EFI Folder on desktop during TimeMachine backup, backup fails.

Hello,
I am haing a very strange and infuriating problem.  The problem is whenever my Time Machine begins to backup a folder shows up on my desktop labeled "EFI".  The file size says 313.8MB, 312.6MB free.  Then my Time Machine backup fails time and time again (pun intended).
The Time Machine is located on a MacMini Server, but even when I plug a TM drive directly into the USB it says the same thing and fails to backup.  I've tired different brand drives but still the same outcome.
I then tired to clone the drive using SuperDuper but it can't even find the Macintosh HD.  So I did a PRAM reset, repaired permissions, wiped and partitioned the drive and did a clean install of the current OS.  I then used Migration Assistant to restore my data.
It ran fine for a day and now the same thing is happening all over again, but now it shows the EFI folder anytime I connect a USB or network drive onto it, plus it now takes a good 5 minutes to even boot.
I'ts absolutely maddening!  Since I owned this laptop it's had the screen replaced twice as well as the logic board for random shutdown issues.  I've begged and demanded for Apple to please replace this laptop since it was a month old.  Sadly, Apple has refused any resolution other than to keep replacing parts and adding scratches.  I purchased two twin units and the other unit has been whistling Dixie since day one.  My son got one and I got stuck with the evil twin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, but my guess is it is going to be shipped back to Apple for the 5th time.
Thanks for reading!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressingcommand-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • OS X Lion 10.7.1 unresponsive/freezing during TimeMachine backup

    Hi together,
first I must say: From the features point of view I like Lion very much!
But: Since I have installed it, the system periodically freezes! It took me quite a while to figure out the cause... It seems that the TimeMachine backup is the problem. Since I manually disabled it, the system is definitely more stable. Now I rarely see the "Colored rotating disc"....
Maybe this will help you as well to put you Mac back into a state where you acutally are able to work with (UNTIL HOPEFULLY APPLE FIXES THOSE BUGS SOON!)

  • No permission to access the server app and Timemachine Backup failed

    Problem:
Mac Mini Server late 2009 running OSX Server 10.6xx for years without any problem,
upgrading to Mavericks Server in Dec. 2013, running perfectly for 6 month.
    No Hardware issues.
Last week i inadvertently deleted some (or most?) accounts (user and others), using the gui of the server app (and too much wine for myself).
After that i couldn’t login the app anymore, because it needs administrator rights (which were deleted).
This all caused problems by accessing some of the running services (e.g. Calendar, Adressbook, Wiki, Mail)
No matter - TimeMachine always did a fine backup job, i thought.
I restarted the machine using „command - r“, selected Recovery from TM-Backup and so on.
But after recovering and restarting the OS always hangs on reboot.
Ok - now i can do a clean install etc.
But has anyone any idea how to get back all the data of the services and the user accounts etc., using the corresponding parts of the Time Machine backup only? (Only local accounts, no network accounts/no open directory)

After reading one similar post, I've solve the problem.
It seems that I have to enable 'read and write' permission on
    my site root folder.

  • Time Machine. Backup failed with error code: 21

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.4 mainly for the time machine backup. I'm using a DNS-323 in a RAID1 configuration as the TM backup drive. Also I have the DNS-323 connected to my Airport Extreme through the ethernet to give NAS ability to my home network.
After much hunting around the forums I got the sparsebundle created and copied to the DNS-323 share volume. See http://www.flokru.org/2008/02/29/time-machine-backups-on-network-shares-in-leopa rd/ My thanks to flokru.
However, TM is still not working. The console messages have the following:
Network mountpoint /Volume/Volume_1 not owned by backupd... remounting
    Network volume mounted at /Volume/Volume11
Failed to mount disk image /Volume/Volume1_1/MacBook001b6334c307.sparebundle
    Backup failed with error: 21
It would appear this error lies in the way TM is trying to mount the volume, specifically that Volume_1, the DNS-323 volume name, is not owned by TM. TM then tries to create a new volume, Volume11 and stick the sparebundle on it.
Is there a way of making TM "own" the volume, Volume_1?
Has anybody else seen this error or better yet, got a fix for it?

    James,
It would appear this error lies in the way TM is trying to mount the volume, specifically that Volume_1, the DNS-323 volume name, is not owned by TM. TM then tries to create a new volume, Volume11 and stick the sparebundle on it.
Is there a way of making TM "own" the volume, Volume_1?
Actually, it is not TMs failure to mount the volume that is causing your failure to backup. I have received the same Console message using a Time Capsule. However, Time Machines' attempt to 'remount' the volume always succeeds and the backup goes through. That appears not to be your experience, but it is NOT because the volume is not being mounted. It is.
    *Mount Point Conflict (TMDisk-1)*
NOTE: the following distinguishes “network drive” (the physical hard disk) from “disk image” (the sparsebundle file TM uses to backup to).
First of all, I am convinced that the second mount point that is created (in your case Volume11) is due to the fact that you already had the network drive mounted on your desktop at the time of the attempted backup. Was that the case?
When you manually mount a network drive the system creates a mount point in the /Volumes folder (Let’s call it TMDisk ). While that exists any attempt by Time Machine to mount the same disk will created a second mount point ( TMDisk-1 )
Nevertheless, as I have observed, this doesn't seem to prevent backups from taking place successfully, at least on the Time Capsule. And according to your Console logs it appears that your volume is being ‘remounted’ successfully.
*”The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted”*
The real issue is Time Machines' failure to mount the disk image (sparsebundle) contained on your network drive.
+Failed to mount disk image /Volume/Volume1_1/MacBook001b6334c307.sparebundle+
    +Backup failed with error: 21+
More often than not this is due to having the Time Machine backup disk image (sparsebundle) mounted on your desktop during a backup attempt.
Eject the backup disk image (sparsebundle) by either clicking the little Eject icon to the right of the disk image in the Finders’ Sidebar, or Ctrl-Click the drive icon on the desktop and select “Eject” from the contextual menu. Now try backing up again or launching Time Machine to view previous backups.
For more information, see an article on this here:
Alternatively, a backup disk image can fail to mount if there is a problem with your computer name.
    *Proper Computer Name* #
Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
According to THIS article [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
Let me know if any of this helps.
    Cheers!

  • Can I use the timemachine backup from my desktop on my laptop

ok - I have installed Maverick on my laptop and am not happy with it
I  transfer files to my laptop from my desktop when I travel - (including email - by copying the Mail folder from desktop to laptop)
Given that Mavericks has deleted all the emails from my laptop (including important ones I didn't have a copy of grrrr) I don't think thsi simple way of copying will work anymore
I now just want my Latop to be a mirror of my desktop (with less files as the hard drive on the laptop is smaller)
so - can I do a Comand R restart on the laptop and go ahead and back up from the desktops timemachine backup (which is running osx 10.8.5)

Of course. If you have got a Mid 2010 or newer MacBook Pro, I recommend you to start up in Internet Recovery by holding down Command, Option and R keys while your computer is starting. Then, choose the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow its steps.
If you have got an older MacBook, you shouldn't have any problem by starting with Command and R keys. I tell you this because Internet Recovery includes the OS X Lion or Mountain Lion's Recovery image instead of Recovery HD, which includes the OS X Mavericks' Recovery image. In both cases, your hard drive will be formatted automatically before restoring your Time Machine backup

  • Can't restore form old timemachine backup.backupdb folder please help?

    Hi All,
I'm new here hope you all can help me please?
here's my story I used to have an Powerbook G4 -17inch model. I sold it and backed up the data using time machine. however I think I did a terrible mistake coping the PowerBook backup folder to external hard drive (Western Digital)without using superduper or other clone timemachine backup solutions.
I thought everything were smoothly copying the backup file to the external HD. Now after 1 and half bought my second Apple Laptop (Macbook unibody White 13.3) last night was trying to restore my old data (powerbook g4) data using - MAC OS X 10.6 INSTALLER DVD/ restore from time machine/ however the menu box doesn't recognize my external hard drive??? maybe I did something wrong?
I hook up the external hard drive to my macbook and lunch one the partition drive (2 partition on my external HD)and went to the backup folder and my old directory along with the files/ back up dates show up there, but can't view it...please help I'm trying to recover my data.. ...
    Thank you so much!

That's a bit odd -- when you did the backups, where did you have Time Machine put them (before you copied them to the external drive)?
But you're right -- most likely, the backups were not copied properly.
I thought everything were smoothly copying the backup file to the external HD. You can't do a full system restore in this case anyway; that only works on the same or virtually identical Mac.
I hook up the external hard drive to my macbook and lunch one the partition drive (2 partition on my external HD)and went to the backup folder and my old directory along with the files/ back up dates show up there, but can't view it...please help I'm trying to recover my data.. ...
Have you already started using the new Mac? If so, connect the TM drive and right-click the Time Machine icon in the Dock and select the +*Browse Other Time Machine Disks+* option. If that shows the backups in the +Choose Time Machine Disk to Browse+ window, then your backups are recognized. If so, you have a few options, depending on whether you want to transfer all your apps, settings, users and data.
But most likely, they won't be recognized as Time Machine backups. You may be able to recover some things, but it's going to be difficult.
Post back with the results and your desires, and we'll go further.

  • Applescript Help:  Backup iCal and save to New Folder on Desktop

    Hello,
I have a script one third done. I'm a noobe to Applescript and coding. Hopefully, someone here can help me.
I'm wanting to first backup my iCal data and have it saved to a newly created folder named "xxx" to the Desktop.
    1. Create folder on desktop named "xxx"
    2. Open iCal and backup iCal data
    3. iCal saves to the "xxx" folder
    So far I have:
    tell application "iCal" to activate
    delay 2
    tell application "System Events"
tell menu item "Back up iCal…" of menu "File" of menu bar 1 of application process "iCal" to click
    delay 1
    keystroke "iCal Backup"
    keystroke "d" using command down
    delay 1
    keystroke return
    tell application "iCal" to quit
    end tell
The above just opens iCal, saves the file to desktop and quits. I want it to save to a folder then quit. Is this possible? Ultimately, I also want to save a backup file of Firefox bookmarks and have that file save to the same "xxx" folder. Any help will be appreciated.

Instead of using the command-d keystroke, use tabs and arrow keys to navigate the save dialog.

  • Time Machine Backup Fails - backup disk is unmounted during backup

I've been having trouble on and off with Time Mahcine backups.  I have an iMac running Lion, an external USB HD which is my Time Machine disk.  It will run fine for a day or so and then fail with the "Unable to complete backup.  An error occurred while creating the backup folder".  If I run the Time Machine Buddy utility it shows the follwing error log:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Media/Backups.backupdb
    Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/Media/Backups.backupdb/Kitchen size:37
    Backup failed with error: 2
Stopping backup to allow backup destination disk to be unmounted or ejected.
Backup failed because the destination disk was ejected or disconnected unexpectedly!
Any idea why the backup disk would be unmounted during the backup?

I have had a related problem.
Over the last three-four years of using TimeMachine I have had FOUR (4) disk drives fail on me. In the first instance, the power supply failed twice. Switching from connection via Firewire to USB seemed to solve that problem.
Then in May 2011 I bought TWO x Freecom HD 1 TB portable drives, I indicated to the Apple retailer, YooBee, expressly for use as TimeMachine backups.
They have both FAILED for me, as per the description below, which I have filed on the Freecom support site.
So FOUR disk drives failing over 3 to 4 years is beyond bad luck, beyond coincidence, but 'conspiracy' as Churhill might have put it. The common factor is that all four disks failed 'on watch' as being my TimeMachine drives. I am VERY ALARMED at his rate of failure, and wonder if there is a fault with TimeMachine in burning out the disks through some feature of excess use?
I note the detailed advice here is pertinent ... but I've only just found it!

I was absolutely assured by my Apple Mac (YooBee, 123 Broadway, Newmarket) store that these drives would be perfect for TimeMachine backup. But to have TWO fail within 8 months of purchase is very, very, very alarming. One failing is bad luck. Two failing is more than coincidence....
There was an alarming clicking noise from the disks.
    Disks were disconncted from USB.
Message from Mac saying USB drive disconnected incorrctly. I DID NOTHING: Timemachine was just in the middle of doing a backup, perhaps. I was just working away when I noticed the tiny noise, above.
I turned of Timemachine in preferences. Physically powered down and disconnected Freecom drive. Waited. Reconnected. Unable to remount. Used Disk Utility to mount, and initiated Repair.

You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.
Well: the Freecom is not able to be remounted, even after plugging, and replugging the USB.
    This happened with TWO drives.
And despite the suggestion to backup the files NONE are accessible.
This is NOT what I expect to have happen with drives expressly purchased for use as TimeMachine backups.
I managed to reformat the one that first failed, about two months after purchase. I have not attempted to reformat the latest failure-- and loose my complete Timemachine backup. Naturally, I don't use the reformatted disk for Timemachine, but a Vault for Aperture.

  • MIGRATING PREVIOUS TIMEMACHINE BACKUPS TO A NEW TIMECAPSULE

Hi Can anybody help me with this? I am fully aware that anyone can copy a Sparsebundle (all my previous TimeCapsule backups) that is now archived on my USB external hardrive. & migrate it to a new larger capacity TimeCapsule , I have read lots of people have had success using either ( SUPERDUPER OR CARBONCOPYCLONER OR DISK UTILITY ) .
Can someone guide me what the best Application to use as I've successfully copied it using SUPERDUPER but I'm not clear/sure what the next steps are as all I'm trying to achieve is to see all my previous backups on the Timeline on my new 1TB TimeCapsule .
I will be more than grateful for any HELP. THANYOU

I do see the icon that looks like a drive with a wifi tree in blue & I have setup my new TC & named it the same as my previous 500Gb dual one early 2009 version. But I now have the latest new 1Tb model on Apple website.
Sorry when I do open that data folder. With Superduper you have to make sure the data folder is empty then start a backup until it shows a Sparsebundle image then switch it off then do the erase then copy from my EHDrive the old Sparsebundle image. & you have to mount the image you make that you switch TM off as soon as it shows a Sparsebundle then soon as it mounts a icon appears on desktop saying TMachine backups
Then with Superduper you copy your old Sparsebundle file to the TMachine backups destination that appears on desktop then wait hours for it to copy which it does successfully
Then it says once it's copied. You enter TIMEmachine & my old backups should show in the new timeline but it only shows. Today's backup? Then I click on the backups icon that mounted & it then shows 2folders with the same Sparsebundle file in the (my name archive folder with a backups.backupdb with nothing in it then the 2nd folder is called (backups.backupdb & has exactly the same items in it ,it has the my name archive with my previous Sparsebundle file & again the backup.backupsdb with nothing in it?
I'm not sure why everyone leaving comments on that article of how to copy from An EHDrive are getting it right & I can't seem too?
I must be doing something wrong? Somewhere. THANKYOU for helping me. So far .if you know how I can sort this out PLZE let me know. Many thanks. It's driving me crazy !

  • I do not have permission to move TimeMachine backup?

I've been having this issue for some time now. I have several small external storage drives that I would like to re-sort and move some of the backups from TimeMachine onto a new cloud based external drive.
I want to do this for two computers I have regarding the TM backups.
Anyway, my small externals are full and I need to do some resorting and reformatting and putting things in so they actually make sense again. I also need to do this since backups keep failing on this drive I am using and it's been quite a few months now and there is no solution to fix this.
What I want to do is copy the current directory that TimeMachine makes onto the large cloud drive (Backups.backupdb) and keep it there. When I try to move / copy this directory I keep getting an error! How can I have no permissions when it's my computer?  Right now if I try to drag and drop it into the new server I get a pop up saying, "The volume is the wrong format for a backup" - this is a new one.
We have the cloud device split up into two areas, one for me and one for my husband. I'm also hoping I can designate a specific area for each of our backups as well.

    Hi Twitchin Kitten,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you are trying to move a TimeMachine backup to another drive. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup drive to a new backup drive - Apple Support
Check the format of your new backup drive
Connect the new backup drive to your Mac.
Open Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder).
In Disk Utility, select the new drive's icon to make sure it has a GUID partition and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You can check this from the "Format:" line at the bottom of the Disk Utility window. If your new backup drive is not formatted this way, reformat it, selecting the option for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition. Back up any important data from your new drive before you format it.
Set permissions on your new backup drive
    Open a new Finder window.
In the sidebar of the Finder window, click the icon of the new backup drive.
Choose Get Info from the File menu.
Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the "Sharing & Permissions" section of the Get Info window is deselected (unchecked).
    Cheers,
    Mario

  • IWeb data not reinstalled from TimeMachine Backup

I recently upgraded my hardrive and I am not able to locate any web data created on iweb from my last TimeMachine Backup. I assumed. All of my work would migrate automatically with the migration assistant from the Time Machine backup. Since the icloud change I had to switch from me.com to a ftp server and hope that I will not have to rebuild my site from scratch. Can someone help me figure how to either a) find all my data and import it into iweb to be published again or b)import my web content from my ftp server or directly from the web.
    Please Help
    Thank you,
    Ant

You may not be able to view your Home/Library folder in Time Machine unless that folder, which is normally invisible in Lion, had been made visible before the TM backups were made.
There are applications that can be used to make all invisible files visible so you can then enter Time Machine, locate the User/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and restore the iWeb Domain.sites2 file.
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Can't Hide Aperture During Vault Backup

Running the latest Mac OS and Aperture on a Mac Pro with a ton of RAM. Whenever I run Aperture's vault backup (I backup onto another hard drive), Aperture is essentially locked up during the backup. I can't even hide the app in the background as I continue to use my Mac. I can use other apps in front of Aperture, but the desktop is always hidden by the Aperture window, and this makes it a lot more difficult to access apps and windows in the Finder, especially if Aperture is backing up for a long time.
This has been true for all versions of Aperture that I've owned, if I remember, back to 1.0.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there some workaround?

So it's not just me, eh?
I didn't know spaces would help. Thanks, I'll give that a try.

One you start up the new one for the first time, Setup Assistant starts and offers you the option of migrating your old Mac to your new Mac with Time Machine, among other choices, as the source. You can also use Migration Assistant (in the Utilities Folder) to do the same thing.
