EFI update went well.  Am I crazy or do things seem snappier

I just updated my iMac with the EFI update. Very smooth. Subjectively, the machie seems much more responsive and quick. Is this just me or have others noticed what appears to be this increase in responsiveness. For example, applications just seem to load much more quickly.
Steve

Hi Steve,
You're not crazy AFAIK . I did the EFI update yesterday and, after a slight glitch which is described in this thread,
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1153464&tstart=15
I was surprized by a 20 second bootup this morning. 20 seconds! It used to take about 25 to 30 seconds prior to the update. Hope this continues. And yes, everything does seem snappier as you report.

  • 10.6.5 update went well except....

now my second monitor is darker? I tried several setting and re calibrated, but it is just darker than it was before and i cannot get it back to what it was??? I think i read the issue from someone else, but that was hours ago and probably 100 clicks trying to determine if i was going to upgrade.
Wierd issue I know, but i guess i'll have to live with it. On a side note my BTT (better touch tool) settings and Hyperdock still work! Yay for that!

this problem is not completely solved - zapping the pram works, but only until the external monitor is unplugged and the laptop falls asleep. as soon as the external monitor is reconnected, i'm right back to the cloudy, somewhat darker grey tone on ext. screen. i have to reset the pram every time i disconnect-and-reconnect my laptop. that isn't right... only happening since installing the 10.6.5 update.

  • Performance reduced under Bootcamp after EFI update on Macbook Pro Retina

after i upgraded EFI on my retina macbook pro the proformence reduced to unusable. under heavy load under bootcamp windows7. the cpu clock drops and as well as cpu clock. this is the screen shot of gpu clock monitoring from windows u can see the gpu clock is running at 270Mhz at most of the time and trying to be back to 725Mhz(yea, not 900Mhz!) when im running a graphic benchmark at same time cpu will run about 1.1Ghz as well. i noticed that it will run 10-20sec normally then CPU and GPU clock will start dropping. It's almost like speedstep is programmed backwards. My CPU is constantly running at 3.1-3.2GHz, and then as soon as a game loads, it drops to 1.2GHz. I've lost track of how many times I reset the SMC  reseting SMC PRAM, reinstalling windows using Bootcamp or even erease the entire drive and start over from network recovery MacOS did not solve this problem. so all the recent games like COD MW3, Starcraft II, BF3,or D3 will only run about about 10 fps as i was playing them with no ploblem before the EFI update.
this is killing me! please help.
im in NY, in this season i dont think is the overheating problem. when i check the temperature, it stays about 80C (fans will run about 4k rpm). but some time heavy loaded Mac OS cpu is about 90 degree but only with 3k rpm fan kicked in.
i did search online, seems that some other people have the same problem with rMBP or MBA 2012.
anyone knows if i take my macbook pro to the store, will those people work at genuines bar help me with this "windows" problem?
    thanks!

Hey Shadowyani, please take a time and fill a bug report at http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/ . The machine is useless for me as it is now because I develop and use very GPU/CPU demanding scientific applications, after the update my realtime applications are completely useless as they drop from something like 25fps to 9 fps even on Mac OS X (no SMC reset fixed the issue). In bootcamp the situation is worse, my software runs at 4 fps and gaming turns to be impossible to play as well.
Please let Apple know about the problem, fill a bug report, even if SMC reset once in a while fixed the issue for you (this is not a common behaviour and must be fixed). We paid the price for cutting edge technology.
Apple shall not do a downgrade of the system after few weeks, remember that most of reviews and benchmarks were done BEFORE the EFI Update, so people are being fooled by Apple in this sense.

  • IMac EFI update problems

My Mid 2011 iMac 27" i7 will no longer start after the latest EFI update.
I decided to perform some system updated on my iMac and after installing 10.7.3, I rechecked and it found the EFI update and one other update. They were both pretty small (the largest was 3.6MB), so I decided to proceed prior to getting back to business with my system.
After downloading the updates (took about 5 seconds), the machine proceeded to restart. There was a loud beep prior to the system restart chime after which it went to the grey-white apple startup screen with the spinning wheel.
    And it stayed there.
After 35 minutes with no discernable progress, I decided something must be wrong. This system normally takes about 30 seconds to boot from a cold state (it's running on an OWC SSD) or maybe a minute after updates. So I held the power button to reboot. But it keeps going to the same state. I tried to reboot to a different internal drive holding the option key, but the same thing happens.
    System Specs:
    iMac 27" i7 3.4 Ghz (mid 2011) 12G Ram
    Internal 1TB Apple HD
Internal OWC SSD 240G (main startup drive)
    Here are my questions:
    1. How do I recover from this?
    2. Is anyone else running into this problem?
    3. How long do the EFI updates normally take?
    4. Shouldn't there be some sort of "progress bar" to indicate something is going on during this process? Or, if not, then perhaps a "WARNING!! This process will take up to two hours, during which you will receive no discernable feedback. Do not interrupt the process until more than 24 hours have passed with the spinning ball."
    Thanks for your help.
    Jason Cox
P.S. I think this is my last iMac EFI update. After my last iMac received an EFI update (2009 model 24" iMac), it became ultra-flakey and started corrupting HD's. It never worked the same after that. This machine was working PERFECTLY before the update.

I don't have the link to that thread, but here is how to do it:
    To reset the SMC:
    Shut down your system.
Unplug all the accessories from the system
Unplug the power cord from the iMac and leave it unplugged for at least 15 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord. Wait another fifteen seconds and restart the computer.
    To Reset the PRAM:
On startup, hold down these keys at the same time (must start before the grey screen comes up): command option  p  r
    Hope that helps.

  • EFI Update Problem

    Need all you help.
Current EFI version is MBP11.0055.B06, however, after running the EFI Firmware 1.2, system notice is "this update is not needed".
Have re-installed the system, but no improvement.
Meanwhile, without EFI1.2, unable to run Boot Camp 1.2 as well.
Do anyone have same problem or experience?

Yes, I'm sure all the program downloaded is right. While runing the EFI update program, system always notify no need to update, however, it do need to update from 0055.B06 to 0055.B08.

  • EFI update 1.8 on iMac 21 mid-2010

I have a problem updating my EFI.
My computer is an iMac model 11,2 which has Boot ROM version IM112.0057.B01 and SMC Version 1.64f5.
I wanted to carry out an internet hardware test as my computer is giving me some trouble however it told me that my computer did not support it.
I read through support groups and I understood that my EFI is outdated so I proceeded to try to upgrade it.
I proceeded to download the EFI Update 1.8 as per website however, when I try to install it, I get this Alert - "This software is not supported on your system.".
What does this mean? Can I update the EFI? Can I do an internet hardware test from my computer?
Thanks for all your help guys!
    Model Name: iMa

    Hey Cesco70,
The test I believe you are thinking of is known as Apple Hardware Text. to implement it, use the steps in this article -

  • EFI-Update MBP Late 2008

    Hi everybody,
I'm experiencing problems with the EFI-Update for MBP, late 2008. It does not work at all, I've retried this several times and my Laptop just gets a grey Background, the bar at the top stays, I can move the mouse and click on the "apple" - but that's it.
To get my Laptop back to life I had to hold the powerbutton and restart. The same happens now when I just want to shutdown my Laptop, grey background etc.
Does anybody else experience the same? How will this be fixed?
    Thanks,
    Wayne

Ok.. I figured it out! Last night I made many discoveries about my MacBook pro 15" late 2008 model. First off I thought the sucker died with the 3 bad tone beeps. However this turned out to be a bad memory dimm (modual) which I learned on another thread. By proccess of elmination I figured out which dim this was. So this more than likley than anything else has to do with my Kernel panics in the past (Not Lion and Not EFI).
Secondly I looked around more threads because I was supiscous the EFi update was failing because I had my setup with a Master Boot Record partitioning scheme. As it turns out the EFI updates can only be applied if you have a GPT partitioning scheme. Therefore I had to erase / format and lose my Windows partition just for an update (This is not ideal at all).
So first I backed up to TimeMachine then I erased and then reloaded LION on the newley formated GPT drive via TimeMachine. Once back up I applied the EFI 2.8 Firmware update and it installed perfectly.
This definatley needs to be documented better than having to search discussions thread. Secondly the only reason I was using MBR in the first place was because it was difficult to setup the Windows 7 install on the GPT partition. One Windows 7 doesnt like and 2 Mac OSX with disk util can easily mess it up. If you make any change renaming drives... anything in Windows 7 on in Computer Management / Disk management you will hose your Windows machine. This is because the pointer to the Windows 7 OS gets lost in the GPT as it gets modified incorrectly.
So in my mind Apple is poorly supporting dual booting (Boot Camp). This is unsat as it was originally heavily advertised with bootcamp.
Oh well I guess I will hit virtual box and get more memory via this new EFI update.

  • IMac EFI Update 1.3 will not install

    Hello,
24'' Intel iMac (about 2 months old) running 10.5.2.
Auto updater tried to apply the iMac EFI Update 1.3, but failed. So I went to apple support site, downloaded a .dmg, ran the installer, but got the same result. in both cases:
get the iMac EFI Update 1.3 window that contains instructions. hit shutdown. hit the hardware start button, get gong, machine starts to boot, something briefly flashes on the screen (probably the updater progress indicator, hard to tell) and then machine reboots itself. after boot completes, the iMac EFI Update 1.3 applications pops up again in the exact same state as before-- there is no indication of success. SystemProfiler shows that boot ROM is still the old version.
Rinse, repeat with no sign of progress.
    Any insights much appreciated.
    thanks,
    Joe

"...hit the hardware start button, get gong, machine starts to boot, something briefly flashes on the screen"
Hi Bob, you have to hold down the start button(5-10secs) until you hear a long tone. Then let go and everything is ok.
You'll also see the progress bar install the update, that is what the brief flash was but because the button wasn't held for a few seconds, it didn't take.

  • Is there a way to "force" an EFI update?

    Hi all
I have the Macbook 5,1 with 4GB of RAM. I read [over at OWC|http://blog.macsales.com/9102-secret-firmware-lets-late-08-macbooks-use-8gb ] that this computer supports 8GB provided it has the "updated" version of the MB51.007D.B03 Boot ROM. I would be interested in installing 8GB to extend the life of the computer. It runs really well and is a gem.
As I understand OWC's text, Apple re-wrote the MB51.007D.B03 to allow addressing memory up to 8GB *but didn't change the version number*. My computer has MB51.007D.B03 but I don't know when this Boot ROM was installed because I bought the computer used in 2010.
When I try to install the EFI update which OWC links to the computer simply says that it is installed and that it cannot be applied.
As I live in Europe, it's a bit of a gamble for me to order the OWC RAM upgrade pack without knowing if it will actually work on my Macbook.
    So here are my questions:
Would the message I get mean that I have the "updated" version of MB51.007D.B03 or would such a message come up also if I have the "old" version of MB51.007D.B03 installed (for instance, would the computer verify some sort of file checksum that differs between the two versions of MB51.007D.B03)?
Is there a way to "force" install of the MB51.007D.B03 which is on Apple's site (which presumably is the latest version) to ensure that I have the latest version installed so that I can safely order the OWC upgrade pack?
    Thanks for any insight,
    /p

Both ports having different IP's on the same network is not a recommended configuration. If you're trying to increase network bandwidth instead of multi-home, then the proper way to do it is to port-channel. Your switch will need to support bonded interfaces too.
If you must do it the way you have it set, then you can insert a static route so certain specific destinations are routed through that card. The correct way to do it is with two route statements. Assuming your IP assignments as above, your destination is 192.168.4.15, and you always want to go through the .10 interface, you would add:
    route add -host 192.168.4.15 10.1.4.10
I haven't tested this so I might have the syntax slightly wrong. The first approach (bonding the two ports) is a much better solution.

I did try to uninstall and reinstall.  It messed up my computer.  I had to "RESTORE" from the prior days backup.  This was not helpful at all.  I'm used to losing all my stuff when I connect to iTunes, that's a whole other issue, but now I'm completely banned from any updates to my phone at all.  Geeze.......

  • IOS7 update went by smoothly, but on PC and on iPhone 4 updating iCloud settings taking 60  minutes?? help??

I started my update around 9:45. I plugged my 8 gb iPhone 4 into my acer aspire V5 computer, and had to download the iCloud control panel and the new version of iTunes before I could download iOS7. did all that, the update went by quickly, I'd say 25-30 minutes tops. I previously deleted all apps from my phone except for Pandora, Skype, and Candy Crush (had to get my fix on the bus this morning) and my photos were all deleted as well. Whatever, I wanted to clean my phone out anyway. Now both my PC and my iPhone are still "updating iCloud settings" and it's going on an hour. Is it supposed to be taking this long? How much longer will I have to wait? I won't have a wifi connection all day and I don't want to do anything to mess up the software on either device. Thanks!

i also have been told to hard-reset my phone, but my lock button is jammed and i can't use it to turn the phone on or off....

  • I give up on the EFI Update

    I have a MPro 2x3GHZ with 2GB ram....
I do NOT use a RAID but have 2 500gb HD's (one for OSX, one "play" for Windowze)
I do NOT have 3rd party ram or peripherals.
I have a Mac wireless keyboard & mouse.
I dnloaded the EFI update via SW Update and tried:
    1. 3 times to run as instructed.
    2. Tried to run it with just the OSX drive inserted.
    3. Tried to run update 3 times as ROOT.
I dnloaded the update directly from the Apple website and tried:
    1. 3 times to run as instructed.
    2. Tried to run it with just the OSX drive inserted.
    3. Tried to run update 3 times as ROOT.
    4. Tried to run it with a USB Apple keyboard and mouse.
ALL attempts result in a "flash" of the update for a quick second and then an immediate re-start. Upon re-start, I am offered the update "Shut-Down" again.
If anyone knows anything else I can try, I'll be happy to give it a whirl.
    Many thanks
    MacPro 3gig   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

My experience has been somewhat in between.
I didn't attempt to install the update from the boot RAID-0, but went straight for the internal backup drive.
The EFI update started, both optical drive trays came out, then with the progress bar at 80% or so the Mac turned itself off. The optical drive trays still sticking out.
I turned it back on, it came up, and the EFI installer proclaimed a successful update to version 1.1.
Later that night, I zapped the PRAM, since I've been having trouble with a USB link to my set-top box for some time.
After restarting, the Mac wouldn't boot, but gave me the "no parking" sign instead. Holding a key (I think "S") while turning it on fixed that.
So far so good, no further issues or problems.
    Cheers
    Steffen.

  • EFI updates how critical

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro 15" 5,5 turning up this week and I will be wiping the drive completly and installing Ubuntu instead.
What are the implications of this with regards to future EFI updates? As I won't be able to boot into Snow Leopard as it won't exist to be able to run future updates.
Would the best course of action be to dual boot the MBP with Snow and Ubuntu?
    Thanks

to be honest I have had enough of Microsoft and their failings
Ah, the reason why many of us use Macs as well. Although, I've never actually owned a PC running Windows. Always been Macs in this household, and would never use Windows if you paid me!
I have just done a quick search on all the apps I currently use on Ubuntu and yes you are correct they are available for OSX!
Most apps on Ubuntu are open source, and since there are many similarities between Linux and OS X apps are very easy to port from Ubuntu to OS X. So most developers will do it. Some don't, but the majority of the well-used Linux apps also run under OS X either natively or under X11.
Whats the situation with most apps for the Mac? Are they free like Linux or do you have to pay?
What I really like about OS X is that there is a very solid foundation of open source or free applications because it is Unix-based. You can often find free apps to do what you need, but sometimes there are commercially-available apps for the same purpose as well. So you often get to choose between the best of both worlds: free (but maybe not as intuitive or compatible) or paid (perhaps of slightly better quality).
For example, you can choose to buy something like iWork from Apple or Office from Microsoft, or you can go free (open source) and use OpenOffice, NeoOffice, StarOffice or any combination of any of them. OS X is often commercially developed for by leading software vendors, but sometimes open source software is available too.
I think just getting the feel of SL is a good idea, especially if you're purchasing a MBP. If you have questions, we'll be here to answer them. And if you really don't like it and want to go to Ubuntu we can help with that too.
