurry.
Plus I think ProRes needs a G5 proc, don't it?

• Problems editing ProRes 422 in FCPX– ? Frame rate issue?

I cannot edit video I import into FCPX except by using the Proxy media option in preferences.
I'm recording video from my HCX920 camcorder to Apple ProRes 422 format with Wirecast as the recording app during simultaneous live broadcasting.
The Wirecast encoding settings are set at:  ProRes 422;  1920x1080;  29.97 fps for video and the audio is encoded as 24-bit integer; 48kHZ; 16-bit sample rate.
The video feed from the camera is 1080i at 59.94 fps.
The raw video file is identified as "Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM" in Get Info.  In QT 7 the FPS is listed as "29.81"  Playing fps with the movie playing ranges from 28-30fps.
After I've imported the video to FCPX the "Project Properties" shows the video to be "1920x1080 | 59.94p".  It seems that FCPX is importing the video recorded at 29.97 as if it were recorded at 59.97fps.  Is FCPX transcoding my video to a higher frame rate?
I am unable to play the movie once it is placed into the timeline.  It immediately stutters and shows the dropped frame warning.  I am running FCPX on a Quad-Core Mac Pro with 20GB of RAM.  The only way I can play the clip is by creating proxy media and choosing this in preferences.
What am I doing wrong?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kevin,
No, I was never able to get this problem worked out.  It caused me to pull my hair out.  When I compared the video quality of the ProRes output from Wirecast with the video recorded in AVHCD format on my camera's SDHC card the difference was dramatic.  So I've stopped simultaneous ProRes recording in Wirecast and I now import the AVHCD material into FCPX from my camcorder's card.
I do, however, record the audio from my Wirecast broadcast and synch it with the video from the camera.  The audio captured by the camera's built in mechanism is abysmally poor.  This causes me more work but the final output is far superior to what I was getting from my Wirecast recordings regardless of format.
I wish I could help or offer more encouragement.

• How to export edited 5D material into same Format

Hello ppl!
Just maybe someone can help me with this one...
I know it is more of Technical side of 5D, but my Q has something to do with it;
As we know, 5D shoots video, compresses it with H.264 codec and saves it in .MOV container!
For EDITING purposes I use ADOBE CS5 (strong working station with CUDA Mercury engine and everything)...
Anyhow, I was just shooting "Making Of" for some Feature film - and what I wanna do is CLEAR FOOTAGE MATERIALS of unnecessary parts - and then export it back to HDD and give it to Film production
But how do I get to export edited material in the same container and with same properties as originally shot footage was????
ADOBE has quite powerful MEDIA ENCODER, but you can't save h.264 file to have .MOV extension!!!
You can choose H.264, but then your file will have *.mp4 extension... -- Further on - will that file be of the same quality as the file I downloaded from my CF-card???
Any ideas about that - or maybe an advice for some other ENCODER???? ----- Just don't suggest MAC cause I can't afford it at the moment!!!!
What I can do is use AVID MEDIA COMPOSER 4 or 5 (also on my Windows workstation) - but since AVID recodes all footage as the first step when importing it, I am not sure it would fullfill my needs!!!!!
Hope someone will know how to handle it!!!!
Cheers!
V:

-You see, the problem is that my Premier, actually my Adobe Media Encoder can't export to any MOV file higher than Standard Def... Why is it so, I don't know, maybe cause my QT isn't PRO???? Do you think that going PRO would help this matter?
No, you don't need QT Pro for export (or import, for that matter). Are you selecting Preset or Video Codec in the Export Settings window? Like this:
Do you have these, or at least most of them?
-- you also mention ProRes and Proxy here as well, but I am stuck with PC - I wonder how are those AVID QT CODECS gonna work with PREMIERE - are they also gonna re-encode the entire material???
The Avid codecs work fine with Premiere on a PC--I use them frequently myself. But, yes--regardless of the codec you use to export these files, they will be transcoded/re-encoded. I just checked with an FCP buddy, and he said that his Canon T2i clips (similar/same format to the 5D) will import directly into FCP, so if that's what you're using on the Mac, you can forgo the transcoding. That said, transcoding to DNxHD (or ProRes) is not going to incur a visual quality hit, though the files will be larger.
- which Format (codec) are the final files gonna be???
H.264! They're the same as the originals, just trimmed to length.
- Thanx for that one! I hope it works on Windows as well, since Windows is my OS - and thnx for coupon code:))))
Well, you use this plug-in on the Mac; it enables you to read NTFS-formatted drives on the Mac. You'd just continue to do what you've always done, and the Mac user would need the plug-in. If you want to read HFS formatted drives on a PC, you can use Paragon HFS for Windows or MacDrive. Either of those will be good for HFS drives on a PC. Of course, you only need one of these drivers; either NTFS on Mac, or HFS on PC.
There was some mention of using Quick Time PRO as only solution here... Do you have any idea what is that all about??? What can be done - editing wise - with QT PRO??? Or is it just bringing up some more Codecs into the game????
I prefer MPEG Streamclip; it does all the editing (well, the editing you need) that QT Pro does, and it doesn't cost anything. I recommend checking that out first before sending Steve Jobs any money

• How do I edit HDV material on an extern computer?

Hi.
I´m in a tricky situation, since I moved from Copenhagen, Denmark,to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, without my macpro quadcore, on which all my material for my upcoming movie is on, but would like to access it from Rio. What to do?
It´s all HDV material and I would like to edit it from Rio, accessing the Macpro in Copenhagen from Rio. Is this possible, and what would it take? Xsan, a very fast broadband connection? An extra server?
Any help would be very much appreciated- thanks!

I can't see this working. Accessing any footage over the internet would be too slow to be workable, let alone HD. If an ISP says they offer 8 Mbps, they mean it's theoretically capable of 8 Mbps but you won't get anywhere near that at peak times. You'd need an expensive dedicated line like a T1 or T3 or something. Also, Xsan is really designed for shared storage on a local network.
You seem prepared to shell out money for a server and fast broadband line but really, the cheapest thing to do would be to buy an external hard drive and get someone in Denmark to copy the data onto it for you and ship it out. The second cheapest thing to do would be to get your Mac Pro shipped to Brazil. Anything else would be very expensive and very complicated.
Edit: You could use Remote Desktop of course to control your screen on the Mac Pro but there would be a lot of interface lag. I don't think you could actually use it to edit something.

• Editing ProRes HQ multicam, 3 angles, is laggy/choppy

Hi there,
I'm on a 2013 Mac Pro with 64 GB RAM.  I have 3 streams of 1080i29.97 ProRes HQ concert footage that I'm trying to edit in multicam mode and I'm getting lag/choppy playback about 5-10 seconds into playback.
I've tried the various toggle on/off mercury transmit, openCL, audio etc.  Nothing works.  I'm currently transcoding my footage to DNxHD, as some users have posted that as a workaround.
I know that drive IO is not an issue.
This issue has been asked about at various times earlier, but I was wondering if there has been any progress in actually fixing this bug.  If anyone at Adobe would care to chime in, that would be appreciated.
From what I gather, this is a ProRes/QT32server issue, which seems to plague the entire Adobe suite. ProRes is a widely used format for professional acquisition, from cameras to decks and for deliverables.  One would expect a company that produces "professional" software to be compatible with established workflows.
Thank you for your time.

Upon further investigation and moving some assets to my RAID 0 drive, it does seem to be a disk IO thing.
Thanks for letting us know.

What's strange to me is how it will playback relatively well in 7.2.2 and will be completely unusable in 8.2.
That can be confusing. New versions of applications may require higher system requirements. One thing I would look into is your project file. Did you update the project file from 8.1 to 8.2? If so, you might try a fresh project file and media.

• Editing ProRes or Pro ResQ  for HDCAM footage

What's the best workflow for cutting HDCAM 24p with limited storage space 500G? Should I capture in Pro Res? Pro RES HQ or DV anamorphic. Is there a 24p setting for sequences in any of these formats?

Are we talking about an online or an offline? I'm gonna assume you mean offline; otherwise the idea of down-rezzing to DV sounds, well, kinda nuts. No offense intended. (Did you mean HDV? Still kinda nuts, but considerably less so.)
If you're offlining, with the intention of conforming to online later, check out the Offline RT presets. They use M-JPEG compression, I think, and look terrible, but they're perfect for doing your edit on small, heavily compressed files and then finishing in something like 10-bit ProRes 422 HQ or uncompressed 4:2:2.

i would love to get firewire, ha. i just didn't have the budget for it when purchased. I'm hoping that if i can get them transferred to FW drives i can edit them if they're playback is real low quality, but if not i'll have to recompress. thanks for the input!

• Editing Sony material frppm SOny hard disk

I have footage shot with the very small new Sony hard disk camcorder. AVCHD with .MTS format.
How do I get it into FCP6 for editing? Can I output on DVD or some other format?

Update to 6.0.2...then use the Log and Transfer option in the FILE menu. In the little Sprocket drop down menu, choose PRO RES or AIC as the transcoding option...as FCP doesn't deal with AVCHD natively.
OUtput to DVD? Yes...via COmpressor and DVD Studio Pro. SD DVD only. And...what other format were you thinking about?

• Importing Pro Res to Final Cut Express

What's the best way of importing raw Pro Res files into FCE. I've tried exporting to AIC but the quality diminishes significantly. Should the quality drop this much? Is there a better option? Thanks

If you are editing HD material in FCE, your only option is AIC as ProRes is not supported.
If you wish to edit ProRes material your options are FCP 6/7 or Premiere Pro.
FCP7 and the FCS Suites have been discontinued but people have had luck finding previously owned versions on ebay or craigslist - though often for more than the original price.
Premiere Pro CS5.5 and 6 seem to work with ProRes material as long as you have the codecs installed.
Good luck,

Hi,
As of my knowledge, there is no purchase organization specific texts exits. But you may make use of the purchase organization specific text in vendor master. You may define purchase organization specific text for vendor master and then maintain the text in vendor master. You may configure to copy the vendor master text to PO automatically. Refer the doc: Copy Control in MM (Conditions, Fields and Texts): (3rd part)

• Material document edit

Dear experts,
I m editing MSEG table for changing the value (Amount), but i am getting error, "that cost center entry is not existing in CSKS table". but the entry is existing in CSKS table,
Please suggest me how should i over come this, OR is there any other table were i can edit the material document
Thanks
Ravi

Hi,
As per your message, your are trying to edit the material document amount in MSEG which is a standard SAP table, which is not all recommended as this may cause inconsistencies in your FI books.
If you want to make any changes better you reverse the material document and create a fresh one after making the necessary value corrections.
Thanks & Regards,

• How Do I Edit Apple ProRes 422 HQ on my PC?

I've recieved some footage that I'm supposed to be editing, but all of is Apple ProRes 422 HQ and I've got a PC. Everytime I try to import the files into either Premiere CC or AfterFX CC the audio works, but the video is just a blank green screen. So my question is, how do I edit ProRes on my PC? What steps do I need to take to make it editable?

As Richard stated, just install Apple QuickTime, nothing to purchase. I've edited ProRes on several different PCs and never an issue (QT was already installed by default on those machines).
Thanks

• Client wants .mov or .avi viewable and editable on a p.c. Ugh!

Sorted out the media drive issue at least. The files are very large ntsc/dv exports.
.avi ntsc/dv codec isn't working, nor the original .mov exports.
I would have thought ntsc/dv would be a pretty standard codec on the latest build of Quicktime for Windows, but apparently not. The client isn't very media savvy. Should we advise him to try downloading any particular codec component packs?
Or do we need a conversion app? QT on mac seems to limit .avi encoding to none, ntsc/dv, animation, and cinepak.
Anybody had any success doing this?

Hi Joey,
DV usually works on both systems...
You need to deliver at the highest res possible since your client
needs to edit this material and the original source would be best.
However, before you start with big exports or conversion try one or two tests
with Uncompressed and Animation.
Yeah you might end up with huge files but what matter first is that
your client can play your delivered material at its best.
If she only needed to preview this you could suggest to download the ProRes decoder for PC.
So in short export a tiny portion of your material in Animation and Uncompressed (I'd stay away from exporting AVIs if possible)and see what she says
