Editing text using illustrator

We always used to be able to correct text using illustrator, having the font of course, however now when saving illustrator comes up with 'an unknown error has occured'.
Any ideas?
Cheers
Acrobat Pro 8.1.2

GreatWhite wasn't clear about how he/she was using Illustrator. Many people think they can open a PDF file directly in Illustrator to edit it. While this may work in certain limited situations, it can seriously alter the file, switch fonts or encoding, throw out color profiles, etc. As Dov Isaac, Adobe principal scientist has noted many times in these user forums, Illustrator was never intended for this. I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that that was what GreatWhite implied.
Yes, Illustrator can be selected as an Object editor with the Touchup Object tool to edit individual objects.

  • Can't edit text using "Add text" tool

Hello, I click "Add Text" in "Content Editing" and add some text into a PDF document. Then, I save the pdf. Then, I re-open the document and I can't edit the same text using the same "Add Text" tool OR delete that piece of text.

by the way, when you said

What you are doing is adding comments, in the Acrobat sense, rather than text (which is part of the original page). Comments are separate. So try the commenting tools.
did you mean something like this: http://www.nitropdf.com/pdf/EN/Nitro_Pro_8_User_Guide.pdf under "Annotation layer and content layer" pages 251-252. Also, when I added text using "Add Text" did it go into content layer so that I was unable to edit it after saving using acrobat ?

  • How does one, edit text using Preview?

    Hi all,
I have recently created a document using Preview...The document includes text that I inserted using the text tool within Preview itself...I was able to edit these text windows quite freely during the creation of the document...
However, today I have opened my Preview document only to find that the usual method of clicking on the text is failing and that I cannot edit those very same text windows anymore...How is this so and how can I edit them once again?
Any help muchly appreciated, thank you!

    Dear Terence Devlin,
    Thank you for your reply!
Unfortunately I'm still unable to edit the text...When I select the 'View' menu; the 'Highlights and Notes' is greyed out and therefore unable to be selected.
    Any further assistance greatly appreciated!

Is the event generated ? What is the value of your "val" variable ?

  • Need to edit text in pdf file created in Illustrator CS6

I need for someone else to be able to edit text in a pdf I created from Illustrator. They have full acrobat and should be able to edit it. I have tried it myself to test before sending it but it's not working. The original file was created in Illustrator CS6 and saved as a pdf (text has not been created outlines). I opened the file in acrobat and saved it out as an extended file to be able to edit the text but no luck. Need to be able to highlight existing text and change it. I have tried edit text tool but instead of a selection box around each line of text, it puts a selection box around all of the text. I can highlight the text and delete it but am unable to change it. Each individual text line needs to be editable. Is there something I need to do differently in Illustrator to get it to work correctly in Acrobat?
If it helps- the file is a calendar and they need to be able to change the dates and events that are already there.

This really isn't a suitable use of Acrobat. You should all be using the same editing tool (i.e. Illustrator).
Extending files reduces the amount of editing Acrobat can do, it does not increase it.
The tool to edit text from Illustrator would be Edit Document Text. There is no guarantee it will break up nicely into lines, it's trying to help by making paragraph text.
Conceivably you could use a form for this (fill in the blank for dates) but really, you should be using the same tool. Not necessarily Illustrator, more Excel or specialist Calendar software.

  • Can I change text in a tiff using Illustrator?

I have a layout for an ebook with some important black and white bitmap illustrations in tiff., 300 dpi. These has appeared ok on print, but not on screen, reading the same pdf-file. This is partly because there are texts in fontsize 5-6 pt. People tell me I have to convert the drawings, or at least the text, to vector graphics.
Question is now - since at the moment I have CS6 avaiable - can I open these tiff.s in Illustrator, change the text to vector and then save in a format, that can be inserted in the Word2010 layout? (You might wonder why I use Word, but it was a question of economy, when the project was started up). Or are there other ways? Thanks for any answers!

Hi, here are some more details:
I´m working on a layout-job, that involves both Adobe CS and Microsoft Word, and since I haven´t found any forums that comprises both, I´m putting my questions here and have been very grateful for the help I already got from your answers. These are some precise details of my task:
The layout is for a revised and extended edition of a book, previously published twice 10-20 years ago, first in danish, later in english. I wasn´t involved in these. The new layout that I make is made in Word 2010, set up in a template made for the purpose. The book is being prepaired both for paper and for ebook publishing, and as far as the printed paperbook I have no worries concerning the illustrations, since they have already been printed in a satisfyingly good quality. The problem is how to present clear and readable illustrations for the e-book.
The material I was given consists of the complete english book-layout made in PageMaker 6.5 plus all the illustrations as separate TIFF-files with english texts. These TIFF´s have been inserted in my new Word layout, and then some of these texts do not appear with a satisfying clearness in the test PDF´s I make from the Word layout (PDF being the first format we have chosen for the upcoming ebook). The illustrations in question here are (originally handmade) black and white line drawings (ink), mostly geometric figures with the english texts (appr. 5,5 to 9 pt). The texts were – using Photoshop - added (not by me) to scanned copies of the original danish-texted drawings. These scans were saved as TIFF´s, typically 600 dpi, onelayered,  bitdepth is 1 – and these TIFF´s are the ones I need to improve and at the same time make a seceond set with danish texts.
The attached TIFF is a section of the most problematic of these drawings (the complete drawing is 1,2Mb). As for the size, the diameter of the largest ring should in the end layout be appr. 1,7 cm, which is eqiuvalent to the original size of the TIFF. In AI it opens up smaller, in PS it opens up bigger – for some reason? Of course e-book readers have the possibility of zooming in, but in 1:1 the illustrations should look somewhat ok, don´t you think? (Here I tried to insert my TIFF, but get the message "content not allowed" - what could be wrong? The file is not over 200 Kb)
So these are the steps: 1) Improving/altering the TIFF´s, maybe change the format to something compatible with Word2010. - 2) Inserting the drawings properly in Word. – 3) Convert to a good quality PDF within an acceptable filesize.
My questions right now are: 1) Will it be enough to replace the unclear texts with bigger and/or screenfriendly fonts, using Photoshop again, - or 2) do I need to change to vectorized texts, using Illustrator or other software like Corel Draw. 3) How to keep the quality through the process of being exported/inserted to Word and subsequently converted to pdf?
My experiences with PS and AI up till now are: The process of vectorizing my illustrations or part of them, seems a long a winding one, let alone the trouble with inserting EPS-files in Word. I have made som attempts with WMF, but the files I get are simply much too big (20Mb+). EMF, exported from AI and in Word converted to a Microsoft Office Drawing Object is the best I have made, but the file is still rather big, the section alone is 5,6Mb. (I would prefer not more than 2Mb). Other suggested formats that I don´t get any satisfying results with are PNG and JPEG. EPS is unreadable (we have already discussed this) in Word, and looks ok when I reach the final PDF made with PDFCreator, but using Acrobat Pro there is a black field where the EPS should be.
    Any suggestions?

  • Text image back to Editable text

I need to convert "text image" to "editable text" in illustrator. I can't found any option for this in illustrator.
But in acrobat using the OCR option i changed the text image back to editable text. Is it possible to convert "text image" to "editable text" through programatically using Illustrator SDK. I need help for this. Kindly advice me.
Any script or plugin available for that.
    Thanks in advance,

If you are looking for scripting advice, you are more likely to get a response on the scripting forum.
I would suggest looking at the Illustrator scripting guide and sample (both should be in the "Scripting" folder located in your Illustrator folder).

  • Outline Text as editable Text

Is there any possiblity to convert "Outline Text as editable Text" in illustrator?

    Short of retyping, no.
If there is a lot of text, you might consider an OCR program.
If you have Acrobat, you can try its rudimentary OCR capabilities. Rasterize your text (using a sufficiently high document raster effects resolution setting), save a copy with PDF compatibility, then open it in Acrobat. Go to Document | Recognize Text Using OCR | Start. Don't expect an exact typeface match.
Copy the text in Acrobat and paste in Illustrator.

  • Editing Text in Acrobat 8 Professional

How come I can't edit text using OCR text recognition or touch up text tool on documents that are scanned in
and saved as pdf's? I have more success using these tools on pdfs that are saved out of Word, etc.

I think Bernd was asking 1. Formatted text and graphics, 2. Searchable Image, or 3. Searchable Image (exact) that are the 3 options in AA8. With the searchable image, you may be able to edit the text, but it will remain hidden (the screen display is an image). With formatted text and graphics there is sometimes a problem because an outline font is used that can not be used for editing. You might be able to change the font and then edit -- I have not spent a lot of time with the option.

  • Help: edit text frame?

    Hi
I'm new to Indesign software and need to edit a workbook created in Indesign by my graphic designer. The document is 98 pages long and on the first 2 pages I can edit text using the i-bar text tool. Yet, when I click on text tool to edit the rest of the pages, the i-bar gets a box around it (like to create a new text frame) and it won't allow me to edit the text. I've checked if layers were marked - nothing obvious. Any ideas on how to fix this without having to annoy my graphic designer with this (she's on maternity leave).
    cheers
    bron

Hi Salah and Peter ... I appreciate your responses and so quick ... yeap, I'm starting to see what you were both saying - it's very helpful thanks so much.

  • Is there a way to edit text in a smart object brought in from illustrator?

Is there a way to edit text in a smart object brought in from illustrator? Many thanks for the help!
And can anyone recommend learning resources for someone (me) who is an AI user for a decade who needs to work in PS for web mockups? Something other than a basic PS tutorial. Something geared towards that specific task. I'm not a PS beginner - but have mostly used it for photo correction until now.
Truly -- thanks! BTW - I'm in the CS 6 Suite and CC will not be available to me.

OMG! When I went back into the ai file and made sure that the text was on it's own layer (which I had not originally done) I could indeed edit the text in the file when exported to ps! This is a perfect solution for this situation. As far as the person I'm working with  - who fears ai more than anything - I can work in ai - which in many ways is so much less cumbersome than ps - and just export - clicking "preserve" layers & text editing! I hope this helps someone else! Sisham - many thanks for your help!

  • Ary you try to tell me that Illustrator can't have a outline stroke on editable text?

Ary you try to tell me that Illustrator can't have a outline stroke on editable text? Corel Draw have this.
I don't want to change to curves my text every time. I want it to e editable.
Why I can't use a outline stroke on text?

    AU2,
You can just select the live Type with the (normal) Selection Tool, then click Add New Stroke in the Appearance palette flyout. After that you can select it with the (relevant) Type Tool and edit as you like.

  • Illustrator to Acrobat - Edit Text

So I had to make a marketing pdf with graphics and text.  They only way I knew how to was in illustrator CS5.  I exporting the individual pages then combined them all in Acrobat X.  Now a sales rep needs me to change the text on some of the pages for a particular client.  Is there an easy way I can make the full pdf document have editable text so my sales reps can change it as needed?
Can this be done by saving it as a word document?  When I tried it with 1 page the fonts changed on me.  I don't know Acrobat that well so I'm starting to learn it now.  Should I have made the template in Illustrator and did the text in Acrobat???
    Thanks

No, this isn't really realising. Everyone working on a collaborative document needs to use the same software, and recreate the PDF after even the smallest change. Or, one person needs to co-ordinate the change. Acrobat doesn't turn PDFs into a simply editable thing, and it's best not to even start down the limited editing path that is there.
I'd like to recommend you consider InDesign, probably a far more suitable tool. Or even Word if the layout is simpler.
Above all KEEP THE ORIGINAL AND REMAKE THE PDF. On no account ever convert from PDF to something else to edit it.

  • Can I Scan to editable text on HP Officejet Pro 8620 using the Apple Printer Driver 3.0?

Can I Scan to editable text on HP Officejet Pro 8620 using the Apple Printer Driver 3.0?
I had a very difficult time getting my new HP Officejet Pro 8620 functioning as well as it does now.  I just tried scanning something as editable text for the first time and it ended up being scanned as a pdf.  At one point in my various tries there was a note on the printer screen that I did not have the HP OCR software installed.
This may be because the resolution to my installation problems with the HP Officejet Pro 8620 seems to have been reverting to operating with the HP-Apple Printer Drivers 3.0 package instead of the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg installation package.
I do not, therefore, have the HP Scan application on my computer now which is where HP says its OCR software can be found.
So what I'm afraid of is that I'm now running well with the HP-Apple driver but if I do go back and install the HP Officejet Pro v12.32.0 driver software with the HP installer, in order to access the OCR softwware in HP Scan application, I'll mess up everything else.
Is there any chance that the HP-Apple Printer Drivers 3.0 package I have installed also includes OCR software?  If so where can I find instructions for activating it and using it with the HP 8620's scanner?
Or can I only get OCR capability with the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg package?
Any experience with this?  Should I leave well enough alone?  Or can I somehow install the HP-Officejet-Pro-8620_v12.32.0.dmg package without messing up my current functionality?
    Thanks
    Steve

The printer driver that is installed automatically from Apple doesn't scan. The scanner part can be accessed through Image Capture, but I don't think that does any OCR on the scan. You'd need a separate program. As you noted, many of the bundled software programs have OCR built-in (albeit limited). From my experience, that is only activated when you scan to "searchable" PDF or something similar. You would then have to extract the text from the PDF.
I don't have an HP printer/scanner, so take this all with a grain of salt.
If you can just install the Scanner utilities, that shouldn't affect the printer portion.
Your other option would be to purchase separate OCR software. Unless you need to scan lots of documents into text, you should further investigate installing the HP scan utilities.
