EFI Firmware update Please Help

I am not sure if this realy belongs to this forum, but I am desperate. Two days ago I did my firmware update EFI 1.2. I did everything according to the manual, followed all the (simple steps) thoroughly. I was told that everything went well.
As it turned out it didn't. EFI 1.2 messed up everything.
1.The startup process takes about five minutes.
2.Dashboard doesn't function at all.
3.I had some kernel panics.
4.iPhoto and iMovie don't function properly.
5.Help viewer doesn't function at all
6.The computer is overall very slow and beachball appears when I want to run any program.
7.I could go on forever.
I did my research and found that it is possible to burn a firmware restoration CD. I tried it, but despite inserting a blank CD or DVD, the choice to burn is still grey.
Please help, because this looks bad and my computer is literally unusable. I backed up most of my data and am thinking of reinstalling my OS. Another question is, if my data stays on the harddrive or whether I should back up everything when reinstaling the OS.
Thank you for any helpfull advice.

Well..
Personally, I would follow those instructions to the tee. If in doubt print a hard copy out.. read it a few times, just to make sure you really know what your doing, before actually performing the tasks yourself.
If that still doesn't work, take the faulty system to a Authorise Apple Repair Centre, the engineers there should have an alternative method to recover the system.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303364
"Important: Do not unplug, shutdown, or restart your computer while the update is taking place. Interrupting a firmware update can render your computer unusable. If this happens, take your machine to an Apple store or authorized service provider or perform the recovery yourself using another Macintosh computer to download the Firmware Restoration CD disk image from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/. This software allows you to create a CD which you can use to restore your machine to working order."

Hi Yann31,
Just a possible solution I'd like to put out there..
Maybe plugging the headset to the other power source for a longer period of time (15-30 min) might get it to work?
Sometimes trying to charge drained headsets and turning it on immediately does not work.
Or if you already did this, do you have another power source you can try troubleshooting with?
Cheers!

• EFI Firmware Update causes RSS? Please help!

Hello,
My macbook has never had RSS (random shutdown syndrome) so installing the SMC update didn't fix anything (there was nothing to fix). A few days later the EFI firmware update came out. I installed that and everything seeemed to work fine until...my macbook shut down intermittenly. When I went to reboot it, it quickly flashed a folder with a question mark in it before starting up just like any other startup with the apple logo and everything. I belive the folder with the question mark means that it can't locate the hard drive...but it does..and works fine. Anyway, my macbook seems to now have RSS and shuts down after a period of about 20 minutes or more (running on battery power with out anything plugged in). I would then boot the computer back up to find the same folder with a question mark flash before booting up normally. I have yet to experience it shutting down with my display/keyboard/mouse/power plugged in. Please help!
Sincerely,
Jason
Macbook 2GHz 2GB Ram 120Gig HD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

For the question mark problem, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and make a selection.
For the shutdown problem, have you calibrated your battery recently?

Just before it shuts down, does it show low or high battery % charged?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.16 Core 2 (MBP22.00A5.B02). Software update prompts me to download and update the Firmware 1.4 udpate. After following the instructuions, shutting down the computer, and restarting holding down the power button, I hear the beeps but nothing comes up but a blank (grey/white) screen. After several minutes (like 10) it restarts and the updater returns and shows not successful.

Hi macinfrance!
I installed the EFI Firmware update successfully on my computer.
It seems to me that your list of nvram is lacking an entry telling your bootloader (boor.efi) exists on your normal harddrive partition.
I suggest the following (i am not quite sure if it will work):
1. Go to the system preferences and select the startdisk fane. Then, be sure to select your system harddrive.
2. Then restart your computer.
3. Make a restore CD in case something goes wrong (instructions at: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestorationcd14.html )
4. Try the firmware update again.
When i type nvram i get the following contents:

• Slow Booting time after installing MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 on 13 Inches Mac 2010 model

I'm experiencing a slow boot time after my computer installed a MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 itself on 13 Inches 2010 model, how to downgrade or fix it?
My computer is starting 2 times slower then it should be, why Apple done this to me?
Please help who really know somthing about Macs.

I have the same problem, especially when I open my laptop from sleep.  It takes at least 2 minutes for the computer Internet connection to work.
Never had that problem prior to the last firmware update 2.7.
Is there a way to revert back to 2.6?

• 24" iMac freezes after failed 1.4 EFI Firmware update

After scouring the internets I'm hoping you guys could help me.
I was having trouble with boot camp waking from sleep which was supposedly cured by installing the 1.4 EFI Firmware update. While I was installing the firmware upgrade the computer crashed... when it rebooted it took (and continues to take) about 10minutes to boot. Aside from random freezing (more frequent under heavy use), my firewire ports are dead.
I've tried re-installing the firmware but the it say this computer does not need this update.
I've also tried everything outlined in the article: Can't install EFI Firmware Update? Check partition scheme; disconnect peripherals
"So the procedure would be: Use Disk Utility to Get Info on your internal drive (the whole thing, not just a partition of it) and thus check the partitioning scheme of your internal drive. If it isn't GUID, then you could clone to an external drive, boot from the external drive or from your installer DVD, repartition the internal drive as GUID, clone back from the external drive to the internal drive, boot up from the internal drive, and perform the firmware update."
I'm at a loss... any ideas has anyone else had this problem?

Please give more information , what version of windows are you try to use via boot camp?.
(in the windows installation process the Mac Os Partition will be there if you put the windows in the wrong partition automatically you are formatting and installing windows on the Mac Os partition.
Hold "Option" for 7 seconds as you hit the power button .
If everything is correct you can choose between Mac or Windows OS for the start up, select the mac OS
If everything is good still you can use your MAC OS normally till you get a fix .
When booting in windows is normally to the mac not recognize the firewire ports, and depending of the version of the windows in your iMac takes about 5 minutes or more for the Boot .
Please note Not all the "intel macs" are compatible with windows 7 ....
Please give more information , but is look like your firmware is OK , (already you try to re-install it)
Take care with disk utility operation, if you can back up your data and reinstall everything again it may help . (a external hard drive and Time machine can help you a lot) .
If you are near by a Apple store , the genius bar guys can give you more details and the proper help ..you can bring the iMac there .

• HT1237 Searching for an EFI Firmware update to enable Lion Internet Recovery on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

Hi All,
My Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch started having random kernel panics lately (more than 1 month of random kernel panics now), usually associated with request such as "open new tab in Safari" etc.
Since I installed 2x4GB RAM modules from Crucial when I bought my MBP (they are +- 2 years old now) and also exchanged my DVD-drive for an extra SSD that now runs the system (fully updated 10.7.4) I have a feeling that those kernel panics might be HW related.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test but found out that it is no longer supported on Lion. Since I don't have any optical drive to install AHT from (also I don't have the CDs with me atm), I found out that I can install an EFI Firmware update that enables internet-based (?) AHT.
At http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904# , the link from MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) links to MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6 which is for Early 2010 models only and doesn't allow me to run the installation process. I'm looking for an EFI update to enable Apple Hardware Test on my Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch.
Is there an update that can do this? Is there a wrong hyperlink on Apple page or am I searching for a wrong update?
Also, even though this should probably be in a separate topic, can anyone please point me to the right direction for a good Apple Kernel Panic how-to-read-those topic?
Thank you very much in advance.

Hey Cris from London,
I would try out the recommended steps in the following link:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
Let us know if any of the steps within resolved the issue.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Take care,

Also, my version of MacBook EFI Firmware Update is at 1.2
I have that same 1.2 update on my new Macbook Pro. It transferred over when I used set up assistant to migrate everything over from my old Macbook Pro. That 1.2 came originally in 2006 I believe. As it stated it will not run on your current machine - I got the same message. According to your specs above which are identical to mine you don't need this current update, you already have a later one on your machine as I do. There's nothing that you need to do.

• Macbook pro efi firmware update application

Hi all,
I was wondering if there, by default, supposed to be a macbook pro efi firmware update app for the macbook pro. Because for me, there is not one present in my utilities folder.
On my other macbook, there is a macbook efi firmware update app.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Ramy

Hi Ramy,
a firmware update always comes with its own installer app when you download the update.
There is no 'default' installer app already on your Mac.
Once the firmware update has been made successfuly you can usually delete the installer from the utilities folder.

• Installing MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.0

Hi everyone, I'm trying to install MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.0 on my macbook so i can use bootcamp, but when I launch the update it says I don't need to update my mac even if my version of boot rom is MB11.0061.B02 and this will install MB11.0061.B03.
Hope someone could help me.

I can't find anything conclusive regarding the problem that you and speddish are having. The only thing that had come to mind was 10.4.10 - and perhaps the update thinking that (as apparently some third party apps have) that the OS was actually 10.4.1. and not 10.4.6 or higher (as required). Logically though, I would assume that, if it were the case, the updater would make mention of it.
The only thing that I can think of (and it's a bit of a pain) is to downgrade to a previous version such as 10.4.9 and try again. I'll keep looking...

When I turn on my computer after restarting from the Firmwire update window, I can see the window with the update status bar, but then it randomly restarts itself again without updating and it turns on to the EFI Firmware Update window again. • Installed iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.1 - now programs keep crashing

Hi,
I installed the firmware update as recommended by apple and now I find that most programs crash on a regular basis. In particular, MS Office (Had this installed before the firmware and it worked perfectly) and iTunes.
Can I back out the firmware update?

1) Quit all applications
2) Click Shut Down in the iMac EFI Firmware update window and wait for your computer to shut down
3)Press and hold the power button until you hear a long tone, then release the power button
A status bar indicates the progress of the update
Important: Do not interrupt the update
Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the iMac EFI Firmware update.
Click OK if the firmware is up to date
If these instructiona appear on your screen again repeat steps 2,3 and 4
Hope this helps - I had the same trouble initially!
