EFI Grey Screen
Hi,
I recently restarted my iMac and it no longer boots up. It gets stuck on the grey screen with a black loading bar along the bottom. The loading bar disappears and the spinner keeps turning but nothing happens.
When I hold down the 'option key' at the start-up to use boot camp it gives me the options of 'Windows' - which runs perfectly, or 'EFI' which takes me to the grey screen.
Can any body help??
Rgds,
Sam
That's not good. The EFI partition is normally hidden. EFI partition showing up as a boot option means that you have a hard drive problem. Start up from the install disk that came with your computer (insert disk and restart while holding down the "c" key) Click the forward button in the first window that appears, then click on utilities in the Apple menu. Select Disk Utility from the drop down menu. Your hard drive should appear in the sidebar of the window that comes up. It should show your OSX and your windows partitions. Select the OSX partition, then click "Repair permissions". After that completes click "Repair Disk". Let us know what happens with this process.

I updated Efi firmware, but force quit twitter to install. Now system won't come on, it just shows grey screen with the spinning wheel loading. I am running lion 10.7.3.
Thank youThe following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

Hi,
I had the power supply connected when I attempted it previously but even so my problem occurred. My rom is different and so I still need to update it.
Thanks
I wanted to mark your answer helpful too but I didn't know that I could only put it for 2 answers. Sorry
That was good advice by G-N and s/he is correct about it. Unfortunately, ASC allows only 2 "helpful" and 1 "correct" marks per thread. -
Help !!! I experienced more and more issues since I upgraded to mavericks and i brought my MBP 15" (from 2011, out of warranty) to the Apple genius bar a couple of days after my computer started to freeze and crash on a grey screen with less and less possibility to reboot it (tried all advices i could find on the forums to reboot in other ways, etc. ). The overnight tests at Apple gave nothing, they just decided to reinitiate the software and concluded that the problem was solved.
But the problem happened again: when i reloaded my backup from Time Machine, i could run the whole process till the end then when I was asked to restart, I couldn’t open the finder, my screen was stuck on a light grey.
I could reboot it (always in maintaining the off button to stop the machine or in using the single mode) but it’s non stable, after too many manipulations, the screen freezes or divides in 2 parts with lines, etc. And I have to try again different ways to reboot…
I took a new appointment to the Apple Genius bar, but in the mean time, I tried to repair the authorizations, and I have to say that the list is really long, even if I did the operation more 3 times…
I think there is a software conflict somewhere and find the possibility to check the system with EtreCheck (thanks! I will also bring this paper to the Genius bar technician).
Please, would there be someone who could read this information and gives me some advices and opinion on what could be problematic, what to do etc.
In end, what is very weird to me:
I could read on this forum that “startup items” are no more necessary since OS 10.4. I tried to delete the ones that appear here in library/startupitems, and found another one which is not mentioned in this EtreCheck list : startouc
Also when I tried to delete those items, it was refused by the finder with the message saying that this items are in use…
Another point: I uninstalled the application Chiavetta Internet 42 a week ago when I started to have the problems. I was in Italy and this is a usb key with pin for internet. At the moment thought about a possible conflict with the key and deleted every item concerning this installation. This is because I don’t understand that it appears now in the “User login Items”.
Thank you so much in advance

Boot Camp Installation - Grey screen before installing Windows
So I just got a new iMac and I am trying to install BC. I went through all the steps (making a FAT USB drive, buying a copy of windows, partitioning 150GB for windows). Then I clicked the Start Installation and the computer rebooted.
However, I have been stuck on a grey screen for about 45 minutes. There is no Apple logo (there was one for the first minute of the reboot) and now there is a big no-smoking symbol (without the cigarette of course. you know the symbol that is a circle with a line). Beneath it is the spinning ball thingy saying it is doing something.
Should I just let it run or try a hard restart?I think after weeks of searching I have finally narrowed it down, based on what I have read, to a disk drive problem. It seems to be something wrong with the EFI or the entire disk drive in general. I am taking it to the apple store tomorrow and I highly doubt they will do anything.

Grey Screen restart w/o Lion disk?
I have an iMac which was upgraded to Lion some time ago.
Due to user error, I have the grey screen of death.
Am I able to reboot from my Snow Leopard install disk? Lion install was done from a download, and I don't have a startup disk for it.Which model iMac do you have? If you have one of the latest models, or you have one of the Mid 2010 models and you installed the recent iMac EFI Update 1.8 that enables the Lion Recovery from an internet connection then you just need to hold down the command-r keys when you power up the system. Hi There,
I have a clean Vista install on a late 2008 Macbook aluminum. Some issues but love the combination. However, when booting the computer starts with a grey screen that lasts a long time before booting Vista. Feels like the software is still looking for a OSX partition. Anyone know of a registry entry/ fix for this?
Cheers,
BaliAppleHi.
Bali i'm new to MBP too but as far as i know there isn't any registry entry the registry part belongs to windows it has nothing to do with that grey screen. I think it might be the EFI but i dont't know. I'm still learning . I have the same problem in a way. When i power on the MBP that grey screen apears for more then a minute. After that a black screen with an "_" in the left side of the screen for another ~3m. I have tried PRAM reset and no result. The weird thing is that i haven`t done anything i only reinstalled my OS ( typically windows ). I haven`t touched the EFI partition either. What else can i try. Ow and one more question: If i upgrade the HDD how can this influence the MBP considering that it won't have an EFI partition anymore. Cheers.
by the way here is some info:

My mackbook pro suddenly freezed and when I swiched off and on again, a grey screen appeared with an apple logo then a loading circle underneath, and after a few hours, a blue screen appeared. What shall I do with this?
What operating system version, and do you have any backups of your data off the machine? TimeMachine? Option Key bootable clones? Storage? DVD's?
A reinstall of the operating system may be in order as a last resort, so if any of these steps on these links get you into the machine, make sure to backup your personal data (Music, Pictures, Documents, Movies) off the machine to a non-encrypted powered external drive regular storage drive (not TimeMachine as it might be corrupted too) and disconnect as soon as possible.
Good Luck and report back all what you tried.
Also report what change occured before this tragedy happened, was there a Software Update? A EFI firmware update? Etc.

NetInstall - Grey screen after logging in for user created during install
I am creating a NetInstall of 10.8 for mass deployment in my workplace. I am currently having difficulty with a user account that was created by a script that runs in place of the Setup Assistant.
I am trying to skip the Setup Assistant, and as such, the script touches the /var/db/.AppleSetupDone file (which doesn't exist at this point).
This works, with the installation progressing straight on to the login screen where the user 'administrator' has been created, and is available for login.
However, when the user logs in, they are presented with a grey screen & the mouse cursor. No dock, desktop, no finder menu bar.
I am at a loss as to what is going wrong as this had worked perfectly fine in the developer preview.
The script is as below: (certain sections have been removed for security purposes)
Any pointers would be much appreciated.

(1) You cannot run the installer program while booted into your primary partition; you must boot into the DVD. Restart the computer while holding down the C key until the DVD boots.
This isn't true. The retail Snow Leopard DVD is designed to start the install procedure while started up normally. When you do this, after performing some checks on the target partition it writes some pre-install files to it before restarting automatically from the DVD. This speeds up the install procedure.
(2) You cannot install Snow Leopard on this computer from a DVD that came with another computer; you must use, as it were, a free-standing commercial Snow Leopard installer DVD.
The exception is, as Xian Rinpoche correctly surmised, a Mac model released after the currently available retail Snow Leopard DVD became available. The newest Macs require a later version of the OS than what is included on the retail DVD, which is why it won't work with the new i5 & i7 models. (See Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than that which came with your Mac for more about this.)
As a general rule, use either the installer that came with the Mac on its grey system discs or a retail disc released after that Mac model was released. You can also refer to this handy chart of the OS version that ships with each Mac model. -
TS2570 Grey screen on startup...
I am using 2008 White Macbook with OSX lion running on it. Recently I tried to update the OS and then I started getting a folder with question mark on startup. After that I started getting a continuous grey screen on startup. I tried various options like command + option + P + Q, then Command + R, etc. but did not get any response. After that I pressed option key on startup then there was a response. A lock icon appeared on screen asking for a password. I tried the MacBook password and it is not taking that password as well. I tired all the passwords I remembered but nothing worked. My cd drive is not working and also I do not have original OS disks with me now. The apple service centre told that they can resolbe it as it is a vintage model. I called apple care but they are asking 29 $ for a call Which is ridiculou. Pl. help me
Does the lock screen look like the one on this page…
http://osxdaily.com/2014/01/06/set-firmware-password-mac/
That is an EFI password - it stops the firmware accepting ANY startup commands so you cannot boot from other media or use the startup keys to get into recovery mode, single user mode, target disk mode etc.
If you can't remember the password you will need to remove the battery & leave it unpowered for a few days. If you are lucky it will reset. If it doesn't reset you need to open the case & remove the internal clock battery. Not something anyone should do without the skills to work on electronics - take it to an Apple Store or an Apple approved service centre would be my advice.
It is also possible that you have Filevault password instead of an EFI password - did you need to enter a password after every reboot before the OS failed. This shouldn't be confused with a normal user account password.
If you have Filevault enabled you can still try booting into recovery mode, but you must enter the password to repair the boot disk.
The 'question mark folder' means it cannot find an OS that is bootable - it need to be repaired but you can't get to recovery mode without the EFI password - a catch 22 situation.
Since you have no install disks or other ways to boot it seems you are probably not going to be able to fix this. If you have another Mac you could try to download 10.7 & create a USB install disk & use that to try to repair the Mac, but it seems unlikely since it appears to have a firmware password. -
i just updated efi firmware on my macbook pro (late 2011).. and my mbp always starts with a grey screen (not white screen anymore) and the apple logo with a status wheel evertime i turn it on. i just wondered is it normal?
Gray screen at boot usually means a problematic third party kernel extension file loading at boot time and/or a OS X or drive issue.
My guess is your comptuer is attempting to read from the drive, but it's taking longer than normal due to the failing sector, thus your getting the grey screen for a bit, then it completes and your in, as it takes time for the driver software to determine the sector is bad and map it off.
It might be a bad sector on the drive right where the third party or OS X kerenel extension file is located, so usually uninstalling and reinstalling third party software and reinstalling just OS X which will be written to another space on the drive can assist.
You'll have to do a proces of elimination, run through this Step by Step list,
hold the shift key at boot to get you in, if you don't get Gray screen, that usually means it's a kernel extension that OS X is not loading at boot time, so you eliminate the third party ones, then reboot normally and see if that fixed it, else you try a #18 Reinstall Just OS X.
if you hold shift key at boot and you still get the grey screen, then just skip to #18 right away
The ultimate fix for bad sectors is a #20 Zero Erase and install OS X (but it's a lot of work obviously)

Hello,
I plan to eventually purchase an Intel mac sometime in the Summer, however I have a question with regards to all those youtube movies I see of intel macs booting faster to the grey screen compared to PCs and Powerpc machines. What is it that allows the Intel macs to boot up to the grey screen with the Apple in the middle so quickly? On my machine, a MDD it takes about 10-15 seconds for the video card to sync with the monitor and get to the grey screen. Does it have to do with the EFI BIOS, or is it something to do with SATA hard drive speed?Save your money and buy the least expensive refurbished Mac from Apple or buy a used older computer on eBay. Since a 2006 model would suit your needs, I'm sure you can find a used one pretty cheap. And, yes, I do remember them because I already own two first generation MBPs. I would recommend getting the Core 2 Duo model that came out later in 2006 with a 2.33 GHz processor. It will accommodate up to 3 GBs of RAM and has an improved cooling system that fixed some minor problems with the Feb 2006 model. I have one of each.
As for external monitors the main things to be concerned about with LCDs is the dot pitch resolution and contrast ratio. The higher the contrast ratio and smaller the dot pitch, the sharper the image. Don't skimp on price. Cheap will get you a poor quality monitor. Go to CNET.com and read reviews on monitors before you buy one. It would be preferable that you be able to see the monitors in use before purchasing.
FYI, all of the world is in a recession, and there are people everywhere in worse condition than the unemployed in Maryland. If you think that buying a Mac is too expensive for your "trivial" needs, then consider getting a much less expensive netbook like the MSI Wind, ASUS EeePC, or Acer Aspire. They are all under $500.00 and run Windows XP. The screen is small but they are perfectly suitable for "everyday tasks." -
Help! Stuck on white/grey screen apple logo spinning wheel
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me?
I have a MacBook pro snow leopard 10.6 It won't start up it freezes on the white/grey screen with the apple logo. I have tried it in safe mode it has the bar underneath as it loads up to half way it goes off & the spinning wheel just carries on spinning forever!
I have tried cmd & v typed in a few things that I saw other people do then on the black screen white text the page is full of Disk0s2: I/O Error tried rebooting but same thing happens doesn't start up.
Then I put my mac os x snow leopard 10.6.3 installation, features and refinements disc in but still nothing! I'm stuck anybody know what to do?
Thanks in advance if you can help me.If it won't boot with the just the c key held down off the disk, it could mean there is a firmware password set.
If it won't boot off the disk with just the option/alt key held down, that means firmware has been wiped if all you see is a white screen.
If it has a firmware password, it should have asked you for it with a screen with a lock icon on it.
However it also could mean there is a hardware problem or the 10.6 disk is dirty, scratched, defective or not from Apple (warz).
Or your keyboard is bad or your using a external one and not the built in keyboard.
I think you might have to look into the possibility your EFI firmware has been hosed.

Need machine/operating system identification help?
Find the serial number, thus the model number and thus gives the operating system that originally came with the machine. However gives not what operating system version the boot drive was later upgraded to. Do not use older OS X verisons to repair newer verisons. It is possible to use the original operating system version installed on another boot drive to recover files from a later operating system non-booting drive.

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1559 http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
If the computer just ignores the at boot key commands (without showing the firmware password request) especially if you boot to a white screen (no initial boot screen), it might be your EFI firmware stored in NVRAM memory has been wiped. EFI is like a powerful operating system type firmware that loads before OS X or Windows in Bootcamp loads, programs can be installed in EFI, even malicious ones. (why it's very important to trust the source of your instaled software)
To restore EFI you need to use the identification links above to find the exact model of your machine. Then use another computer to download the correct EFI firmware from this Apple.
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Then follow these instructions to burn it to a cd or USB (untested) and apply it to the non-booting Mac. It likley will take 2 reboots for it to take hold and return the at boot key commands.

OS X Stuck at grey screen, while bootcamp starts up normally
Hello,
When I try to start up on my OS X it doesn't work. The screen is stuck at the grey screen with the spinning wheel. While I try to start up bootcamp (Windows 8) everything works and I can do everything.
I tried everything (Safe boot, reset NVRAM / PRAM), doesn't work.
Does anyone has a suggestion of what I can do?
My conclusion: there can't be any hardware failure because bootcamp is performing normally.
By the way, yesterday I was still able to get into my OS X and work normally. I have no idea what could've happened.Alright, I think I have to replace some files to my external disk. Which isn't a problem.

Windows prompt appeared in kanji/grey screen on restart
Closed windows without saving first. Got expected prompt to save or close without saving, only it was in kanji or maybe chinese. Decided force quitting and restart the best option. restart failed only getting a grey screen. I followed apples suggestion up to reset of NVRAM/PRAM. Any ideas before I try this?
My advice, backup files and command r into Lion Recovery and wipe the whole mess and reinstall Lion.
When that doesn't work, then take it in and make a warranty claim.
This time act stupid and like you don't know nothing, else they think you messed something up.

Cluster packing - memory usage
After reading this article http://www.catb.org/esr/structure-packing/ about packing data elements in C, I began wondering if LabVIEW behaves similarly. In short, the order of elements in a cluster can greatly influence the size of the cluster. For ex
