Editing (rank beginner)

I've transferred an old VHS to DVD using a free-standing Sony DVD combo unit. The DVD plays on multiple DVD players of various pedigrees and ages. Nifty. I'm now completely confused about digital vs. analog. I thought making the DVD turned this into digital info. True?
(No copyright issues here.) Whether it's digital or analog, can I import this onto a Mac (Tiger) if I'd like to edit? I don't really anticipate doing much if any editing, but I'd like to make a nicer playlist.
Playing around with Tiger's iMovie and iDVD, sometimes it looks like I can import files from a DVD. But when I look at the names of the files, I don't know what I need to select and I don't see anything successfully import.
So starting at the beginning, what do I need in order to be able to import a video now on a DVD in order to edit (and then burn a new DVD)?

Welcome to the forums. There are lots of good people here who can help you with your questions. I'll try to help get you started.
Yes, when you copied your VHS tapes onto DVDs you did convert them to digital. However, the digital format on a playable DVD is MPEG2 which is not a format you can edit with iMovie, Final Cut or other such editing programs.
Neither iMovie nor iDVD can import video directly from an existing DVD.
You will need a program such as MPEG Streamclip to convert your DVD video to the DV format required for editing. And if your Mac doesn't already have the Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Component (it probably doesn't), you'll have to buy & download it from Apple.
Fortunately MPEG Streamclip is FREE and the MPEG2 Playback Component is only $20.
After you have these 2 programs installed on your Mac you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert your DVDs to DV format Quicktime files that you can edit with iMovie.
Once you're done editing in iMovie, it's easy to transfer your movie to iDVD and create that new DVD you want.

Matching the audio to different camera angles (I am a beginner.)

Before I take the video I have in mind, here is a question:
While the person is speaking, I want to take shots of the back of his head, the side of his head, etc, while he is talking. I do not want the viewer to see the movement traveling round his head, though! I want to do it the way you so often see on tv and in movies: two people talking, and the camera is behind the head of the one talking so that one can see with whom he is talking. Then the camera view changes and you are looking straight at the speaker and seeing the back of the head of the person being spoken to. Different angles, but with the audio flowing smoothly.
I see that it is a matter of the audio moving smoothly, whereas the video can be cut anywhere. I see that it's not just a matter of separating audio from video, because when there is audio, it has to match the mouthof the speaker.
But HOW do I get the audio to smoothly progress while I edit out the video clips? I have iMovie '06. Is it an easy thing to just separate the audio from the video and edit out the video? Since I have only one camcorder, a Sony digital video camera recorder DCR-TRV 11, does this mean that I have to shoot extra non verbal footage?
HOW DO I GET A VARIETY OF CAMERA VIEWS WHILE AT THE SAME TIME COORDINATING THE AUDIO/VOICE?

I have thought about this and have decided that since I am at rank beginner stage, the Grasshopper stage, I might be wise to move keep editing to a minimal. I see this as meaning that sometimes as the speaker is speaking, the viewer will see the Sony digital video camera recorder DCR-TRV 11 moving around, going to another spot, rather than eliminating the process of the movement and editing out the movement.
Of course, if the actor is not speaking, then I will feel free to stop recording, move to another angle, and then start the camcorder again.
Technique wise, that is possible, right? It seems to me that this is how most beginners start out. I don't see myself using TWO camcorders at any point. though. I see that as something that more advanced moviemakers do, when the video is more than just a home thing to be shared on a website.
I am beginning to acquire a great fascination for this art and this technique both.

Edit / Insert Multiple Records

OK, I'm a Rank beginner here. I have seen the MX Kollection many years ago when I used Dreamweaver MX. I have just purchased the Dreamweaver developer's toolkit in my attempt to try and make editing multiple records in a database dreamweaver friendly.
But I just cannot se how you make the tables that are shown in all of the tutorials that are displayed on the web! They tend to just skip past all of that and rant about how good this product is.
Can anybody show me a page or site that will take me through how to set up and build some pages that will allow me to edit multiple records.

My personal opinion is that you probably won't see any benefit because under the hood I think Oracle will still be doing single row inserts. I could be wrong though.
The only way to confirm was if you did a test of multiple inserts vs an INSERT ALL, that is if the INSERT ALL met your requirements.

Contact Facebook and ask their team of web developers how they do it. Seriously, this is no project for a rank beginner. Without advanced coding skills and a very good grasp of web server security, you are in over your head. DW is a tool. It's only as good as the person using it.

What Illy CS4 book would you recommend for the beginner to grow with?

I am looking for a good illustrator cs4 book for the beginner to grow with.
I have read reviews on amazon but thought I might ask the pros.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The instructions that ship with the program: The Help menu.
I know it's boring, but if you want to learn a new program, the most expedient way is to work through the provided manual, cover to cover. Don't just read it, actually perform the operations it describes.
Third-party books almost universally involve these downsides:
They are expensive.
They are incomplete. They try to walk a fence-edge between rank beginner and intermediate user; between being merely a too-wordy reiteration of the Help files and next-level techniques for the more experienced user. The reason is obvious: the goal is to sell to as wide a range of users as possible. The result is often unsatisfying: They can't possibly include everything in the Help files, so they leave gaps for the beginner. But they feel compelled to appeal to beginners, so the experienced user has to weed through a bunch of entry-level bulk, just to get to the "juicy stuff" he's interested in. He pay's 100% price for about 15% of the content.
The are inefficient. They are full of unnecssary verbiage attempting to be clever, cute, hip, friendly, and thereby supposedly more "approachable." Most fail miserably at this, and the result is you have to read through endless passages of such original content as "this will knock your socks off" and "this is awesome" when what you really need is "just the facts, ma'am." The Help files fall under the stylistic guidelines of technical documentation: They adhere to "just-the-facts, ma'am."
They are short-lived. They go quickly out-of-date, which is one of the reasons why they are too expensive: They have to make their money quickly after release.
I'm not saying don't buy any. I have a small fortune's-worth myself, all but a dozen or so of which I wish I had never bought. With the money I wasted on them (plus interest), I could buy a new Honda Fury. I'm just saying do the included documentation--however painful--first. And keep doing it for new features when new versions are released. That will get you there the quickest, because it will lay the necessary foundations of overall interface scheme and basic object principles. Then, when you have that understanding, look only for books that are targeted toward an at-least intermediate level user. That way, your money will be spent, but it will be better-invested.

File Size Discrepancy Between Photoshop & the Finder

I'm trying to be as brief as I can, so here goes. The specific application (PS) is irrelevant, I think. This is about why an app shows one file size & the Finder shows a different file size. In this case, it's a huge difference, due to the file being an image.
I imported into PS CS, from a CD, an original image, which the Finder shows as 269.4 MB. The file format is TIFF, and the bit-depth is 16, not 8. The Finder shows it as a "TIFF Document." Now. I did a Save As and edited that as a master image file. So, I have two files: the original and the master.
I substantially cropped (deleted) pixels in the master file. So, at the same 16-bit depth, the master file should be smaller in size than the original. Right? However, the Finder shows the file to be 433.6 MB in size! Photoshop shows the file to be a more realistic 185.8 MB in size. Why is the Finder showing such a huge file size? Why is the Finder storing 247.8 MB more than I need? The Finder shows this file as an "Adobe Photoshop TIFF file," so there has been a change in format. The file is flattened; no layers, etc., are involved.
One clue could be that the Finder is storing the larger file size to accommodate Photoshop. If one multiplies 185.8 MB by 3, the result is close to the 433.6 MB figure. The 3 stands for the three color channels (red, green, blue) of each pixel (data element) in the image.
The original image, however, is stored correctly by the Finder. Photoshop and the Finder agree on the 269.4 MB file size. If the above scenario were true, the Finder would be storing the original file at three times the size as shown in Photoshop. In other words, there would be consistency in what the Finder is doing.
I suppose I could just ignore the discrepancy, but I have hundreds of images to process, and I don't want to have to go into PS every time to get a true reading of file sizes. The Finder should be accurate in doing that.
I may be in the wrong forum re: Photoshop, but here I think I can find some expertise re: the Finder, since the Finder's storing procedures are in question, to my mind. It's definitely an app/OS interface problem, as I see it. Simply, I edit a file downward in data, save it, yet the Finder saves it at a larger size.

Yes, depending on your History settings. The more you work on an image, the more history it accumulates. The more different states and sanpshots you save in the History palette, the bigger the file gets as you work on it, because you're storing (within the file) complete information about the file's state before and after every individual change you make to it. What I don't recall is whether that all gets saved to the file in a Save As, or whether the history is flushed each time the file is Saved.
I should warn you that I am by NO stretch of the imagination a PS expert. I was still using PS 5.0.2 until last February, when I upgraded to CS2 (knowing it will be years before I have enough hardware horsepower to run CS3). I'm a rank beginner with CS2, and if someone else wants to jump in here and point out that I'm all wrong, it will be no surprise to me. And because I never used CS, I don't know whether what I'm describing in CS2 is even relevant here.

The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server (NNTP)

so I'm opening this new thread. The problem was never solved and I could not deal with the help being offered here previously.
The problem is...
My connection to a NNTP news service which I use very frequently is reset every 10 minutes so that I get the message: The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server.
I have been getting this error at least a dozen times per day for more than a year. So it has become a major annoyance and I want to fix it if possible. I wonder if there's any new insight available? I'm not a rank beginner but am far from being a router expert. I do not understand many of the router settings.
Here's a more detailed description of the problem...
After getting the error, I must then click on something else in my email client (Outlook Express) then return to click on a newsgroup under that news service, whereupon it reestablishes a valid connection for another 10 minutes. If I am active and click on various messages to read them in the newsgroup, the 10 minute timeout does not happen. It's only when I have left the connection idle without activity for 10 minutes that it times out.
This is a news server which requires an authenticated login with username and password. The same problem happens at a different news server which also requires an authenticated login with username and password. So it is not a problem unique to just one news service. It affects all news services which have an authenticated login requirement. An example news service with a sample newsgroup which has this type of problem is

It's free but you must register at http://eternal-september.org/ to use this news service.
It does not happen at open news services without any login requirements. So it is definitely related to the login requirement.
Perhaps most importantly, it does not happen if I remove the Linksys E2000 router from the circuit and connect my DSL modem directly to computer. So it is definitely a router-related problem causing this inactivity timeout every 10 minutes.

How to fix ICC profile errors?

I just brought Photoshop CS6 lately and I am trying to edit a picture but I get this message:
"The embedded ICC profile cannot be used because the embedded ICC profile is invalid. Ignoring the profile" "
What do I do to fix this?
Please provide clear instructions as this is the first time I am using Photoshop.

Some clueless individual handed you a file with an invalid color profile embedded.
You can either ask for or demand a corrected file from your source, or you can just let Photoshop ignore the profile and then assign different profiles to the file until you find the one that makes the colors in the image look best to you—by trial and error.
You should know that color management is far from an easy subject. If you're a rank beginner in Photoshop, be prepared to do a lot of reading on the subject. You could start here:

What do I press to sync the iphone

My phone won't sync automatically. Is there something I can press to show my phone icon on the screen? Once I see the phone icon I feel certain I can get it to sync. I'm a rank beginner at all this. Many thanks for any help.

To sync
FIrst, you need to have iTUnes on your computer. (the latest is 11.03 I believe)
Open iTunes and connect your iPhone.
After a minute or so you should see your iPhone appear in iTunes. You may need to tweak the defaults for iTunes. Control B brings up the menu bar (the familiar file, edit, etc along the top) and control S will bring up the sidebar. In that sidebar you will see the name of your iPhone.
Click on the name of your iPhone and you should see a summary page. On that will be info about your device. Its serial number, what operating system it's running, etc.
Scroll down on that summary page and you'll see syncing options. One of them is to 'sync automatically when connected to iTUnes'. THere will also be an option to sync wirelessly.
make the choices you want then sync. You have to make a sync to affirm those choices.

Well fiddle... looks like now I've done it -- and it's stuck. Saved the file, and tried to start afresh -- nada. Same ...
i'm trying to merge two vector layers. I selected and copied the layer from a source and pasted it onto a target, and and tried to use 'Merge'...

same thing. Ouch!   If the program knows it has an error, then does that mean the error was programmed into the product to begin with?
At least it' was polite about it -- unlike Window which just thows blue screens and core dumps at me... ;-/ ... Ideas?
Haven't tried support yet... haven't tried uninstalling product and reinstalling...what a pain...

These statements would appear to contract each other, and you make me feel like I or something about me is on trial many or most of the times I submit any question or problem I have. This would tend to make most people feel defensive.

As I pointed out, 'clearly', I don't normally have those problems either -- if I did, I would consider it normal behavior. It's something out of the ordinary that I posted to see if anyone else had seen or knew of a specific cause for. I quickly added via a 2nd post that I had worked around the problem, so at that point it wasn't about debugging the probem or finding a solution -- but about finding out where, ***in photoshop***, (unless you want to maintain that the Nvidia driver is putting up that message), that message is generated, and under what conditions. Clearly there is no one no this board with that information.
Attempting to go on about solving the bug, blaiming it on my HW setup, my 'expertise' or 'lack there of', my flakiness (as you state it), or my lack of [compared to you, by your words] professionalism or experience, is simply abusive.

I note they have been silent during your attacks, but hope they realize that my statement was not unjustified given this isn't the first time you've launched into this type of answer out of the "goodness of your heart"...
As for your statement: "if you'd like to have others verify whether they see your problem using EXACTLY your file, you can make it available for others" - I have offered to upload my files more than once. Nobody has responded to any request asking where to upload it to.
Why you think going into your "credentials" -- about how professional you are, when you go launch into attacks like these should hold any weight is beyond me.
If you are here to help, "out of the goodness of your heart" (your words), you aren't showing it.
Instead, you are launching into how I'm using the wrong tool, the wrong technique, the wrong hardware...etc.
You claim Nvidia's drivers have more problems with Adobe SW or Photoshop, yet when they are used by other vendors supercomputer applications where accuracy is far more scrutinized, and they are used for real-time display composition, they don't have the same problems.    Yet under less demanding, static conditions once vendor claims more problems in the driver. When it is used under more stringent conditions and under higher load and works, with more vendors and customers, abut one vendor claims problems, one usually looks in the 1 vendors usage of the driver -- and not at the driver.
You claim that one or more Adobe engineers favor ATI over NVidia drivers -- in my experience, that affects whether they bother to track down the source of 'faults' (meaning, when it's a bug in their code, they just assume it is in the driver they don't like, vs. if it is in the Vendor they like, they will do the extra work and find the root cause -- fixing problems in their code **OR**, if finding problems in the vendors code, will report them with the result that those bugs get fixed.
By preferring ATI over Nvidia, Adobe is less likely to find bugs in their own usage of the drivers, and unlikely to make sure such bugs are fixed in the drivers -- so the next generation of drivers is only likely to be worse.
There are much larger venders and user bases that don't have these problems -- this strongly points to to a specific application's usage (in their code, or in driver code that only they use).
It doesn't matter from a customer perspective. Adobe doesn't say "we only support ATI cards, or prefer ATI cards, officially", so anything less than thorough response to perceived Nvidia problems is "unprofessional". It's lettting personal biases give customers a poorer experience.
You supporting the status quo is ingratiating, but not helpful to them inproving their product.
That doesn't fall into my definition of what is good for the company.
So you might question the goodness of your heart w/rt how you respond to people needing help and your attitudes towards platform superiority if you really want to promote what is good for the company and for customers.
And the whole thing about professionalism is more than a bit amusing, considering when I came to this forum less than a year ago (or so?) I stated I was a rank beginner. That you would bother to justify your professionalism to a rank amature, bespeaks volumes of your insecurity and the *lack* of goodness in your heart.

FWIW, I don't have a 'rig', and have little pride in it, nor would it qualify as 'new', at nearly 2 years.
I do little gaming. I average < 1 game year. I do get 1080p, 10-bit playback wwithout stutters or frame drops of real-time video while editing in Photoshop (usually)... Not a normal way of working, but when I have guests that want to watch video, while I am doing work, it's doable. Does your machine sit in your living room and double as a media center?   I can't afford multiple machines -- I don't have a company paying hardware/software.
I get you are well off and can afford to buy multiple cards to test with on a whime -- as you suggest to me. That's not where I come from.
Also, I'm aware that before CS4, photo shop had a caveat saying it couldn't work with multiple GPU's (Crossfire/SLI/285/590's (from a driver perspective, a 285/590, is an SLI setup -- 2 cards)). I'm also aware that Adobe claims to have fixed the problem in CS4, with photoshop (though not some other products). It's is also the case that Nividia has exclusions for Multi-GPU mode for Adobe's products that don't work in multi-GPU mode. Before CS4, that included an exclusion for photoshop. Adobe's claim was that it worked, and Nvidia removed the exclusion in their per-app auto-config tool.
If you want to claim that Adobe lied to Nvidia about photoshop being multi-GPU cable, it's trivial for Nvidia (or an end user like me), to change the config to be single-GPU only).
You need to be clear -- are you saying Nvidia should remove Photoshop's compatability with Multi-GPU setups, or not.
If you aren't willing to say -- then, you are guilty of being a worse flake than me -- as you are making vague statements about reliability, but aren't willing to say -- to Adobe and Nvidia, officially whether such configs should be enabled or disabled.
So please don't put me in the middle. I'm just a customer who believed what Adobe offficially said. If you know they are wrong -- please make sure Adobe and Nvidia offically know about this --- and new drivers will automatically have multi-GPU abilities turned off for Photoshop.
You won't need to take it out on users like me.

Format XML doc based on values in another xml doc

Database version : Oracle 10g
I have an XML "data" file and an associated error file that is also XML. I want to take the XML data file and highlight visually in a html file only those fields and contents that are there in the "error" file.
There are many fields in the data file so the error could be just about anywhere. Can someone please tell me what I should read or give me some direction on how I should proceed?
I built a style sheet for the "data" file - but obviously that is static. Do i need 2 stylesheets and apply them both somehow? I was also thinking that I would use the "error" xml doc and just rewrite the error nodes in the "data" file and then use the style sheet to mark up the data file based on what i rewrite.
eg
if the data is say
<field1>content of field 1</field1>
and the error file has field1 in it, I would rewrite the data file to have say <error>content of field 1</error> and just mark up the <error> using the stylesheet. Is that a sensible solution? Even then I need help on the actual xml/sql functions i need to rewrite the xml data.
I am a rank beginner in this and I apologize - This seems such a newbie question that must have been asked before - I just wish I could find it in the forum.

Stumped

I have been working with Dreamweaver for a few years now. I
have a website and I need to insert some kind of slide show (just
plain photos with no text or anykind of user interaction). I want
to insert the slide presentation right in the middle of my first
screen (index.htm). I have downloaded the latest editions fo
Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks. I also downloaded Articulate for
PowerPoint. Please - if somebody could explain how to do this as if
they were tallking to a rank beginner, I can't tell you how
thankful I would be......

I have been using this Flash extension in various projects
for a while

Change a cell/table color

Hi,
Rank beginner here. I am trying DW over FP and struggling.
I have created a table with 3 rows. My first is the header.
On the second I would like to change the color of the row. But in
properties it only allows me to make changes to the fonts.
I am following a video tutorial as I dyslexic and find coding
and so on hard.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to change the color of
just this row?

Modifying coordinates

What syntax can you use to modify specific coordinates in an sdo_geometry.
I've been trying something like this, where 'envelope' is my spatial column:

WHERE id = 50003;but i'm obviously not figuring out the correct way to reference the individual components within the sdo_ordinates varray, because it gives me an error message when i try that, although this code works as expected:

FROM mf3d_cityobject m;for those who read my other recent thread, what i'm trying to do here is edit the coordinates so that the data will validate. The software that imports the CityGML data unfortunately violates some validation rules, one being the one mentioned in the other thread that the footprint has to be in a plane orthogonal to an axis (i.e., the xy plane in this case) and the other being the orientation of the coordinates (XYZ for the first corner have to all be smaller than XYZ of the second corner when using an oprimized rectangle, if I'm understanding the documentation correctly).
