Once upon a time there was a princess who was very sad. She had discovered that her favorite pet guinea pig had been kidnapped by a
n evil Chihuaha named "El Diablo". You see, it turns out El Diablo could not get a straight answer from Adobe Technical Support reg
arding what seemed like an incredibly simple question. So after endless attempts to get this question answered, he went quite insan
e and started kidnapping Guinea Pigs with the diabolical plan of starting his own software support company run by Guinea Pigs as the
y could not possibly offer worse support than he had been receiving. Alas, if someone had only just replied to his futile queries i
n a precise and meaningful fashion. But they did not. And so the Guinea Pigs - they must suffer. To be continued?

Please confirm that it is currently IMPOSSIBLE to edit audio or video in Premiere Pro 5.5 to measurements LESS THAN 1 frame.
It appears in versions prior to CS5.0 one could select AUDIO UNITS by right clicking timecode display to edit audio (and presumably
video for that matter) to SAMPLE RATE accuracy.
Despite a long and involved support phone call including taking control of our computer by remote, it appears this is NOT currently
possible.
If this is indeed so - we will have to adjust our work flow to edit audio OUTSIDE of Premiere.
Thank you...please confirm and advise.

Thank you for your input.
YES - I've seen the "right click Time Code display and switch to audio units timeline solution - yet audio units do NOT appear as an option for me...hence all of this drama.
ADOBE - do I have a munged install?  Any other advice?  We keep a clean system (Mac Pro 10.6.11 or whatever is last iteration of SL).  I guess I could try installing into a new User and see if it behaves any differently.
Sigh...we bailed on FCP7 after trying FCPX and also passed on going to Avid MC.  Hope PP is reliable for our work flow...again thx for all help.

  • How can I slide detached audio left/right in sample increments, rather than frame increments?

I exported a detached audio file from FCP X to Pro Tools for processing, and I have now imported the processed audio file back into FCP X.
I need to align the processed audio clip with the original audio clip. I am using View --> Zoom to Samples, and can see the amount I need to slide/nudge the processed clip in the Timeline. The problem is that the mis-alignment is smaller than a frame. This sounds small, but it is visually clear when you play the video/audio that the video and audio are not aligned.
    Question:
How can I elect to slide the audio left/right in the timeline in increments of the audio samples, rather than in increments of video frames?
Since FCP X allows you to view the audio in Samples, it certainly must somehow let you slide/nudge the audio in Samples........I just haven't found it.

Let's be clear about one thing. There is no way on earth any human being can percieve a one frame discrepancy in sync at a frame rate of 24fps or higher. Going to increments smaller than one frame, while it can be done, makes no difference to the way the media is viewed. Presumably your viewer will not have the benefit of multiple synced waveforms as a guide.
It sounds like you have an alignment problem in ProTools. This should be a incredibly simple to fix in that application.
The problem may laos be one of sample rate difference. What are the specs of your export audio file from FCP and the specs of your imported replacement file coming from ProTools. They should line up exactly if the sample rates are identical.

  • How to edit video to audio with a sub-frame precision?

As all of my other posts I must begin by stating that this is not an RTFM issue. I have read the manuals and searched the web and this forum already.
Also I beg you to read this question first before answering some nonsense. Ok, off the soapbox now.
I am having issue synching video to audio.
I am editing a music video at the moment at 23.976 fps. There is a master sound track (48/16) to which all of the video must be synched.
I have not found a way of changing the position of a video clips in the timeline relative of the master audio track with a higher than a frame precision in order to obtain a perfect lip-sync.
I am aware of the fact that one should enable "display audio units" in the timeline in order to shift an audio track relative the video with the sub frame precision, which is very useful when doing dialogue replacement to a video. For the video I am still not able to do so. Is it at all possible? Is there a workaround?
How do they achieve a perfect lipsync when they make professional music videos?
    Thank you!

Actually, you can set markers on the audio clip between frames.  I rember this from Jacob Robenbergs book Premiere Pro 2.0 Studio Techniques.
You double click on the audio clip.  It opens in the Source monitor.  Then click on the fly-out menu and select SHOW AUDIO UNITS.
Now in the source monitor you can place a marker (to be used for syncing) anyhere within the frame.  Set a numbered marker.
Now you have a sync marker intraframe on the Audio.  You then sync this audio marker the Frame you need. Select both clips and choose syncronize.
So it is not sub video frame, it is sub Audio frame to the correct video frame start.
See below.  The audio sync marker is in the middle of the frame.  Hope this helps.

  • IMovie lags when editing video and audio

I just bought iMovie yesterday from the Mac App Store. I recorded a DJ set and wanted to edit my Video with better quality audio that i recorded seperately. I find that when editing my video and audio (Matching up audio), there is alot of lag. Especially when scrolling through the video to drag the audio to a certain point to get the audio in sync. This is very frustrating and i feel i just got cheated paying for iMovie 11 when it cant even do a simple job. Please help me resolve this. Thank you!

    Hi
This is not easy in iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 -
What and how did You record the extra audio ? With what tool ?
To be able to keep audio in sync should be recorded with a device with TimeCode. Else it will be near to impossibly. Or extremely tedious even if FinalCut is used.
I would use FinalCut and keep original audio on track 1 and 2 - and the extra on track 3 and 4. Then Show Wave-form - then see if they can match up to each others.
But doing this in iMovie - is nearly impossibly.
IF AUDIO HAS - TimeCode - and there are no drop outs on video or audio then You should be able to exchange original audio with the extra recorded one in iMovie and even move it frame by frame (1/30 sec or 1/25 sec) - in FinalCut audio can be moved much more exact eg 1/100 sec or within a frame
(my miniDisc recorder - is FAR away from exact enough for this)

  • Edit Video to Audio

Hi: I'm new to Final Cut Pro X, but not to video or editing. I want to edit video to an audio track; how to start?
I cut my first 16mm film mag stripe nearly 40 years ago; This is just a bit different!
Thanks for any help you can provide.

    htyh
    adam
Just two quick notes about this:
    1) in this case, you'll want a secondary storyline, not a compound clip; and you don't actually need to create it, as it will be created automatically when you try to add said transition.
    2) I don't find this cumbersome at all... storylines relate to, well, stories... and telling stories is what it is all about
well yes of course I'm only speaking for myself. But i find the creation of storylines/ compund clips cumbersome coz it changes the relationship of my clips to each other in the timeline, and that can be important. And when someway further down the line I want to remove the dissolve and I dont need that new storyline I have to go through some steps to get back to where I was with the clips.
and on the other point, sorry no telling stories is not what its all about, Certainly in some kind of edits it is the main point, but in other projects, there is no stroy telling, just shots cut to music with effects on them, and in those cases sometimes the storyline/compund clip can be a PITA, especially since you cant lock the order that they render in.
But this is just my workflow problems, wont be true for everyone.

  • Can LabVIEW threads sleep in increments less than a millisecond?

I am aware of two LabVIEW sleep functions:
    1) All Functions | Time & Dialog | "Wait (ms)"
    2) All Functions | Time & Dialog | "Wait Until Next ms Multiple"
In this day and age, when 3GHz processors sell for less than $200, it seems to me that a millisecond is an eternity. Is there any way to tell your LabVIEW threads to sleep for something less than a millisecond?
In Java, the standard Thread.sleep() method is written in milliseconds [sorry, the bulletin board software won't let me link directly]:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/Thread.html#sleep(long)
but there is a second version of the method that allows for the possiblity of nanoseconds:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/Thread.html#sleep(long, int)
So there does seem to be some consensus that millisecond sleep times are getting a little long in the tooth...

    Hi Tarheel !
May be you should get some idea of the kind of timing accuracy that you can reach when using a loop.
Use the attached vi, which runs repeatedly a For loop (10 iterations) reading the time, then calculate the average and standard deviation of the time difference between the loop iterations.
On my PC (P4, 2.6 MHz, W2K), I get a standard deviation of about 8 ms, which appears to be independent of the sleep duration I asked for.
Same thing with a timed loop.
Under MacOS X (PowerBook, 1.5GHz), the SD falls down to 0.4 ms.
I tried to disable most of the background processes running on my PC, but I could not get a better resolution.
Seems that the issue is not in LV but on the way the OS manage its internal reference clock.
Since you are a Java afficionado, may be you could produce something equivalent ?
A proof that nanosecond resolution is available on a PC could be of great help to NI. Why bother with costly timers on DAQ cards ?
By the way, it took me about one minute to create the attached vi. I would like to have an idea of the time required to do the same thing in Java.

  • Editing video and audio tracks together in timeline

I've had problems regarding the editing of audio and video tracks. For example, if I have a clip (1v, 2a tracks) that I put in the timeline and try to cut it using the razor blade, it will only cut the video track. Before, I used to be able to click only once and all the associated tracks (the 2 audio ones in this example) cut together at the same point. I know it's possibly a keyboard shortcut or something like that, but I've looked and looked and now it's making me crazy.

You probably need to turn Linking on (Command L). There is a little button on the upper right corner of the timeline that looks like a chain, click it.
If that doesn't work, you could use the Blade All tool, press B twice.

  • Edit video TO audio track

Er, how are you supposed to edit the video to an audio track as in making a music video where the video has to be lined up to the audio track?
Why is there no timeline? This looks like a big step backwards if this function is gone.
    Vinny.

    Hi Vinny
This seems to be the major drawback - making use of iMovie 08 near NON.
I will stay with iM HD 6, FCE and FCP. May be it is Apple way of pushing
    uppward and forward.
SO THEY OUGHT TO REDUCE THE PRICE WITH SAME as for the investment of
iLife 08 for the people that goes for FinalCutExpress !!
This was the most disapointing upgrade I've seen so far.

  • Edit video and audio at the same time

Is it possible when I remove some of the audio to also remove the same amount of that time from the video?

    Lilybiri,
We did record both the audio and video at the same time in Captivate 8.
The question is: how do we edit the audio and video at the same time?
If I want to cut out 5 seconds of audio can I or will the software cut out that same portion of the video and if so how do we do it?
Do we need to create a Demo or Software Simulation to be able to take advantage of this tool for cutting both together.
Your assistance is very much appreciated.

  • Moving photos and videos from iPhone, to iPhoto, to external harddrive. Videos come out to be less than 0 seconds. HELP, PLEASE!

Hi guys! This is my first discussion and I'm not exactly sure what kind of details to put, so I'll just be as detailed as possible. I hope I don't confuse anyone. I really REALLY need help!
I've got a 16 GB iPhone 4S and always find myself filling up my phone with photos and videos, so I upload both onto my MacBook Pro 2011. Now that my laptop's getting full... I'm uploading all of those backed up photos and videos onto a 500 GB Seagate external harddrive.
All of my photos open just fine. It's the videos that I'm worried about. All of the videos that I've loaded from last year (2013) are playing well. Anything before 2013 aren't opening properly. I'm opening the video files directly from my external harddrive. It goes:
         1) Opens up QuickTime Player
         2) Shows that it's converting
         3) Shows a frame from the video, but the time says 0:00-0:00.
I had a LOT of videos from before 2013 and would like to retrieve them if possible. They're no longer on my laptop though. All of the video files are 20 KB - 980 KB and has to convert on quicktime player for me to watch them. Some of the video files I've tried out were from 2013 and 24 KB and opened just fine. I've opened both ~20KB - ~900 KB video files before 2013 and they're all 0:00-0:00 time length. Anyone else having this problem? Thanks!

I have the same issue.  We've lost all of our older videos including videos of our children and since passed family dog.  I have no idea why this has happened.  I have backed up religiously, but now even the archived photos are 0 seconds.  So frustrated with iPhoto.  This is the second time this awful software mysteriously lost pictures or videos.  Last time it was the birth pictures of my second daughter.  And now this.  Horrible horrible product.
Older videos are all now just 0:00:00 in length.  We did not alter these at all!!
    HELP!!

  • What can I do about error -50 in a video with only short clips (less than 1 sec)?

I get Error -50 when trying to export a music video with lots of short clips I just made in imovie 8.0.6. After googleing the problem i realize that its probably the short clips (under 1 sec) that are the problem.
Is there any way to get around this?
    Would really appriciate the help!!!

As a test Depress an hold the option key while launching iPhoto - create a new test  library and import a few photos into it - report back with the results and if this problem repeats in the new test library

  • Is there a way to slide a clip less than one frame?

Hi, When syncing audio to video, or lining up two different sources of the same audio, I sometimes find that I want to slide a clip less than one frame in the timeline. Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks, Bob

You can slip the audio in sub-frame increments, but you cannot slip video as the frame is the basic unit.
To slip the audio in increments less than a frame, see:

  • Mac Preview Rotate (Less Than 90 Degrees)

So I've been browsing the internet for a solution. Usually I'd use photoshop, but it was torrented... And on my old PC.. So I don't use that anymore... Anyways, I have images on my desktop (Mostly YouTube Thumbnails and Profile Backgrounds) and I need the preview app to rotate images in less than 90 degrees.. Is there some sort of mod to do that? (I'm sort of new to iMacs, so I'm not sure if there's mods... Haha) Could I go into the program files and change that? If there is no way to change that, is there a program that is strongly similar to the Preview app that I could use? (I want to keep my editing simple..)
    -Manny

To rotate less than 90 degrees you might be able to use the straighten tool in iPhoto. If you have iPhoto installed then try it out  to see if that does what you need. It is really made for straightening an image (as the name implies) but does do image rotation ± 45º
If that doesn't do it for you (or you don;t have iPhoto installed) then you will need to use an image compositor such as PS. GIMP is a free image editor like PS and with version 2.8 it runs native on OS X no need to install X11 to use it anymore.
See GIMP for the native version and GIMP.org for more info.
