Effect Screensaver, Sleep and Display off have on Encoding processes?

I'm trying to understand the effect screensaver, sleep and turning display off have on applications such as burning a dvd, ripping a home dvd, encoding processes, etc.
I'm assuming sleep will abort those sorts of processes?
What about screensaver and display options?
Sometimes I have to run certain encoding or converting processes for a while and I'd rather conserve energy, instead of turning the settings to Never for all.

Correct, it seems like ANY attempt to turn the display off is putting the tablet into its low powered conncted standby mode. What is it you are doing that is effected by this?
I havn't tried this, but using the enable hibernation method , that is going to network adapter properties and turning OFF the "wake on" in the advanced tab which seems to disable the connected standby, the tablet may resume working like a regular laptop complete with seperate sleep and screen off modes.
Just keep in mind this disables connected standby for good, you will need to hybernate or shut down to turn the tablet off.

After Sleep, and power off, Lion Crash Totaly!
    I`'ve buy a iMac core i5, July 15 2011, 500gb, 4gb (upgraded to 8gb Ram).
Transf my MBP with Snow at first iMac power on, after tranfer Snow, I buy the Lion, install and use until 2 weeks. After the first Sleep, turn Lion power off to change place. When power on, the Lion was Crashed the computer in some way that was impossible to recover or do anything. even go back the timemachine with Lion or Snow, trey clean PRAM, DVD Boot, nothing works.
So, I put a Ubuntu LiveCD, REMOVE COMPLETE THE GUID of iMac Disk, also clean the PRAM (cmd+opt+ P + R during boot), so, the iMac was Clean and I Install the SNOW (sure).
I just Lost the money and download time that spent to get with Lion?
How can I have a Lion DVD for when Apple fix the LOT OF PROBLEMS?

  • OS9 sleep and display questions

    I'm running Mac OS 9.2.2 on a Beige G3 All-In-One.
I often conduct downloads of large files on the computer (mostly transferring old software from my iDisk), and it seems a waste that there isn't an option to easily turn off the screen.
If I put the system into sleep mode, I assume this will halt the download and break the ethernet connection, right?
And is there a system option, extension, or perhaps a 3rd party app that will allow me to manually sleep the display?

    Hi, mohaas05 -
Check in the Energy Saver control panel.
If you do not see three sliders, click the "Show Details" button at the bottom. Then set the System and Hard Disk sliders to "never", and leave the Monitor slider set to your normal setting, probably 5 or 10 minutes or so.
This will allow the monitor to sleep without sleeping the computer (CPU) or drive - they can still function even when the monitor is sleeping.
If your machine is on a network, you may also need to tweak the settings in the Advanced tab of Energy Saver.
This arrangement also means a much faster wakeup from sleep.
You can still sleep everything, by selecting Sleep from the Special menu.

  • IPad won't charge or turn on still after holding down sleep and on/off button

I was on my iPad a few nights ago and it died so I plugged it in to charge over night however when I woke up in the morning my iPad wouldn't turn on, all that appeared occasionally was the red battery sign. I googled what to do when this happens and it said to hold down the sleep button an the home button for 20 seconds a few times an the apple logo would appear and everything would be sorted however my iPad did nothing. The only thing that happens now is from time to time the apple logo appears and them quickly flashes on to my lock screen them turns back off again. I have not dropped my iPad or damaged it I'm anyway and I am clueless why this is happening, apple need to sort it out... Any suggestions what to do please?

    Hello Helen,
I would be concerned too if my iPad was not powering on.  I found an article with steps you can take when you encounter an issue like this.  I recommend following the steps below (these steps refer to an iPhone, but the steps also are relevant for an iPad):
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Turning off my HDTV puts my mac mini to sleep and turns off Eye TV

I have a mac mini dual core connected to my Panasonic 26" Viera HDTV via a DVI/HDMI cable. I am using it (amongst other things) as a personal video recorder with the Eye TV 410.
However I find when I turn off the TV it also puts the mini to sleep (even though my energy saver settings say it should never go to sleep). The result of this is that when I finally do get the machine to reawaken by pressing the power button at the back (I have bluetooth mouse and keyboard and the computer doesn't respond when I wiggle these) Eye TV has quit and the programs I had set up to record haven't recorded.
I've not been able to find someone with a similar problem and I'm wondering what I can do. I've previously been using my PowerBook with the TV and the Eye TV and this problem did not occur. I am using Eye TV 2 software.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,
I had exactly the same problem as you, so you are not alone. I wrote an email to elgato and they were rather unhelpful! "Quit elgato before turning your tv off or just don't turn off your tv"! Thanks for those gems of advice!
I wish I could help you with what I did to get it working as it is now. The only thing I can think it is is that I changed my connection from DVI-HDMI to DVI-VGA. This means that elgato is no longer crashing when I turn my tv off.
Sorry, I know that is not very helpful but that is how it worked for me. Hope you manage to sort it out.

  • Betreff: Helix, windows 8.1. Sleep and power off not working correctly.

I'm still havin issues booting my computer when docked or using standby when docked. I've set my computer to allways hibernate to disk as this lessens the problems for me when the computer hangs during bootup. The information is still there on the disk when you try to bootup several times.
The backdraw is that boot is really slow and it I can tell you that it's really not making a good impression when you bring the computer to a presentation and people ask about it.

    Hi WooHooMe
i tried fixing it but had no luck, although it was fixed for a brief time. I think the problem is with the wireless driver. I think if you uninstall the intel pro set wireless software and then disable the network adapter(from device manager) reboot and re-enable the issue should be fixed. My problem was that afterwards i tried sharing media from my desktop and the problem resurfaced.. So it was a short win.
other things i tried is disabling the homegroup services(from control panel-->administrative tools-->services), opening cmd with administrator rights and typing "powercfg -requests" to see if there was anything blocking sleeping.
Anyway if you want to fix the shutdown issue, just disable fast startup from power options! It will shut down correctly but sleep will still have a problem.
The other problem i have is i can't refresh windows. My usb recovery drive won't be recognised, and a win8 cd i had wouldn't help also(something about the windows drive being locked).
If you have virtual box installed you could also check this http://gurustop.net/blog/2013/09/11/windows-8-1-sleep-stand-by-hang-freeze-unable-to-wake-up-virtual...
That's what i got so far, hope it helps, till someone who knows a bit more solves the issue.

  • Firefox Stops loading and than i have to END PROCESS and sometimes crashes. help?

idk why or when this started happening but it sure is annoying. mozilla will do fine on one page. be running for hours at sometimes. than the second you go and look for another page. bam right in the middle of loading it will basically freeze. get a thinking curser and try and click on something. the not responding message comes up on the top. i then have to go so far as to open task manager and end it all together and start it back it. i wanna say it has something to do with adobe or maybe something else but i cant seem to find or fix it. (have gotten rid of adobe at one time and didnt fix my prob) have deleted mozilla and reinstalled. did not work. clear my cache. i have scanned my computer for virus's and malware, bots that sort of thing. im really about to try and find another browser if i cant figure this out soon. most of my crash reports have the letter bp at the beginning if that means anything. on average i have to do this 5 times a day. sometimes more depending on usage. id say 3-4 months have been doing this and finally fed up probably sent over a few hundred crash reports and i check my email and have never gotten an answer.

    1. I suggest that you update to the latest 3.5.12 version (or 3.6.9) both of which were released this past week. A lot of stability fixes have been made to Firefox since the 3.5.5 version was new.

  • Captivate 8 wants to use Media Encoder CC as a default and I only have Media Encoder CS6

    Hi!
Yesterday I switched from Captivate 7 to 8.
Usually I'm using FLV's which get converted to MP4 on HTML5 Export.
Captivate 8 tries to start Media Encoder CC, which I don't have and then crashes. Except for Captivate I've got the CS6 Master Collection installed.
There don't seem to be an option in the preferences to change which program should be used to convert.
    Any tips?

I just tried this and updates for CS6 and CC were downloaded and installed.
Captivate still tries to start CC and failes, but now I can lock into the error report:
    Dyld Error Message:
      Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libcurl.4.dylib
Referenced from: /Applications/Adobe Media Encoder CC/Adobe Media Encoder CC.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/dvacaptioning.framework/Versions/A/dvacaptioning
Reason: Incompatible library version: dvacaptioning requires version 7.0.0 or later, but libcurl.4.dylib provides version 6.0.0
So if I get this right, my MacPro is finally too old, as I can't install a newer OS on this

  • 990FXA-GD80 sleep and post-sleep issues

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded to an MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard paired with an AMD 8320 Black Edition CPU. My previous set-up was with an MSI 790FX-GD70 and AMD Phenom II X4 955 BlackEdition. I also put in a new PSU (see below).
    Full spec
    Board: MSI 990FXA-GD80
    Bios: Version 13.1
VGA: Asus DirectCU II TOP Radeon HD 7970
    PSU: Seasonic X-Series 650W (54A 12V rail)
CPU: AMD FX 8320 Black Edition 8 Core Processor Socket AM3+
    MEM: 8GB Mushkin DDR3 PC3-12800 Redline Ridgeback (7-9-8-24) Dual Channel kit (2x4GB)
    Boot HDD: Corsair P128 128GB 2.5" SATA-II SSD
    Storage HDD: 1TB Samsung HD103UJ Spinpoint F1
    COOLER: Noctua NH-C12P
    OC: None
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Home
Rather than do a complete reinstall, I simply removed all of the old drivers that I could, replaced the hardware, and let windows do its thing with the updates. Then ran LiveUpdate and cleaned up any further remnant drivers I could find. Everything seemed to work fine.
The RAM is running at auto frequency, timings and voltage - I know this is under its rated values, but I wanted to make sure everything was in good shape before mucking about with OC settings.
I'm having a few minor issues though.
When the board goes in to sleep mode after being left alone for a while, it can only be woken by hitting the power switch. After a search of these forums, I see that can be altered in the BIOS - no problem.
Once the board wakes from sleep, however, performance is extemely sluggish. Load times for games more than double, and frame rates drop to about 30-40% of where they were before.
Rebooting fixes this, but I really shouldn't have to be doing that every time the board goes to sleep.
Would updating the BIOS help with these issues (I've read a few negative comments about v 13.1)? If so, which version?
Are there some power management, or other settings, in the BIOS that are causing the RAM or CPU to only partially wake up?
How can I stop the motherboard going in to sleep mode at all? I'm pretty sure I found a BIOS setting to do this on my last board, but am missing it on this one.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks (in advance).

Yea..I've seen a lot of odd stuff. I don't blame MSI, I think it's a combination of the newer UEFI BIOS, all the green power stuff, and BIOS changes to make Windows 8 compatible.  Every motherboard seems to have it's quirks these days.
You are basically doing what I do now. My computer is set to never sleep, and monitors off in 15. I normally turn my computer off manually when I'm done with it, unless I'm downloading from Steam or something...then I want it to keep running. So this "work around" has me happy.
I hear you on the clean install. It's such a pain in the butt getting all my software back in order. I literally spend a week just getting all my games downloaded from Steam, lol. I'm riding the AM3 platform until I absolutely no longer can.
The good news, our CPUs, while never being as fast as their Intel counterparts clock for clock will get faster over time as the software industry get's more and more in line with multi-core programs.  Just keep feeding them new vidoe cards.

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provocing it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    176x144
    480x360
    640x480
    720x540    960x540
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Display off on sleep and I cannot wake it up

    Good day,
    Here is an issue:
When my mac is going to sleep mode after 5-15 minutes when it is working with battery and in the middle of this process I swipe touchpad dispay turning off.
Macbook works but display does not, because I can still talk via skype.
Only one solution is hard reset.
The same issue when mac going to sleep mode and connected to AC.
I noticed that this is very exact time when you can do this, because one second before or later and this is not happening.

Hi, I turned my MacBook Pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to turn up or down my volume. It comes up with all the volume bars and a little circle sign with a diagonal line in the middle, like a stop sign. I have gone to system preferences > Volume > Output BUT all my volume preferences have gone all light grey and wont let me access them.
    Anyone help?
