Editing speed still painful..

hello list, back after a long absence touring australia and italy, yes I know.. it's tough..
anyway, so I'm back in the studio doing vocal sessions and editing, now on logic 7.2, still on a dual G5 2 gig.
maybe I was hoping for something out of the ordinary, but the editing speed is still a complete nightmare since logic 7 and it is now officially starting to drive me nuts. like many others, I have written to logic feedback about this but seemingly to no avail. what I am talking about btw is the fact that cutting, grabbing region starts/end to drag, fading and generally any kind of interaction with the arrange window is just too plain unresponsive for anyone that could call themselves a skilled editor. if you are one you will know what I mean. it may only be a fraction of a second to register that you have clicked on something, but this is just not good enough, because if you are like me and your hands move fast using a combination of mousing and key commands, you wind up being 3 or 4 edits ahead of logic before you realise that the interface has not reacted in time and you have accidentally dragged a region to who knows where or engaged an unwanted loop on something.
grr.
the annoying thing is that it was never this way on logic 6 and earlier, even on slow machines, even on OS9. interface responsiveness was close to immediate, I could work at full speed. now I find myself cursing, taking a deep breath and consciously slowing myself down lest I accidentally have to command-z to undo yet another botched cut... all this after a holiday..
rant almost over.. have noticed people are on intel coded logic now. any fast guys out there that know what I am talking about that are on intel yet, is there any sign of an improvement?? ie, getting back the responsiveness we had pre 7? it would be good if that were the case, but I'm not hopeful because it doesn't seem to be anything to do with a faster CPU or faster graphics (just got a new G5 with a bigger/faster graphics card here, no difference).
back to logic feedback I go...

Hey tbird,
I was wondering what happened to you - now I know. Welcome back.
I know what you mean about this point. I actually think there have been improvements in this area since 7.0, but still... it is a drag (no pun intended).
Starting with a new session it seems like response is 60 ms for and edit in the arrange... but those numbers aren't proven. Just a guess.
High numbers of events, big plugins and high number of objects in the arrange really make this worse. You have mentioned it could be because of the contextual cursor's status. It very well could be. I think you know Logic well enough to know how the plugs and events impact editing.
New features, new OS, new processor, new company, more plugs, it seems like the growing pains are still hitting users. 7.2 does seem like (aside from the UniBin) a good step towards higher number of events, more stable, reliable, less bugs in general. Has been very solid for me, less problems. Also just keeping everything up to date, Templates, objects really helps. Yes, I have had to adapt my workflow several ways to accomodate Logic. Not just with editing... I think most of us know how to make a ducker... And as far as development for Logic I am really more interested in reliability, responsiveness, handling of plugs - while making Logic work optimally on OS X... 7.2 is, for me, a big improvement in that regard. I spend way too much time moving things around, maintaining (insert G4 joke) - I am not convinced it is my computer.
So tbird - here's another yea vote as this is a step back.
Cheers,
J

  • How can I edit a still image so that I can float it over the video?

I would like to edit a still image so that I can float it over the video - How would I save the image in Photoshop so that just the image and not the background can be imported into Final Cut and the footage behind it still shows up?
    Thanks

You need to either create an Alpha channel or cut out the area of interest and paste it into a transparent Photoshop document. You can save the former as PSD, TIFF or PNG. Save the latter as TIFF with transparency enabled (shows up in TIFF Options at step 2 of the save dialog).

Is the audio sync bug (related to custom clip speeds) still present in iMovie 11? I encountered it in 09 and was wondering if it was fixed in the latest version.

    I haven't encoutered since iMovie '09.
You can always call Applecare as ask if there have been reports to engineering.

  • Edit one still image in PS and entire timeline needs re-rendering in FCP6

I've been using FCE 3.5 and FCP5 for quite some time. My projects usually have a large number of still image pct files in them. Before changingg to FCP6 (because I'm working on a 1080p project) when i would need to edit a still image that was already in my time;line, I would open it in Photoshop, make the changes, save it, and when I returned to FCP 5 or FCE3.5, only that portion of the timeline where the item appears would need to be re-rendered. But with FCP6, even if the edited image is only in aa small part of the timeline, the entire timeline is red and needs to be re-rendered. Any idea what is causing this major problem? I never change the dimensions of the file or the type. I might just adjust brightnesss ro do some in-painting, etc.

Cick anywhere in your timeline. Type Command + 0 {zero} to see your sequence settings. Either report those settings or post a screen shot here.

  • Video Editing: Speed up selection of a video, how?

Hello All,So I need to take a long video file, speed up the boring bits in the middle and slow it back down when the interesting bit happens, I know that sounded dodgy. So how do I do this? I have never done anything like this before so software recommendations and reading material would be greatly appreciated./back storyI have a iPhone 5s that will go to sleep mode and if you leave it alone for some time, it will refuse to wake up unless you press Home & Power at the same time and hold for a few seconds. I have tried returning it to provider and Apple and they both say that nothing is wrong with the phone. Now I have a ~40 minute video where you can see the screen goes off and 40 minutes in me trying to wake the damn thing up. I need to speed that middle bit up.../end backs tory*edit*For interests sake I have tried a factory reset but...

if you still have that 'bricked' 5550 printer, or one hung because of RFU update failures, try this:
I had the same issue after a power outage, (thunderstorm went through area causing power to drop off and on several times in short time frame, catching the printer in its 'restart' )firmware got damaged so printer refused to run. (basically a brick). I finally found a solution. ( I am running windows 7 ultimate x64)
I found and downloaded a firmware image, then used HDDRAWCOPY
(hddrawcopy makes an exact copy of the source file.)
to copy the firmware to my CF card, (you have to pull the formatter and pull the CF card).
I used a USB card reader to format my CF card and then ran HDDRAWCOPY to write the downloaded firmware to it.
reinstalled the CF card and then put formatter board back in my 5550dtn, it started right up, and is now running...

  • Variable tag editing speed

    Hey gurus
I have been editing large numbers of tags throughout my music collection and I noticed that some changes to tags are written almost instantaneously while others take a surprisingly long time. My music in in mp3 format for the most part, and the variation in write speed occurs for the same tag type e.g. album title.
What could be the reasons for this variability? File formats? Different ID3 versions? Sometimes it takes atrociously long to complete the task for files of average size (<10MB). I do also have much larger files that are 2-hour long sets I have downloaded, and it can take up to half an hour to simply add a single piece of coverart to as few as twenty files. Is the entire file scanned before the tags are edited? This might explain the delay during edits to these big files, though it seems deplorably inefficient for the entire file to be read when only the tags need to be. It still doesn't explain while some very average mp3 files take much much longer to have tags edited than others with seemingly no difference between them other than the song itself...
Perhaps someone with experience in how iTunes actually edits tags might have some insight to add to this. I can't imagine I'm the only one with this problem...
    Thanks very much!

that's how "non destructive" editing works, isn't it? The actual video files are not moved around by the >editing?
That's the idea. Files are not duplicated.
Editing tells the Scratch Disc files what to play, how much and when plus any effects etc.

  • Editing large stills in HD

I need to edit a sequence with dramatic pans and zooms of stills that need to be in DVC Pro HD 1080i 60. This means that my images have to be very large in order to not have a pixelated look when closely zoomed in on. No worries there, got the big tiff files.
The problem is while editing in FCP 5, even with a super fast SATA II harddrive connection, moving these massive images, and making transitions and putting filters on the images lags drastically because there so big, though they need to be in order to get those great zooms, pans and so on in HD.
Is there a way to edit these large stills in a smaller project file, or offline, with smaller image sizes, and then convert it to a larger project with the larger images? Any ideas? Thanks,
    -Pat

Ok - I'll admit I've never had to use an edl - but that's likely to be your sol'n to this - staying in fcp.
Save out your stills in dv size - make a new dv proj (16:9, I guess just for appearance sake) work in dv & get everything the way you want, filters etc; - and I'll have to let someone else lead you thru' the next bit.
But as I understand it you export out your edl (or is xml the way to go ? dunno) then bring that into your hurky big project. The manual will have this covered I'm sure. never read that bit ....
edit: ah here you go to start.

    Offline/Online Editing Workflows
The offline/online editing process in Final Cut Pro consists of the following steps:
Step 1: Set up and capture media at low resolution
You can log and capture your footage directly to low-resolution, offline-quality media files. Alternatively, you can log and capture your footage at full resolution, and then use the Media Manager to create low-resolution media files for offline editing. The latter method is useful if you want to have both full-resolution and low-resolution media for two different systems simultaneously.
Step 2: Edit with offline-quality (low-resolution) media files
You edit just as you would with any other footage. Because you are using low- resolution footage, you can fit much more footage on your hard disk, and use a portable PowerBook editing system.
Step 3: Create a sequence for recapturing media at full resolution
When you finish editing your low-resolution sequence, you use the Media Manager to create a copy with full-resolution settings. For this step, you choose the Create Offline option in the Media pop-up menu.
Important: It is important to understand the difference between clips and media files when performing this step. This option only creates a new sequence with new sequence clips at full-resolution, but no new media files are created. Once you have a
sequence with full-resolution settings, you can recapture your media files at full- resolution. Also, the word “offline” in the Create Offline option actually refers to creating clips whose media files are offline, and doesn’t actually relate to the offline/online editing process. For more information, see “Clips Described By Their Properties” on
    page 31.

  • Editing multiple stills in the viewer?

I have an animation comprised of a few thousand still png files with transparent backgrounds, overlaid on top of a gradient within FCE. I need to be able to edit all of these uniformly, in the same way, using the "motion" tab in the viewer, without having to go through them one by one. Is there any way to mass edit that number of frames, or give them the same setting, so they appear in the right place on screen?
I tried putting them all into a separate sequence and using that sequence overlaid on top of the gradient, which lets me edit only one file, but when it renders there's some bad artifacts around the png files and it looks blurry.
    Any ideas?

That was the trick I needed, thank you!!!

  • Speed Still Slow After Formal Complaint

Looking for a mod to pick this up ...
I raised a formal complaint after having no BB for a week recently. Once the issue was (allegedly) "fixed" and we at least had access again I agreed to drop the complaint. However, our speed has still not gone over 22mb even though I'm on Infinity2. IP profile is currently 21.66mb and speed is below that.
I want to raise another formal complaint against appalling service provision, and frankly fraud in charging so much for a 20mb link.
I need a contact to raise a proper formal complaint and get my line issues (going for 2 years now) resolved.

Well, I am in the same boat! Two years ago when I took infinity I was achieving the BT suggested speed of 24 Mbps, it lasted for a few weeks then started dropping. Since I have complained and on two occasions when the speed haps dropped to less than 16 Mbps BT have sent and engineer to check the installation etc. In doing so he connects a device to my modem and Hey Presto! the speed increases back to 24 Mbps. Longest it stays there for is a month and almost as though it is calander triggered, it starts to drop.
Complained again yesterday, the BT suggested solution was for me to have a new modem and that would definately fix my speed issue and restore it back to 24+Mbps (all this is quoted verbatim) but, I would have to contract for another 18 months!. BT will not fix the issue first though as they have now added a note to my account that 12 to 17 Mbps is the best I can get. However, using the BT website and looking at the upgrade links the line check suggests 24 to 30 Mbps - wholly misleading I think.
Also as part of yesterdays nonsense with tech support and a reset of the hub FON is not active and calling them today it is as though I am talking a foreign language - I am being asked to go and find another hotspot!!
Hancop, how did you go about making your formal complaint?

  • Protecting a pdf from editing while still allowing redactions

I am using Adobe XI Pro and am familiar with securiting and applying protection to the document.  However, I want to be able to restrict editing for the user I send the document to, but still allow them to make redactions if necessary (i.e. removing our logo or commission amounts) in case they need to send it to their customer without that private info showing.  I just don't want them to be able to edit the original content.  Any thoughts?

If you apply a Change Password and allow annotations, then the best you can achieve is marking the words and images for redactions.  You CANNOT actually apply the redactions that have been marked until the Change Password is supplied to remove the Security and then you or another can apply the redactions.

  • Howto speed up painfully slow computer???

I have a 12" powerbook g4 that was the last model before the intel macs. it has a 1.5 Gig processor and 512 megs of ram. it has an 80 gig HD with 15 gigs free.
it is painfully slow. i don't run a lot of apps at the same time, i have restarted, i have repaired disk permissions and run disk utility. i also ran onyx.
my wife has a pre-intel ibook that has less power but runs significantly faster running essentially the same apps.
how can i speed up my computer?
    thank you.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • My Speed STILL restricted

    First off "Hi everyone."
Couple of questions so If I should post them seperatly I do apologise.
My Speed is still being restricted for being a "heavy user" back in July between 4Pm and 24:00 ( well 24:05 usually)
Any ideas when its going to stop being restricted. jumped on the forum and had a look around and apparently as I'm on Option 3 my usage 'allowance" has gone up to 300gig a month now, so guessing i'm not still being penalised for 'going over'.
Just watched my download speed jump at 00:05 so know its still restricted
Do I need to call someone or some specific department to get it sorted out ?
And Question 2. I read mention here on the forum of a "BT Usage Monitor" can someone tell me where it is please.
    Thanks in anticipation
B.T. I'm sure plenty of others have said it already but it would have been cool if you could have let everyone know about the new allowance and BT usage monitor without having to find out from the forum

  • Poor network speed with 1st generation time capsule and multiple airport express 5Ghz. My network speed slows to a crawl when not close to the time capsule. I get the range that I need, but the speed is painfully slow.

    Hello,
I have a first generation time capsule running 802.11n (b/g compatable) and the airport expresse's are the newer 5ghz models. I have 3 airport express's and I have the range that I need. I can run the time capsule using 802.11n 5ghz, but I loose the range and can't connect to all of the airport express's. My computers and mobile devices run 802.11n. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase the network speed. Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Thank you

Unfortunately, you are experiencing one of the downsides to 5 GHz. That's because the higher frequency 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals.
After all, you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain potential speed but in return, you must give up penetration power and distance capability.
In order to work well, 5 GHz signals need to almost have a line-of-sight relationship between devices. Unless you can achieve this, you will do much better to leave the Time Capsule running at the 802.11n (b/g compatible) 2.4 GHz Radio Mode and allow the Express devices to "extend" that network.
As for the location of the AirPort Express devices in an exended network, that is critical for best performance. That's because the Express can only "extend" the quality and bandwidth of the signal that it receives. Post back if you need a few more tips on how to find the best location for the AirPort Express devices.
Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Unfortunately, no.

  • Editing Speed dependant on Display Resolution?

A basic question. I've always preferred using my EMacs at 1280 x 960 resolution but I've just recently, since my video project has gotten so large and complex, been trying to find a way to be able to edit quicker, with things hanging up less. Does having the monitor resolution set at something lower like 1024 x 768 free up some of the processor so it can work faster on the editing, etc.??

Adding more RAM is a simple and reasonably inexpensive way of improving performance.
You don't say how much you have - I boosted mine from 256MB to 768MB very cheaply from Crucial and noticed a valuable improvement. (Don't tell me you already have 2GB !)
Also an external Firewire HD can ease the strain on your eMac, reducing fragmentation etc.
    Ian.
