Edits in Finder sidebar disappears after reboot

Hi,
When I change the content of Finders sidebar the changes I make disappears after a reboot. Doesn't that indicate something wrong??

Personally I have not enabled the root account and have no intention of ever doing so. I think the problem is really that the .DS_Store file is not being rewritten, perhaps because of the permissions. I would simply remove the .DS_Store file from the affected folders and then arrange those folders as you want them to be and close the folders. This will create a new .DS_Store file with new settings for the folders. As the .DS_Store files are invisible you will either have to use one of the many utilities that allow you to show invisible files or use the Terminal remove command. If the problem is the permissions you may have to authenticate to remove the files, or use a sudo remove command.

  • Folder aliases put in "PLACES" on sidebar disappear after rebooting

I recently got a Mac mini and when I set it up I imported my user settings, applications, etc. from my old "Macintosh HD" volume I took out of my G5 Mac running OS X 10.4.11. I can drag folders onto the sidebar under "PLACES", but every time I reboot, they are no longer there. Can anyone tell me why this is happening or how to fix it so they stay there?
I think it may be a problem related to the location of the folders. They are on an external drive that I turn on and mount after I boot up my Mac. So maybe they are being removed because the target locations of the folders are no longer there? Is there a workaround for this so that they will stay on the sidebar even when the drive is not mounted?
    Thanks,
    Mike

the only way to do that is to make actual aliases of those folders first and store those aliases somewhere on the main hard drive. then you can drag those aliases to the sidebar instead of the original items and they will stay there on drive disconnects. alternatively, you can put the originals in the toolbar instead of the sidebar and they will stay there too.

  • Local copy idisk folders added to sidebar disappear after restart

Folders from a local idisk copy added to the finder sidebar continually disappear after restart. Any idea how to prevent this?

    a workaround:
you can lock this file via command + i
    Library > Preferences > com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    to keep your sidebar setting,
    then reboot
    or
    open Terminal and write:
defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem 1 < this will add a Quit command to the Finder
    then:
    killall Finder
Quit the Finder via Command + Q every time you mount iDisk...
it works for me, use at your own risk

  • AEBS disappears after reboot?

I'm experiencing quite a peculiar problem, but I hope that it has been solved before.
I'm running a home network with three Dell computers running Windows XP connected to a Airport Extreme base station extended by an Airport Express unit. But each time a computer is rebooted, it is unable to locate the base station and can only locate the Express unit. Seeing as the base station is connected to the internet, all computers find themselves disconnected. I can, however, fix it by unplugging and then reconnected the AEBS to power.
Any advice on a solution would be awfully helpful. Thanks in advance!

Seemingly unable to edit my post, I shamelessly doublepost. It would seem that it is not the computer reboots per say that causes the trouble. The AEBS just disappears after a while. My only guess would be that it has something to do with the DHCP renewal process that makes all my computers unable to locate it.
Another setting which I am not so sure of is "IPv6-mode". What difference does this setting do, and is it ideal to be set to "Tunnel" as it is at the moment?

  • Firewire camera disappear after reboot

    Hello all,
    I've the following system configuration:

     - Adlink SBC 852
     - 1GB Ram
     - CPU DUAL CORE E2200 socket 77
     - firewire cable: 10 m
     - firewire board: PCI dual ohci 1.1 IEEE-1394
     - Windows SP2
    Sequence of events:
1 - Fresh windows XP home edition installation
    2 - Computer drivers
    3 - Firewire cameras installation
    4 - Our  application installation
5 - testing. check if it's all ok
6 - Power off and wait some minutes
7 - turn on and test again
This steps where made in one day - all ok ..... In the next day:
8 - Turn on the system and check. And fine check of the system results.
9 - At 12:00 all seems to be ok and for delivering the system i decided to do one more test, rebooting the system.
10 - Error - cameras doesn't appear on MAX and had a controller exclamation mark on the device manager.
    Solution:
11 - Update controller on device manager
12 - Open max and select again Imaqdx driver on the 4 cameras
So... I've a situation that after reboot may cause the cameras to disappear!
    Any ideas?

    Hello Jorge,
    I suggest
you to re-install or Update to NI-IMAQ for IEEE 1394 Cameras Version 1.5.2 or
Later. If you are using NI-IMAQ for 1394  Cameras version 1.5.1 or
earlier, you may need to install a patch to update the NI-IMAQ for IEEE 1394
    Cameras driver to version 1.5.3.

  • Printer disappearing after reboot

I have several Windows 2008R2 Citrix Xenapp 6.5 servers. I am trying to install a Midmark PDF printer. I can install it fine, but when I reboot the server, it just goes away. Does anybody have any ideas? I have been using the install package from
Midmark, but I also tied it manually, (it uses the Amyuni Doc Converter 400 and the null port.) I can manually add it, but again on reboot, the thing disappears out of Devices and Printers. Midmark doesn't have any suggestions. On ONE citrix server it actually
stays. I am not sure of the difference (if any) between the server where it stays and the others where it disappears on reboot. Anybody have any suggestions?

    Hello David ,
I assume Midmark PDF is tools to take print out in PDF format from Midmark application ,if so have you contacted midmark tech team ?
Could you please let us know if you have installed any other printer except Midmark PDF and what about your print spool service after restart.
If print services are running fine check event log related to that and share with us ,mean time you may uninstall  Mid mark and try ABBYY PDF transformer+ ,By doing this you can come to conclusion  if any compatibility problem have .This product
is easy to use and save time due to the some good features and way of doing. If you are using msoffice then I hope you will like the plugin features of ABBYY PDF transformer+(http://download.abbyy.com/pdft_plus/).

    I am running a Mac Pro, 5,1, 12-core 2.4, 28GB RAM.

    Hello ywchai!
I made a test on my computer and added to my kyeboards (German, French, Russian) the "Chinese Simplified". After restart everything was as expected. How did you upgrade to Mountain Lion. Did you made a clean install?
What happens, if you start with Shift? Does the Chinese keyboard is in the menu?

macbook pro, Mac OSX Leopard:  I had exactly the same problem, and neither of the suggestions above does anything. A power shutdown shuts down of course, but again the spinning wheel and no dock. This first happened after the latest Mac OS X security update installed June 27 I believe.  Immediately after the update the system had this problem; then  worked for a few times;  and now it is back with spinning disk/no dock,  and every time I try to power off and on again it reappears.

  • Finder Error immediately after Reboot or Restart

I have a new top spec MacBook Pro Retina Display - only several weeks old. A few days ago after every reboot, or startup after a shutdown I get an error message immediately as the system is online saying that there was an error launching Finder. If I close the prompt and launch Finder it works fine but it's disconcerting getting that message everytime after launch and I'm concerned it's symptomatic of more serious underlying hardware issue. (Although machine seems to run using Chrome, iTunes and various photography editing software) - has anyone seen this issue before?
The error message is long but the top part is as follows:

Assuming you have pooling enabled, bouncing the db invalidates the entire pool of connections.
ODP doesn't check the connection when it pulls it out of the pool, it just hands it to you, so it didn't know the connection was bad.
There are basically 4 ways to deal with this:
    1) Use the ClearPool api call to clear out all the connections in the pool.. http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/E10927_01/featConnecting.htm#CJAGDAGG
    2) Add "validate connection=true" to your connection string, and ODP will check to make sure the connection is good before handing it to you. It adds overhead because it checks every connection every time you call con.Open, so you'll want to check the impact in your environment.
    3) Catch the exception, Dispose of the Connection, and try again. ODP will remove the connection from the pool at that point , but there will still be other bad connections until you do that enough times to clear the pool out yourself.
    4) Restart your app.
If you know the db was bounced and don't want to restart the app, the ClearPool call is probably the best solution.
    Hope it helps,
    Greg

  • Finder sidebar broken after 10.5.6 upgrade

    Hallo everyone
After upgrading my MacPro using the full combo update, I have the following problem with the Finder:
If you collapse all disclosure triangles on the sidebar and expnad them again, the display of all icons and labels is completly messed up.
Labels are overlapping and clicking does break the highlighted rows.
Can somebody confirm they have the same issue?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Patrick,
You may want to refresh the Sidebar plist file by dragging the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and confirm your settings in Finder>Preferences...>Sidebar

  • IMac 2007 freezes after sleep and then can't find hard drive after reboot.

I'm having a problem where my mid 2007 iMac (2.4 GHz core duo w/ 6 Gb of ram) freezes after sleep.  It seems to happen only when an application was open at the time of sleep.  The freeze manifests as the cursor turns into the spinning wheel, but the computer can't do anything.  Command-option escape doesn't work.  Most of the time after I reboot, the iMac can't find the hard drive.  If I leave the computer off for 15 minutes then it will reboot ok.  Is my hard drive going out or do I have another problem?  I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.5.  I've repaired permissions, verified the hard drive and reset the NVram but I still have the problem.

Here is the console right before the time of the crash.

  • Finder unresponsive even after reboot

    History:
I had an iMac G4 800 (OSX 4.11) connected to an Intel iMac (White Model OSX 7.5) via firewire 400 and had shared my internet from the intel mac to the G4 through the firewire as the G4 doesn't have wifi.
I had wanted to transfer files from the intel mac to the G4.
I proceeded to transfer files over the firewire.
all the files where being transferred to the desktop
One of the files was a movie, 2.3 gb in size.
When the process began to transfer the movie the Finder began creating multiple icons of the movie. In no time the desktop was filled with icons with this movie.
    Computer froze.
    What I've done:
After realizing that the computer was frozen I did a hard shutdown. Unplugged the firewire and restarted the computer.
Computer booted fine, but the finder was unresponsive.
Went into activity Monitor and saw that the Finder was not responding.
Did a force quit. Finder would quit no problem and restart, but after the restart of the finder it would resume the process that it was stuck in. None of the icons would show on the desktop. CPU usage was running at 60% and memory would increase slowly until all available was used ( I have 1GB of memory)
Did a hard shut down and left it over night, rebooted and no change.
Left computer on all day and night figured I'll let the computer do it's thing hoping it would resolve itself, that did not work.
Went into terminal and did a "killall Finder"
Reacted the same way as force quitting in activity monitor.
….. Now I'm at a lost… Never seen this happen before. It seems like the finder is stuck in a loop or process or something and it doesn't want to give it up.

As a near last resort, you could boot from the install  DVD and choose to archive & install
a new system folder, then update that to the last step (via Combo update) and see what
else isn't in the new folder that you need or want. Several of these would need to be fully
re-installed if not available, when third-party software; especially if they had key codes.
{A full system clone-copy on external FW enclosure would be a means to restore the Mac.
    Also that's a better way to make a backup since it would be a complete one of everything.}
Other terminal or command-line effort may have been able to restore use of the Finder.
However I'm not sufficiently experienced with accessing or changes via Terminal to offer
any suggestion. And the word 'terminal' can have more than one meaning, in this matter.
The manual code or processes available via Terminal or command-line are cryptic.
Hopefully someone such as BDAqua or Linc Davis, among others, may help there.
The use of the install-restore DVD to try 'repair' and 'repair disk permissions' may
also be worth a go; you need not reinstall a new system/folder to try these...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • User profile disappeared after reboot

I rebooted my MBP Retina today. When booted back up I couldn't log in, wouldn't take my password. I booted into recovery mode to reset the password vua terminal. My user profile was not there, so I reset the password of another profile, logged in, checked users & groups again, my profile is not there. WHen I borwse the disk the folder structure of my username is there but profile is not. - Can i recover from this? I do NOT have a time machine backup.

    Hello jimjimk
All you would have to is go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and then create the user again. Pay attention to what you are creating and at least make sure that the short name is the same name as the folder in the Users folder. Once that is don’t you should see and alert that states A folder in the Users folder already has the name "short name". Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" just say yes, log out and then log back in to the user that was just created and all should be good.
How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2196
    8. Use the Accounts pane in System Preferences to create a new user with the same short name as the home folder moved in the previous step.
    9. Click OK when prompted with "A folder in the Users folder already has the name  "short name".  Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?". This will correct the ownership on all files in the Home.
    10. Log out.
    11. Log in as the user created in the previous step.
