Editing Video Podcasts

I have a bunch of video podcasts, specifically tutorials. Some have only a few minutes out of an hour that I actually wanna keep. So I want to edit them down, nothing fancy, just shorter. I figured I'd use Windows Movie Maker cause I don't want to download any extra software. Possible?

I have the exact same problem here Jason, only in my case the project is merely 15 mins long...
I noticed the audio sync issues on exported files (needed it as a QT HD to play in front of a whole school assembly) about half way through the audio would go miles out - well over a minute adrift.
Having read some posts I decided to detach the audio as you did, it let me do this for a while then about half way through I got the beach ball and likewise I'm now stuck with an urgent essential project that I can't do anything with. This is on a brand new 27" i7 iMac with all the updates, and no other projects. It's like the dark days of Pinnacle on windows, I thought this stuff was supposed to just work!
Does anyone have any suggestions on a fix - I've repaired permissions, tried trashing the iMovie prefs etc but it still hangs every time.

  • Editing incorrect video Podcast Metadata / Tag

Anyone have a solution for correcting a Podcast's hidden metadata tags so iTunes will properly identify a Podcast instead of filing it as a Movie?
Besides Lostify and vID_Infiltr8, which do not have the Podcast stik tag, or at least I couldn't find it anywhere.
I have nine TEDTalks video Podcasts that iTunes files as Movies. There are a total of 64 TEDTalks video Podcasts available, but iTMS only offers 55 of them. I downloaded 14 directly from TEDTalks and iTunes recognized 5 of them correctly, it is the remaining 9 that need metadata added or corrected so that iTunes will properly identify them as Podcasts instead of Movies.
I know this should probably be in the Producing Podcasts thread, but this sort of question is sort of beneath that level of technicality, know what I mean?

OK. This is yet another reason why I get frustrated with Apple at times. They INSIST on doing things FOR me without telling me when they do it or why (iTunes gapless playback scan for example).
On that note, IMO it's a bit arrogant of Apple to add proprietary and non-editable tags to the ID3 standard. You can change the Video Type in iTunes, but unless you use some cumbersome 3rd party utility or the import/export method mentioned in other posts, there is NO way to change the podcast flag.
Unfortunately, the iPod itself uses the same tag/database structure as iTunes, so if you use Anapod (as I do) to transfer files, you have no control over how videos and podcasts show up on the pod (Red Chair Software has yet to respond to my inquiries about adding this ability).
Edit the video type in iTunes? Sure. Problem is, it seems Anapod's database structure differs slightly from iTunes... If you mount an Anapod-managed iPod in iTunes, when you unmount and try to play files on the iPod itself, only the ones that were played in iTunes will play!!! All other tracks will get skipped over until you rebuild the database in Anapod.
Now, my wife has my old iPod photo with all my music on it, and she likes iTunes. When she opened the iPod in iTunes, about 1/4 of the tracks were labeled as podcasts (some with explicit content...lol). Of course when she later tried to play music on the iPod itself, everything would skip and I had to rebuild the database (as mentioned above). Now she uses Winamp with no trouble.
So... Does anyone know of a GUI (not command-line) based method of editing these "hidden" tags?
Sorry for ranting but thanks for listening.

  • Video Podcasts on 6th edition

I am having a problem viewing my Happy Tree Friends podcast. The audio works fine, but the video freezes. Is anyone else having a similar problem or is it specific to my ipod?... I just bought mine today.

You can sync any kind of podcast you like. If it is a video podcast, it is just going to take the audio and play it on the nano. It will use a frame from the video as "Album Art", but won't play the video.

  • Video podcasts won't sync.

I subscribe to The Soup Video Podcasts. I had no problem syncing them to my ipod 3G, until I had to replace my harddrive. I erased the songs on my ipod, and synced it with itunes after I had replaced the songs. Now, everytime I sync my ipod, it won't let me put the podcasts on because it says my ipod does not support the videos, but they worked fine before I had to replace my harddrive. Any suggestions?
edit: I'm not sure if videos will sync. I haven't tried yet.

It might be that the format of the video is not compatable with iPOD - MEANING... that the video is not in MPEG-4 format. You could try to download a video conversion program to change the format. Or use Quicktime Pro.
Try to Google for: "video convert to/for ipod" if you don't have Quicktime Pro, or any other software that can do the same.

  • How do you Chapter Video Podcasts in Final Cut Pro Studio 2

I am in final cut pro studio 2. I have my video setup like I want. I placed Markers and labeled them as chapters. But when I try to export i just get a chapterless video. How on earth do i get this to work. I tried exporting with Compressor and exporting with Quicktime pro. I just want to make a chaptered video podcast why is it so darn hard to do so? I went hunting everywhere on the net and nothing explains just how to do it in Final Cut Pro. Everything is iMovie this iMovie that .... well sorry, but I don't want to use stinking iMovie.
Sorry for venting I'm just really aggravated because I have tried four different things hoping it would work but each export which is two hours of wasted time that I fall more behind.

    Hi Patrick,
My FCP experience is limited - I write software add-ons for it, but I don't edit. I remember this issue coming up before though. QuickTime has the ability to create chapter tracks, but you can't do this from markers in FCP. (I used to do it with the great QuickTime editor in Adobe GoLive.)
The chapter tracks in .mp4 video are similar but different to the QuickTime chapter tracks, so I assume that the FCP markers won't work. Frustrating!
Why don't you try out PodcastMaker free for 30 days: http://www.lemonzdream.com/podcastmaker/ This software is very easy to use and (outside of Garageband) is the easiest way to add chapter tracks to a podcast, and even though it's an extra step, it will help you with the podcasting side of the workflow you'll eventually be faced with.

  • Video podcasts won't play, cause ipod to freeze

    Hi there,
My 5.5g ipod won't play video podcasts. I've downloaded several different ones, made sure the "TV Out" is turned off, and played with several other settings, all to no avail. When I open one from the video>video podcasts menu, the screen goes black, sometimes it says "Loading" with the little "play" arrow in the top left corner, and that's all I get. It freezes, and I have to reset.
I've also tried restoring the ipod to factory conditions, which didn't work. The podcasts play in iTunes, so that's not the problem.
    This thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8969818&#8969818
also seems to describe my problem, but I can't find a solution there.
Anybody have any ideas for how to fix this? Thanks!

It's up to the producers of the podcast whether they make their video podcasts iPod compatible or not. It's certainly not a requirement for an iTunes Podcast feed which is, perhaps, unfortunate. You could try sending the producer feedback but even if they take any notice it won't affect podcasts you've already downloaded. The *Make iPod compatible version* rarely works (somthing to do with whether audio & video are separate or multiplexed to start with). I suggest you download SUPER which is capable of converting almost anything to an iPod version. You have to navigate through a bunch of links before you get to the actual download, but it is there - just ignore the links to other commercial software on the way, SUPER is free.
    tt2
PS. On my current setup SUPER generates the odd error message while running but still produces a working output file...

  • After update to itunes 9 video podcast don't work

    Hello together,
after updating itunes to vers. 9 my saved video podcast with dhe filetypesMPEG-4 Movie don't run. Also in Quicktime in the filefolder the files cannot be found as a video file. Quicktime itselve says, that it cannot read this filetype. Also after bying the mpeg2 extension , support told me that it have to be reinstalled, the videos don't work. who knows the solution for that?.
    Thanks for a feedback

Quicktime itselve says, that it cannot read this filetype.
Hmmm. Launch your QuickTime Player. Now go "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime preferences." Click the file types tab.
Expand "MPEG - MPEG System, video and audio files".
Are "MPEG Media" and "MPEG-4 Media" both currently checked? If not, check them and click okay. Does QuickTime now play the file?

  • Video Podcast not showing up in Category listings on ITMS

I've created a video podcast, submitted it to ITMS, it was approved and has been available for 2 weeks now.
    My main category is INVESTING.
When I search the ITMS for my podcast by name, two of the three formats (iPod & iPhone) of my podcast are correctly listed (the HD version is curiously not listed in a search, but is available using the link provided by the ITMS).
But, when I browse the INVESTING category, none of them are listed.
When I view my podcast in the ITMS after searching for it, the categories appear to be set correctly (INVESTING, TRAINING) in each of them.
Why? What can I do to have it listed in the Category browse windows?
    Thanks!
    Doug
Message was edited by: Doug Forman

Sorry to say, but the "browse" feature in the iTMS seems to be on the fritz, with no immediate fix in sight. The category/subcategory listings appear to have a limit on the number of podcasts that are able to be displayed (about 1000), so until this is fixed or iTunes cleans house and gets rid of dead podcasts, you are unfortunately out of luck. Welcome to the club.

  • Video podcast help.

i everyone, is it possible to put just the audio from a video podcast to say an ipod mini?

Possible... Yes... but not likely. It will depend some what on the file type they are using. You would need digital content editing software, and know how to use it. So you are probably beat.
If you really want to try google for copying the audio track(s) from video files.

  • Video podcast format for iPods

I created a video podcast and the RSS feed was successfully accepted by iTunes.
The first two episodes download through iTunes fine. The only problem is that the video file would not transfer to any video iPod. The first two episodes were 320x240 .mov files.
So, I read some sites and found out that it needed to be a .m4v file. I edit the show in iMovie. After finishing the third episode, I used iMovie to "Share to iPod" which I figured would format the file into a proper format for an iPod.
The 3rd episode is uploaded onto the RSS feed, but iTunes doesn't recognize this and make the file available for download. It still only has the first two episodes for download.
Any suggestions? Do I need to use Quicktime Pro and use that to convert the files?
If it helps, here is a link to the feed in iTunes.
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=214350353
Thanks for the help in advance.

I dont know about doing it the "easy" way with apps that do all the work for you. Here it is the "hard" manual way.
You should create a graphic specifically for this purpose and upload that JPEG file to the pace where your podcast episodes are hosted. Then you can post the URL of the picture into your RSS feed, in the top part where all the main info about your podcast is. It should look like this:
    <itunes:image href="http://www.kutvfreshair.com/podcast/bloopersLogo.jpg" />
where the "href" is the http of your picture.

  • No video on video podcasts

I recently got a video podcast from the iTunes store. It downloaded, and I synced my ipod (60 gig). I go to play it on my ipod, and all I get is audio. I don't get any video. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. I tried the method you showed, but it did not work.
Also, in Itunes, where it shows memory usage, it says memory is used, but nothing shows up in the usage bar for video (it does for audio).

  • Submit Video Podcast XML Error

    Hey there all!
For some reason, whenever I try to submit my video podcast to the iTunes store, I keep getting this message.
"Error parsing feed: Invalis XML: Error on line 322: Element type "ahrefs.length" must be followed by either attribute specifications, ">" or "/>"
    The feed is located:
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/fiveoaks
    Website:
    www.fiveoakspodcast.com
and according to all of the tests that I can run in feedburner, everything is working great. I can manually subscribe to the feed in iTunes, and I can get it through other catchers, any ideas what's wrong here? Please help!

I assume this is one programme title. It sounds as though the Podcast's producers have changed the format of their Podcasts. Yes, they may still be MPEG-4 but if the bit rate has been increased beyond the capability of your iPod, that's why they don't transfer.
    Check this page, http://support.apple.com/kb/SP26 which gives the video support information for the 5th gen (late 2006) iPod. It's a bit techy, (I have trouble following it all) but look at this, it refers to H.264 not MPEG-4, but hopefully you get the idea;
5th gen iPod early/late spec is *H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels,*
while the iPod Classic spec is *H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels.*
So the Podcast's producers could have created a version that plays on the iPod Classic but not on the 5th gen. If so, it's just one of those things that progress throws up.
One last thing (for the benefit of those who don't know), all Podcasts are produced independently of iTunes/Apple and the idea is that Podcasts are universal. So each Podcast programme may have been produced with non-iPod owners in mind. Yes, there really are such beings on the planet.

  • Download and playback of video podcasts and vodcasts

    Hi Folks,
I have looked at the Classic features manual, looking for info on downloading *video podcasts* and Vodcasts into itunes, and playing them in ipod Classic. I couldn't get from the manual what I needed to understand the video issue . Does anyone have any advice, anything that I should know, or do, before downloading and playing these two types of video? I have read bits here and there about having to chang format of videos for successful download to itunes and playback on Classic. I am not techy enough to understand. (Just as info, I downloaded "Best of YouTube." It promptly locked itunes forever. I couldn't even uninstall itunes and reinstall. I had to create another User on my computer, in order to get itunes again.)
    Questions:
    1) Do I have to do some sort of conversion to download and play *video podcasts* and Vodcasts?
    2) Are *video podcasts* different from Vodcasts? Or are they the same format--just named differently? Is there anything that I need to do differently in the download process and playback of these two types of video? (FYI--The Bill Moyers show on PBS is where I was confronted with the *Vodcast.
    Thank you
    Randy

you don't need additional tools to load the podcast or video podcast to your ipod, excepting an ipod manager like itunes, floola or juice.
Just provide the feed into the ipod manager that you use and you are done. Probably the simplest option is to go with itunes. You need an internet connection though.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcasts.html

EDIT: Well, Juice is not really an ipod manager, but a podcast manager/receiver

  • Video Podcast Transfer Error

ipod is giving a message that video podcasts cannot be transferred because they are not in the proper format. If we totally erase and then re-subscribe, the podcasts before 1/7 seem to transfer properly. Ones after that date give wrong format error. Get info on both gives the same type name of MPEG-4.
    Any Ideas?

  • Some of my Movies and video podcasts won't upload to my ipod touch

I've been uploading my dvd collection on to my computer through a handy application called handbreak, the main reason for this was so I could watch it on my ipod touch on its beautiful display, but the problem is that it won't upload because the video says the ipod won't support it. I checked the format, mp4 which works in itunes fine, then I checked the size of each and they were quite big since I set the encoding to normal but It should upload even if it's a little big. Another problem is with my video podcasts, some of their HD content won't transfer over, this majority blows because I don't want to compress every single episode. Why is it not working?, and could their be a solution to this besides compressing each file in quicktime pro?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Right click on the video (or select multiple videos and right click) and choose "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone".

At least on my iMac, it only takes a few seconds.
