Egads, Backups Have Disappeared.

Egads, I was already dealing with a problem of unexplained massive re-backups. Now several of my backups have disappeared, or at least are unaccessible.
When last I checked yesterday, I had a continuous line of backups going back to November 21st. When I checked this morning, all the backups (hourly, then daily) going back until November 25th are grayed out on the left hand time bar and appear as empty finder windows in the window stream.
I just ran a backup to see what would happen. It backed up about 72K, which was what I would expect as I just saved a Word doc. However, even this latest backup is grayed out and unaccessible. So what gives and what do I need to do?

Okay, and now for a strange twist, all my backups are again visible.
I was having a problem with Leopard's stability. I was getting freezes with the "You need to restart your computer..." message. By the 4th (there were about 6 altogether) freeze, I started to look at the problem log that was being sent to Apple and in that and the following freezes, I found the words Microsoft Mouse reappearing. I went MS site and found that there was an update in the IntelliMouse software to 6.2.2 (I had 6.2 running) that indicated compatibility with OS X 1.5 (although it was done in April, so obviously they fixed compatibility to a pre-release version.
After installing, all my Time Machine backups are now showing. Cool, and I hope this also solves my stability issues.

  • Backup Failed and ALL historical backups have disappeared

Please HELP!!! My Time Machine has stopped backing up (it says Backup Failed). Also, when I enter into time machine, ALL previous backups have disappeared!! However , the drive does appear on my Finder window, and he sparsbundle file still appears.

Having gone into Settings > iCloud it does say that my last iCloud backup was 11:23 which is correct and shows i am using 4.8GB of my total storage.
This means my backup is still there, yet iTunes on my Macbook cant find it?
How would I go about restoring from the backup?
    Thanks in advance

  • My backups have disappeared

I have had a Time Capsule 3Tb for a while. It has worked perfectly. The network it is on is working fine and the Time Capsule is working as a wireless router. New backups are possible.
However, now it is telling me that it has not been backed up since Jan 2012.
When I go into Time Machine and look for backups all I get are blank windows (ie there is no content in the windows at all, they are blacked out).
Where are the backups that have previously been made?
    How can I access them?
    What is going on?

If you upgrade installed Mavericks and then did an update of TM it could have completely overwritten your backups.. Not sure.. something is going wrong.
How much disk space is still in use on the TC.. the airport utility will show you..
And you can mount the sparsebundle and verify it. see A5 here.

  • Timemachine backups have disappeared

    Hi
I have an iMac 27 with an SSD for the operating system and HDD for my data. I have an external drive connected running Timemachine. Recently my Data drive failed and I was forced to replace it. I did so, and subsequently ran a restore of this data from the Timemachine backup to my new HDD. All went well and I have my data back. However, today I have seen that the Timemachine is running a FULL backup, which is fine, but I can not see any of the older backups which I had going back to August 2013?

  • I have a Seagate Freeagent 1TB external drive that ejects it's self in the middle of the time machine backup, then disappears and can't be found unless I turn it off and back on again

I have a Seagate Freeagent 1TB external drive that ejects it's self in the middle of the time machine backup, then disappears and can't be found unless I turn it off and back on again. Any ideas?

Hmmm.. sorry to jump in but...
I Wish I had seen this before I got mine.
Mine has been doing this auto eject stuff too.
I think I just plugged it in and TM let me select it but is it possible
I should have reformatted it with DU first, like with all the WD drive problems ?
Is it too late for that ?
Or just try to return it or get rid of it ?
    TIA

  • My bookmarks have disappeared and the 'restore' process is not working - Firefox is 'unable to load the file' I selected as the backup file.

Yesterday, I was unable to access Firefox at all and had to use another browser. Today, Firefox is back but all my bookmarks seem to have disappeared. I followed the procedure for restoring bookmarks from a backup file. I selected the file to back up from, but I received an error message saying that Firefox could not access that file.

Did you install the Places Maintenance extension and checked the places.sqlite database file?

  • WhenI try to restore bookmarks, which have disappeared, Firefox says that it cannot read any of the ten backup bookmark filess

All the bookmarks on Firefox have disappeared and no new ones can be added. I tried the backup procedure to restore lost bookmarks but I am told that the backup files (all ten of them, by date) cannot be read. History files also are not shown.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder and delete all places.sqlite files.

I have backed up my iPad to iCloud as prompted but all my emails have disappeared from my mailboxes, is this suppose to happen? If so, how can I access my backup to see my emails?

  • Bookmarks have disappeared on two machine unable to restore from backup folder in Firefox. How can I restore my bookmarks?

All my bookmarks have disappeared on two machines. I tried used the restore function it did not work, and I tried to updated my Plugins and for some reason Firefox would not register the updates . How can I restore my bookmarks?

Immediately backup the profiles on both machines. Keep the profile backup files and folders somewhere safe outside the Firefox program and profile paths. The Windows Desktop would be a suitable location.
    * see [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
    * also note the information on bookmarks [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
Do you use Firefox sync ?
*[[Firefox Sync - Take your bookmarks, tabs and personal information with you]]
that is not itself a backup, but you may consider the synced second device to be a backup
Restored bookmarks overwrite the existing bookmarks. You may still have some left, but unfortunately you could have overwritten most or all of them with corrupt copies. If you backup the profile at least you have access to copies of whatever automatic backups were made. Note in future that it is good practice to periodically make backups.
Post back again once you have backed up the profiles, and read the linked articles.

  • My contacts have disappeared of my iPhone 4 after I tried a backup to iCloud. Can I recover these ?

My contacts have disappeared of my iPhone 4 after I tried a backup to iCloud. Can I recover these ?

Backups do not cause contacts to disappear.
Why do you believe this has occurred?
Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service like iCloud/Exchange.

  • I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

OK, I understand.  Try this ... it's much safer.  It will simply restore your backup, but not do anything to your iOS:
While your iPhone is plugged in to iTunes, right click on the iPhone icon on the left side of the iTunes display.
Choose "Restore from backup ..." from the pop-up menu that appears.
Again, what this will do is place that backup back on your iPhone without changing iOS.  So you should be very confident in the backup contents before doing this.

  • All of my instrument loops from Garage band '09 have disappeared. What do I do?

All of the insturment loops I have been using have disappeared. They don't show up in new projects, nor are they accessible in old ones that were created using the loops. I have tried to locate the loops on the HD as others have posted but they are not there. They only loops that exist there are the FX loops which I have access to. Why has this happened and what can I do? Using an iMac if that makes a difference. Also, I suspect that a software update may have been conducted recently, so this might suggest where the problem started. Can I check if one indeed has? (I'm not the only user of the computer).

Well we need a lot more information
like what version of iPhoto and of the OS? What recently changed? do you have a backup?
If you depress and hold the opeion key and launch iPhoto do you see multiple libraries in the select library window that results? If you do check each one

  • ICal event have disappeared after upgrading to Lion. Please help!

After upgrading to Lion, pre-existed calendar events (Newer ones) have disappeared. How can I recover?

    Greetings Alex,
If you have a backup of your computer from before you upgraded then you can restore the data from your backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
--- Let us know if you have a backup and if so, what type it is and we can tell you how to restore your calendars.
--- If you don't have a backup, consider starting one following the article above ASAP.  Anyone with information they care about on their computer should have a backup.  It is a hard lesson that every computer user learns at least once.
If you do not have a backup from before you upgraded:
    1. Make an iCal backup so you don't lose what you have currently:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase)
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove all files and folders that start with this phrase.)
---NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
---NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion:
    4. Open iCal and see if the events you are looking for magically reappear.
If the events don't appear and you don't have a backup or have the events on another device like an iPhone or iPad then your only other option would be to use data recovery software or a data recovery company to try to get the data back (although it might be easier to just re-create the data as best you can).

You can contact a local Apple Authorized Provider to see if they offer data recovery services: http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
There are many nationwide / worldwide data recovery companies out there.  Here are a few examples:

  • HT204406 I did a sync in itunes and now almost all of my songs have disappeared from my itunes library. I'm sure they're in the cloud, but what if I want to play one on my computer? How do I find them?

I did a sync in itunes and now almost all of my songs have disappeared from my itunes library. I'm sure they're in the cloud, but what if I want to play one on my computer? How do I find them?

    - Try resetting the iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next, restore from backup.

  • My iphone 4s is importing contact information from FB and my email account.  When I pull up my contacts it only shows e-mail information and the phone numbers have disappeared.  How do I get my old contact list back with the phone numbers?

My iphone 4s is importing contact information from FB and my e-mail account.  When I try to look at my contact list it is showing everyone I have on those lists and it only shows their email addresses.  The phone numbers for my contacts have disappeared and I don't know how to get them back.

Hi macmac57. I don't memorize my numbers anymore, so I know how important it is to have all your contacts on your phone at all times. Did an update occur or a new application download when your contacts disappeared? Have you been backing up your device with your computer? You can try to restore your contacts from your last backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Are you syncing your iPhone between multiple computers? This can sometimes create issues with your contacts. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1474
If you were already using iCloud to back up your contacts, check out http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3998 for some great tips from Apple.
I do hope this has been helpful for you to restore your contacts.
