Editing text in mail

Editing text in mail is nearly impossible since upgrading to Mavericks. Cursor doesn't go where I want it to go and doesn't edit where it looks like it's going to edit. Anybody else have the same problem?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

• Editing text in mail: text is being moved, jumps to and fro

Anybody the same experience? When editing text in the mail window, things go crazy often when I cut and paste parts of the text, most often I've seen this with complete paragraphs (i.e. hard return somewhere at the end).
Text is then inserted at completely different locations then where I paste the text. Often a paragraph before the actual point of insertion. Seems to be a serious flaw with the text handling in Mail. Colleagues have experienced the same issue.
Note: also the focus on windows in Mail sometimes messes up, when I click on the front window of e.g. an open message in mail, the Finder will move to the front instead of that message.
Work to be done boys (and girls)!

• Copying editable text to other apps

Hi all,
I'm having a little problem that I can't find an answer for anywhere. I had CS2 on my old Mac PowerPC (10.3.9) and upgraded to CS4 on a new iMac (10.5.8). In my old set-up when I selected text from Illustrator and copied it to another app it was pasted as editable text. In the new set-up when I try the same thing I get an uneditable image file (a PDF?) of the text.
Is there a setting in Illustrator or my System preferences I need to change to make the copied text paste as editable text? I tried changing the "File Handling and Clipboard" options but that didn't work.
Thanks for any help!
Mike

Millenium,
Well, yes and no. I understand what you mean but whenever I'm copying text to a Mail message it's not crucial for me to retain the appearance. I'm usually try to shortcut some typing (especially for long sections of text) or asking a client about a line of text that appears in an illustration I'm working on. In these cases I would much rather include editable text than an uneditable PDF.
Also, Mail seems to be the only app that I've encountered so far that doesn't give me an option when pasting the text, which would be the really smart thing to do. Even if I compose the message in Plain Text it still does it.
According to Mail help these are the options:
Here are ways to paste text:
■ To paste text so that it retains its original format, choose Edit > Paste.
■ To paste text so that its format matches adjacent text, choose Edit > “Paste and Match Style.”
■ To paste text with a single quote bar to the left of the text, choose Edit > Paste as Quotation.
Tried them all, none work. There doesn't seem to be any preference setting either. I know there are work-arounds (paste to another app, copy and paste to Mail) but you'd think there'd be a simpler option within Mail itself. Maybe there is. I'll post it if I find out what it is.

• I cannot edit text in a PDF created from scanning

I am using Adobe XI, and I have created a PDF by scanning a document.
When I do click on a paragraph to edit text, all the page appears selected, it seems to be an image. At that moment a message pops up saying: this page has not editable text or digitalized content. The editing tools are disabled, so I cannot edit text.
If I do export a page to Excel or Word, I can edit text there, although there are some kind of data that is not converted properly (even when I have executed OCR).
I have edited preferences, but I am not sure if I did it correctly.
Thanks

I am using Acrobat XI Pro on PC.
Of course, I have done all the steps you mention, but I wanted someone to confirm me if these setting values are correct in order to obtain the best results. I repeat the paragraph of my previous discussion that I want to clarify, just in case some of you can help me, mainly about optimization
I digitalized the document from the scanner. This scanner is installed in the net, so I personalized the settings in Acrobat and I chose memory mode instead of native mode.
Mode color: black on white
Resolution: 600 ppp
As you say in your mail, I understand I should choose ClearScan OCR not searchable just at this moment.
Well, and what about the options of optimization?, JBIG2 (without lost)?, 4 CCITT?
And filters?, I have: activated, low, activated, medium
Are these values congruous or compatible?
Thank you

• What is Rich Text in Mail.app?

When I compose a message in Mail.app, I have the option of sending it in "Plain Text" or "Rich Text".
When I receive a Formatted Text message in Mail.app, it is generally --but not always-- handled correctly. The formatting applied by the sender, in whatever email client, seems to appear consistently in Mail.app. Not always perfectly.
Probably I can find a standard for RTF as applies to many Text Processor apps...
• Is that the same "Rich Text" as followed by Mail.app?
• Is there a public RTF standard that Mail.app is known to follow?
• Is there a direct method, or a reasonably simple indirect method for making Mail.app's RTF formatting visible?
• Beside Mail.app's GUI commands, is there a direct method, or a reasonably simple indirect method for editing Mail.app's RTF formatting?
I think most email clients transmit Formatted Text messages using HTML tags.
• Does mail.app handle these in addition to RTF, convert HTML tags to RTF, or is, in this context, RTF ~= HTML?
• Is there a public standard HTML standard --certainly a subset-- that Mail.app is known to follow?
I think all Formatted Text messages are actually transmitted by email servers with two copies, one formatted and one plain-text. I know I can often see HTML markup when I use View-->Message-->Raw Source on an incoming message selected. But there doesn't seem to be any way of viewing or editing the markup in the reply message. Specifically View-->Message-->Raw Source is grey when a reply is selected.
• Is there a direct method, or a reasonably simple indirect method for editing HTML tags when responding to a formatted message?
A big annoyance: Often, when I reply to a formatted message, some groups of text, when selected, are surrounded by a rounded-corner grey rectangle, with a circle-X close/delete button at the upper left. These are also visible when I'm composing a reply. It's difficult -- sometimes impossible-- to open a new line for a reply inside such boxes. I think this box corresponds to HTML table cells --or possibly other containers-- in the incoming message.
• Does Mail.app use the rounded-corner grey rectangle to mark a received table cell? Anything else?
• Is there a direct method, or reasonably simple indirect method for removing the cell container so vertical space can be inserted?
• Does Mail.app use any other special markings to denote HTML formatting?
In other words,
• What is "Rich Text" in Mail.app?
TIA

No, Mail.app is using HTML - as you mentioned that's pretty much true for all email applications that send or receive formatted messages. When you copy and paste from another app, it's converted to HTML (I think that conversion is handled by the system, as part of the copy/paste operation - i.e., it's converted while still on the clipboard).
• Is there a public RTF standard that Mail.app is known to follow?
HTML, not RTF. w3.org is the standards body. Like many OS X apps, Mail.app is using Webkit (the Safari web rendering engine) to display the messages (although I do notice some differences from Safari, so it's probably limited somehow, most likely for security reasons)
• Is there a direct method, or a reasonably simple indirect method for making Mail.app's RTF formatting visible?
Save your outgoing message, then view it in your "Drafts" folder. Click the "View" menu, then "Message --> Raw Source".
• Beside Mail.app's GUI commands, is there a direct method, or a reasonably simple indirect method for editing Mail.app's RTF formatting?
Nope. The "raw source" view cannot be edited.

That's essentially correct, the box corresponds to the HTML table. I think you get that when you add some HTML code to your message that Mail doesn't have the interface to edit (no table tools to add or delete rows, for instance), but I've only encountered it with tables.
• Is there a direct method, or reasonably simple indirect method for removing the cell container so vertical space can be inserted?
I usually resort to pasting the message into a more capable editor - often TextEdit is good enough, but I've sometimes resorted to using Dreamweaver. Make your changes, then paste the result (from the WYSIWYG, not the HTML code) back into your mail message.
Other times I just avoid using Mail.app. Thunderbird is better for complicated HTML, or was better - it's been a while since I've needed to use for this purpose.
• Does Mail.app use any other special markings to denote HTML formatting?
No, not to my knowledge.

• Editable text scan

using hp officejet 8500 with window xp I was able to edit my scans. Now using window 8.1 that menu is not available.
The only download was HP scan & capture. Though it will scan photos and docs (only in pdf). Is there a way to scan to editable text and also e mail the scan directly as was possible with xp??

Hi,
In order to get full funtionality as OCR scanning, you will need to install the latest full feature software for your PC.
First open the control panel and select Devices and Printers, right click any existing Officejet 8500 icon and select Remove Device.
If the printer is connected with a USB, unplug the cable at this time. be sure to keep it unplugged till the installation will guide to connect it.
Next download and install the full feature software below, that will add full functionality as OCR scanning through the HP Solution Center Software:

• How is it possible to adjust the background images and the text in Mail?

How is it possible to adjust the background images and the text in Mail?

Here's the solution I used to solve the same problem. If you're not comfortable editing the source files, this might be more than you want to take on--but I've done it to several files with no ill effects. You can follow the instructions on this page and the referenced original post from (he includes a link on the page). Good luck! He's got some great tips on some of his other pages.
http://photo.rwboyer.com/2010/03/15/aperture-3-book-theme-trick/
A warning about editing the Master pages--it only edits them in that book--it doesn't update the theme. So if you go to create another book with those same layouts, you'll have to duplicate the book and replace all the images. An alternative would be to create a "clean" book with no photos in it and then just use that as a starting point each time.

• I can't edit or delete mail messages on my iphone 5

I can't edit or delete mail messages on my iphone. The edit icon at the top of the inbox is there and when pressed I can select messages but can't go further - the icon to delete has disappeared and the message that was selected deselects itself.
I already tried to restore my iPhone, this didn't help.

I have iPhone 4S and have had the same problem since I upgraded to iOS 7. I could only send and receive from iPhones.
I tried everything that was suggested. Nothing worked.
I called AT&T this morning. Turns out, iOS 7 cancelled my text messaging plan!!!! I was able text to other iPhone users because of iMessage. They turned my texting plan back on and I can now text everyone again!!

• How do you edit text that is in a text box?

How do you edit text that is in a text box? I just want to change the font color of the text. Solution in the Help files recommends selecting the text and then selecting Optional) To make further changes to the text box:
Using the Select tool or the Text Box tool, click an edge of the text box to select it, and then drag a corner to resize it. Use the Properties toolbar to change the border and fill options.
Double-click the text box to edit the text or change the text attributes. Drag across text to select it, and then select options from the Properties toolbar.
This is what the help files recommend
(Optional) To make further changes to the text box:
Using the Select tool or the Text Box tool, click an edge of the text box to select it, and then drag a corner to resize it. Use the Properties toolbar to change the border and fill options.
Double-click the text box to edit the text or change the text attributes. Drag across text to select it, and then select options from the Properties toolbar.
When I try the above solution I don't have a "Options" in the "Properties" toolbar.
Why would they change a process that was so simple in previous editions to such a hidden awkward process?

Try with a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and/or changing the blending mode.
If the effect is too much for the rest of the bulb, you may be able to mask it out.
It would help if you post a representative picture here on the forum page for us to look at.

I am attempting to add text to my pdf using the add or edit text tool in Acrobat Pro X. However, the dialog box that allows me to change fonts, size, color, etc. has disappeared. Does anyone know how to make the dialog box come back?

Hi,

• Remotely editing text files in Windows WinRM/PSExec/Powershell/cmd

Hi!
How can I remotely edit a text file in Windows?
I am running and administering a number of Windows 7 workstations and Windows Server 2012 machines. I would like to be able to remotely edit text files on any of these machines. I can connect to any of these machines via psexec or powershell remoting. I
can also connect via rdp, but for the workstations I would rather not kick the user off unless I absolutely have to.
For example, we manage state configuration using
Salt. Local configuration files are stored in C:/salt/conf. I would like to be able to edit these config files on the fly.
This question on Stack Overflow covers the same topic, but none of the answers are particularly satisfying. Some of the possible solutions
are:
Remote Desktop: as I say, I would rather not have to kick a user off their workstation
Edit a file over a UNC path: this only works for files on a share, and setting up arbitrary shares for quick edits seems like a bad idea.
Install some manner of ftp or ssh server on all the target computers. This would certainly work, but it is it necessary with WinRM already active? I feel like installing and configuring extra software across all the machines in my organisation would be
a last resort.
Edit with a command line editor (e.g. vim, emacs) over a remote powershell session. This doesn't work. I don't understand the technical details, but a powershell remote session isn't interactive in the same way that ssh connections are.
Edit using powershell's -replace operator, out-file and add-content cmdlets. This works, but is hardly the same as a fully featured text editor.
Retrieve content from the remote, edit locally, and post back to the remote. This works, and is arguably the best solution I've found. Code sample from SO:
PS C:\Users\Meredith> Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {get-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config} > web.config
edit web config
PS C:\Users\Meredith> get-content web.config | Invoke-Command -Session $ps -ScriptBlock {set-content c:/inetpub/myapp/web.config}
The last two options are the workflow that I've been using for now. Regex replacement for very simple changes, and copying to local and editing there for more complicated ones. Neither is ideal, but they work. It just feels incredibly old fashioned.
I'm considering writing a plugin to my editor of choice (vim) to perform the remote fetch and save, to make my workflow a little bit smoother. Before I try that, I just want to know if there's anything that I've missed, or misunderstood.
Cheers

What is the "redirector"?
I posted the same question to Stack Overflow, and was told about administrative shares. I wasn't aware of this, and it's exactly what I wanted. I can open the filetree of a remote machine with the path \\machinename\c$\. Perfectly simple, now that I know
the answer.

• Editing Text in Acrobat Pro DC

I've followed all the instructions for editing text but when I go to select a text box the entire area is selected and the only choice is to move objects on the page (flip, left/right, etc). I'm unable to click on the blue box to select that specific text box I need to adjust. There is no option for me to select Tools to follow the other help instructions "If a bounding box doesn’t appear, choose Tools > Recognize Text > In This File."

• How do I leave editable text and images in a PDF?

I recently bought a flyer template and it came as an editable PDF. Here is one of the templates http://www.wendygarratt.com/images/flyer.pdf
Every field, both text and graphic object, is fully editable in the free Adobe reader. I have Acrobat X and have tried all the methods of producing something like this but nothing has worked. I wish to produce not just one page template PDFs that can be edited like the one above, but I also have a 20+ page magazine, which currently is distributed in PDF form and I wanted certain image and text fields within the magazine to be customisable too.
I design the magazine using InDesign and the exported pages are composed of 1 large background image with text fields laid over the top. I have tried exporting it as an interactive PDF, ticking the layers option for Acrobat, but when I try to create an editable form (Tools>Forms>Create>Open file) it does not recognise any of the text fields at all.
Can someone please help me before I slam my head repeatedly in a door? I have been searching for a solution for so long and I'm getting rather frustrated.
Thank you in advance
Wendy-G

Thanks for the replies I've had so far, but I really need some detailed help to sort this.
I want to be able to create a PDF that has editable text and editable graphics over a background image, that can be edited in the free Adobe Reader, as per this item - http://www.wendygarratt.com/images/flyer.pdf
I know this was designed in LiveCycle and I have LiveCycle and Adobe Acrobat Pro X, but LiveCycle is new to me. I am a quick learner (I use Photoshop, InDesign, etc) and need help in getting started.
I am willing to work with someone to help get this sorted but it is urgent that I get to grips with this.
Thanks so much for helping
