Education or companies using Apple's mail server

I am thinking of using the mail services in OS X Snow Leopard Server.
I would like to know how many server admins lurking here are using Apple's mail server in a production environment?

if you're already using cyrus and squirrelmail, then you may not see much difference using the mail services built into os x server.
the only thing specifically "apple" about it is the gui for configuring the service (server admin), but if you want to do any serious configuration, you're going to use the command line anyway.
it's all postfix, dovecot, greylisting, spamassassin, clamAV, and squirrelmail under the hood.
you should read the docs here before making any decisions: http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/MailService_Adminv10.6.pdf

Appreciate your support and if possible , how to do this?

If you want to work with Mac OS X, you need one computer per simultaneous user.
What you are describing, " Multiple simultaneous logins to a single computer" is not avialable on a regular Mac of any description, unless you decide to use Unix tools instead of Mac OS X.
Server will happily store files for many, many users and provide them to multiple (up to hundreds) of computers at "near hard Drive" speeds over Gigabit Ethernet. It can make the File Sharing part easy.

  • Services that need mail server - Use an outside mail server

    Hello,
I have a mail server somewhere on the internet, and outside my localnetwork.
Our OSX local server serves few services : DNS (for local dns name) OD, Ical, Ichat, Afp, Mobile access, vpn
Do they services use mail server locally ?
Do I need to setup a mail server localy or can I use my outside mail server ?
    If needed
If I just set on every OD users, a mail as [email protected] and if my internet mail servers has an account for them, how can I define for these users the smtp/pop accounts to allow them to send mail through my net mail server ?
Do I have to setup a local mail server and accept in my internet mmail server this local mail server to relay mail in ?
In fact, what I'd like is to keep this internet mail servers, and set all my OD users using this mail server.
Thanks for your help, and sorry for my poor English. Hope you undurstood

I don't think you need mail services running to use any of those services. I can't speak for mobile access because I don't use that service. I think iCal and iChat need an email address for each user. You can set that in the info tab for each user in workgroup manager.

  • URGENT! PLS HELP... using JAMES as mail server

hi, first of all... happy new year to everyone...
i am currently developing a web based application and one of the component in the system is using JAMES as mail server. I am done some modification in config.xml in JAMES, now the problem is i can only send internal mails instead of external one, such as hotmail and yahoo.
    The error occurs as below:-
RemoteDelivery: Exception delivering message (Mail1041375079561-0-!448616653-to-hotmail.com) - Could not connect to SMTP host: hotmail.com, port: 25
How can i send mails to hotmail and yahoo users or any other external mail?
Can anyone pls help me to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

sounds like a network problem rather than a JAMES problem. Have you confirmed that you can ping the hotmail mail server, and then that you can "telnet" in to it on port 25?
If you have a windows machine handy, you can find out the IP address of hotmail's primary mail server by using nslookup:
    C:\>nslookup
    set type=MX
hotmail.comIf you don't get anything from this, it would indicate a DNS problem. Once you have the IP address, try to telnet to it on port 25:
    C:\>telnet 65.54.254.129 25
    Here's what I got...
    220 mc1-f3.law16.hotmail.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.5600 ready at Wed, 1 Jan 2003 21:19:03 -0800
If you aren't able to connect, it's probably either a firewall at your end blocking outbound TCP traffic on port 25 (or possibly all ports), or a DNS issue, or some sort of routing issue with your ISP

  • When I flag an email with my gmail account using Apple's Mail App how do I flag and set a reminder that at a specific to follow

When I flag an email with my gmail account using Apple's Mail App how do I flag and set a reminder that at a specific to time to follow up with that email ?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact Apple ID Support, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.

  • What is the difference between Outlook features using exchage server and using 3rd party mail server ?

Hi~ I'd like to know what the difference is between Outlook features using exchage server and using 3rd party mail server.
If I use 3rd party mail server with Outlook, Outlook features are the same as Exchange Server ?
I want to use all Outlook features..

The basic features (and many advanced features) are identical in all accounts. With pop3, your mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, notes are stored in a pst and are only on the computer. IMAP accounts only sync email back to the server, not calendar,
contacts, and tasks. Outlook.com EAS accounts (aka Hotmail) syncs calendar and contacts back to the server. Exchange mailboxes stores everything on the server - mail, calendar, contacts, custom views, rules - and if you open the mailbox in outlook on
any other computer, the mailbox is identical. Because everything is on the server, you'll have much better syncing with smartphones and tablets with Exchange mailboxes.
Calendar sharing, open other users folder, and retention policies are Exchange-only. Mail Tips and apps (linked under the reading pane header in Outlook 2013) are Exchange-only.

  • Eliminating Junk Mail on Iphone using an IMAP mail server

    Hello!
Doesn't sound like there is a fix for this, but its always worth asking...,
I currently have my own IMAP email server with my company on an XServe. When I receive mail on my Iphone it bypasses all my post-server junk mail rules on my powerbook Apple Mail app, and loads up my inbox. I don't keep my powerbook on all the time to filter it before I open it on my Iphone, although I do use Apple Mail as my mail client.
Is there any way to echo the junk mail rules from my Laptop to my Iphone. The volume of junk I receive after makes the Iphone's mail app cumbersome. I also need to filter out web order confirmations for my business, which normally go right to a selected folder using a mail rule.
    Thanks!

Is there any way to echo the junk mail rules from my Laptop to my Iphone.
Yes, by leaving the Mail.app on your PowerBook launched and running actively accessing your account for new messages where a junk mail filter and any rules are available. With an IMAP account, all server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account. In order for your account accessed with the iPhone's Mail client to have access to the junk mail filter and the rules with the Mail.app on your PowerBook by proxy, you need to leave the Mail.app on your PowerBook launched and running actively accessing the account for new messages while the Mail client on your iPhone is doing the same.
If you receive that much junk mail with this account, more than likely you have inadvertently added to the problem. Do you have display remote images in HTML messages selected with the Mail.app on your Mac? If so, when a junk message that is not marked as junk when received includes images that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed and any images are rendered, this confirms to the spammer that your email address is "known good" causing even more spam to be received. Selecting any links included with a junk message will do the same. Selecting a "remove me" link to remove your email address from the spammer's circulation list also does the same.
Providing your email address publicly for any reason - when making an online purchase, for website access is required, provided when filling out customer information, etc., etc., can cause more spam to be received.
My primary personal email address is used to exchange email with family and friends only. I never provide this email address publicly for any reason.
I use a free account with webmail access only for an online purchase and/or to be provided publicly.

  • Does apple have mail server solutions?

Does Apple OSX server can be used as mail server for business like http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/exchange/ or http://www.mithi.com?

No.   If you're aimed at anything approaching the features and scale and capabilities of Microsoft Exchange Server, that's likely what you'll want — Microsoft specifically targets businesses with that product, and with the related and associated products such as Windows Server Active Directory and Microsoft Office.
OS X Server does provide Postfix and Dovecot servers, which comprise an excellent mail server and tools such as a contacts server and a calendar server, but the combination and the integration of Exchange, SharePoint, AD, Office and the rest is far beyond that.
The closest package on OS X to what Exchange provides is a third-party package from Kerio known as Connect.  IMO, Connect is a good product and is more capable than what OS X Server provides, but still does not compete (directly) with Exchange Server.
If you're not inclined to provide your own IT support and server and network troubleshooting, then you might want to investigate hosted services, rather than running your own OS X Server or Exchange Server, too — there's usually something going on with a mail server, whether it's communications problems, some sort of spam that's now leaking through the filters, or the ubiquitous attacks and relay attempts on the server, and the more mundane tasks such as backups and possibly maintaining some redundancy, etc.
I'd suggest doing some self-examination and figuring out what features you want and particularly what features you need, how big your user and likely mail load is now and the expected growth rates, what your budget for hardware and software and maintenance is, and then running the investigation from there — from what little is posted here, OS X Server and its capabilities could be a good fit, or could be seriously underpowered for what you're seeking.

  • Want to use Apple TV to serve existing 4 room wired speaker installation

I purchased a home with existing 4 room speaker system.  All wires terminate in basement where previous owner had some type of media control center.  Each speaker zone has control for volume in the various rooms.
My goal is to reconnect the speakers and use my Apple TV (previous generation) as my music source.  I want to keep this as simple and cheap as possible.
I am assuming I will need an Amp/receiver and a multi-speaker splitter to plug all the speaker wires into.  I know I can use the Apple Remote app on my IPhone to control it remotely.
What I would like to hear about from the community is
    1. opinions on this set up.  Is there an easier or simpler way to drive and control the speaker?
    2. if this arrangment makes sense, has anyone done this and what equipment works best?
    Thanks

If you have zoned volume control (ie control for each room) your simplest set up would be to join all four sets of speaker cables into a single output from an amp/receiver, you would need to turn the volume to zero in rooms where you didn't want audio but you will need to judge for yourself whether that is convenient for you or not.
Your other option is to use an amp with at least 4 separately controlled outputs or a multiplexer, this would be controlled from one central point and so would allow you to turn rooms off without actually visiting them.

  • Send mail using Internal Mail server doesn't work

I can't send mail using my companies mail server, which requires authentication and port 587 to send.  We have a valid, non self-signed SSL certificate so that is not the issue.  I can send mail using Bell's mail server but that violates our regulatory compliance obligations.
The server using POP3 and one must login to get mail as well as send.  Unfortunately there is no otehr error message than the: error sending "mail subject".  No further details are provided and when we check the mail servers logs its clear the Pre isn't even attempting to connect to the mail server.  So the request to send mail isn't even being sent out.  That could be an issue with the Pre or with Bell but Bell support will only troubleshoot to the point of fidning out if you can send using their mail server.  We can so their support stops at that point.
I still have v1.3.1 of the WebOS as v1.3.5 doesn't seem to be out for the Bell Pre's yet.  But from what I've read v1.3.5 is even worse at handling mail not better.  However, there may be a solution out there to this beyond sending the Pre's back (I doubt we can) as Balckberry's and iPhone's don't have this issue.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Bell)

Further update on this problem.  It does send if I use TLS instead of SSL so that must mean that the Palm Pre doesn't use SSLv3 or higher.  As TLS is a viable security setting option to maintain compliance I can use that.  But still Plam should seriously consider upgrading tis SSL versioning.
