Editing Voice Tracks in Garage Band

Can you/ how do you edit voice tracks in Garage Band?
In particular, editting out/ deleting pauses in spoken voice tracks.
Is Music Project of Podcasting the best for the spoken word in terms of post production capabilities?
Thanks!

If you are only doing a little voice editing then, as
HangTime says, you can do it reasonably well in Garge
band. However if you have any amount to do you would
find it easier with a proper audio editor. Audacity
is free but flaky: I would recommend spending $25 on
Amadeus II:
http://www.hairersoft.com.
There is also Amadeus Pro which is $40 and has basic
multitrack facilities, but for straightforward
editing Amadeus II will be fine. It can also open and
save in a variety of formats and make use of both
Audio Units and VST plugins.
I do all kinds of voice work, lots of it musical so I like GB.
But I also do voice overs. 30 - 60 sec. commercials, presentaions and the like, so if I can just have some modest editting capability and add jingles I'd like to just stick with GB if possible.
I've only had GB a few days now.
Thanks again.

  • How do I get a voice over from garage band into Final cut x?

How do I get a voice over from garage band into Final cut x?  Sorry if this is a newbie question.  I have been editing in final Cut express on my MacBook Pro and just jumped to a new iMac and Final Cut ProX.  Trying to record my own voice on a Yeti mic and import it as narration for a video.  Thought I could simply import media but X has it greyed out.

Sharing with iTunes is OK, but it is likely to produce a file in MP3 or AAC, which can cause problems. You can create an AIFF version of an MP3 file in iTunes and use that.
To create an AIFF version, go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General Tab. Click the Import Settings button. Choose Import Using: AIFF Encoder. Then choose your track, and click FILE/CREATE AIFF Version. Use this in FCPX. Be sure to go back into iTunes Preferences and set the import options back to where you had it, so the next time you rip an CD it does not make an AIFF.

  • Can I create chapters in an audio track in Garage Band?

Can I create chapters in an audio track in Garage Band? I want to be able to find sections quickly. Or is there another more podcast oriented application that will do this?
    Thanks!

    Hello Jack,
You can add chapter markers to a podcast track or a movie track, not to an audio track.
Dragging any still image to the time line in GarageBand will create a podcast track: This image will be used as icon/artwork for your poadcast: See

  • Can anyone tell me how to slow down a commerical track in Garage Band 10.00.  I was able to do it quite easily before I updated, but now find I am unable to do it.  Would be grateful for any help

Can anyone tell me how to slow down a commercial track in Garage band 10.00  I was able to do this in the earlier version of Garage Band quite easily and it is a good tool for being able to teach new dances, but I find I am unable to do it in the new version, which has just been updated.  I would be grateful for any help.

    Just found it.
Select your track with song imported from iTunes, open the Track Editor window, and in the head of the track editor  and press the "Flex" marker. Make sure "Enable Flex" is set,
Then change the tempo of your project.

  • HOW DO I CHANGE THE PITCH OF A MP3 TRACK IN GARAGE BAND 10.0.02

HOW DO I CHANGE THE PITCH OF A MP3 TRACK IN GARAGE BAND 10.0.02 , i could do it in old version looking at the you tube video, now the screen looks different cant find how to do it. Can some one put up a video please
    Thanks

    There are three ways:
Use an AuPitch filter on the track
Or turn the audio region into a loop
Enable "Follow Tempo and Pitch" for the track and use the transposition slider (that does not always work reliably)
    To add an AuPitch filter:
Enable the audio Units in the GarageBand Preferences and then open the Smart Controls.
To add the AuPitch filter audio unit, click the Audio Unit button and enlarge the Smart Controls pane by dragging the dividing line to the Track Area upwards.
click the Audio Units Brick and add the AuPitch filter:
Type the pitch change in cents (100 cents per half note step) into the text field below the pitch control.
To create a loop from the audio file:
Select the region in the track and use the command "File: Add region to Loop library".
Set the current key and tempo, name the loop, and save the loop.
Now add it from the loop browser to a new track and delete your old track. The search field in the Loop browser will help you to find the loop quickly.
You will be able to transpose the sample like a regular loo by changing the project key.

  • Cannot import voice over from garage band into FCP-X

cannot import voice over from garage band into FCP-X

    Try:
Share > Send Song to iTunes. In the dialog, turn OFF compress. That will create an .aiff version of your GB project.
Alternately, you can Share to iTunes. When iTunes opens, right click on the selection and select Create AIFF version.
When iTunes opens, right click on the selection and select Show In Finder -> drag it out to a more convenient location (or option-click-drag to make a duplicate in the new location you drag to.)
    Import that file into FCPX.

  • Editing tracks in garage band

I have been using Garage Band to create a sound track for a Keynote presentation. I imported a number of songs from iTunes into Garage Band and placed them in two tracks, using the volume controls on each track to transition from one song to another. In doing so, I ran into two issues.
    1) I got the timing of some of the musical pieces just right, but others were either too long or too short for the accompanying slides in Keynote. If one section was too long or too short, but other sections of the soundtrack were just right, there was no way to select the region representing all that was just right and move that either forward or backward on the timeline WITH the volume changes on the tracks. I could move the musical pieces, but then the volume changes that created the transition from one song segment to another were in the wrong place on the timeline.
    2) To deal with the first problem, I thought about making multiple copies of my Garage band project and then delete the segments before and after the segment that was correct. But if, for example, I want to use only the part of the project from 4:30 to 6:25 on the time line, there is no way to delete the first 4 and a half minutes and delete what comes after 6:30. I can remove everything before and after, but then I have a 4:30 segment with no sound before the segment I want.
It would seem that there should be an easy way to make this kind of edit in the program, but I couldn't figure out how. I'd appreciate any help.

    1. Indeed, when you move regions, the volume curves don't move with them - you have to do it by hand. It annoys a lot of people.
    2. Of yourse you can select all regions and pull them to the left so your song starts at 0:00. But again, the volume curves won't move with them.
To avoid this messing around, I'd suggest you first compose your music segments without volume curves, but with overlapping regions (you can shorten them so they only overlap where you later want to set the fade) and keep pushing them around until they fit your presentation. And do the crossfades only in the end when everything else is perfect.

  • Voice Recorders and Garage Band

I am very new to Garage Band and I'm not sure it can do what I need it to.
I need a voice recorder that I can edit. I am familiar with Sony's voice recorders and their editing software, but I haven't seen anyone make Mac compatible editing software for their voice recorders. I recently bought the Belkin TuneTalk stereo for iPod, sounds great on my iTunes, but I would like to edit parts of the track out. I tried importing it to garage band but the playback was super fast. Is this an impossible task? do I need to convert the file when I import it into Garage Band? Any help either on how to make what I have work or suggestions of other devices or software would be appreciated.

The newest GarageBand (GarageBand 10.0) does no longer allow to add effects freely, each patch as predefined effect setting.
Use the nice tool "GBEffectFinder", to see which patches will support the effects you need. Download GBEffectFinder here from Bullets&BOnes:  http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/File%20Pages/GBEffectFinder.html
The EpicDiva will be available in GarageBand 10.0, if you did not uninstall GarageBand '11, when you updated. Then you find the old GarageBand patches in the "legacy" section, e.g. "Legacy > GarageBand > Voices > Epicc Diva".
The upgrader will have moved your GarageBAbd '11 to a subfolder of Applcations. If you did not uninstall it, you can still use it.
If you did not yet do it, use the command "GarageBand > Restore Purchase", if you previously owned an earlier version.  Expanding GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) content with an in-app purchase
You can use both versions of GarageBand cuncurrently, the previous '11(version 6.0.5) and the new GarageBAnd 10.0. They do not interfere.

  • Podcast voice recording on Garage Band

I'm trying to use garageband for a podcast but my voice sounds like l'm in a tunnel. How can I change that? I'm using logitech earphones with speaker micro which work very well for skype but sounds different (not as good) on garage band. Any ideas for me anyone?

Make sure that all the audio effects are off. Click on the little i symbol in the bottom right corner and then edit near the top. It is probably reverb or an echo, those are near the bottom right again. Left side of each one there is a little rectangle that is blue if it is on. Click it to turn it off. Hope this helps!

  • Voice Over in Garage Band

I was using Final Cut Express HD to make a Voice Over, but I was told that Garage Band makes a better VO. I made my VO in Garage Band and it sounded great. I open Final Cut and could not import the VO.

Seek and you will find, I found this in garage band help:
You can send a project containing a podcast track to iTunes as a podcast. The podcast track must be visible when you export the project. When you send a podcast to iTunes, the podcast file is a compressed (AAC) file rather than an uncompressed (AIFF) file.
To send a podcast to iTunes:
If the podcast track is hidden, choose Track > Show Podcast Track.
Choose Share > Send Podcast to iTunes.
You can also export a project containing a podcast track to disk as a podcast by choosing Share > Export Podcast to Disk.
If the podcast track is hidden when you send the project to iTunes, the command Send Song to iTunes appears in the menu. Choosing this command exports only the audio in AIFF format.

  • Voice Over using Garage Band

I would love to hear from anyone using GarageBand for Voice Over work. I started out using Pro Tools but found too many technical problems and the learning curve was very steep. Anyone out there successfully using GarageBand for Voice Over?

I think you'll find that Garage Band is too basic for everything that you'll need to do as a voice-over artist. It'll lay audio, and you can make some basic edits, but it's really not meant for any kind of professional voice-over applications.
Pro Tools LE certainly has its challenges, but stick with it and ask people questions when you get stuck. It's the recording industry standard for audio recording and editing, so I'll pay dividends to get comfortable with it. A lot of the applications you won't need for voice-over work, as some of the stuff is just meant for music recording and editing. • What's with the brand new imac's not being able to handle 3 tracks in garage band? This is crap!

I have been so dissapointed by Lion i'm thinking about selling the brand new Imac. No Rosettta?! So i cant use Final Cut express anymore or CS3, and I don't WANT TO UPGRADE> And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many? I can work better on my 2008 macbook!!!!

And Even Garage band cannot play more than 3 tracks without saying there are too many?
There must be something wrong. A brand-new iMac should really perform better.
What model did you buy (Processor, how much disk space, how much RAM)? Can it be, that your harddrive is too full with less than 15 GB of free space, or the iMac has not enough RAM? Lion needs a bit more memory than Snow did.

  • I am trying to make a mix on Garage Band by dropping songs in the tracks from an ITunes playlist.  I have done this many many times and suddenly I am unable to drop the tracks into Garage band.  They swoosh right back into the iTunes playlist

Suddenly I am unable to transfer songs from iTunes to Garage Band.  When I try to bring the songs over to Garage Band they will not drop into the track.  They immediately go back into iTunes.  I have made many mixes using GB and cannot figure out what has happened.  Ive looked through system prefences, help window, etc. and cannot understand what has happened.  Any advice?

either use the Media Browser in GB, or drop the actual song file into the timeline (cmnd-shift-r will reveal the file from iTunes):

  • Editing FCE audio with Garage Band?

I've never tried to edit FCE audio with anything except FCE itself and SoundSoap. Can Garage Band edit FCE audio without messing up the video? I seem to recall trying to edit FCE audio with Audacity once, but lost the video information when I saved the edit. I never tried it again. It would be nice to be able to cut and past a bit of ambient room noise to cover some unwanted audio.

    Martin,
I thought I'd tried that before and was not successful. I'll try again. And I'll resolve to be more persistent and not give up at the first obstacle.
I recall seeing a tutorial of SoundTrack Pro where you could copy and replace a bit of audio. I suppose that's too much to ask of FCE or the now departed SoundTrack?

  • Editing audio and samples- garage band fit for the job?

    hey folks,
I'm rather new to Garage band but know other applications quite well (i'm an Acid & soundforge convert).
A few questions to help get me up to speed.
Garage band is great for loops and recording but what about editing samples and existing files?
For example, I have hours of recorded sounds from the streets, etc that I'd like to chop up into loops. Im having trouble zeroing in with garage band on start and endpoints for cropping...
Is Garage band an 'all in one' or are you expected to use an external editing software to do this? IF so, what software are most people using for this?
next question. any easy way to reverse a file in Garage band??? how about use your mouse cursor to define the start point in playback (Kind of important when you're zeroing in while editin).
Sorry for the loaded questions = these are my roadblocks right now...

what about editing samples and existing files?
An audio editor is a better chocie for, well, editing audio:
