Effects for real instruments

Is there any way to get more effects to add to real instruments? I know you can add more software instruments to the library with jam packs and what not but do they add more effets that you can use on real instruments?

  • Define & describe "Noise Gate" Effect for Real Instrument

Newbie question: Can someone do this, or point me to a good discussion of the use of the Noise Gate effect? I searched for this term throughout the GB forum and found very little. I see that it dampens sounds at specific decibel levels, but how might it be used for, say, spoken word audio with unwanted back ground noise? I know the Graphic Equalizer is good for that purpose, but is the use of the Noise Gate related to that?

The way the noise gate works is pretty straightforward: It cuts the audio off as soon as it is below a certain level, the slider determines that level. It's a good weapon of choice for electric guitar if your amp (or amp sim) creates a little hum or buzz that you hear when you're not playing. On spoken word recordings, it won't help you a lot - the quiet parts will be dead quiet, but the speaking passages will remain unaltered and the noise will still be there. And you'll probably notice each time the gate kicks in, which makes the whole recording sound weird. Careful EQing is probably the better choice.

  • Iphone real instruments internal mic

I still use GB in my powerbook. I have not uses the sampled instruments yet. But in iphone am enjoying the ability to quickly use the internal mic for real instrument ideas. saves time the way cassette players used to for easy access when inspiration hits...and the abi;lity to add tracks to the idea is great. are there tips to maximize this feature?

Thanks.  I am not sure if I want to pay that much for a 4s.  I was scouring through this forum last night trying to see if there is quick remedy since its waste to see a perfectly good phone go away.  I hear feedback of my voice and the other caller hears static noise, as soon as I change to speaker phone or use the headset everything is fine.

  • Setting Real Instruments Problem

I have a problem setting the task info dialog box for real instruments. Although I select Real Instruments on the setup, the task info box shos only choices for software instruments and , I think, master task. Therefore, the box where the input settings are made, is blank. Nothing I do aleviates this problem. If anyone can help me, you can reach me at [email protected]

I think I know what your going through. I had a similar issue with setting up my guitar. If this info is not related to your particular problem simply disregard it as I am no expert on GarageBand and am learning like you. The problem I came across was that I could not get my Instrument to be recognized as the source of sound for the new track I added. To fix this I simply added a new "basic" track rather then simply a new track. GB then recognized my guitar and allowed me to record my instrument, only I couldnt hear what I was playing until after I had turned "monitoring" on found in the information window on the right hand side of the screen. Then by setting the input to channel 1 I avoided making sound come from only one speaker. Maybe you already know this but I just feel like being helpful in my n00b sorta way. GL

  • Real Instruments - Input Volume

    Hi,
I noticed that many USB capture devices have the input volume slider greyed out in the "new track" window for real instruments, although they have an USB controllable input volume. This you can see in the system preferences for audio. Here you see a working input volume slider, but in GB you don't. What keeps GB from giving me the slider? I guess far more than 50% of all USB input devices have this problem with GB. Any idea? This topic showed up some times in this forum but with no satisfying answer. We may need a GB developer here....
    Regards
    Dieter
PS: I'm a chip developer, no musician. So I know all about USB descriptors and so on...

    @hang time:
This does NOT answer my question.
    Again:
The devices have input volume, which can be controlled over USB.
You see the input volume slider in system preferences and it works there.
But you don't get the slider in GB for this device. Why?
A good example for this is the iMic, amongst many others.

  • Why can't GB let me use 'electric guitar' option when using Nio 2/4 interface - I have to use real instrument and miss out on all the effects. Is this normal for all interfaces?

Why can't GB let me use 'electric guitar' option when using Nio 2/4 interface - I have to use real instrument and miss out on all the effects. Is this normal for all interfaces? The Nio reads hte guitar but GB doesn't....

Usually effects packages are AU plugins that would have no effect on track selection. Interfaces should have no control over what kind of track you can select. I really think something else is going on her maybe something you overlooked.
Did you choose the input channel in the track info pane. Try both channel 1 mono or channel 2 mono. Make sure the track is record enabled.

  • Real Instruments Not playing - effects are

In one of my songs, the real instruments do not play. However, I can hear the reverb and echo for these tracks. The tracks still respond to editing. The drum loop and Software Piano play just fine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't remember deleting any tracks... however, how would i check for "hidden" tracks?
The funny thing is i can hear the effect returns for the real instrument tracks...tracks that are heavily reverbed i can hear a faint echo of the track. and like i mentioned the drum loop and software piano still play fine.
And, I also see monitor activity in the real instrument tracks when i play the song. Everything looks normal, but of course, the sound isn't there.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Too many real instruments for a new project?

I keep getting the notification which says "Part of the project was not played - This project has too many real instrument tracks to be played in real-time".
BUT the problem is that this occurs even when I open a new garageband file (i.e. no tracks!) and I'm only 3 seconds into recording the first track! So garageband is basically not working for me. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it to no avail. Just a few months back I was still able to use it comfortably to do edit many different tracks together so I really don't know what the problem is. I don't really know if its a problem with the processor as I barely use the memory on my macbook pro and even when recording CPU usage doesn't go above 20% so I'm really at a loss. Please help!

Oh apple support asked me to try that out too but it did not work.. In fact for some of the suggestions they gave (eg using a different user, or even locking the track) it only managed to extend the period of recording to about 10 seconds before the problem resurfaced and after that it was back to the same 3 second problem.
But that is an important clue, Josiah. If you cannot even record properly from a different user account with basic settings, we know that the settings in your user account cannot be causing this - this looks like system wide trouble.
You could run a hardware check over night, to check your hardware:
Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
and if the hardware check does not show any problems, I'd reinstall Mountain Lion.
See Linc Davis's post on how to reinstall: Re: Garageband doesn't open in Mac Mini mid 2011

  • HELP!! Real instruments sound reverby and warped upon playback

Hey , i'm running garage band 08 with all the latest updates 4.1.2 and i am trying to record an acoustic guitar as a real instrument track. After i record however, it sounds almost like there is some kind of subtle reverb or echo and the instrument just doesnt sound right. My audio Midi settings are as follows
    44100.0Hz
    2ch-24bit
    Using internal mic
On a different macbook pro using all the same settings on both machines i recorded the same guitar and it sounds perfect. I am also not using any reverb or echo or any effects and it still sounds wrong. Is there a problem with my internal mic or am i just doing something wrong with GB setting.
Any help or suggestions would be hugely appreciated
    many thanks

Yeah, check the individual track settings for effects. When you record, you want to record an un-effected signal. You can then manipulate that signal with processed effects of your choice. I usually save the original recordings of each song as the "name of the song 0", and when I experiment w/effects i'll save the subsequent ones as 1,2,3,..etc. You can always go back and combine/re-edit to get what you had in mind. Also, make sure you don't have a big empty room you're recording in. Acoustics in a big room give you natural reverb. Play around with the track, and then the master volumes, as well, when in different rooms of the house.

  • No "Real Instruments" Listed

I have had my iBook for about a month and use GarageBand a lot. Then I went on and wanted to record something and there was nothing listed under "Real Instruments." Is this permanent or is there a way to get the recording styles listed. I hope someone knows.
    Thank You,
    Ampaudi

Those are just presets. You should still be able to create a basic track with no effects without them, I'd think. Could you have deleted them somehow?
They reside in (HD/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Real) inside there there should be a list of folder for each type of instrument (Band Instruments, Vocals, Drums, Bass, Basic Track, Guitars, Effects) and inside those folders are the .cst files that are the presets.
Don't move or change anything in these folders! But you can go there to see if they are indeed still there.
If they are still in there, try logging in as another user and see if they show up and/or repair permissions and run disk utilities and see if that clears it up.

  • Real Instruments play beyond end of repeated loop

I've tried every google-fu trick I could think of to see if anyone else has had this problem.
I record a real instrument (say an electric guitar riff). I drag/repeat/loop it 3 or 4 times. It plays properly.
Then at some point I select it, and move it left or right.
The part starts at the right time, but will repeat an extra time beyond the visible onscreen loop. Once this glitch occurs, neither resaving, shrinking/re-repeating, moving it around and then back to where I want it make the track end when it's supposed to.
The only way I've found around it, is to end the repeat early and let the erroneous repeat play out, or just end the repeat entirely, and use cut'n'paste instead.
This happens to me *all the time*... anyone else seen this or have a resolution?

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't remember deleting any tracks... however, how would i check for "hidden" tracks?

  • How Can I Turn A Software Loop Into A Real Instrument Loop?

My primary reason for wondering about this is that one of my songs requires a windchime sound throughout...but not too much of one. Just a touch of windchimes. The Orchestra Kit has a few pretty good windchime sounds BUT the natural sustain is too long for what I want. If figure I can get my wisp of a windchime if I can convert my miniscule software loop into a real instrument loop then whittle it down to the sound I want.
How can I make this conversion?

Well, Hangtime...You were absolutely right (again!) about messing around with the notes preferred over dissecting them.
I got an absolutely gorgeous windchime sound from applying a couple of carefully auditioned filters and then messing around with the volume at the end of each note. It actually turned out better than I had imagined. It turned out so very nice that I gave it a well spaced looping rhythm and now the windchime is throughout the entire song and the song is better for it.
My dissection effort didn't get a natural sounding windchime effect at all. I trashed it almost immediately.

  • Best "workflow" for bouncing instruments to audioclips

What would be the best "workflow" to bounce an audio instrument sequence/region to an audio clip, but retaining the same inserts, sends, automation for the audio as I have on the audio instrument track?
I'm trying to find a good alternative to freeze-function. Freeze is a bit too limiting for me, as you cannot move clips after freezing. I sort of just want to convert the audio instrument midi regions to audio and continue arranging the song, doing automation etc. I mostly work with loop based music.
So.. now when bouncing an audio instrument region, I need to
    - start from arrange
    - turn off all inserts and sends for the instrument
    - do a bounce
    - open audio window
    - drag audio clip to a new track
    - goto environment (or audio config?)
    - copy all inserts to new track
    - build same sends manually
    - goto arrange
    - copy all the automation from other track
Now that's a lot of work. Is there any better way to do this?

bit hard to follow there justin.
i've been wanting a good way to do this as well. because, eg, i was doing a fiolm that used a lot of guitar and a lot effects on the guitar. i had an audio inst for the mockups, and then i wanted to replace the mockup guitar for the audio after it was recorded. there is no really convenient way of doing this i have found. even saving the channel strip setting didn't not work from audio inst to audio track. obviously i got there, but it took a lot of hair-tearing and brain work.
I had a real crack at this rami and couldn't find a nifty way of doing it - which is unusual for logic. maybe someone knows something we don't?

  • Distorted real instrument after exporting to iTunes or CD

Regardless of what settings I've used, the real instrument distorts after exporting to iTunes or CD. Is this a bug with '08? I've used GarageBand from the beginning and never encountered this problem in previous versions. My project is now at a dead stop.

One reason people may suggest exporting to itunes and is that GB is limited in the number of effects you can apply per track (2) and just one on the master track.
So say you want to run an eq, compressor, reverb all on the master. You can do it with the GB presets and a few plugins but it as great a GB is, its just not that flexible in this way. I guess this is where Apple teases you and tries to make you **** after Logic.
If you are doing type of thing often you may want to consider another application for mastering, ie Peak LE ($99) or Peak Pro ($599) , Amadeus Pro ($40) or Logic Express. If not stick with GB and put up with a few rounds of exporting and importing
    Good luck

  • "Too Many Real Instruments"

I am posting this in the '09 topic, but my question really dates back to Garageband '08. I rely on Garageband often, and I'm a big fan of it. However, it contains a serious problem which I need fixed.
I create a new project, drop a single iTunes song into it, and begin to edit. Almost every time, randomly while playing the song the "Part of the project was not played. This project has too many real instrument tracks to be played in real-time" warning message appears. I only have 1 track! Worse still, my audio driver lets out a terrible "HONK" which startles me and blasts through the entire house. After that, My sound output faintly exists until I open up Audio MIDI Setup and change a random setting on my output.
I am quite tired of this predicament. Is there anyway to fix this (without money)?

I was experiencing a similar problem, and I just got off the phone with applecare and went through all their steps.
I'll try my best to recount them here. But before I do, let it be said that the tech fellow, once he heard what I was doing, exclaimed that my core problem was that I needed to be creating new projects, and not re-using the same project (ex. "My Song 2") over and over.
What I've been doing is backing up a pile of mini-discs that have live concerts on them. A couple of hours of audio each one, and I've been recording them into Garageband. After I divide the concert up into songs and export them to itunes, I've been deleting the track in Garageband and then importing the next concert (repeat x 10 concerts).
About 7-8 concerts in I started getting that popping sound when the sound would cut out (made the sound of depressing the safety-seal bubble on the metal lid of a jam jar). At first, quitting Garageband and opening it again would work. On the 10th concert, when the sound cut out the sound for the whole computer would stop working (itunes, volume buttons on my keyboard, everything).
So the tech fellow said the lesson is this: create new projects. Don't be shy about it. No need to re-use and recycle in cyberspace.
    Now - my applecare steps:
    - First we went: Macintosh HD, Library, then dragged "Caches" to the trash
    - then went to Finder, Go, Utilities, Disk Utility, Macintosh HD, Repair Disk Permissions (that took some time)
    - then restarted the computer
All seems to be well now.
    Good luck
