EDL with markers?

Is it possible to include sequence markers in an EDL?

(is this the best way to do this?)
I don't believe so.  Here's the process I recommend for best results.
1. Create a sequence matching the specs of your footage.
2. Add your clips.
3. Sync manually.
4. Create a second sequence matching the first.
5. Nest the first sequence into the second.
6. Right click on that nested sequence and choose Multi-Camera>Enable
7. Turn on the Multi-camera view in the Program Monitor.
8. Play the sequence in real time, switch angles using keyboard shortcuts.  If you make a mistake, leave it for later.
9. When you're done with the first pass in real time, go back to the normal view in the Program Monitor.
10. Move through the sequence a second time, cut by cut, tweaking as necessary with the Rolling Edit tool (shortcut N).

  • My troubles with Markers in Premiere

I’m editing a feature documentary in Adobe Premiere CC (latest update) on my MacBook Pro 2014 w/ Mavericks.
I have about 100 hours of source footage that I’m logging using Comment Markers in Premiere.
The problem I’m facing in this workflow is dealing with multichannel audio files. Our sound engineer recorded sound using a Sound Devices 644 6-channel mixer/recorder that saves to 24-bit multichannel .WAV-files. I sometimes have 5 mono tracks with wireless microphones and a boom. I need to sync these audio files to the footage first, before I’m able to properly spot and log what I have. The camera scratch track is insufficient to do this properly, since it sometimes only contains camera-audio, or a mix of different channels, with people being in different locations at the same time. So, I need to be able to mute channels to reveal the content of each audio track separately.
Unfortunately, I’m unable to use Prelude for the logging process, since that program does not give me the option to synchronize my external audio with the footage first, using the embedded timecode in both video and audio files. I also don’t want to transcode, re-wrap or combine audio and video
    originals into new (intermediate) files.
So, my conclusion is that I have to use Premiere Pro’s Marker functionality. First, I made sequences for each day we recorded footage. On those sequences, I synced the footage with the corresponding multichannel audio tracks. Then, I decided to make markers in the source clips of either the video (description of what we see, like insert shot, or listening shot, or an event) or the audio (description of what we hear / what people say).
Having worked this way for a couple of weeks, the following bugs / annoyances pop-up:
1 – If I add a comment marker to track 3 (out of 4) of a multichannel audiofile, that comment is also visible in tracks 1, 2 and 4. It doesn’t matter if I unlink the audiotracks first. The comment will stay visible in all tracks. This is not useful, since sometimes, different things are said in different audiotracks of the same file. I suppose this has something to do with the way Premiere handles multichannel audio-files and the fact that they are saved in one file. I guess the workaround has to be the hassle of splitting all audio into separate files, without losing the original timecode, but tt would be much better if Premiere just gave me the option to create separate markers for each individual audio track of a multichannel file.
2 – It’s hard to create overlapping comment markers. Sometimes a part of a clip needs to be logged/commented in two different categories and then it would be nice to have overlapping markers in the same clip. I believe this is possible in Prelude and transports well to Premiere, but Premiere does not really give a good way to do it itself.
3 – When I create a marker (M), I have to alt-click on it in the Source-window to be able to expand the range of that marker. I can then add comment text in either the Markers Panel, or in the pop-up window when I double-click the marker. This works well with shorter clips, but the problem starts with longer clips, like a 30-minute interview. At some point, when I alt-click and then drag the handle to expand the marker, the playhead of the Source timeline jumps back to a position somewhere in the middle of the clip. It does not stay with the marker I just created/expanded. This is a really big annoyance, because then I have to scroll back to that part I was working on. Is there some way or setting to stick to the place in the source clip I’m working on?
4 – Eventually, the Markers in my clip (either in the video or audio clips) show up in the Markers Panel. I now have a scrollable overview that can also be searched. But now the following problem arises: If I search for a specific marker and want to jump to that marker in the content, I click on the marker in the list. It will now nicely go to that place in the Source window of the corresponding audio clip. But how can I reveal exactly that position in the corresponding clip in my sequence? Because only there, it is synced with my video… Of course, I can visually see the markers and the beginning of their text content in my sequence too, but it would be really nice to have a „reveal in sequence” button somewhere. Working with Sequence Markers as an alternative would look problematic to me. I want to be able to pancake sequences and copy clips from a sequence of selects to my main edit, with all comment markers transporting nicely. Furthermore, I like the idea of comment markers being saved in the XMP of the source clip. I have selected this option in the Preferences.
5 – For some strange reason, sometimes comment markers are not saved in the audio file. I have a multichannel .WAV file, which contains 4 mono channels of audio. I added markers to this clip, closed my sequence, opened it again and the markers were still there. But when I saved my project,  closed Premiere and re-opened it again, the markers were gone. This happens not with all multichannel .WAV-files, but it happens sometimes and I haven’t discovered the reason yet. On this specific example (T22.wav) I can recreate the error. I checked the file and it’s not read-only or something. So, it just feels like a total random thing and not a very reliable function of Adobe Premiere.
6 – This brings me to other usability issues regarding Markers in Premiere. As I have understood, there is no proper option to globally search for (comment) markers in the entire project. To me, in 2015, this appears very silly and I’m sure Adobe is working on a solution. My workaround now is to export the markers in each clip to a .CSV-file and combine those in Excel. Then, I have a complete overview of all markers in my project. What I feel lacks is that the .CSV-file does not export the Marker color. I use the colors to make visual indicators of categories. For example: a red markers means: important! An orange marker is a question etc. It would be really nice to have an additional column in the CSV indicating just the name of the color. I would be better of course, if Adobe seriously fixes the global search thing.
To conclude, many of the problems I’m facing originate from the fact that I work with double system audio, where the audio is saved in multichannel audio-files, that need to be synced using timecode. Although this is a pretty standard procedure, it feels like Adobe Premiere Pro CC has some issues that I would like to see resolved in future upgrades. I hope my post could benefit to this.
Furthermore, If anyone feels that I’m using completely the wrong workflow and has useful suggestions, I’m all ears! I’m still in the beginning phase of the edit. It took me a while to ingest all files, create the file structure and sequences and properly sync all the audio, but if I’m doing something wrong, I rather hear it now than at the end.
Thanks and my apologies for this exhaustive post.

Meanwhile, I have found a workaround for this problem:
    9. – When I have finished adding Comment Markers to a file, I export it's audio to a WAV from Prelude. This WAV-file will also contain the newly created markers. Then I send the WAV to my co-editor and he places the WAV under the original audio in his timeline. Now the extra .WAV-file will function as a 'guide track' which shows the markers. The audio channel can be muted.
It would make much more sense if Premiere always checks if a .XMP on the disk has been updated or added, when it is mounting the media upon opening the project file. Or even better: Premiere should update the Markers in the timeline in realtime, when the .XMP has changed.
Having said this, we found the following behavior of Premiere, when media and .XMP's on the disk are replaced:
    – Sony F5 / Sony PMW-100 / Canon XF200 .MXF + .XMP, only .XMP with new metadata is replaced on co-editor disk: Comment markers are MIXED with markers that were already present in the clip. Some markers get lost, because of conflicting timecodes?
    – Canon C300 .MXF + .XMP, only .XMP with new metadata is replaced on co-editor disk; Comment markers DO NOT show up in timeline. Re-import and re-placement of file in timeline is necessary (including syncing with external audio)
    – .MOV Quicktime container (entire .MOV has to be replaced on co-editor disk, since metadata is saved in Quicktime container): Comment markers are MIXED with markers that were already present in the clip. Some markers get lost, because of conflicting timecodes?
    – .WAV-files: Comment markers properly update on timeline.
I'm curious to see if the upcoming 2015 update contains improved functionality and bugfixes regarding .XMP metadata (e.g. Comment Markers) and sharing media. I'm especially curious about the new Adobe Anywhere functionality for small teams.

  • Import EDL with FCE?

I checked the FCP forum and there seems to be a facility with that app to import an EDL (edit decision list) from the File menu, but this doesn't seem to be an option with FCE.
    Any workaround suggestions appreciated.
I have a project I've been working on in another NLE, which I am transiting to FCE, and which has generated a complete EDL with timecode and shot/clip listings. I could transfer it manually to a new FCE project, but it could take forever. Seems like there should be a way for FCE to look at the data and map it in.
    Thanks,
    Keith

Sorry no. You need FCP for this.

  • Is it possible to import disc at once with markers to the tracks?

I now have to import my cd's twice. Once, so I have access to all the tracks and once for the disc at once. All I want is to be able to play the album like a CD. Listen to the thing as a whole and have access to each track if I wish. Why can't apple add this simple application to itunes? It would free up so much hard drive space. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Fatbrando,
"Is it possible to import disc at once with markers to the tracks?"
    No, it's not.
But if you are trying to get gapless playback from something like a continuously mixed dance CD you could try this.
Chec Crossfade playback in iTunes>Preferences>Playback and then setting the slider to 0 yields pretty good results. Not perfect, but pretty good.
This will only effect playback in iTunes, not CDs you burn from iTunes.

  • Premiere sends EDL with 'invalid timecode format string'

Following the suggestions in this thread, I am attempting to send an EDL of a Premiere sequence to Speedgrade.
When I attempt to import the EDL into Speedgrade I get this error message:
    ERROR
In point timecode is invalid. Invalid timecode format string(hours): '23813+20'
    in edit 1
    File: 001 LR001 V C 2813+20 23815+17 0:00 1+37
    Line: 2
I've worked very rarely with EDLs but have read the Speedgrade and Premiere guides. I must be missing something but can't tell what.  Here's the details from my project:
I'm editing in 24fps. The video files are generated in After Effects from DPX files. The timecode is based on the DPX file names, with the hour matching the Lab Roll number (so 11:00:00 for Roll 11)
I export an EDL in CMX3600 format. I've tried both default settings and without audio. Same results. I even get the same result if I make a sequence from a single clip and try exporting that EDL.
I don't think this is a Speedgrade issue, because if I try re-importing the EDL into Premiere, it seems like all the clips are only one frame long.
Any suggestions about what I might be doing incorrectly would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lev

Are you wanting to just simply go from Premiere to Speedgrade? If so why not just use the "send to speedgrade" choice. Also I wanted to point out in the original thread you actually said you didn't want to use speedgrade, I've never used a EDL with speedgrade so I have 0 ideas there, but have you tried just using Premiere's built in send to speedgrade function?

  • Export .wav with markers from Audition into Premiere Pro CS5.5

    Hi,
I need help in getting a multitrack mixdown with markers from Audition into Premiere.
    This is what I have:
An Audition CS5.5 multitrack session with lots of markers
This is what I did to export:
Audition > File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown > Entire Session > .wav & "include markers and other metadata"
When I import that .wav in Premiere Pro there are no markers, neither in the source monitor, nor in the sequence.
When I import it into After Effects, all markers are there. Unfortunately, this does not help me in my editing in Premiere.
Is there any workaround for that? A direkt export from Audition via
Multitrack > Export to Premiere Pro
    did not help either.
There is a thread on this in Soundtbooth (sorry for posting there, too) where it is stated that it should work in Premiere, too:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3908899#3908899
    Please help, regards,
    Andreas

    Hi Tim,
first of all, thank you for your help.
I also just filed a bug report, as you suggested.
Now let me share the results of checking out the workaround that you suggested:
    1. Export to Premiere Pro via "Mulitrack menu > Export to Adobe Premiere Pro"
I had tried that before and found it not working. This was a partial mistake. What I mean by that is, when you do that, the exported .wav files get automatically added to the sequence timeline. And do not show markers. BUT, what I overlooked was, that there is a sequence created alongside which resides in the project panel. This sequence does in fact include the markers, as sequence markers.
Now comes the bitter part: When I delete the automatically added .wav from the timeline and replace it with said sequence, the markers are treated as clip markers. By contrast to After Effects, in Premiere Pro clip markers do not contain any text / names. I.e. all metadata is lost except the mere fact of anonymous markers on the timeline.
    2. Export to Premiere Pro via " File menu > Export > FCP XML Interchange Format"
Same as above. Except, that I had not tried that before. What I had tried before was ...
    3. Export via " File menu > Export > OMF"
Interestingly, this cannot be imported in Premiere Pro at all. Could this be another bug?
    Comment:
I really hope that the markers export/import gets fixed soon.
I also wished, that clip markers in Premiere Pro would be as intelligent as in After Effects (naming, updating, showing their text clearly in the timeline)
I also wished that sequence markers would be as intelligent as comp markers in After Effects in showing their text clearly in the timeline.
... but thats a lot of wishing going on
    Kind regards,
    Andreas

  • Shared Project Workflow Problem: Hitting a Wall with Markers

    Hi there,
Apologies in advance for the long note.  We're using Adobe CC to edit and finish commercials and are having a significant issue regarding shared project workflow.  First, some context:
We often edit projects remotely.  When this happens, assistants and other editors who remain in LA will have access to the media on our SAN while the editor and assistant traveling out of town will have their own copy of the media.  I know Adobe Anywhere would solve any issue relating to two identical sets of media in use in different cities, but we're a small shop and the hardware and software expense don't make sense for us at this time.  Please do not respond to anything mentioned from here on by stating we should just get Adobe Anywhere.  Thanks.
What will regularly happen is that the remote editor and assistant will need work done on the project here in LA while they're in session with the clients.  Sometimes this work involves marking up clips with comment markers so the editor can more easily locate a specific moment.  Here's where the problem arises.
Unlike FCP and Avid, Premiere handles markers within the clip's metadata.  So, if I have two separate projects linking to separate but identical instances of media, one of those media instances gets updated with new markers, there is currently no way to get those markers to the other project without also shuttling the new marked-up media.  This is not possible when a remote editor needs dailies marked up in a couple hours and is working across the country or abroad.
But let's assume for the sake of argument that it is possible and we apply this workflow.  Let's also assume that in the time it takes the local assistant to mark up the clips for the remote editor, the editor has added a couple markers of his own, which is reasonable and happens all the time.  Now when the editor links to the newly marked up clips he's received via shipment, he'll wipe out all the markers he's made on his own since giving the order to mark up the footage.  That is a significant inconvenience, especially with clients in the room asking stuff like "can we look at the take where the guy says 'good' instead of 'great'?"
So what happens if we just have repeating sets of media, so that every time the clips markers get updated, the editor actually imports those clips, even though the picture and audio data in those clips is completely redundant to what's already in the project.  The issues with this are, as I can see it, 1) increasing the amount complexity within the project so that you'd have to scan many bins of dailies to look for a single marker, 2) increasing by orders of magnitude the amount of storage space needed, 3) even if problems 1 and 2 are handled, if you have to go to finish with multiple versions of a cut, and those versions reference separate instances of the same clip from different bins, Premiere's dupe frame detection will not work and you'll need to spend a lot of extra time locating duplicate clips manually before sending your EDL or XML off to final color grading.
At this point, I think it's necessary to interject something:  we're talking about markers here.  Why is this such a problem?  FCP and Avid have no such issues simply by making markers - even clip markers - part of the project metadata.  From what I understand, Adobe has chosen to do things differently because of dynamic link, so that After Effects and Prelude, for example, could add markers to a clip and those markers would ripple across all instances of that clip in the different applications.  It's a great feature which we take advantage of here from time to time.
    So what's the solution?
My workaround in CS6, which does not solve the issue of needing to merge clip markers so that an editor's markers and an assistant's markers can be applied to a single piece of media, was to turn off "write XMP ID to Files on Import."  This would generate an XMP sidecar file which could be easily passed along with a project file to the remote editor, who could then overwrite his local XMP sidecars with the new ones containing the new marker info.
However, in Premiere CC that is no longer possible.  It appears that if Premiere CC can access the XMP ID on a file, it will not generate a sidecar regardless of what you have set in your media preferences.  We use ProRes Proxy as our dailies format (again, please no comments on this, it is not up for debate at this time) and Premiere can get to the XMP ID within the files and will not, no matter what it seems, generate an XMP sidecar.
We could change the company workflow to use DNxHD 36 instead of ProRes Proxy, which would give us XMP sidecars, but that would not solve the issue of needing to merge marker lists between projects non-destructively.
The best solution I can think of would be to have a script or some kind or built-in feature which would allow for the batch export, import and merging of marker lists.  This way Adobe could keep its current clip-metadata-based marker workflow while giving professional users needing more flexible marker behavior the ability to have assistants non-destructively modify clip markers without necessitating the creation of extra media or project complexity.
I would really love some input on this and ideas from the pro community out there who has experience with shared project workflows - especially projects being shared remotely.  There's not a lot of info out there about this and it would be great to hear what others are doing.
Thanks a million for sticking with this, if you've made it this far.
    Best,
    Jon

    Thanks Jim,
I understand that Adobe Anywhere solves this, but there should be this fairly basic functionality (which exists in Avid and FCP) in a non-enterprise edition of the software.  I have submitted a couple different feature requests about this, going back to CS5, so hopefully enough people make similar requests for a fix to be implemented.  Adobe Anywhere is really not a solution for our small shop as currently configured/priced, especially when we can have editors working remotely with very affordable USB 3 drives.  The only hangup is the markers, which just isn't worth a 5 figure fix.  As such it's hard to consider the problem solved for either us or any small shop or post crew.
    Best,
    Jon

  • FCE: Problem with markers

I dont understand this behaviour. Say, I 'have a clip 'Clip 1' with two markers 'Marker 1' and 'Marker 2'. These are shown in the browser. When I now double click on Marker 1 in the browser, the viewer shows the clip from Marker 1 to Marker 2 in the viewer. But it is not positioned on Marker 1, it is somewhere between Marker 1 and Marker 2, sometimes it is positioned to Marker 2.
I dont understand this, could anyone please explain?
    TIA

Ah, this might be my misunderstanding. I thought the marker would mark a frame in the clip. This is why I expected to see exactly this one frame, when I doubleclick the marker in the browser.
Is is more, that the marker objects in the browser below the clip are subclips created by the marker and the playhead is just positioned randomly somewhere in the subclip?

  • Problem with Markers

I've seen this before on some projects in the past.
When I have a clip with more than 20 something markers, they'll truncate folders and clips from my browser window. It'll get to a point where any new markers I add will not show up in the browser, but they definitely show up in the viewer window.
Here's what my project looks like.
Then I have a look at the markers on the first clip.

    interesting.
i started a new project and filled the browser with new bins.
it exceeded the browser window. (adding new bins to my current project behaves the same way the markers do - seems there's a limited amount of space in the browser for this project)
then i copied and pasted the problem project files and bins to the new project,
    and the problem went away.
Since I've been freelancing every new project I begin,
i start with a saved project file template i made ages ago
(that was converted to fcp 6 compatibility, when I made that switch)
and then just saved it with the new project name.
    that's looking like the problem.
I'll test it out a bit further just to make sure,
but I'll be starting from scratch on new projects from now on.
    thanks

  • IMovie crashes opening the clip trimmer of a background song with markers

After upgrading to 8.0.3, whenever I open a background song with beat markers in the clip trimmer, iMovie crashes on me. No problem with songs without markers. However, if I try to add beat markers to them, iMovie crashes when adding the second marker. This is happening also in a new project with no clips in it but the background song.
Is anybody else experiencing the same problem? Any ideas on how to track down the problem?

    Hi!
Got the same problem. iMovie '09 crashes when I try to add beat marks. Tried to delete the plist file. Did not work. Would try to switch to a different language, but I don't realize how...

  • Compressor crashes only with markers...

I've already found a workaround for this issue but I would love to figure out why compressor crashes whenever I try to compress a file with chapter markers. Here's what's happening: I export my DV sequence as a self-contained .mov w/o markers and then use compressor to compress to mpeg-2 to be sent to DVD SP. Everything is fine EXCEPT I have no markers when I go into DVD SP...ok. If I export the same sequence w/markers, when I submit to compressor, the compression process fails every time. So now I have to bring the self-contained .mov w markers into DVD SP, drop it into the timeline, so the markers are set on the timeline, then delete the audio and video from the timeline, so that I can drop the properly compressed mpeg-2 files on the timeline. It works, it's a few more steps, but it's a "workaround" and they sit like a thorn in my side. Any thoughts?

No, you must move your ~/.mozilla file. Your ~/.mozilla file is hidden, but that won't stop you. From a terminal, do what Shining recommended:
    mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.bak
This is renaming (with the mv or move command) /home/yourusername/.mozilla to /home/yourusername/.mozilla.bak
That way, when you start Mozilla Firefox, your configuration files (in ~/.mozilla) will be missing, so Firefox will create new ones.
I think moving profiles.ini is also alright, since that file contains the profile name. So moving it should effectively disable the current profile and start with a fresh one, which is always a good thing to check (not only with mozilla apps btw ).
And restoring it should enable it back.
I think I still prefer working on the ~/.mozilla level as I indeed suggested, but I suppose it's just a matter of preference.
    @AriciU
    Which arch are you using (x86, x86_64, .. ) ?
Did you try googling for that issue ?
You could also check firefox bugzilla.

  • Export EDL with 20 audio tracks

    Hi all!
I´ve a sequence with 20 audio tracks (original files / stereo mixes / 5.1) that i have to export to a audio house via EDL.
The EDL limits my track export (total of four).
Any of you guys exported to PTools using XML?
I know that version HD 7.2 is capable of using this files... any experience?
Do you have other way of doing this, via fcp project (?) any tip?
    Thank you all!
    HBars

    Hi Tallguy!
    Thank you for your msg...
Yes, that´s my "fight" with the guy from audio house... he say AAF, i say OMF...!
I´ve 1hour 40min sequence and with omf i´ll have to separate all tracks (groups of two!), bah!
    And what about XML...?
    Thank you!

  • White bar with markers in sim & computer playback

    Hey there...
I'm getting a white bar (with the name of the marker) at the top of the frame when I use DVDSP-added markers in playback on a computer. The white bar doesn't show up until you have passed the first marker. They also show up in the simulator, but not when viewing the disc on a TV.
How can I turn them off so they don't show in computer playback? I'm using DVDSP 3, by the way.
    Thanks.

They also show up in the simulator, but not when viewing the disc on a TV.
That's only because the white bar is outside of the action-safe TV border. It's there on the TV, it's just in the overscanned section so you can't see it. On a TV that was set to overscan less, you'd see it.
Describe in detail your workflow. What are you editing your clips with (FCP, FCE, iMovie, other)? How are you exporting to DVDSP? Are you encoding to MPEG2 before placing into DVDSP? If so, what are you using to encode (Compressor, QT Export, BitVice, other)? Are you using DVDSP to create your disc?
Usually what you're describing happens when you export markers along with your video from your editing program, but the encoding program doesn't know how to deal with those markers. It sounds like, even though you say you're adding the markers in DVDSP, you've also added some kind of markers in your editing program and chosen the option to export markers when you export your movie.

  • Help with markers

In my Audition session, I put markers in to indicate specific sections of a song.
I often need to edit songs that are before that in my session.  If I insert time into the session, all the songs move, but the markers stay where they were so I lose their relevance to the song they were marked for.
How do you make the markers move with the songs?

By default 'Lock markers and Metadata to the Timeline' is enabled. So try disabling it in Preferences/Markers & Metadata pane by unticking it. I haven't tried this in Multitrack view but it might do what you want.
Otherwise the only way to embed the Markers with the audio is to add them in the Waveform edit view and resave the file.

  • Presenter 7: Can you Import a single WAV with Markers over multiple slides?

    Adobe Presenter 7.0.1.
The import audio allows you to import a WAV format file.  You should be able to use Markers in the WAV file and the Import will split the single WAV file at those markers to fit with the individual slides.
That was certainly the case in earlier versions according to some of the Forum posts, and the dialog box for Audio Import hints that it can be done because it says:
"Select the starting slide for the import..."
    Ignore Markers? (check box)
So the title, select the starting slide suggests that the import can be over more than one slide, and the Ignore Markers check box suggests that markers might be used somehow.
But it doesn't!  This would be great if it did.  Has anyone got this working?
What I have to do now is split the audio file up into individual files, one for each slide, and name them 01, 02, 03 and so on.  Then the import can be pointed to all the files and it puts one file on each slide for you.
Any help getting this working gratefully received.
    Colin Davis

I have upgraded to 7.0.2 but the result is the same, the audio is imported all onto a single slide.
Can I ask what audio application you are using to save the WAV file?  I am using Adobe Soundbooth and in that the markers are called "Flash Cue Points" (the menu is Edit, Marker, Flash Cue Point).  I am wondering if these are traditional WAV markers or something different.
My file definately has 11 of these markers and I have 12 slides in my PowerPoint. Whilst importing the audio I am selecting the first slide and "Ignore Markers" is definately not checked.
    Regards
    Colin Davis
