Editing Reminders in iCal

I was really excited for being able to manage tasks and reminders on my iPad and iPhone through iCal, but I'm frustrated with how crippled iCal seems to be using iCloud. Am I the only one who can't even check off a task as completed if it's on a Reminder calendar other than the default one? If so, what should I do to fix it?

I like the new Reminders app on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2, but I find the iCloud's Calendar interface for accessing Reminders extremely clunky. It presents the lists in a narrow column on the left side and the items in the list in a narrow column on the right side, with my huge empty calendar in between. There's no way to widen the columns or shrink the calendar or post the columns side by side. Very clumsy. There needs to be a way to break out the Reminders from the calendar, like Google Tasks can pop out of my mail in my browser. Or just put a separate link to Reminders on the iCloud home page.

Cannot edit Reminders in iCal

I cannot edit some of the Reminders in iCal on my MacPro. I tried to figure out what's different about the ones I can't edit, and it may be that they are set to "repeat every day" - I can change them on my iPhone with the Reminders app, but it doesn't make sense to me that I can't change that on my computer. I'd like to end the repeat every day w/out having to use my iPhone.
Does anyone know what's the problem - is it fixable?

Please, please, please, report the issue that both alarms and due dates at the same time are not possible as a bug here:http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html. The more people who submit it, the more likely apple will listen.

Why can't I edit reminders in iCal?

If I create a reminder on my iPhone, I cannot edit it in iCal. It shows up just fine, but it is read only....

It seems they can be edited in iCloud, but not in iCal. Also, the repeat feature is only available on the iPhone. I think this is a bug.

I've got my MacBook set up with Lion 10.7.2, and my iPad and iPhone are now running iOS 5. I have an iCloud account set up and am happily syncing reminders back and forth. My problem though is this: I can't seem to edit reminders in iCal on my MacBook. I can edit them on the devices, just not on the computer.
I can doubleclick on an iCloud reminder just fine and its bubble pops up, but there's no way I can see to actually edit the data there. Same if I select the reminder and then choose "Edit Reminder" from the Edit menu. It looks like this screenshot:
So does anyone know if I may have set something up wrong, or if I've stumbled across a bug of some sort? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

I tried to include a screenshot in my original post, but apparently it didn't work.
I can edit regular reminders just fine doing what you describe. However, when I try to do the same thing for a repeating reminder, the popup that comes up is not editable. That's the frustrating part.
I suspect the theory espoused earlier on the thread is correct, i.e., that iCal hasn't had real support for repeating reminders built into it yet. I can work around the problem so far by updating the reminders in question on either my iPhone or iPad, but that particular workaround is useful only if you have an iPhone or iPad.

Reminders in ical

I have a reminders list synced between my iphone and my computer.
For some reason, I can't complete or edit certain reminders on my computer that I created in my iphone. If I update the event in my iphone - it will update on the computer - but I can't edit the event while working on my computer.
I think I should be able to change the event in either spot.
Does anyone have advice on how to fix this? Thanks.

UPDATE: There's no issue changing reminders using the reminders app on icloud.
For now my workaround will just be to use the icloud site on my computer for the reminder list.
It seems like the only time I have an issue is when I try to update the reminders in ical on my computer.
I checked to see if the app store had a reminders only app - similar to what's on my iphone and the icloud site - but I couldn't find one.
Maybe the issue has to do with the fact that the iphone and icloud have a reminders list separate from the calendar - but it seems odd that the reminders in ical doesn't seem to have the same funcionality.

I am unable to import my reminders into ical. Everything I've read shows that I need to select "show reminders" under View in ical, but this isn't an option (It's not even that I can't select it. It's just not there). My reminders and calendar are all visible on icloud, just not visible together on my mac.

Sorry, no answer, but I have the same problem. I was trying to research why shared reminder lists between my wife and I, who have different AppleIDs, seemed to no longer work. We set them up originally using iCal on icloud.com and shared them per the instructions we'd found. They worked great, but seemed to be no longer working recently. I finally got around to trying to troubleshoot but in no way can get the Reminders list to show in iCal on the website anymore (just like you found). I was wondering if perhaps they were separating sharing functionality into the Reminders app but don't see it there either (nor even a Settings).
Note we still have the reminder lists on our devices (even the ones that were "owned" by the other), however when you use them, it's as if they were only your personal lists - they share only on your AppleID. Any help appreciated.

I totally agree. I just wasted .5 hrs trying to figure out how to manipulate and sync the reminders with the iCAl. Thanks for posting this thread online, I can stop wasting my time now. Apple, please change it back or make these apps sync.
Side note. I was creating my to do list and found the ability to asign a date by draging the task to the calendar in the bottom right. Then I discovered that I can drag that same reminder/to-do task into iCal and it will be created as an event. Would be great if I could simply sync the reminders to iCal instead of draging them over though. Then when I make the change in one the other can update with the next sync. This also prevents human error if I drag and drop the reminder onto the wrong date in iCal.

Seeing Reminders in iCal iOS7?

for some reason i am not finding any documentation on reminders and clicking "Reminders Help" pulls up a nothing available page.
does anyone know if it is possible to see Reminders that i have assigned a "reminder" date and time to in iCal?

that's a major bummer.
so - can you help me a bit more here? i am trying to knit things together a little more here and reminders has some interesting aspects to it (particularly the location alert on the phone).
also, i think i am taking your advice to go with Evernote which seems like it is a bit slicker than when i first tried it.
now i have notational velocity for sort of very data heavy lists, evernote for important lists and reminders for daily-weekly-yearly to do lists.
is there any way to get daily-weekly-yearly type /reminders/ into iCal so that i can actually see them? i mean, it seems very chaotic to have my alerts keyed to appointments in iCal but to have my to do list solely residing in Reminders - you know what i mean? i mean, i guess reminders will let me set an alert that i receive as a message (or an email or something - i forget) but it would be helpful to be able to see some kind of list of these at the very least and a /chronological/ list tied to a calendar would be wicked helpful for me...

ICloud: reminders in iCal all over the place, unable to sort

Since I have switched my .me account to iCloud I have been unable to auto sort reminders in iCal on my Mac by date as I used to be able to before the switch.
Before I had the option to sort by date when I clicked on the small triangle on the right side of "reminders". Now there are only all different icloud reminder categories shown.
Surprisingly, when Im using safari and login to ical in icloud reminders are sorted by date as I want it.
Any of you experiencing the same problem or knowing how to solve this issue?

I just talked to Apple Express service over this same problem. I went to the trouble of transferring my to-do list onto icloud Reminders - where each item can be given a priority ranking and where you are then given options for how to sort the list of Reminders you entered. I chose "by priority" of course, but you can also choose alphabetically, etc. However, of course, the point of doing all this is so that the Reminders are available on your actual device - my iphone. I then found that the Reminders list was an unsorted jumble on my iphone. Even when I tap out a Reminder on my iphone itself and choose a priority, the item remains at the bottom of the list as the last thing I typed in. Apple Express Support "explains" that the priority ranking and the sorting choices are "not supported". They offered me "an article" that explains this in detail. In other words, engaging with the Reminder function and choosing priorities and choosing sort orders is all just a cruel joke wasting your time. I would have been better off just printing off my Reminders list on paper and circling the high priority items in red ink. Oh - but you can't print it out either.

Do Reminders in iCal sync via iTunes?

I'm using Reminders in iCal 5.0.1 on OS X Lion. I sync my iCal data with the Calendar app on my iPhone, via iTunes (not iCloud). The weird thing is, none of my Reminders data is syncing, either from my iPhone to my iMac, or from my iMac to my iPhone.
Does the Reminders data only sync via iCloud?

This doesn't help you, but I just recently started having the same problem, I just upgraded my 3G to 4.0 in iTunes so I don't know if that has anything to do with it but nothing on my phones calendar will sync to iCal. Events in iCal sync to the computer just fine thought. I hope someone can help me figure this out!

Reminders in iCal works well and iPhone 4s has a pre installed app called Reminders but they do not sync together. Am I doing something wrong or is there a way to sync them?

Yes, they will sync from the iphone to ical via iCloud. Show the reminders list in iCal > View > show Reminders.
Visit the options in iCal > preferences.. > Advanced tab for options.
Now tell Siri on the iphone to "remind me to get a haircut in four weeks". It should appear in the reminders list on the right.
