Editing unsupported RAW files.

Hi there,
Can anyone explain why I am able to edit an unsupported RAW file (DNG from a Ricoh GRD 3 camera) in Aperture 3. If it is not supported I would have expected that Aperture would be unable to read the data let alone process and edit the file.
Many thanks
Sean

But Aperture does support DNG's see http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/ under file formats.

  • Workflow for unsupported RAW files

Aperture doesn't recognize RAW images from my Leica D-Lux 2 so I will need to use ACR to convert the files. I'm wondering what other people have set up in terms of workflow for unsupported RAW files. I'm thinking I will have to open in PS, convert, save as TIFF, and then import into Aperture--keeping the original RAW files classified somewhere on my hard drive. Anyone have a better workflow idea?

I myself am in the same boat (unsupported RAW), what I've been doing is saving 16-bit TIFFS from my RAW editor and importing those into Aperture. I just batch convert first and load them in all at once.
When Linear PNG's are supported that is the option I will favor for import I think (until my camera's RAW format is supported, but I think linear RAW will come first).

  • Using Aperture 3.51 I am having frequent crashes and freez ups when editing Canon raw files?

    HI,
I have an IMac with 4 G of Ram and am using Apeture 3.51. When trying to edit CS2 raw files I experience frequent crashes and freez ups of the whole computer. Any suggestions?

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

  • No changes appear when batch editing Camera Raw Files and saving as jpegs

When I batch edit my raw files, including saving the file as a jpeg, from bridge or photoshop the resulting file saved never includes any changes I made in the Camera Raw editor. For example if I have lightened the photo by changing the exposure in Camera Raw as a saved jpeg after batching the file is still as dark as when originally shot. Is there some little box I forgot to check or something? Thanks!

I've seen something like this, but have not figured out why yet. In my situation I select a group of images in Bridge and go to Tools / Photoshop / Image Processor.
There I click the "open first image to apply settings" box.
    Save in Same Location
Save as JPEG, resize to fit (1200 pixels), Convert Profile to sRGB.
    No Action selected
    Include ICC Profile
Run it and in Camera Raw roll the saturation down to -100 (convert to b&W).
    Click "Open Image"
The process runs and the first image is converted to b&w, but the others are not.

I edit them in Lightroom. Then the little symbol appears in the bottom of the thumbnail in the film strip at the bottom of the LR screen. Then, a few minutes later, the symbol is gone. I then click on one or more of the thumbnails and the image opens in the main screen. However, all of the sliders on the right are at their defaults, and the image is back in its unedited state. Last night, for a while, the edits reappeared, but tonight they were gone again. I just recently downloaded Camera Raw 8.5. I wonder if that is the problem.
What little symbol?  Do you mean the up-arrow symbol that appears top-right of grid or film strip images?  This indicates that the image has been edited by another program.
Or do you mean the "+/-" symbol that appears bottom right?.  This appears after editing, but if it disappears subsequently without you doing anything, it sounds like something nasty is happening to the catalogue or image xmp file on disk.
Lightroom doesn't use ACR (8.5 or any other version) - it has the same functions built-in.  ACR is used only by Photoshop.  Are you opening the images in ACR in Photoshop?

  • Why cant I edit My raw files from Canon 6D

Why cant I edit My raw files from Canon 6D.

It is difficult to know why because we don't know what version is your PSE and what is your operating system.
That aside, if your camera is fairly new then first try to update your software by going to:
    Help >> Updates
If this doesn't solve then it may be that your camera is not supported by your PSE (mainly 10 and before) and so you may need to use DNG conversion utility.  The latest version is 8.1 but unpaid MVPs here will tell you more about it.

  • Image shows both NEF +JPEG, how do I know I'm editing the RAW file?

In the Library module I have images that show NEF+JPEG.  When I click on the image and go to the Develop module, how do I know that I'm editing the RAW file?

When you go to the develop module  (a.) The file type should be displayed and (b.) In the basic panel you will have the option to select the White Balance, if the file were jpeg or tiff i.e. an already rendered image it would only show embedded.  See screen capture.

  • Can I edit my RAW files from Aperture in Adobe Camera Raw in CS5?

I like Aperture for organizing my files and doing simple adjustments. I purchased CS5 and will be taking a class to learn more complex editing. Is there a way to store my photos in Aperture and get them into CS5's Camera Raw in the RAW format? When I try to do that they are tiff or jpg.

In the preferences you are able to select which file type you would like to export to an external editor, the assumption is that you have made basic corrections and accept the RAW processing in Aperture so want to work with a tif or jpeg.
If you are wanting to start from you camera RAW file, ie no processing, you will need to actually export the master file and work from it.

  • Direct editing of raw file from LR in Camera Raw?

Does anyone know if it is possible to take a camera raw file from lightroom and open it directly in Camera Raw for editing rather than use the editing in LR itself. I thought I read somewhere that it is possible to do this as an automatic setting - when choosing the "edit in Photoshop" menu option a raw file will be opened in Camera Raw and the changes tracked in LR. I prefer the Camera Raw interface in Ps so am hoping I can do this and then proceed on to Ps if I need to do further processing.  I am using LR4 and Ps6 on a Mac with the latest updates.  I am a recent convert to LR/Ps from Aperture so am still learning. Any help appreciated. Cheers

I would recommend exploring several of the free tutorials  on the Adobe TV web site, before deciding on a specific workflow. LR Develop Module does the same things that ACR Plugin does in PS, the major difference being LR stores the info in the LR Catalog while ACR stores the info in .xmp sidecar files or within the DNG file if you are using that option. • Edit IDML raw file?

I have a document here that is completely crashing in CS5.
It's an anchored frame and whenever I remove it InDesign crashes.
I tried exporting to IDML and opening that but it still crashes CS5.
Then I tried opening the IDML in Notepad, but it's nothing but code, which seems odd to me, I thought it was meant to be a variant of XML?
Anyways, I was wondering if it's possible to edit the IDML raw file so I can remove the anchored object in the actual file.
    Possible?

In case you need a special hint about the ID of a story inside an IDML file, one could look for its idmlComponentName through a JavaScript when a text frame is selected.
Just copy the following JavaScript to the ExtendScript Toolkit (ESTK), select the text frame on your page and run the script:
    #target InDesign;
    app.selection[0].parentStory.idmlComponentName;
As a result you will get something like that:
    Execution finished. Result: Story_u134
in the JavaScript Console of the ESTK.
The "u134"-part of the response could be used to identify the associated story of the selected text frame. It's written like <Story Self="u134" in the XML. For idmlComponentName does work with Story, Spread and MasterSpread.

  • Unsupported RAW Files

I doubt very much I am telling anyone anything they had not already worked out for themself, but today was the first time I'd shot a batch of RAW files with my Canon G1X in several weeks, so I was able to see how CS6 coped with them.  I knew they were not directly supported with CS6, but that they are supported by ACR6.7, so as discussed here already, I imported them as DNG files with Bridge CS5, and then switched to Bridge CS6 tp process them with PV2012.   It all worked perfectly of course.  There have been a few people complaining about cameras that were supportred with ACR6.7 which would not open in ACR7.  They must have CS5 to know that ACR6.7 worked, so in the remote chance any of them have stumbled upon the above workflow...  Now you know.
I'm still not entirely comfortable with ACR7.  It definitely works heaps better, but it is taking me much longer to home in on the right settings so far.

    VERY interesting.
I have had just the opposite experience with ACR 7.   To me, it feels like coming home, and I have been getting better images more quickly.
I have always had a fairly easy time of grokking the transform between turning a knob, seeing the results, then making the best of it I suppose.  What the various sliders in ACR 7 do seemed immediately clear and beyond that they just felt to me like "by golly THAT's what I've always wanted to be able to do").
Having worked with the prior version for all the years since the day it was released, through thousands of photos, I can say I was intimately familiar with ACR 6, yet ACR 7 just "feels" more right.  And I love that it produces better looking output at the fringes (it rescues highlights better, it fixes CA better, it keeps the image looking natural through extreme control adjustments better).
Only thing I would have done differently is that we see they've been organized so that what the software designers thought we should do is work generally top to bottom, and I admit that seems like a good idea, but to me I think breaking up Shadows and Blacks with Whites in between just seems odd.
If I had chosen the order of controls, I think I'd have put the four toning controls in order of brightness, e.g.,
    Exposure
    Contrast
    Blacks
    Shadows
    Highlights
    Whites
Or maybe the other way around.
But the way it is now is certainly something I can get used to.

  • Unable to edit my raw files after uploading

I am using PCS2 and windows XP. Canon 30-and-40D. I am just learning about photoshop and RAW files. I did go to the update 4.3 was unable to use so I down loaded DNG. I can convert the RAW files to jpig however I can't use them in bridge or photoshop as a RAW file to make the changes that I would like. After doing some reading on the forum I am still having problems. My plugin is 3.7. Is their anything in preferences that might need to be changed. Thank Joe

Personally, I wouldn't dismiss the idea of the DNG converter, at least until you get Lightroom and are comfortable with it. Just download the latest version and use it to create Digital negative copies of your raw images. You will still have your original raw images, and the image data in the DNG files is exactly the same image data. You can get identical results with the DNG file. And you will be able to use ACR 3.7 just as you always have been able to do.
Then, Lightroom is something that you can learn at your own pace. As you become more comfortable with it you will be able to work with the DNG files that you started working on with ACR 3.7. I think starting with the DNG converter would provide you with a good transition as you become familiar and comfortable with the new controls and the new interface in Lightroom.

I updated PS this morning, since then I am no longer able to edit a file in LIghtroom 4 as a smart object in Photoshop CC. • Editing Canon Raw Files in Iphoto

    Hello everybody,
I normally take pictures in RAW with Canon Eos 5d mark 3.
    My iphoto 9.6 on Yosemite.
Before the Update everything was working properly. Now It's impossible to edit my pictures.
When I try to edit a picture, this become almost green. How to solve the problem?
    Thanks

Unfortunately I still have the problem. When importing pictures via Canon Utility in iPhoto, the editing window was fine. But shutting down iphoto and re-opening the problem appears. So the problem is not related to the importing method.
I confirm that these are the pictures imported after Yosemite intallation. With mavericks it was ok. The old pictures are not affected.
The problem is also present opening the library in Aperture. Enclosed an example of  my turned "green" Picture
