Editing Symbols

How do you edit the colors of the individual elements of symbols? Is there a way to do any editing once the objects have been added as a group as a symbol?

Edit > Edit colors > Recolor art
doesn't automatically create a copy of the original symbol, you have to take care of that.

Illustrator CC editing symbol goes infinite loop, how to get out of?

Hey all
I'm editing a fairly complex illustrator symbol instance (its a world map vector), and now I've gone to go back to the original artboard but for whatever reason the program can't get out of a PROGRESS / SAVE modal popup box and the progess bar fills, goes off screen then comes back on screen and fills again. (I can still see the symbol instance in the background and are not back at the original artboard yet.
Any way to get out of this without having to CTRL + ALT + Delete and close the program and restart?
I'm on WIndows 7

How to edit symbol without dimming the rest?

I can't figure out if this is possible and how to do it on the same window. Illustrator is not very good with the display options and real time updating changes on a new window.

I guess I didn't explain better what I want. I whish I can edit a symbol in context and see real time update on all of its instances.
I also don't mind editing the symbol in it own window if I can see real time update on the artwork in another window. So far trying this with creating a new window of the artwork doesn't appear to work that way.

Ctrl+E edits symbol, how to do I back out with key shortcut?

I'm trying to find out how to do this. If I select a symbol and hit "Ctrl + E" I'll go within the object to edit it. I'd like to learn of the keyboard shortcut to back outwards (once I'm finished) so I don't have to click within the hierarchy path supplied at the top of the canvas.

The same command, Ctrl-E should work to get you back to the document.
But if you have to click to select, wouldn't it be easier to just doubleclick instead. Gets you to the same place with just one hand. Similarly, when you edit that way, you can still see the objects in the background which can be helpful, and doubleclicking off the object returns you to the stage.

Editing symbol from stage

I'm a very new newbie, so please forgive me if I don't use
quite the right words to describe my problem. I'm going through the
lynda.com tutorial on Flash Pro 8, and I'm in the chapter on
symbols. The instructor describes two ways of accessing the symbol
in order to edit it when you are in stage view: double click on the
symbol in the library (which worked just fine for me) or
double-click on the symbol on the stage (which did nothing for me).
Is this strange? Is it worrisome? Am I going to miss all the fun
because I can't do this? Has anyone else encountered this? Does it
work for anyone else who uses a Wacom tablet?

It should work - is your Edit bar open? It is located a cross
the top of the
timeline (depending on version). It will show you a bredcrumb
trail of where
you are in whatever symbol in relation to the stage. Window
> Toolbars >
Edit Bar.
Verify after double clicking you can see that you have
entered Edit in Place
mode. This has nothing to do with using a Wacom or not.

Editing symbol in Illustrator cs3 sends the result miles off artboard?

When I enter "edit mode" of an illustrator CS3 symbol (to be used in flash), upon exiting edit mode, the symbol leaves the art board only to be found far away in the upper left corner of the document. Moreover, this cannot be undone!
Any thoughts?

CS4: How can I keep a scaled Symbol from returning to 100% when I edit it?

I have several instances of a symbol on my artboard. Each of these instances have different scales/sizes. I'm trying to edit one of the larger instances by double-clicking it and entering isolation mode, so that I can make some minor adjustments to the positioning of the objects and paths within that symbol so that it's not covering my other content. However, as soon as I do this, the symbol "shrinks" back down to its small original size... which makes it almost impossible to judge what the symbol will look like, because as soon as I exit isolation mode, it'll return to the larger size and then visually I can see if I guessed right.
Example, I have a "TREES" symbol. Within the TREES symbol, there are 3 individual tree shapes. I want to move the right tree a little farther right, but not too far right, because it'll cover some other content. However, as soon as I double-click the TREES symbol to edit it, the symbol shrinks so now, I can't really tell how far I need to more the right tree. Is there a preference, or a method of creating a symbol to keep it from doing this when I try and edit it?
Also, I noticed, in the above example, as I move the tree to the right, when I exit isolation mode, it appears that the entire symbol has changed position... so now the other trees aren't in the same place (visually) that they were before. It seems as though Illustrator has centered ALL the trees in the symbol, instead of leaving the left 2 trees alone and just moving the right tree farther right. (Completely opposite of the way Flash edits symbols) Is there a way to keep this from happening as well?

If I convert (break) the symbol instance into a normal group, then any changes I make to that instance will not be reflected in the other instances that have been placed in different areas of the artboard.

Editing a Symbol's Text

Im trying to edit the text of a symbol so that it applies to all instances where the symbol appears. However, when i TRY to edit the symbol, the new text appears ON TOP of the old text instead of replacing it like I want! Very frustrated because im sure its something simple. Any help would be appreciated.
See? It just types over the old stuff but I want to replace the first word. It doesn't even automatically select the appropriate font.

I think I know what you did you clicked on the symbol on the artboard with the text tool and then started typing which only added text on top of the symbol.
Take the selection tool (black arrow) and double click on any instance of the symbol to enter isolation mode you wil see a prompt telling you you are about to edit a symbol and it will effect ll instances of that symbol.
Do not, I repeat do not break the link to the symbol.
Once you are in isolation mode you wuill be able to edit the text of the symbol once you edit the text and you are satified then use the selection tool to click anywhere away from the text or other parts of the symbol to exit isolation mode.
Al instances of the symbol will be updated.
You can also use the symbol panel at the bottom of the panel there is an icon that when hoovered over wil tell you that it is the edit symbo tool click on the symbol you want to select it then click onthe edit symbol icon to also enter isolatiobn mode for that symbol.
Then you do the same as above.
But make certain you do not break the link to the symbol this is the wrong advice. Keep the symbol linked.

My user account on my MacBook Pro isn't giving me the option of 'edit picture'. How can I solve this problem?

So basically, I recently got a MacBook Pro, and the first thing I did when I got it, was set up my user account. However, I soon noticed that the only options for a user account icon were icons that my MacBook came with (flowers, footballs, piano etc.) or if I took a picture with my webcam. I know that I'm supposed to have an option of selecting a picture from my iPhoto library etc. but my mac isn't letting me do that. It's not giving me the option of 'edit picture' which I know directs you to your photo library.
<---- see, the 'edit' button doesn't highlight unless I click on a picture.

You don't have to do it that way. All you need do is click on the image then click on this icon:

How to delete a symbol without clicking on it?

Hi, my fla file probably is corrupted.
i am using flash cs5, and i have 2 symbols, in the fla.. that if they are clicked (in the library menu), they make flash crash instantly.
then... how i do to remove them, without clicking on them? (if i click, also with the right button of the mouse.... flash crash).
i want to delete those 2 symbols, but i cannot click on them, in flash library menu.
How can i do?

in flash, look for the drop-down percentage box (where you select a % and it shows your stage at that size). to the left of it is an icon for editing symbols. if you click it, it will show a list all your library items and when you click on an item, flash puts you in edit mode for that symbol.
if you can get into edit mode for those two symbols, delete everything inside of those symbols... especially any TLF text areas
if all else fails, make a brand new fla and drag your library items from one fla to the other, leaving the two corrupt items alone

Bridge 2.1.1.9 stopped showing ACR edits/crops in thumb and preview

Bridge has started having a new problem, intermittently but frequently, in that it will not consistently show the ACR edits when it displays thumbnails or previews.
Specific example I am looking at now. Raw Nikon D300 NEF, open in ACR, crop and adjust various settings, hit "DONE". Return to bridge, and after a couple seconds it shows the edits. All as expected.
A few minutes (or seconds or hours) later, the edits disappear from bridge, from either the preview, the thumbnail, or (usually) both, and the display reverts to the original NEF.
If I open it again in ACR the edits are there, remembered, correct.
Stranger still, if I scroll the thumbnails so that the selected image is not visible, then scroll back, for about 2 seconds the correct edited, cropped thumbnail appears, then it flicks back to the unedited NEF. the preview does not change (and is wrong).
I have cleared this cache, cleared the entire cache - no impact. I have deleted the XMP and started over, it works for a bit, then may come back, or moves to some other picture (some are working correctly, some not).
It DOES show the little crop/edit symbol above the thumbnail, it is just not using it.
And it is not consistent, I have two shots in the same directory. One is showing a correct thumbnail and when I click on it then un-corrected preview. One is showing neither one correct.
Even weirder, the one with the incorrect preview, if I use the magnifier, it shows the correct version (i.e. post ACR) while the unmagnified version is the original NEF.
I've tried high-quality preview, and not.
I've tried software rendering and not.
I have rebooted and checked and all updates are applied.
This has just started happening, I have hundreds of prior D300 shots that worked fine, just the last couple of days. And it works fine for SOME shots now, just not all (I'd say about 50/50 of new shots). Except so far I have not seen it happen for any prior NEF's, just the ones I have downloaded in the last few days. And I have updated nothing on the system, at least not knowingly (Adobe stuff sometimes updates automatically, but I noticed nothing).
Any ideas?

Stacy, I have found from experence that sometimes we are not seeing the same things, or understanding the same words. So don't intend to put down your skills but try this and see if we are on the same page. I don't have CS4, just CS3 so my pictue may be a little different. Am using NEF from Dx40 camera.
When image opened in ACR with double click, or right click, across the bottom of the ACR screen I have the following options; save image, open image, cancel, done, no OK option.
Doing edits and clicking Done saves the edits. Save image has option to save in different formats.
Copy one of your NEF images to a test folder. Then go to Edit/develop settings/ clear settings. This will delete all edits. Delete the XMP file. Then do an drastic edit in ACR, like changing exposrue to make it very dark, click Done.
When you go back to bridge and click on NEF image the Preview Panel should show the edits. I can not see edits in my thumb as I use Quick thumbnails.
Waht do you see in preview window? The original or an edited NEF? Do you have a circle symbool in the upper right hand corner of thumb indicating an edit?

Editing a Web site SWF file

Funky, allow me to try again. right words are difficult for
me come by but I try.
I have a Web site that uses a 260K Swf file for presentation.
My original designer is no longer available.
I am trying to make changes to update some of the info on the
site. I have been able to update jpeg images
in photo gallery which is an external xml file to and opened
by the swf file. additionally I have updated some of the
images within the "master" swf file using Eltima decompiler
software.
I am now try to update some of the Static Text files within
the "master" swf file.
I am using a MAC with the Eltima Decompiler and CS3 Flash.
This is my first attempt to update/edit
Static text.
If you could quide me toward a correct course, I would
appreciate it.
I open the "master" swf in eltima and extract only "text" I
am not doing anything with images, buttons etc.
I convert that ouput into Fla. A "master"_conv_fla file is
created along with a folder called text that has multiple
Static Text xx.swf file within. The fla file opens in adobe
but doesnt contain the file I want to update.
using Eltima I open the Static text 53.swf, perform an
extract and then convert that to a Static text 53_conv.fla file
that opens in adobe.
Here I am lost. I have used trial and error to get a
response. I might mention that the original designer used Adobe 6.
With the Static text 53_conv.fla file open in adobe I seem to only
be able to make changes when I click on
Edit Symbols. I make changes and do a Save As so that Adobe 8
is used. I assume Adobe 9 might not allow my file to function.
After saving I Export the result back to my computers texts
file. That file then appears as Static text 3.swf.
instead of Static text 53.swf
It has the results I want but I don't know how the make the
changes take in the Static text 53.swf file.
I am not even sure the steps I have taken above are even
correct. It was all I could do to get any result.

I'm a relatively new convert to a Mac and I have to say that this is the first time I have been disappointed by my choice.
I have quite a few webs that I maintained with FrontPage and now I will have to drop them because I can't take the time to re-do each page within the sites just because I can't import the html coding into iWeb.
It would be nice if the authors could make iWeb a bit more friendly in that regard. Even if only the basic layout, text, images and/or image holders could be imported, that would help.

Add "make unique symbol" button and context menu option

I often want to make a variation of an existing symbol that is already positioned on the page. Unless I'm missing something, the steps are to duplicate existing symbol in the symbols palette, then replace the selected symbol instance, using the "replace symbol instance" in the Control Bar. Why not have a context menu option "make unique symbol" that automatically replaces the instance with new, unique symbol? I'd also like to see "Edit Symbol" added to the context menu. I'm hovering over the symbol, why should I have to go find the "edit symbol" button? I realize I can double-click the instance, but this does not work in all cases, such as when the direct select tool is active.
If you've used SketchUp, you know where this idea comes from.

No, I want to make a new, unique symbol of an existing symbol instance. If I choose "break link" from the context menu or symbols palette, the artwork is no longer a symbol and after editing, must converted to a symbol using the symbols palette. This requires several, unnecessary steps. At the very least, I'd like to see "Make new symbol" added to the context menu. If you're a SketchUp user you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Seems incidental, but AI's method is inefficient.

"copy and paste text within symbol" bug

I am sure this has been discussed, but have not found it using search.
Follow these steps to demonstrate a "Symbol Text" bug (CS5 through CC 2014):
Create Symbol containing editable text.
Edit symbol by selecting and copying a portion of text at "Character" level in the Symbol
Paste as point or paragraph text.
The result is: ALL the text from the Symbol is pasted into the Point or Paragraph text object, NOT just the portion that was copied.
This bug has been present in AI at LEAST since CS5 and probably before. I'd sure like to see it fixed.

Not able to edit trellis

Hi all,
after patching OBIEE 11.1.1.6.0 upto 11.1.1.6.2 I am not able to edit trellis.
Also, if I create a new analysis, choose the needed columns, go to the results and want to create a new view(trellis), it's not working.
So, I need to go to the results, create a new trelli and then to choose the columns.
This is really strange. Does anyone of you has an idea what the reason for this behavior could be?

yes the "edit-symbol" is available there, but it doesn't work.
A popup, which says "Access denied(EditView)" pops up!
I will patch OBIEE upto 11.1.1.6.7 and hope those bugs will be fixed than!
