EHPI update, reinstall dialog instances

The EHPI installation book as well as the central note 1302772 say that if you are using EHPI and you have dialog instances that you need to De-install and Re-install the dialog instance if you have dual stack or java only stack.
Can anyone explain WHY this has to be done, This seems to be a lot of unneccessary work. In our enviironment the kernel directories are shared per the SAP design. The dialog instances are shutdown during down time.
I just got done doing and update on one of my sandbox systems and afterwards I started up my dialog instance(without reinstalling it) with no problems.
I did searches about tlhis but found no similar question
I am updating from NW 7.0 sp18 to Nw EHP1 sp8.

This forum is highly informative. Did SAP actually update that no re-install is necessary?
We are done upgrading our SAP ERP 6.0 (ABAP only) system to EHP5 from EHP3.
Dont we need to upgrade our instance?
The SAP guide says just re-install with same SID and same instance number.
It seems very surprising that guide is so largely flawed.
Secondly there is a catch that we are on oracle 11.2.0.2
The installation master is asking for 10g Client.
it will be helpful if you can clarify a bit as what SAP replied precisely.

We intend to kick off the EHP4 PRD Downtime phase by Friday 10 PM.
Can you please provide me expert thoughts on the following:
1) When should we backup the PRD Database? (a) Anytime After the end of pre-processing phase when production operations are going on (b) after stopping of Application Servers and immediately before commencing the Downtime Phase
2) Is the online database backup fine or do we need a cold backup?
3) What steps specific to Dialog Instances are necassary like any profile parameter changes, explicit kernel upgrade on Dialog Instances before and after the downtime phase?

Once you will finish Pre-processing phase then it will ask you take backup of database, backup of upgrade directory and stop all productive operation. And then start downtime phase. At that phase you should take the backup. And this backup should be taken after stopping of application servers.

I would suggest you to take offline backup only because if you will take online backup then users will be there in the system which makes the backup inconsistent since productive operations will be on that time. Main idea to take backup is because if something goes wrong in downtime phase then you can restore the system at same stage before starting downtime. And if you will take online backup then users will be working that time so I think it defeats the purpose itself.

For dialog instance, you can check SAP note 1245473 Add. Info. - SAP Enhancement Package Installer 7.00. Extract below from this note:
Updating Dialog Instances
After the enhancement package installation on the central instance, you
need to update the dialog instances accordingly. To do this, you install
the new dialog instances on top of the old dialog instances using the
tool SAPinst.
You can now also install more dialog instances, if necessary.
3. Save your dialog instance profiles, if you want to reuse them.
4. In case of a dual-stack system or a Java system, uninstall the old
dialog instances as described in the installation guide for your
source release.
5. To install a new dialog instance, proceed as described in the
document Installation Guide - <SAP NetWeaver / SAP application>
(<Technology>) on <Operating System>: <Database>.
6. If you use other instance numbers than on the source release and
reuse the old dialog instance profiles, adapt the instance numbers
in the profiles.

Problem in updating Dialog instance kernel

Dear all,
I've a ECC 5 central instance runs on a sparc solaris machine, kernel version 175. The DB is oracle.
I tried to install a dialog instance on a win2k3 machine.
The installation was success, and the Dialog Instance can ran well. The kernel version of the DI is 43, so i want to update the kernel to version 175.
But when i tried to upgrade the kernel of the DI, it cannot start.
The error messsage is:
ERROR => platform patchno is 43 [dpxxdisp.c 14862]
ERROR => but my patchno is 175 [dpxxdisp.c 14863]
DP_FATAL_ERROR => Release inconsistent with running system
DISPATCHER EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN ***
It seem like the system still stuck with the old kernel. Please help me to solve this problem.

There are two reasons that cause this kind of issue:
1. An attempt is made to start two instances with the same operating
 system but a different kernel patch.
2. Kernels are exchanged on one or several instances with an operating
 system that differs from the one of the central instance without
 restarting the central instance.
In your case, it might be the second one. I write down the solutions
for both cases anyway:
for 1. Upgrade the kernel to the same patch level on all R/3 system
 instances with the same operating system.

Updating dialog instance after upgrade to EHP5.

Hi,
We have finished the upgrade of our ERP 6.0 system from EHP3 to EHP5 on the central instance. Our systems are on HP-UX 11.31 / Oracle 11.2.0.2
THe guide mentions that for application servers we need to re-install the dialog instance with same SID and instance number.
This seems highly unnecessary for Unix.
We also referred the forum [http://forums.sdn.sap.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1908515] which seems to be saying we dont need to update or re-install.
Secondly, we had anyways started the updation of dialog install. The new dialog install is stuck since it asks for RDBMS Client DVD.
We have to provide the 11.2 client DVD but the sapinst tool keeps asking for 10G client DVD.
This leads to DB connectivity problem since we alrady tried giving the 10G client DVD for 10.2.0.5 and it fails at the last phase.
Please suggest in case there is any clarity.
THe error regarding DVD is as follows.

Hi,
You are correct. It is asking for a 10G client DVD. TH SAPinst will go ahead too but it fails ahead in the installation. The error is pasted below. Quite clearly the DB doesnt connect due to 11g client requiremnts although the software is taking only 10g client DVD.

Automatic shutdown of SAP Instance after installation of Dialog Instance

Hi all,
We've upgraded our system from SAP4.6C to ECC6.0 running on Win2003 64 bits Oracle 10g.
After upgrade, we installed Dialog instance (this dialog instance is running outside MS cluster) and it is running on Microsoft cluster. When we try to start up SAP dialog instance, the system is started but it automatically shuts down again.

Hi all again,
I had the same problem and found a solution for it.
I made two steps to start the dialog instance successful. First I modified the NLS_LANG setting in the registry and enviroment (only if necessary). Second, I fetched the last Oracle Instant Client OCL10264.sar from SAP Net and extract the file to E:\usr\sap\PDV\SYS\exe\nuc\NTAMD64 (This directory was created through the Installer. The Kernel lies under E:\usr\sap\PDV\D20\exe)
Now I changed the variable DIR_CLIENT_ORAHOME = $(DIR_EXECUTABLE) to
DIR_CLIENT_ORAHOME = E:\usr\sap\PDV\SYS\exe\nuc\NTAMD64 in the Instance Profile of the new Dialog Instance. So the Kernel knows that he has to use the Oracle Instance Client and the profilevariable says where he found it.
After these modifications the Dialog Instance starts with success.

How to Install a Dialog Instance on NT server which CI is running on Unix

Dear expert:
Recently, we wanna add new dialog instance for our production system, but only one NT server can be used. Our SAP version is ECC6.0 SR3 and it's CI is running on HPUX 11.31. steps below:
1. I have configed the SAMBA with shared /sapmnt -> /usr/sap. Also from NT side this directory can be accessed.
2. I have add the <SID>adm and SAPService<SID> into SAMBA for access this directory with read and write rights.
3. I installed the DI on NT server with x86 master.(our NT is windows 2003 x64 SP2)
4. during the installation, the Master needs a directory named 'saploc' ( I think this should be only for NT with CI has this shared directory name, but no idea how to make this also in UX, so i create a new directory in UX named saploc and also share it). Is this normally?
5. At the end, the DI in NT can not be running normally..first is dispwork.exe can not running. After I change the rights for 'saploc' in ux, the dispwork is running but can not connected to message server.
6. I have updated the kernel for DI and make sure both the DI and CI has same version 236.
7. After that , the disp+work.exe can never been running anymore
8. I reboot the NT server try to fix this issue. but too bad! after reboot, I can not even start the DI from SAPMMC! with error 'permission deniedu2018..
My question:
1. do any one of yours has such experiences before? I mean install app server on different OS system.
2. Is that possible for SAP ECC6.0 SR3, since I know that lots of successful storys for 46C or 470
3. If it is possible.. how to ....

Did you check note 680617? Sorry I don't have hands on experience for this matter but I'm quite sure it's doable and fully supported.
Here's the checklist I can imagine:
1. release the /usr/sap directory as SAPMNT -- you already did and made sure it can be accessed from NT server
2. edit DEFAULT.PFL in the profile directory and add the parameter SAPGLOBALHOST to it -- you didn't indicate
3. have your target X86_64 kernel directory ready on CI HPUX host -- you didn't indicate but you did finish the DI install
4. use SAPPAD to edit DI profile
5. optional steps for oracle

New Dialog Instance Installation PXA_NO_SHARED_MEMORY Error

I am running SAP ECC 6.0 on HP_UX 11iv2 and oracle10g. Central instance and database installed on different servers.
I have two other dialog instances running but I have installed another dialog instance as restore from other existing dialoginstance.. I have completed the restore activity and changess in profiles and aal that.
but when I start this dialog instance then it giving large no.of dumps as PXA_NO_SHARED_MEMORY.

Dialog Instance Host Name

Hi,
I am having a problem in SM51 where the dialog instance host name is the same as the central instance host name.

We have a central instance and a dialog instance installed on seperate nodes in a HA cluster. This problem only happens when the message server runs on the primary node. When the message server is failed over to the node where the dialog instance runs the hostname for HHA56_ECP_00 is HHA56 which is correct. This is effecting load balancing and prevents me from signing on through the Portal with the HTML gui.
I have checked the parameters for each of the instance profiles which are correct. The message server points to a virtual host and SAPLOCALHOST and SAPGLOBALHOST are correctly defined for each instance. I have setup each instance to use the logon group PUBLIC in SMLG. The hosts and services files are the same in each node of the cluster. I can successfully resolve the host names using DNS. Also the internal RFC destinations in SM59 are configured with the correct hosts.
Does anyone know where the data for these host names is maintained?

How to Uninstall Dialog Instance in a Cluster Environment

Hello Guys,
I have installed my central server and one dialog instance on a windows cluster. But when i am trying to install a Dialog instance on a server I have given Node A profile directory instead of Global Profile path.
Now I am trying to uninstall my dialog instance on windows server I am not able to now. My installation also stuck and thrown a error in between. I would like to uninstall and reinstall DI instance on my 2003 windows server. Can some one help me how to do that ?

I have already fininshed with installations of ASCS, ERS, DB instance, CI as per the installation doc.

P.S: I have only installed SCM server. LC is yet to be installed. This error is encountered during the client installation phase of dialog instance installation.

Thanks for your time.
Since i am installing app server, the SAP<SID> group will have to be online on this node. There is another group containing shared drives for components for livecache. This is also required to be online on node 2 for app server installation.
The only cluster resource I can move back to node 1 is ORACLE<SID>. Tried doing that, but no luck.
Any one here facing similar issue during SCM dialog instance installation in MSCS environment?

Hi,
Not supported by SAP, not recommended by SAP.
But I did it without problem at home on my test drive
If you have enough experience you can try, if not work you can reinstall it
1. Shut down SAP sytem
2. addapt all profiles start form DEFAULT then START and also instance Profile
3. check /etc/services and add new entries
e.g. sapdp 3200/tcp
new
sapdp 3201/tcp
you can leave the old one , not need to delete them
4. rename all profiles Start and stop
stopsap_<HOST>_00 to stopsap_<HOST>_01
5. adapt enviroment for your user sidadm
corn shell, bourn shell,
6. if you manage to start your system then
RFC - sm59, rz10 - import new profile, SPAD, job managment SM36 and Sm37
Of course I miss something, but it up to you
For you better knowledge you can try it, it will learn you how system works
or simple ask for consulting support from SAP, it will cost just money, nothing else.

JSPM for Dialog instance

Hi,
I could see links for using JSPM for deploying SPS for central java instance hosts. Need to know, how Java dialog instances are updated?( Java+ABAP dialog instances are installed in separate hosts).Should we follow the same process.? It is little new to me.

Hi Raj,
if SPAM could be used for both Hosts
in ABAP it doesn't matter which application server you are loggin into for applying support packs. because, when you're applying support packs, things are getting stored in database. so no matter if you go to CI or app server.
In case of Java all deployment archives is stored in CI. and also you will notice that SDM process (who is responsible for deployment) only present in CI not in dialog instance.
Dialog instance just gives the additional server processes for handing additional loads.

EHP5 - Uninstall all dialog instance before the downtime begins

Dear Friends
I am working on EHP5 Upgrade on PRD Server HA Environment, the Node B is also the Application Server.
What does means that "Before the downtime [page 82] begins, you uninstall all dialog instances, stop SAP Management Console (MMC) and Software Deployment Manager (SDM), stop jcmon and other standalone monitoring tools
Do i need to uninstall application server from the Node B ? or need to update the SAP Kernel and IGS manually ?

You need not to uninstall application server. But if your kernel directory of application server is different then please make sure that you update kernel and IGS as well.

Problems in Dialog instance installation for ECC6.0(ABAP+JAVA)

Does anyone can help me what should be a procedure of installing Dialog instance for ECC 6.0 with both ABAP + Java Stacks.
When installing app server do we also choose ABAP and Java or just ABAP. Installation manual does not cover this and when we run the sapinst we have following problem:
The following are the activities that I have done as pre-reqs on the standby on the server that is to host dialog instance
I have mounted the following file systems on ddrsap02. Created the local filesystem /usr/sap/DSP/D00 and NFS mounted the others

Am I missing some pre-reqs or variable definitions?
I was going through the documentation and it says that /sapmnt/DSP/exe should be a local filesystem for a DI on a separate server. Will this create a problem ?
Also they talk about starting sapinst with the variable SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME set to ddrsap02. I have tried this also
We are also not 100% sure about the settings for parameters:
rdisp/mssserv
rdisp/mssserv_internal
Accorss Devault Instance and Services Instance profile.
When we define it as per installation GUIDE (Abap+Java page 64) we get the popup message in SAPINST:
<html>Profile parameter rdisp/msserv_internal is not set for instance DVEBMGS01/DSP on host dprsap01.You have to set the parameter in the default profile and restart the instance.For further information refer to SAP Note 821875.</html>
Other errors follow shortly.

I am trying to install another application server(Dialog Instance) on
different host. My both System Central(main server) and Dialog system in
same domain. I am installing SAP Server as a Local Installation.
I am able to installed Dialog Instance on same Host of Central System. But
when I was trying to installation it on different Host, I got error on

Hi, I'm Josephine and I almost have the same scenario as this problem reported earlier but it's just that we are using SAP Netweaver 04 SR1.
However, I'm installing additional SAP Application server to our existing one.
Our existing main server is in MS cluster. SAPPRD1 (DB Server in node A) and SAPPRD2 (SAP App Server in node B). System ID is PRD and the CI Instance number is 00. The hostname where the USR folder is SAPPRD (hostname in the cluster environment but this is the SAPPRD2 server in node B).
Now I'm installing additional SAP App server into a new host (SAPPRD3 & SAPPRD4) they are all in the same domain.
But I would like to install the 2nd and 3rd SAP App server in a local host.
While installing there was an error "Output: Service not started" the process "Create or reregister services" during the installation stopped.
I used the installer under the folder InstMaster\IM01_NT_I386\SAPINST\NT\I386\sapinst.exe and run the Dialog Instance under the SAP Netweaver\ABAP System\MS SQL Server\Unicode\.
