Editing same project on multiple comps

How do you switch final cut projects between computers? I have FCP 5 on both computers and I take the project file copy it onto a hard drive along with the captured material-capture scratch-and I get an Error 41 message and the project doesn't load.
Please help.

the version issue is most likely the problem... updating the laptop now to a later version of fcp 5, kinda slipped my mind bc of the 5.1, 5.3 etc stuff. Thanks, this should be sorted out soon.

  • Simultaneously editing a project on multiple systems

We have two editors accessing the same project at the same time over our local network. Are there any pitfalls or landmines that we should be aware of?

I'd say you're asking for trouble to work on the same project simultaneously on separate computers. You'll be better off working in separate projects and then importing sequences from one into the another.

  • Editing same project on two computers

Sorry if this is elementary but I would appreciate advice.
I am cutting a project on my desktop. I did about 25% of it. I then transferred the project (all the files) to my laptop and cut some more when I was out of town. I did some new voice over on the project while cutting on my laptop.
I am now going back home and want to resume cutting on my desktop.
What files/folders do I have to transfer back to my desktop to keep on editing my latest cut? Do I just transfer the FCP file, and the folders marked Audio Render, Autosave Vault, Render Files, Thumbnail Cache Files, and Waveform Cache Files from my laptop and use these to replace the old ones on my desktop?
I'm using the same version of FCP 6 on both machines.
    Thanks.

The main thing you'll need to do is keep similar folder structures on both macs, transferring new/updated files as needed. That will help make reconnecting easier when passing the project file back and forth.
I normally save my project files to my Dropbox, which eases the process of moving project files between multiple machines on different networks.

  • Is there a way to work on the same project from multiple macs?

I was hoping to save a project that I was working in to the Cloud and then downlpad it to my other Mac. Can't seem to figure it out.

Not sure what your question has to do in respect to Apple networking, but if you're asking can you use your Xbox 360 on a wireless network (regardless of the router's manufacturer) to access different Xbox Live! accounts, then the answer is yes.

  • Can I edit one project on two computers with external drive and two copies of software?

I have two copies of premiere elements. One on IMac and one on Macbook. Video files on external drive. I want to be able to edit same project on both. I originally started the project on macbook but IMac doesn't see the exsisting project.  Can I do this? thanks for the help

    Thanks for the follow up.
The matter of the sign in/trial version has happened to me from time to time with Premiere Elements (I worked with Windows). I supply
the requested information and that usually takes care of that message for a long while.
What is the status of the issue now with the MacBook Pro to iMac projects? Is that matter restricted to just one project from MacBook Pro to iMac?
If so, on this particular one, did you try the Project Archiver/Copy Project workflow in MacBook Pro?
As for the error message...I am not a Mac user, and consequently I am not sure I am interpreting the following correctly. But take a look to see if any of it applies

  • Use a sequence template multiple times in same project

I have created a lower-third animated title and saved it as a sequence as it has sound. What I'm confused about it how I import that sequence and use it multiple times in the same project and change the content of the title for each sequence. If I import the sequence and change the title in one instance, it changes the title of all instances. I would like to use the sequence and be able to change each title. I have even tried copying sequences and renaming them but any editing still seems to affect the parent sequence file.
I know this must be really simple but I'm going round in circles here. Any pointers appreciated.

Take a look at this thread:
    style sheets for titles?
I'm not sure if an AFX Live text will bring over the audio, it is not something I have tried.

  • How can I create multiple versions of a video within the same project?

OK...this is a probably a very basic question but I'm not sure how to word it clearly.
How can I create multiple versions of a video within the same project? What I mean is that I have a bout 50 minutes of video and I want to make two DVDs using different clips from this original 50 minutes of footage. It would be a real pain to have to re-import the video AGAIN for the second DVD. I suppose I could drop anything I don't want to burn to DVD back into the clips pane but that would wipe out all my transitions wouldn't it? I want to save each project in their “raw” form so I can burn additional DVDs later otherwise I would just do them one at a time and not care about one of them being destroyed.
Wow...that was a mess. Does anyone understand what the heck I’m asking? I hope so.

How can I create multiple versions of a video within the same project?
You can't. You make separate projects using the same or different clips, segments, transitions, titles, etc. You can even duplicate the first project and then modify/make the desired changes in the duplicated project. Each project can then be burned as a different DVD or as different titles on the same DVD if there is enough room.

  • Use multiple themes in the same project?

I'm making a slideshow in iMovie 09. It consists of approx. 200 pictures. Those 200 pics are then broken down into 5 distinct groups. I've applied the Scrapbook theme to the first 40 pictures. I tried to apply a different theme (Filmstrip) to the next 30 pictures. When I did that, however, it changed the theme for the original 40 pictures to Filmstrip as well.
Am I able to use multiple themes within the same project? I don't think its possible.
Is my solution to make the 5 sections of the slideshow in iMovie 09 using a different theme for each section? I'd export as a movie file and then create the final slideshow that would consist of the 5 movies previously made (each with a different theme).
Thanks in advance. This project is due in 3 weeks.
    Martin

This is not possible in iMovie (to use multiple themes).
However, you can do this using your idea of joining multiple movies into one. You can do this with QuickTime Pro, or with MPEG Streamclip. [Here is a video Tutorial by venerable forum member Jon Walker|http://web.me.com/jrwalker4/QuickNotes/MPEGStreamclip/Entries/2008/5/25_Tutorial015.html] which shows the MPEG Streamclip option.

  • How can I edit the same photo in multiple LR catalogs?

    Hi Forumworld,
I would like to edit the same photo in multiple LR catalogs. Before you say "don't", there are many reasons why I'd like to do this. I am a working professional photographer and LR is one of the many tools in my workflow. I essentially want to organize my catalogs according to two different principles: once by year and once by theme. As in, a catalog each for 2014, 2015, 2016. But also one where I can group all of my wedding photos, for instance. I have several reasons for not throwing all of them together into one catalog.
I know that LR is essentially non-destructive, making this an uphill battle. But: if I do something like set all LR catalogs involved to Automatically Write Changes into XMP, should that a) be visible by any catalog and b) sync properly? As in: once the photo is imported to both Catalog A to Catalog B, can I edit it in A and see those changes - including developing, but also flagging etc. - in B? And vice-versa?
    Thanks for your help,
    Adam

    Hi All,
thanks for the various answers. I've considered most of what was written already, but the gem in all this that I was looking for was from John's answer:
You will also lose some of your work (xmp doesn't record flags, stacking, virtual copies, history steps...). So for one thing you specifically mentioned, flagging, you can't sync it across multiple collections
This is consistent with what I've experienced - I wanted to find out if there was a way to not loose some of my work. The goal was to find a way that everything would sync automatically & properly so that I would always access the identical image from various catalogs. This is what I thought XMP would do - but I experienced that it didn't and now I understand that it won't do it properly, regardless of the settings. Flags were exactly the piece of information I was missing when I tried this.
I am surprised that everyone is telling me to use one Catalog. I am sorry but I don't believe that it will scale - because that is not what I have experienced. When my LR4 catalog got to about 50,000 images, it slowed down dramatically.  Has something big changed in LR5? I have read many threads about this, most seem to say that already in LR4 it shouldn't have slowed down, but it did. No, my hard drive wasn't full. I just shoot a lot, mostly with a D800.
    Thanks,
    Adam

  • I would like to save footage to a hard drive and stiill be able ot edit the footage. I would like to reuse the cards on the  same project. Is this a sensible option. Camera JVC  GY-HM100

Hello I wonder if anyone would be able to help.
I have a JVC GY-HM100. I have footage from a ongoing project saved on SDHC cards. I want to save money by reusing the cards while i carry on working on the same project.  I wondered if I could save the footage from the SDHC card too a hard drive ; delete the footage from the cards and reuse them. would i still be able to edit the footage stored on the hard drive alongside the footage which will be imported straight from the camera..  I have heard that this camera works well with final cut pro but if the info is saved to a hard drive first and subsequent footage is straight from the camra and SDHC cards will it work or is it a false economy to reuse the cards.
    Hope that makes sense

  • What's the fastest way to edit SD and HD in the same project?

    Hi,
I'm running the latest version of FCP2 on the latest OS and I have dailies in both SD and HD that need to be cut into the same project. The HDV dailies are 1080p 23.98. We will be finishing in HD but that doesn't concern me because we're finishing this on a Flame. I have worked in SD and I've worked with HDV but always separately, never in the same project. I know that Apple ProRes settings are supposed to allow you to work in both in one project, however, I don't want to have to render every 5 seconds. Does that happen? OR will it allow me to play a cut straight down with no errors with both SD and HD footage in the same sequence?

I am going to kindly ask that you ignore what David is saying. The information he has given you to this point is incorrect.
You can capture HDV as SD. The camera or deck you are using will have an option to output the footage as DV. Mind you DV doesn't look as good as HD, and if your intent is an HD master, this would not be the way to go. Capture HDV as HDV...or heck, you can even capture it as ProRes via firewire:
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php
Just changing the settings to PRORES doesn't mean that you can now edit everything together. ProREs is a codec, just like DV and HDV. You can have your timeline set up to render HDV AS ProRes, but not sure what that does when you mix in SD on the same timeline.
Anyway, FCP is perfectly capable of mixing formats without rendering if you are running FCP 6. You will need faster drives for this than the normal firewire 400. And with HDV, you would be wise to use an Intel Mac, as HDV requires a bit of processing power. While I have been able to mix formats with my G5, I get a bright green render bar as opposed to a dark green bar on my MacPro.
OK, David did give one piece of true advice. You would be better off converting SD to HD before you edit. Or at least after you have locked picture (so you don't have to convert TOO much). Compressor does a really good job, and if you are capturing your HDV as ProRes, then upconverting the SD to ProREs will look fine. SD as HDV...ugh, I don't want to think about that.
Mind you, ProREs requires raided drives. DV is 3.6MB/s, and ProRes standard is 15MB/s...4 times that of DV. A raided FW800 drive like the G-Raid would be the lowest you could go, but I wouldn't count much on mixing formats with that. either an internal RAID (MacPro) or external eSATA Raid or mini SAS would be better. I like the CalDigit S2VR Duos...and this great desktop drive from MaxxDigital. SOnnet has good models...

  • Same photo in multiple projects?

Hi there. New Aperture user here so hope this isn't a stupid question. I was wondering if it's possible to have the same photo in multiple Projects? My understanding is that all photos are stored in my Aperture Library but the photos in the Projects are really just links to the photos in the Aperture Library. Is that correct?
I would like to have certain photos in multiple Projects, if possible. Thank you.
    -Keith

Thanks William. Here is a broader question/issue then.
Right now I have 20+ Projects in the AL. Then I have multiple .Mac Web Galleries based off of certain Projects.
Should I create one "Master" Project, and then create 20+ Albums under that Master Project? It seems like that is what I was going for when I created multiple Projects in the first place. Albums are just links to the photo in the Project, correct?
If I do that, will I have to re-do my .Mac Web Galleries (since they are linked to those Projects, right)?
Also, not quite sure I understand your last reply regarding copying the Album? Sorry.

  • Multiple users editing same site

Is it possible to have two mac user accounts edit the same or even multiple sites? Here's my scenario...
We have 1 iMac at home. My wife and I have separate logons or user accounts. I'd like for both of us to logon as our assigned accounts, open iWeb, and co-edit our iWeb sites. Of course, this also includes the ability to both publish updates to my single user .Mac account. I guess I could always have her logon with my account as a last resort. One would think a 'share' site option would exist in iWeb.
On a side note. If anyone is interested I have three personal domains running just fine on .Mac. Previously I was using a service from a company named No-IP to host multiple domains. I have since used the services from No-IP to redirect my domains and mask URLs to my .Mac account. I'd bet other domain registrars like GoDady also have the same features. The net is I can have 3 domains all working fine. See for yourself....

  • MULTIPLE  SCRATCH  DISKS FOR THE SAME PROJECT

Hello... I have a quick scratch disc question:
I have project that is running too low on scratch disk space. Can I use my boot drive (that has FCP on it) as an alternate scratch disk for the same project? Or does one project have to have the same scratch disk?
    Thanks!
    - TEXASFLOOD

    Hi Texasflood,
Having all the media in one place is preferable. Among other things when using multiple scratch disks you always have to make sure and double check that your logging bins are correctly set and that FCP is using the scratch disk you want.
What you could do is use Media manager to move the existing media to the new scratch disk with plenty of space (Media manager will reconnect all the media) and then capture your remaining 24GB in your new scratch disk.
Read about how to use Media Manager in the manual and checkout the paragraph in this linked article titled [Copying And Moving Projects|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/media_manager_fcp_4balis.html].
If you do use MM choose to copy and not move media, then for the piece of mind check first that everything is in place and working and only then delete the media in your older drive.
