Editing tips for slowing down HD (flash) clips?  Trimming HD clips?

Hello all... I'm new to HD flash content and have a couple of questions about some techniques that could speed up my workflow. I'm used to 'log and capture', but just now beginning my first projects ever using 'log and transfer' of HD content from flash cards. Anyway, here's what I'm hoping I could do:
1. In the past with DV tape, I would drop an entire captured clip (usually and entire tape worth of video) into my Sequence then change the speed of that entire clip from 100% to 80% for my editing needs before cutting it up for editing. With this new log and transfer, it takes every clip between takes and makes them their own independent clip (IE- each time you stop recording on the shoot it makes what you just recorded a clip, whether it's 10 seconds or one hour long). So instead of having a hour's worth of footage with pink break point markers after doing a 'DV Start/Stop Detect' function, you get a boat load of 10 to 15 second individual clips.
Question: Is it possible to select all the clips or set something in the sequence settings to change all of the clips speed from 100% (real time) to say 80% (bit of slow motion) without having adjust each individual clip one-by-one?
2. In the past with DV tape, after slowing down my entire clip I would then go through and make cuts a second before and a second after each and every break point (or pink break point marker after doing a DV Start/Stop Detect). Maybe I've always done this the hard way, who know, so I was wondering if there's a way to select all of this HD content in my Sequence (the individual clips as described in my first question) and automatically have FCP trim a second off the start and finish of each clip (whether it's been slowed down or not)? This obviously would accomplish being able to add transitions between clips (unless there's another way to accomplish adding transitions between clips without trimming them?).
Anyway pointers would be great! I love the HD flash content, but now I'm just realizing my old techniques with DV when it comes to the basic editing isn't going to work with this HD content from flash cards, making my job take 2-3 times as long as it would in the past. So I'm hoping FCP has added these kind of 'shortcuts' much like they did with being able to apply a single transition to a selected batch of clips.
I'm up to date on all software and what not... running FCP 7.0.1.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response, but I have access to the FCP user manual and have already read that. I usually only come here as a last resort. I'm hoping somebody can actually answer my two specific questions vs. directing me to a user manual that I already have. Specifically the two questions I asked above with a simple set of instructions on how to accomplish both, it either is at all possible. The user manual did not provide those answers for me and if it did, I'm not understanding it.
And if what you are saying is I can import, or 'log and transfer', all of the footage from one card as one long clip then treating it like it's DV 'log and capture' footage I'd love to know the settings on how to accomplish that as well. I tried that and looked for settings and read the manual and I'm not seeing where that is possible.
I'm not a Hollywood film producer, so spoon feeding might be necessary! I'm hoping to get 'on the fly' help and advice from others that might know what I'm trying to accomplish and do it themselves all the time vs. sitting in front of my editing stations for a week trying to figure it out on my own after reading a vague user manual.

  • Fix For Slow Down Worked!

From a previous fix - this worked to eliminate what was a 5 to 10 minute startup and shut down problem for our iMAC using OS X 10.5.8. with the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor - from a thread from a while back (and sorry, I am not going through all the folks that contributed, but the dogs are ready to go outside):
    (full excerpt below my procedures)
    Procedures -
x - first close all unnecessary applications
    1 - go to applications
2 - load the Terminal App
    3 - type: sudo chown root:admin /
4 - then press the return key
5 - type in your password when asked (the screen will not show that you are typing)and the press the return key
    6 - type: sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
7 - then press the return key
    8 - type: sudo kextcache -system-caches
9 - then press the return key
10 - close the Terminal app
I then shut down my computer, started it up, let it fully boot, shut it down a second time, then when I restarted everything was back to normal!!!
Here is the actual excerpt I used to fix the slowness - don't ask me how it works, cuz I am a novice:
    From mad84max and user gbvin:
    Go to the Terminal App
"It seems that somehow the ownership of my root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to myself instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app:
    terminal commands
    sudo chown root:admin /
    sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
    sudo kextcache -system-caches
You'll have to enter your password after the first command."
Hope this will help you since it was really frustrating for me.

I had slowness on my 3G after upgrading to iOS 4, but I found a simple fix here:
    http://www.davekawalec.com/2010/07/3-steps-to-fix-iphone-3g-slowness-after-ios4- upgrade/
It's basically the same steps you recommend, but then after a reboot, you can turn all of the search functions back on. I haven't had a performance problem since I did this.

  • Tip for slow networks

My wireless network suddenly became very slow. I would reboot my AEBS and it would be fine for a very short period, then get very slow again. From what little info I could glean from the Internet, I downloaded a program called istumbler - which gave me some basic information about wireless networks in my area. Through this program, I could see that one of my neighbours networks were using the same channel (1) as mine. I switched my Channel from Automatic to a manual channel that no one else was using. Problem solved.
I post this for two reasons. Firstly, with the growing number of networks around us all, others may encounter this issue. Secondly, I think Apple should be encouraged to program the "Automatic" setting to find, and to "switch-on-the-fly" to a channel that is not in use by neighbours.

this happens to me every couple of months with my AEBS. the only solution so far has been to use the utility to create a brand-new network.

  • Basic schema design and security mechanisms for slowing down bandwidth

    Hi to all!
At first I am sorry for a lot of noob questions - I am just beginner in networking.
I have LAN with 1 SW (cisco catalyst 2950 series), 1 R (cisco 2501), one Apache server on Linux machine (Fedora) and 5 computers . My task is to test my application for preventing DoS attacks on the computer with Apache. My network design is on the image, but if will be necessery, I can change it (I can use more switches and routers like this). So my noob questions are:
1.) will this desing work? How can I connect these to LANs to router? do I need one more router? can I connect SW ethernet port to router's console port?
2.) I have erased SW and R configuration. I have configured only interfaces and RIP protocol with networks 10.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/24. what else I need to configure for making possible viewing webpage from computer with apache on other computer?
3.) what is "ip http server" setting?
4.) i need to send TCP, UDP, HTTP and ICMP packets from computers to apache (is it default allowed?).
5.) i need to use all bandwidth for DoS attack, so i need to disable security mechanisms (configurations are erased, so what else do i need to disable or set up?) I heard only about storm-control, but it is disabled.
6.) do I need to setup something like this for full speed on devices?
    interface range fa 0/1 - 3
    speed 100
    duplex full
7.) last question is, I want to monitor protocols and ports of packets sent from computers to apache computer or bandwidth usage (bits/s). Does have SW/R some mechanisms for statistics like this?
    Thank you very much.

The 2950 switch and 2501 router are pretty old, low specification devices, so you might run into performance problems. Be aware of this. The 2950 also is not, from memory, a layer 3 switch, so it does *no* routing.
To answer your questions 9I'm assuming some basic knowlege of how to use IOS, so these commands are indicative only).
The 2501 has only one ethernet port, so you can't connect the way you have in your diagram. Youc an not connect an ethernet port to the router console port - the console port is a serial connection, by default running at 9600/8N1, and is not convertable to ethernet.
To make your required network work, you'd need to do the following.
    1) Configure your 2501 ethernet port for dot1q VLAN trunking by doing something like this
    interface fastethernet0
    no shutdown
    speed 100
    duplex full
    no ip address
    interface fastethernet0.2
    encapsulation dot1q 2
    ip address 10.0.0.4 255.0.0.0
    interface fastethernet0.3
    encapsulation dot1q 3
    ip address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0
Setup in this manner you don't need routing protocols such as RIP because both routes will be directly connected, and the router will know how to get between them without anything fancy.
Then connect the ethernet interface of your 2501 to a port on your 2950 switch - I'll assume it's a 24 port switch, so I'll use interface f0/24
Create VLAN's 2 & 3 for your devices by doing this (2950 is so old the IOS method us creating VLAN's won't work, from memory)
    vlan database
    vlan 2 name workstations
    vlan 3 name server
    interface f0/24
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    speed 100
    duplex full
    switchport trunk allowed vlans 2-3
You can create a VLAN interface for management of your switch at the same time if you like
    interface vlan2
    ip address 10.0.0.7 255.0.0.0
    no shutdown
Then connect your devices. You will need to configure each switchport into an appropriate VLAN - for example, if you are connecting your server to port f0/23
    interface f0/23
    switchport mode access
    spanning-tree portfas
    switchport access vlan 3
Use "switchport access vlan2" for your workstation ports.
The "ip http server" setting on switches/routers enables management via the web - on these old devices, turn it off, as it's next to useless. Type "no ip http server" in configuration mode.
There is no packet filtering or security enabled on these devices by default, so you can just sling whatever you like at the Apache server.
Unfortunately, owing to the fact you only have one ethernet port to uplink to the router, you will never be able to saturate the server. The best you will manage is 50 megabits per second (half in, half out) because you have to trunk back to the switch to get to the server. If you really need to flood the server, you either need a better router (one wit two ethernet ports) or a layer-3 capable switch (so you can eliminate the trunk and just use the in-built routing capabilities between subnets).
And finally - you won't be able to monitor protocols/ports using this hardware. You *could* setup a MONITOR/MIRROR port and use a separate PC running wireshark or something to monitor the trunk port, but that'd need additional hardware (PC's), and a bit more configuration.
Phew. Hope that helps a bit. Basically, to do the loading you want, you need better/different hardware, but you can come close with what you've got.
    Cheers.

  • Completed all Troubleshooting steps but continue to get slow downs from unresponsive scripts on Firefox. Is there a way to use my browser w/out slow downs?

    Mac OSX.
I've gone through the list of troubleshooting tips for slow downs and for unresponsive scripts. I continue to get slow downs to my computer and browser when I use my Firefox. It is becoming so bad that sometimes I cannot get work done.

And now, I think I've identified part of the issue. When you pin tabs as an app tab, this slows down Firefox in all the ways I mentioned. Please, please Firefox, if you are going to offer such a useful and simple thing, make sure that it works...
Having closed these App Tabs, I had a temporary break from the slow downs... Then after another few minutes, the slow downs in Firefox continued... At my wits end.

  • Flash player slowing down

I'm having kind of a weird problem with the flash player. I
recently was having a performance problem with a game I'm working
on where after playing for a while, it suddenly would slow down to
about half the normal framerate. I searched for the bug for a
while, but then I noticed it was happening with lots of other
people's flash games too, even though the same problems don't occur
on other computers. So I think somehow the Flash player is now
having some kind of problem specific to my computer. Here's the
    symptoms:
-As I run the flash, my CPU usage keeps going up but the
performance stays the same until it hits a sudden, major slowdown.
-If I've played a flash until the player slows down, then I
close it and open another one shortly, the new one will run slow,
too. If I wait a while, it will start out normal.
-This is just a guess, but it appears that flash that has to
redraw a lot every frame is having this problem the most. I have a
couple of games that don't change a lot each frame that don't have
    any problems.
Anyway, I know this is kind of ambiguous, but I'm really
hoping someone will recognize these symptoms and know what's wrong.
Please let me know if you have any guesses as to what's slowing
down the flash player, it's become very difficult to develop when I
can't run my own games at full speed for more than 30 seconds :P
    thanks,
    Max

O/S Windows XP Professional 32Bit + Ati Catalyst Drivers "10-2_legacy_xp32-64_dd_ccc" and I am generally using Firefox up to date.
I made yesterday an experiment, removed the 11th version of Flash Player Plugin & ActiveX, and installed from the archive the 10th version of plugin + 11th activex and then everything worked like it supposed to be - fine. But i have failed to install 10th version of ActiveX, i'ts just telling me that cannot be installed, some kind of error.
P.S. I think i've fixed my issues, i tried to install again from the Adobe Flash Player archive version 10.3.183.18 ActiveX & Plugin and i did it.Now .flv are running like 2 days ago - without any problems.
Maybe the thing is that my configuration is slow for the new version of the player,my CPU isn't multicore, but still it is not bad for the Adobe programmers to optimize the new version better for slower pc's.
    Cheers!

  • Slowing down Music

Does itunes have a feature that controls the speed of the music? I teach dancing and this feature would be helpful in my line of work. Also is there software which I can use to make the music length shorter or mix music together?
    Please advise
    Thx

Sorry but no, iTunes doesn't have any feature for slowing down or speeding up playback. You might look into The Amazing Slow Downer (a silly name, but decent software).
For editing music tracks, the freeware Audacity would be a place to start.

  • Lightroom workflow slows down after modifying an image

    Hi fellow users,
Lightroom 4.3 runs smoothly if I work on unmodified images.
However, if I apply modifications on an image, retouching it afterwards becomes much slower, even if I render a preview AFTER I made modifications on the image.
I tell you an example: I import a raw file to the program and I render it`s preview. Then I retouch the image - it works very fast, no waiting time, no Loading overlay.
Where the problem starts: I import a raw file, I apply some modifications on it (for example a preset), then I render it`s preview - then I want to do more modifications on the image, which becomes very slow.
I was monitoring the cpu usage of the computer. In the first case, the cpu usage during modifying the image is normal.
In the second case, it goes up to 100%.
It seems that applying modifications on an image makes working on it slow, no matter if you have the most up-to-date preview or not.
Anyone knows if it is normal or not?
Is there any solution to this?
    Thanks,
    Tamas
    My configuration:
Windows 7 64 bit (up to date)
    Lightroom 4.3 64 bit
    Fast PC
    lightroom settings:
    camera raw cache: 20gb
    video cache: 10gb

First of all, you can forget about the preview rendering, that's irrelevant. Previews are only used by the Library module, not the Develop module. In Develop, it's handled by the ACR cache.
Now, as for slowing down after initial adjustments, that's a variable I haven't looked out for. But it could well be correct (it would explain some weird results I got across two machines recently).
In general, Lightroom 4 performs well below expected standards on some systems, while others fly along, and it seems nobody can explain why. Long story, do a search on this forum and you'll come up with several lengthy threads. The problem is that there are so many variables in this that it's almost impossible to even define what "slow" means. And now you've added another (interesting) one...

  • Flash html5 - How can i make an internal movie clip slow down and stop when it get to a certain frame?

I am creating an automotive braking system using flash and have a wheel turning. I want the wheel to slow down and stop after the brake pedal is pushed at a certain frame. I know I could do this with frame by frame animation but was hoping there was a short cut - javascript?? If not the slowing down portion then is there code for just making the internal movie clip (wheel turning) to stop when it gets to a frame.? Thanks

you can use the ticker class to create a loop that you use to control the wheel's rotation or frame, TweenJS v0.6.0 API Documentation : Ticker

  • Slowing down or expanding a video clip in iMovie for iPhone 4

Is there a way to expand a short video clip in iMovie for iPhone 4? I can expand a still image, but not a video clip. I would like to take a video clip that lasts 2 seconds and expand it to 15 seconds or longer. The video clip could be slowed down.
I can do this with still images, so I would think I would be able to do this with video clips. For example, when I insert a still image it defaults to 2 seconds with the ken burns effect. I can then expand or shorten the still image to last as long as I want (from 2 seconds to 10 seconds, for example). However, when I insert a short video clip I am not given that option. When I grab the crop button and try to expand the video clip it stops at the end of the clip.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks Joe, hopefully Apple adds this feature to iMovie soon.

  • When I load a Flash based game site for my kids, the reload symbol spins continuously. The site slows down all browsing because of this. Why is this happening? How can I fix it? It has only started recently, in FF3.6 and in 4.

The site in question is webkinz.com, and once you log on to the game. I have tried Adblocker, and swept for sypware. I have reinstalled Flash, downgraded Flash, back to current version now. Tried in FF 3.6 and 4.
this is now happening on both PC's (Win 7 and XP) and the Laptop (Win 7).

You are right about high CPU usage. It was even when playing various computer games. I don't have problems anymore. But not because I disabled all addons. I did these things:
In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
Search for dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode in the list of preferences.
Double-click on the preference to toggle its value from false to true. (If the setting is already true it means that Flash Protected Mode is currently disabled.)
    Close Firefox.
    Restart Firefox.
And since then I don't have that particular problem with overloading. I just disabled some of flash protected mode. How is that related with "overloading"? Strage. Hardware acceleration I've enabled again as without it whole text field in news sites is sometimes black.
    Thanks anyway Mr.

  • Tips For Solving the Mac OS X Lion Slowness (Lots of Beach Balls)

    Hi Folks,
Just a quick list of tips for this issue that some of Mac OS X Lion users face.
The main symptom is that we get the Beach Ball on almost any task, it takes 4, maybe five times more time to do what we need to do. So depending on the schedule, it can drive us crazy. I was facing that, and started to think that Lion was a Windows Vista relative.
Please remind that the tips below involve backing up and restoring your system. If you are not careful, you may lose everything. You are responsible for your acts. Be cautious!
    How I solved my issue:
    1) Checked for Disk Permissions and the Disk itself:
    - Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility:
    - Click on your disk, and then VERIFY DISK. If everything is OK, move on. If it is not, REPAIR DISK.
    - Now click on VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. If everthing is OK, move. If not, Repair.
This step 1 is to make sure that your slowness is due to something related to the OS itself and not to permissions/disk.
If this solves the slowness, then you are OK. Now further steps are necessary. In my case, this just helped a little bit. The beach-balling reduced by 20% only. Still too slow.
    2) Do a full backup of your system.
I used Time Machine. Make sure you have all of your applications closed. So the backup will be full. If you fail to do a good backup, you will lose everything! Make sure you do a good one. Maybe do it twice on 2 different disks! Now you have been warned.
    3) Do a Full Restore of your entire system.
Now, get that Install CD that came with your Mac,
    - Put it on your drive, shut down your computer.
    - While holding the C key, press the start button of your Mac. It will boot using the Install CD that came with your Mac.
    To recover your entire system:
Connect your Time Machine backup disk to your computer. If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, make sure the disk has been repaired or replaced.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disk, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
    4) Remove the CD, and boot.
When I did that, the system came back very fast and responsive. No more beach balls (only on the really-intensive tasks), and everything was back to normal.
    5) So, what was it anyways?
Before doing this Backup/Restore, I was getting lots of DISK I/O ERRORS, specially during boot time (you can check that by shutting down your mac, powering it back on and imediatelly pressing Command-V - Verbose Mode).
Sure, the first thing in mind was that I had a faulty hard drive, but I checked it several times for errors (via Disk Utility), and nothing showed up.
So I decided to do a full backup/restore of the system. And it solved it, at least for me.
    My config:
    MacBook Pro (2009 edition) - 5 GB RAM - 640 GB HD - Mac OS X 10.7
    Regards.

Also my mac will not complete my 5 software updates, no idea which software, but it said it could not do it. Also backing up with time machine had failed twice today. Thanks

  • Premiere Pro performance suddenly slowed down to be virtually unusable, even for simple projects

I'm running latest Premiere Pro update on a late 2013, 27" iMac, with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB RAM, Mac osX version 10.9.5.  I know that's not a lot of RAM, but up until the past week or so I was able to edit an hour-long 4K project with that configuration, as long as I ran the Premiere session at 1/8 resolution.  It did drop some frames if I tried to play a long piece of it without stopping, but it was workable for editing purposes.  But in the past few days, the session has slowed down to the point where it starts serious frame dropping from the moment I push play, and is basically unusable.   It also drops audio, and I can hear the drives clattering frantically as soon as I hit play.   My media is on 2-TB G-drives connected via USB3.
    What I've tried so far...
    - Ran diagnostics on the drives, and it found no errors.
    - Tried linking the project to the identical files on the backup drive.  Same problem.
    - I made sure my Mac's energy saver settings were set so that the drives never go to sleep.
    - I deleted all the media caches and Premiere preview files I could find.
    - I reset the Spotlight privacy settings so that they do not index any external drives, and only a few folders on the internal drive.
    - I made sure I'm set to devote the maximum amount of memory (6.5 GB) to Premiere.
    - Finally updated my Premiere software to the latest version.
None of these things made any difference.
    - Then I thought maybe the session had just gotten too big and bloated for my system to handle.   So I made a new project and imported a simplified version of just one sequence, which only references some of my color-corrected video files.  That way I only have to have one external drive connected, and the session is referencing much smaller files.  Still no improvement.
    - So I tried an experiment where I made a brand new Premiere project and sequence.  I imported just 5 video files into it.  The largest file was less than 3GB.  (I do Protools editing on that computer with files much bigger than that, on the same type of extermal drives, with no issues at all.)  With only a single 5-second video clip (and no audio) in the timeline, it still starts dropping frames after about 2 seconds.  If I put another 5-second clip in the timeline, the frame dropping gets twice as bad.  If I try to put a video crossfade on them, playback gets so jerky it's unwatchable.
So basically, I started out being able to edit a 60-minute long 4K video project with video transitions and multiple tracks of audio and video.  (It wasn't perfect, but it was workable.)  And now suddenly, I can't play a brand new session that has 5 small video clips in it, and no audio.    So it's not just my project or sequences that are the problem.  Premiere just no longer seems to be able to access and play back my media with any kind of speed.
What am I missing?  Can you give me some additional suggestions to try that I haven't already mentioned above?  (And yes, I know a lot of you guys probably consider my hardware setup completely insufficient for what I'm doing, and you're probably right.  But it was working well enough for me up to this point.  I'm so close to the end of my project, and I'm really just trying to get back to the functionality I had a week ago, so I can finish.)
I'd appreciate any suggestions.  I feel like I'm running out of things to try.

After a lot of troubleshooting, it appears the problem is related to the color corrected version of my video not being able to play back fast enough.  While my system had no issue with the raw 4K camera files, the increased color depth of color corrected Pro Res versions are just too much for my drives to play back in real time, even at low resolution.   Unless I want to do considerable system upgrades (which I don't), the solution is to keep my color corrected and non-color corrected video stacked on top of each other in the timeline, and to deactivate the video track containing the color corrected ones.  Of course, I can turn the color corrected track on when I need to check something with it, but for playback functionality while editing, I'm limited to the raw camera files.
Obviously this is an imperfect solution.  But because I'm basically done editing and just need to do some title work and a little trimming, I can finish the project working that way.
Incidentally, tech support suggested major upgrades to my memory and video cards.  But if I were going to attempt to troubleshoot this further, I would upgrade to a better RAID system before I would do additional upgrades to my mac.  It really feels more likely that's the primary issue here.
