Effects Panel is Blank (CP5)

The properties in my effects panel have all disappeared. I can still click the effects tab under "window" or right-click an object and select "apply effect" but when the panel comes-up it's all blank. How do I restore?

First time I hear this question: try to clear the cache and start a new project. I suppose you already tried changing the workspace?
Second possibility: try to delete the Preferences folder. It is labeled Captivate 5 and in Win7 it is in this path:
\Users\<your id>\Appdata\Local\Adobe
Beware: to be deleted while CP is closed, when reopening you'll have lost all customisation. When restarting CP a fresh folder will be created.
Is your version the latest one: 5.0.2.630 ?

"Effects" panel empty/blank in CS6?

I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 on Mac OS 10.9.3. Every time I open Adobe Premiere Pro, regardless of the project, the Effects Panel (not the control panel) is empty/blank. There is nothing typed in the search field, and if I do type something or click a type filter icon, the side bar for that panel appears and changes sizes. Creating a new Bin does nothing. Importing Preset does nothing.
From another user account, the effects panel appears normal, so the problem is user specific. I've already had to create another user account from scratch last time I had a problem with the program (instant crash while loading in splash screen), and I really would like to avoid doing this again. I've deleted preferences manually and by starting the program holding Shift+Alt. I've emptied the cache. I've repaired permissions. Same problem persists.

Did things one at a time before, but this time I repaired permissions, then Trashed the 2 Premiere .com preference files and the Premiere and the PProHeadless (the one thing I did not delete before) folders in Preferences>Adobe in the User Library. Trashed the User>Documents>Adobe>Premiere Folder. Then I manually deleted all the Cache folders. Doing it all (or some combination) seemed to do the trick. Effects now show in the panel.

Effects panel is blank in PSE9

I had to do a complete restore on my puter. When I reinstalled pse9, the only things I have done before trying to use it is reinstall some basic presets etc. Some specialized brushes, portrait professional, topaz labs. Nothing that should have affected the effects panel. Should I just uninstall and reinstall? I hate to, cause it takes a while to put the add ons back.

Yes, that's it. You need to delete the mediaDatabase.db3 file. . On a Mac, it’s in <your hard drive> ->Library->Application Support->Adobe->Photoshop Elements->9.0->Locale->en_US (or your location). In Windows 7 or Vista, it’s in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\9.0\Locale\en_us (or your location). For XP, it’s C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\9.0\Locale\en_US (or your location).

The effects panel in Elements 9 is now blank since installing a trial of Creative Cloud. Help?!

I have been using Elements 9 for years and decided to install a trial of PS and Bridge via Creative Cloud. Since installing it, the effects panel in Elements is blank. I have tried closing and reopening it and have also tried restarting my computer with no luck. I am running OS 10.8 on a MacBook Pro. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks so much!

The simplest thing is to uninstall PSE via the uninstaller in Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, and then reinstall it.

Effects Window/Panel is blank...

I'm sure this is a bug, but I can't figure out what's going on. The Effects Window (where ALL the effects are listed, not the Effect Panel of effects applied to a specific clip) is blank. I've tried trashing preferences, importing effects, creating new custom bins... nothing works. The window remains blank. Aside from reinstalling... any suggestions?

Captivate 5.5 - Effects window is blank with no functionality, how do I get it back?

Captivate 5.5 project. When I select any image in this project to add an effect, the effect window will display but it is entirely blank. No functionality on the screen at all.
Tried to start a new project, same thing no effects? Existing project, same thing.
I'm new to captivate development. Am I missing something basic?

I suppose you already tried to change workspaces, there is an Effects Workspace but doubt that it will solve your problem?
Since you do not see anything in the panel, you cannot even browse to the Effects folder. First try to clear the cache of Captivate (Preferences, General settings).
Even this will not help I think, but worth trying.
Next step is to close Captivate, and delete the Preferences folder. This folder is in your profile, and that depends on the OS. It is labeled Captivate 5.5. On my Win7 laptop it is in this path:
\Users\<your profile name>\Appdata\Local\Adobe
You can safely delete the whole folder Captivate 5.5 there (beware: it is a system folder so you may have to tweak the Explorer settings because normally it is hidden). You will lose all customisations. When restarting Captivate a fresh folder with default settings will be created and there is a good chance that you get your Effects panel back.

Layer selection not tied to undo history when Effects panel is open.

Has anyone else noticed a strange behaviour with undo history when the Effects Panel is open?
Try this:
1. Have the layers, history and effects panel all visible at the same time.
2. open an image
3. duplicate the layer
4. make a new blank layer
5. grab the brush tool and paint two brush strokes on the new blank layer
6. go back to the duplicated layer below the blank layer and paint two brush strokes
7. in the history panel go back in the history states and watch the layers panel
Now close the effects panel
1. in the history panel select the last history state
2. go back in the history states
Notice a difference?

I see the behavior and I'll log a bug report for it. Very strange, but good catch that it's the Effects panel that is the source!
27Prac, make sure the Effects panel is up, that is key. But I tested on both Windows and Mac and see it on each.

Edit Effect Panel not working after reinstalling PSE 9

How can I get my Edit Effect panel to work again? It stipped functioning after I had to reinstall my PSE 9.

Please provide more information.
In Editor, full Edit, Go to Window>check effects.
Just for drill, do the following:
Open blank file
Access horizontal type tool, type a word, commit
In the Effects palette, from the drop down, select drop shadows, highlight the High one, apply.
What happens?

Effects Panel Empty

Hello. I have downloaded PE9 3 times now on my Mac and am not able to get anything to come up in my effects panel. It's just blank. I have the Content. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to install these?

Mac (two steps):
First – Hard drive / Library / Application Support / Adobe / Photoshop
Elements / 9.0 / Photo Creations / Photo Effects
Second – Hard drive / Library / Application Support / Adobe /
Photoshop Elements / 9.0 / Locale / En_US / and DELETE the
mediatdatabase.db3 file.
Do not rename the .db3 file, just delete. I promise it will be okay.
When you restart your PSE, you will get a box saying “Building Content
and Effects.” It will take a minute or two and then your actions are
there.
The biggest hiccup that Mac users have is that there are two
Libraries. If you cannot find the above path with the Library you
find, go search for the other. I hope to come back and update this
post with screen prints from a Mac user’s screen to help others.

Photoshop launches help file when trying to access effects panel.

I have Photoshop CS6 and sometimes when I double click a layer to bring up the effects panel Photoshop launches the Help library instead with an error message saying I need to re install photoshop to access help???? Yet I was only trying to access the effects panel. The help pages are fine and I can flick through them no problem but when going back into Photoshop I can't click on anything after that and usually have to bring up task manager to end Photoshop. Any suggestions?
Secondly on some occasions when using a tool and it could be a brush or pen etc the section I'm working on completely disappears in a perfect square leaving the rest of my picture intact.
I'm not using large files either when this happens. I noticed the problem occurred after the last CS6 update.
Do I need to increase ram photoshop uses? I haven't changed any settings but photoshop
uses 8835 mb (60%)

Adobe has been looking unsuccessfully for this problem literally for decades.
It appears sometimes to be related to the Layer Styles panel. I've personally seen it happen with every version of Photoshop I can remember using, though VERY infrequently. It's happened to me just twice or three times with Photoshop CS6 13.0.0, and not yet with 13.0.1.
There's no known workaround other than to fool with stuff until it just goes away. It may be that changing some of the configuration options or even returning Photoshop's preferences to out-of-box defaults can help. I've even seen cases where updating one's display driver works around it. Do you have ATI Catalyst 12.8?
If you have a sequence of activities you do in which it is reproducible on demand, then I'm sure Adobe would REALLY like to talk to you and get that information.

Effects Panel not working correctly

I have Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium and using PSE9. When I open PSE in Full Edit and go to the Effects Panel, the Filters work just fine, but the Layer Styles will not open (or show anything) and the Photo Effects will not open ( or show anything). I did rename the MediaDatabase.db3 file as MediaDatabase.old, following instructions given in a PSE9 class I am taking....but have done nothing else with that file, and then is now a new MediaDatabase.db3 file under the "old" listing....so two files there.
I have no idea what to do to correct this....and I did close everything and close PSE and also my PC...let them rest a while, and then restarted the PC and reopened PSE9, and still the Layer Styles and Photo effects did not work. I hope someone can understand my problem and help....in simple "baby steps". Thanks

HELP please, missing the Thumbdatabase.db3 file; actions disappear from Effects Panel

I hope someone can help me, I'm totally frustrated and confused. Whenever I install a new action, previously installed actions disappear from the Effects Panel! Does anyone know what's happening and how to fix it? Also, I have no ThumbDatabase.db3 file in the folder: Photoshop Elements 7.0/Locale/en_US Shouldn't it be there? Can anyone help me with both these issues? Thanks so much.

TexasErin, you have solved the whole problem!!!! You have me jumping for joy! I've been dealing with this for three days and ready to give up entirely, completely discouraged that no one seemed to know the cause or how to fix this "case of the disappearing actions"! (BTW, I found the missing ThumbDatabase.db3 file in the Photshop Elements\ 7.0 folder. But I had to click the 7 and completely open the folder to see it. It was not visible in the "tree" on the left side of the panel where all the drives/folers are displayed.)
Your answer completely nailed the issues and fixed them! Most helpful was your suggestion to paste actions directly into the Photo Effects folder, and NOT put actions into their own folders in Photo Effects. I made that mistake and had about 3 folders containing actions in Photo Effects. I got rid of them, pasted all the ATN, PNG and XMLs directly into Photo Effects. I deleted the MediaDatabase.db3, started PSE, and waited a minimum of 30 minutes for it rebuild.
That was another piece of very helpful advice you gave -- to wait unitl the rebuilding message disappears, cursor returns to normal, etc. Your entire answer was so clear and precise and right on target, I'm going to print it and hang it on my wall. Are you one of the Adobe Experts? You definitely sound like one, or should be considered one if not! I'm SO grateful, thanks a million!!!

I just reinstalled PSE 9 and now my edit effects panel doesn't work when I click on it. Help!

When you are saying that the edit effect panel doesn't work, Do you mean there is nothing in the panel (It is an empty panel) or there are items but when clicked nothing is happening ?
Also, Is it the case with Edit Effect panel only or other panels are also behaving in same way ?

Premiere Elements 12 Effects-Panel not working

I've recently updated to Elements 12 (from 10) and I am more or less happy, but since today, I can't use the effects-panel anymore. When I click any effect, the options won't pop up (see attached screenshot).
Does anyone know what to do?
I'm running the latest version of OS X and Premiere Elements.

It seems that you have made some progress. Please compare the first screenshot, apparently before uninstall/restall. Note that all you get for Color is Hue. Whereas, in the second screenshot, apparently after uninstall/reinstall, you now have Color with Hue, Lightness, Saturation, and Vibrance.
And, your screenshot of fx Effects/Generate/Lens Flare shows just one effect which what is to be expected. There is only one choice there. Are you saying that you cannot apply that effect to your clip?
Baseline questions.
Premiere Elements 12. Have you switched from 12 to the 12.1 Update via the program's Help Menu/Updates? If not, please do so.
Are you working in the Expert workspace or Quick workspace of the program? The answer to that might cut down on the expectations.

It is well known the Premiere Elements Mac does not have all the effects of Premiere Elements Windows, but I do not think this is a Mac Windows matter. But, SG is a Mac user and can confirm that possible aspect of the matter.
This is what I am suggesting
After updating from 12 to 12.1
1. Delete the Premiere Elements 12 Mac Settings File.

2. If that does work, then I would suggest deactivation (Sign Out) of the program, followed by uninstall, ccleaner run through (regular cleaner and registry cleaner), reinstall.

By the way, do you have QuickTime installed on your computer; running program Run As Adminstrator and from User Account with Administrative Privileges? Is your video card/graphics card up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
How long did you work with Premiere Elements 12 before you saw this problem...the very start, never worked or it worked for a while but then did not work?

Program monitor during playback in always in focus; preventing effects panel or mixer to be seen

Dear Premiere CC users:
It must have been some recent update for premiere pro (a "bug fixes" one), which changed how Premiere works now.
I use 2 monitors where one is full screen preview, and another is for whole application. On that second monitor I used to have workspace organized in a way that NO program monitor was shown. I used to have effect panel / audio mixer + project files + effect controls always shown. Source monitor was triggered when I doubleclicked a clip, program monitor I had always hidden behind, because I have another full screen monitor for program.
Now when I playback program monitor is instantly pulled in front and I cant have mixer engaged, or any other windows in same panel. If I close the program monitor I loose picture on fullscreen monitor too. I don't want to see program monitor in my primary display where premiere GUI sits; only on external display, on second display. But from some update on, this is not possible anymoore.
Now if I want to have external full screen preview, a regular program monitor is always visible too. It is not needed, annoying, and it takes space on GUI area for other frequent needed things; like effects, or mixer. Shure it is good option to have it on a small laptop lcd, but annoying on a 2 big LCD setup.
Does anybody know how to change this back?

PS: Right now I'm using a workaround: I pulled program monitor from main panel, and put it in panel with volume meter and reduced it's size to 1 x 1 cm - so It is almost invisible and does not steal too much my GUI real estate. But It seems that I have less smooth playback on external display now when program is played back on 2 screens simultaneously, than before.

I worked with almost all major big NLE products, and once I was hired at local studio with Premiere 6.0/6.5. It was nightmare compared to big ones from that time. But I personaly use and love Premiere PRO from version 1 (e.g. Premiere 7) on. I have tons of stories of broken projects on so many ways. So custom workspaces are jus a drop in to the ocean. As I love it, I cant admire some very old programming solution on what Premiere is based on. But regardles I lasted with Adobe for longer than decade now.
I live with all errors and fight with them by backuping projects in hundred of instances and with splitting project on smaller blocks - e.g. intro, reception, wedding, first dance... I always export finished part of feature in several needed formats and save whole project via "project manager" too. Than I have backup of all that of at least 2 times (3 for projects). I always save original files from camera too.
Regarding updates: We are not used from Adobe to have ANY updates or bug fixes to their products before just new wersion was released. We cursed that hundreds of times. Now they update more than Microsoft. And we are unhappy of that either.
Just today I learned, that some update might change the behaviour of marker placement with "*" on timeline... weird. Sometimes markers are added as clip markers, sometimes as timeline - as I was used to. I must dig into it...
