Editing Screen in iPhoto.

Over the past two to three weeks performance has been steadily declining and has reached the point where whenever I double-click a thumbnail in "Pictures/Library" i only ever get a black screen.
Can anyone offer help with this problem please?

If rebuilding the library as MadisonP suggested in her post doesn't solve the problem try rebuilding the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I was flipping through photos and editing them with the crop feature selected. I pressed the arrow key to go to the next photo (still in edit screen) when iPhoto crashed. The wheel kept turning and it was frozen. I did Force Quit, and since then the program won't open. I tried reinstalling 8.1.2 again--still no luck.
I don't know what parts of the error message would be helpful, but here's the first bit:

  • Iphoto 11 has black edit screen

My iphoto 11 pictures are not visible in the edit screen and the slideshow will not run.  I've tried everything that I know and I'm at the point of deleteing iPhoto and do a clean install.  However, I'm not clear on the procedures and if I need to purchase iPhoto (it came pre-installed on my mid 2010 macbook pro).  Or should  I need do a clean install on my mountain lion?

    Next move:
    reinstall iPhoto.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • How to FILL the Screen in iPhoto 11

    I have a 27" iMac.
I want to FILL the screen in iPhoto like I can with the desktop feature to fill the screen.
The full-screen option in iPhoto only fills about 2/3 of the 27" monitor with aphoto in landscape [versus portrait] orientation. Less than that with portrait orientation. Obviously, the bigger, the better to see, and I would like to take advantage of my monitor size.

    Welcom3 to the discussions, smbc.
Although these options exist, an LCD monitor uses real pixels and is really intended to be run at the native (ie maximum) resolution. It will look pretty terrible otherwise.

  • Editing Freezes in iPhoto 6.0.3 Resolved

I was having serious issues Editing images using iPhoto 6.0.3 (the program would stop responding when clicking on various operations and required restarting), but found some areas where the program worked and areas where it didn't:
By going in to Preferences I set it to edit when I double-clicked an image with different actions via:
    In Main Window: Stops Responding
    In Separate Window: Stops Responding
    Using Full Screen: Works
    In (other app): Works
The same applied when right-clicking and image and selecting Editing methods from the menu. It also stopped responding when I clicked on the "Slideshow" menu and had to be restarted.
I tried all of the solutions offered in the several threads on this subject, including reinstalling 6.0.3 and OS X updates over the existing, but nothing worked.
What finally DID work was deleting the iPhoto app itself and reinstalling it from disk and then I did NOT upgrade it to 6.0.3. I looked at the 6.0.3 update details, improvements in photocasting and sharing etc. and decided they were not issues I had been previously having and so I don't feel that I need that particular update. I'll see what future updates offer and update if it seems to fix or improve anything substantial at that time, leapfrogging what I consider to be a BUGGY 6.0.3 update for a number of users and see where I am then.
For now, after updating and then re-importing my last import of images that I had concerns about, everything is working fine. I can see no features in 6.0.3 that are not in 6.0.

    Neil:
iPhoto has the library name in the title bar for me. Started with V6 and still does so with 6.0.3. A couple of times witb 6.0.2 it seemed to not do that but then started up again. Didn't do anything to try to correct it but maybe some of my permissions repairs for other issues helped. You might give it a try.

  • Where's the toolbox and other editing features in iPhoto?

    Hello!
When I select a photo to edit on my iPad Air in iPhoto, it only has "rotate", "enhance", "filter" and "crop" at the bottom of the screen.  I do not see the toolbox or other editing features such as the "brushes" or the "rotate compass".  How can I see the other editing features on iPhoto?  Thanks for the help!

    And the Photos.app:

While I was tranfserring photos message came up that home disk was full and iphoto kept quitting? Please help
What part of "full" is not clear?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.

  • I can't get elements 10 to edit photos from Iphoto?

I have not been able to edit photos from iphoto in elements 10. When I press the edit key in iphoto the edit program opens in elements10 but no photo to edit appears.
The Preference selection to Advanced for Editing has elements 10 editor selected. Why is it not accepting the image to edit?

Are you sure? You are using the PSE file inside the support folder and not the file at the top level of the PSE 10 folder in applications as your external editor? I've never known of any other reason for your photo not to appear in the PSE editor. Does the editor open?
Usually this happens when you've set the welcome screen to automatically open the editor so that you don't see the welcome screen anymore. Did you ever change that setting in the PSE welcome screen?

  • Edit screen won't show me my pictures to edit.  Full screen goes black.

My first mac. Trying to import pictures from my external drive (FAT32) I imported all my photos, all looks fine, however, when I try to edit one, It takes me to the edit screen with all the photos in the event on top, but it doesn't show the photo I'm trying to edit. I even tried to look at photos fullscreen, and I get the black screen with the top and bottom bars, but no photo on the screen, and after a second, it just all goes black. Interesting thing though, is that I can play a slide show. Has anyone ever had this issue, any help for this newb will be greatly appreciated.

It could be a permissions thing. Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the option to repair permission of the library.
    Post back with the results.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Edit screen is blank

Suddenly I can't edit photos in iPhoto. When I click on a thumbnail, all I get is a blank, black screen. Anyone know what's going on? I've made no changes in software, etc. It just worked one day, and the next day not.
I can edit in Photoshop elements if I chose that in my editing preferences, so I know the photos are there. I don't want to always edit in Elements though. Repairing permissions didn't help.
    Thanks,
    Paul

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. *Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. *Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. *A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. *A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. *A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *If none of these help*:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • In the edit screen when switching between photos, it starts clear and then after a second, it becomes a little blurry.  Any one else experiencing this?

In Iphoto, when in the edit screen, when the photo first comes on it appears clear, then after about a second, it blurs a bit which makes it hard to edit.   This does not happen when previewing each photo, only when editing.
    Anyone else have this issue.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Black Screen in iPhoto '09

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and now get when I attempt to edit/review an individual photo all I get is a black screen inside iPhoto. The thumbnails are correct and when I upload the pics to the internet they are fine there, also.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. With the black screen is there an "!" in it? Run the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select option #5 to rebuild the database file.
    Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: *This leaves your current library untouched for further attempts at fixing if this doesn't succeed.* It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
    Fix #3
Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

    UDPATE:
Spoke with Express lane, and issue was escalated.  Kudos to the support guys that handled this one (Brian and Yi).  Went through everything in detail and took all the crash dumps off the iphones and ipads to send to engineering.
After backing up the contacts, the recommendation was to delete all contacts in  iCloud.  Doing that caused my iCloud to crash (in the browser), so more crash dumps were sent to apple.
Eventually got all contacts deleted, then did a resync.  Looks like IOS devices are coming back to life and syncing again.
Also, Outlook iCloud connector has just been updated to ver 1.0.1 so i installed that on their recommendation.
    BOTTOM LINE workaround:
    1. Backup contacts
    2. Delete contacts in iCloud
    3. Delete accounts on IOS devices
    4. Recreate accounts on IOS devices.
Hoping a real root cause can be found and real fix implemented.  This has caused me to doubt the stability of iCloud, so i will procees with caution.

How can I edit photos in iPhoto in Photoshop Elements?  I select PE in iPhoto preferences but they stay in iPhoto for editing.

Here's something you can try with a copy of your current library.
1 - go to iPhoto's Events preference pane and set the auto split option to 1 day per even.
2 - go the the Events mode, select all Events.
3 - go to the Events menu  and and select Autosplit Selected Events.
which will give you an event for each day.
4 - again select all events (although it might be better do to fewer at a time) and export them to your desired destination via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  menu option with the following settings:
The workflow above will produce a folder for each days photos with the date as the folder's title.
