Editing text in Elements

I've made a spelling error, is there anyway I can go back in and correct it once Ive committed the text box?

Sure, as long as you've only committed and not simplified the text layer. Double click the T symbol in the layers panel to make your text active and you should be able to edit it. But if you simplified it, you need to start over, since it's not text anymore.

I am unable to highlight or edit text.

Click the choose button under the section for additional external editor and navigate to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12
Then select the application (click image below)

• Editing text in elements 11

I purchased a well designed sample resume and opened it with my elements 11 to edit the text. But I do not know how to. Can somebody help me in this?

Open the layers pallet (Window >> Layers) to ensure you don’t have a flattened image. If the T layer is visible click on it (highlight the layer) and with the T tool selected you should be able to click on the main image to edit it.

• Editing text in photoshop elements

I would like to edit text in a band promo poster created in photoshop. When I open the file in photoshop elements, all I see is the main photograph of our band, I can't find the text. Any suggestions on where to look ? All I want to do is change our gig date and location information. Thanks, Tom R.

Thanks for the message. I followed up with the company who sent the file. They used photo shop to dress up our band picture, the rest of the poster (text, etc.) was done using In Design. I didn't know this. What I received was just the photo shop portion, so only one layer with picture. I need to get a trial version of In Design to see if I can figure out a work flow. Thanks again ! -Tom R.

• Using iPhoto, editing with Photo Elements 10, How to have save photos directly to iPhoto?

I want to keep using iphoto but use editing capabilities of elements 10. I am having a hardtime saving back to iphoto. Initialy was adding text to photos and had to first "flatten" the layers to be able to save to iphoto. (realized after two hours) Otherwise could'nt. Also corrected blemishes and would not save back to iphoto. It should not be that difficult if it is advertised as "edit directly from iphoto". The saving of the edits back to iPhoto should be straightforward as well, I think. now, common sense is not that common. Can anybody enlighten me? cropping and saving, no issue. THANKS!

Are you saving by using the same format? e.g. if opening a jpeg from iPhoto it must be saved as jpeg.
If using RAW images check settings are correct under the General à Advanced tab.
After Editing in PSE you must save and close in Elements for iPhoto to update correctly. iPhoto makes a virtual copy and it’s possible to right click an image and choose revert to original. Some users prefer to start the process by right clicking an image in iPhoto and choosing duplicate. After editing in PSE, saving and closing; two separate images are visible in iPhoto (the original and the edited version)
Whichever workflow you prefer - see this tech note for further information.

• Replacing special characters from xml document/text inside element

Hi
Is there any way to replace the xml codes to special characters inside an entire xml document/ for a text in element.
I want to get the xml codes to get replaced to respective special character(for any special character)
Please see the sample xml xml element below
<Details>Advance is applicable only for < 1000. This is mentioned in Seller's document</Details>
Thanks in advance .. any help will be highly appreciated.

So, just to be sure I understand correctly, you want this :
<Details>Advance is applicable only for < 1000. This is mentioned in Seller's document</Details>
to be converted to :
<Details>Advance is applicable only for < 1000. This is mentioned in Seller's document</Details>
If so, I'll say again : the resulting XML document will be invalid.
Extensible Markup Language (XML) 1.0 (Fifth Edition)
The ampersand character (&) and the left angle bracket (<) MUST NOT appear in their literal form, except when used as markup delimiters, or within a comment, a processing instruction, or a CDATA section. If they are needed elsewhere, they MUST be escaped using either numeric character references or the strings " & " and " < " respectively. The right angle bracket (>) may be represented using the string " > ", and MUST, for compatibility, be escaped using either " > " or a character reference when it appears in the string " ]]> " in content, when that string is not marking the end of a CDATA section.
Ask whoever "they" are why they would want to work with not wellformed XML.

• Can't edit text in a client's file... Wisdom appreciated!

A client has sent me a file (PDF) that contains various elements: typography that's editable, illustrations that are editable, and some typography that does not seem to be editable in Illustrator.
The apparently non-editable type shows up each character as an individual element, but not as outlines; the characters are in a bounding box but if I click View>outline, I don't see the character's outlines I just see an empty rectangle.
The file came from an artworker and I don't know if he's got a different version of illustrator to me or what...
Keen to sort this withough having to re-type out all of the detail...
Any suggestions?!
Thanks

Likely a different version. Since you don't see the outlines OR the editable text in "Outline" mode, that tells me the text is embedded as a graphic or Symbol. Look in the Symbol panel and see if there are characters there.
Can you "Jump into" an individual character by double-clicking?
What do you see listed in the Layer panel for each element?

• Editing Text After Saving

I am working in Premier Elements 9. I have a number of text slides and saved my work. I went to go back to edit some of the text and I am unable to do so. I can only add new text. Is there a way to edit text?
Thanks!

You are most welcome.
PrE's Titler is a surprisingly powerful tool. It does have a few limitations, like alignment grids (has some alignment tick marks), a full zoom, and hyphenation, but it is still very powerful, especially with the use of Styles for its Text and also for its Shapes.
With Titles, one tripping point for some, is that Titler is used to create Titles, and will place them into the Project Panel for use. One can then have multiple Instances of that Title on the Timeline, and if one makes a change to one of those Instances, or to the Title from the Project Panel, that change will affect all Instances of that Title. Often, this is what one wants, though not always. If you have created a Title, and wish to use variations of that Title, but say with different Text, then you will want to Duplicate that Title, and just edit the Text in each Duplicate. There is a big, and useful difference, between Duplicate Titles and Instances of a Title. Many users do not understand those differences, and become concerned when they edit an Instance of a Title, and cannot understand why that edit affects all other Instances of that Title - that is the way that it is supposed to work. If one needs to edit just one Instance of a Title, they would Duplicate that, make the edit and replace that Instance with the Duplicate.
Good luck and happy editing,

• After Effects Editable text: Feature refinement request

Not sure if anyone else out there uses this relatively recent feature in Premiere?
Within AE, in your comp settings, there is a new check box to allow unlocked text layers to be editable within Premiere.
This is a great feature that seems inspired by the identical feature set in Apple's deceased Final Cut Studio- allowing Motion Projects to have text edited and then rendered directly within FCP.
One of my clients has a facility that migrated to CC 2 years ago, and the introduction of this feature in CC came none to soon for us- as we had become quite dependent on it for our all our show's packaging graphics, lower thirds/ name keys etc.
Anyhow- enough backstory already! I love this feature, but the inability to change font size, kerning etc is nearly a deal breaker. Instead I've had to make 3x the templates in AE, with small, med, large font sizes- but this does not give line by line control.
I'm hopeful that the great team over at Adobe can buff up this feature to its full potential- maybe if the idea generates enough traffic it will happen sooner than later?
Here is a feature request I just submitted today. Please do the same if you'd like this functionality asap!
[Bellow are some screen grabs from Premiere, and of the disturbed tomb of FCP7-RIP]
*******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
AE Editable text: refinements to this great feature.
How would you like the feature to work?
Give the user in premiere broader control of the text layout. Font size is the #1 issue, but Kerning, tracking would be great too.
Why is this feature important to you?
I work at a facility that has utilized Apple's hugely successful FCP studio round tripping of Motion templates for all "Name Keys/ lower 3rds" and other video packaging elements. Having happily switched to CC, we've begun using the existing feature, but have issues building robust templates that can accommodate larger variation of character count. In FCP, we had font size, and tracking controls of motion templates with editable text enabled.
Great work on this feature! I'm just hoping to get more usefulness out of it

I know right?
I just built an extra 4 AE templates to try and mitigate this issue, but its not a graceful solution 6 templates to maintain and update instead of two [ the right and left justified versions].
Also in the process I found a little UI bug that would be great to solve 'while you're up' :}
When you enter a string of text that is 'too long', the text box breaks, and is very difficult to use.
Where I work, we are rolling out new graphics packaging for our broadcast series, and I'm pushing to use the AE text editing function to up our game graphics wise- even though I get the sense its going to bite me in the a$$ at some point- probably during a deadline :/
I'd love to have font size and tracking controls ASAP, SVP .

• What styles are lost when importing/converting PS text to editable text?

In CS5.5, when I import a PSD file with one or more text layers (retaining layer styles and editable layer styles) some of the layer styles change upon import.
In addition, after import, in the Comp panel, sometimes there are no visual differences between that display and the display in PS. But in individual style layers in the Timeline panel, things have changed. Most typically, strokes with gradients are changed either to a solid color (gray or red) or to a simple white-to-black gradient. How is it the display can show a gradient when the stroke layer shows a solid color?
When the text layers are converted to editable text, those changed style properties kick in.
I'm guessing some or all of this has to do with AE text not being able to have a gradient for the fill or stroke? That being the case, is there a work-around?
If this goes beyond not being able to use a gradient for fill or stroke, what are the "rules"? What styles are lost/changed upon import and when converting to editable text?

After Effects includes the entire Photoshop rendering engine, so any PSD and its layer styles should render fine (i.e., just like in Photoshop). If it doesn't, please submit a bug report.
But After Effects does not include the entire UI from Photoshop for creating and modifying layer styles.
The layer styles feature in After Effects exists primarily to provide fidelity between what you see in Photoshop and what you see in After Effects---not so that you can add and modify layer styles in After Effects. The UI in the Timeline panel is therefore a barebones implementation that doesn't include many of the features of layer styles in Photoshop. As you observe, there are many cases in which the representation in the Timeline panel is much more simplistic than what is in the Composition panel.
This separation between the UI and the ability to render with good fidelity is most apparent with pattern overlays. See this video for a good demonstration of how to use layer styles in After Effects by tapping into these features in Photoshop:
http://library.creativecow.net/articles/harrington_richard/photoshop_layer_styles_with_ae. php
> In CS5.5, when I import a PSD file with one or more text layers (retaining layer styles and editable layer styles) some of the layer styles change upon import.
How, exactly, do they change? A screenshot would be useful.
If it's what I'm suspecting, then the page that Mylenium points you to has the clue:
"When a layer style is applied to a vector layer—such as a text layer, a shape layer, or a layer based on an Illustrator footage item—visual elements that apply to the edges of the contents of the layer apply to the outlines of the vector objects, such as text characters or shapes. When a layer style is applied to a layer based on a non-vector footage item, the layer style applies to the edges of the layer’s bounds or masks."
When you convert between Photoshop text and editable text, you're changing the render order and also switching between raster images and vectors. This can affect appearance in many ways.

• Editing Text in PSE4

I recently purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 and I am trying to edit text in a saved document/picture and it wont let me select the text to change the fonts, colors, etc.. It makes a text box to add text. Can someone please explain how to do this.
Thanks,
~Michele

Michele,
I'll try to summarize all the above...
When you intially create text with the Text Tool it is placed in it's own separate layer. This and any other layers you have created are preserved when you save the file as PSD. If you later wish to change the text attributes (font, size, color, etc.) you then select the Text Tool and double-click the text. This activates the text layer, the text will be highlighted, and now you can make the text changes. Again, save the file as PSD.
Now if you want to save it in JPG, BMP, photobucket-compatible, etc, open the PSD file (if not already opened) and do a "Save As" to the other format. The result will be a flattened file with the text part of the image as Barbara mentioned. You cannot change the text on a flattened file, but you can always go back to the PSD version to change the text and resave it again in the flattened version.
Hope this clears things up.

• How do you edit text that is in a text box?

How do you edit text that is in a text box? I just want to change the font color of the text. Solution in the Help files recommends selecting the text and then selecting Optional) To make further changes to the text box:
Using the Select tool or the Text Box tool, click an edge of the text box to select it, and then drag a corner to resize it. Use the Properties toolbar to change the border and fill options.
Double-click the text box to edit the text or change the text attributes. Drag across text to select it, and then select options from the Properties toolbar.
This is what the help files recommend
(Optional) To make further changes to the text box:
Using the Select tool or the Text Box tool, click an edge of the text box to select it, and then drag a corner to resize it. Use the Properties toolbar to change the border and fill options.
Double-click the text box to edit the text or change the text attributes. Drag across text to select it, and then select options from the Properties toolbar.
When I try the above solution I don't have a "Options" in the "Properties" toolbar.
Why would they change a process that was so simple in previous editions to such a hidden awkward process?

Try with a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and/or changing the blending mode.
If the effect is too much for the rest of the bulb, you may be able to mask it out.
It would help if you post a representative picture here on the forum page for us to look at.

• Add or Edit Text Dialog Box Disappeared

I am attempting to add text to my pdf using the add or edit text tool in Acrobat Pro X. However, the dialog box that allows me to change fonts, size, color, etc. has disappeared. Does anyone know how to make the dialog box come back?

Hi,
This is a new problem. It started about 2 days before I posted the question. I have not updated my Acrobat recently and I was previously able to use the dialog box with no problem. I have tried in several different documents and the dialog box is not showing up.
Thanks for your assistance.

• Remotely editing text files in Windows WinRM/PSExec/Powershell/cmd

Hi!
How can I remotely edit a text file in Windows?
I am running and administering a number of Windows 7 workstations and Windows Server 2012 machines. I would like to be able to remotely edit text files on any of these machines. I can connect to any of these machines via psexec or powershell remoting. I
can also connect via rdp, but for the workstations I would rather not kick the user off unless I absolutely have to.
For example, we manage state configuration using
Salt. Local configuration files are stored in C:/salt/conf. I would like to be able to edit these config files on the fly.
This question on Stack Overflow covers the same topic, but none of the answers are particularly satisfying. Some of the possible solutions
are:
Remote Desktop: as I say, I would rather not have to kick a user off their workstation
Edit a file over a UNC path: this only works for files on a share, and setting up arbitrary shares for quick edits seems like a bad idea.
Install some manner of ftp or ssh server on all the target computers. This would certainly work, but it is it necessary with WinRM already active? I feel like installing and configuring extra software across all the machines in my organisation would be
a last resort.
Edit with a command line editor (e.g. vim, emacs) over a remote powershell session. This doesn't work. I don't understand the technical details, but a powershell remote session isn't interactive in the same way that ssh connections are.
Edit using powershell's -replace operator, out-file and add-content cmdlets. This works, but is hardly the same as a fully featured text editor.
Retrieve content from the remote, edit locally, and post back to the remote. This works, and is arguably the best solution I've found. Code sample from SO:
PS C:\Users\Meredith> Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {get-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config} > web.config
edit web config
PS C:\Users\Meredith> get-content web.config | Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {set-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config}
The last two options are the workflow that I've been using for now. Regex replacement for very simple changes, and copying to local and editing there for more complicated ones. Neither is ideal, but they work. It just feels incredibly old fashioned.
I'm considering writing a plugin to my editor of choice (vim) to perform the remote fetch and save, to make my workflow a little bit smoother. Before I try that, I just want to know if there's anything that I've missed, or misunderstood.
Cheers

What is the "redirector"?
I posted the same question to Stack Overflow, and was told about administrative shares. I wasn't aware of this, and it's exactly what I wanted. I can open the filetree of a remote machine with the path \\machinename\c$\. Perfectly simple, now that I know
the answer.
