EIDE drives

Are EIDE drives somehow different from IDE drives.
What I really need to know is--Can a Western Digital EIDE 13Gb drive be installed in a G3 B&W? Is there some trick to the process? I have tried all of the jumper positions on both drives and I can never get the WD drive to operate. (The other drive in the B&W is an IBM 12 GB.)
Thanks in advance, Jim

If you don't have the problematic Rev 1 B&W, it's possible that the WD & IBM drives don't get along with each other on the same IDE bus. I had problems a while back (on a Beige G3) getting a 40GB Maxtor and an 80GB Samsung drive working together consistently. I ended up getting an 80GB Maxtor drive--going for brand consistency--and relegated the Samsung drive to external use.
Sometimes you may need to switch master/slave designations to get the two drives working together. You can still boot from a partition on the slave drive, as the master/slave setting is really just a 1-bit device address.

  • Problems with old(ish) EIDE drive in new Neo4 system

I've been building my new system today, the only components I have retained are the optical and hard drives and the memory. System is as follows
    K8N Neo4 (non SLI edition)
    Athlon 64 3700+
PC3200 Crucial 1Gb (2x512Mb sticks in dual channel)
    BFG 7800GT OC 256Mb
    Creative X-Fi Fatality FPS
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 120Gb (EIDE) [ST3120026A]
    Seasonic S12 500W PSU
    XP Pro
The problem I'm having is that while my HDD is detected in BIOS, when I boot from the XP CD, the setup runs it's 'checking hardware configuration' and then dumps me at a black screen. Disconnecting the drive allows me to continue. Here's what I've tried:
    a) Initially I thought I'd [burger] the HDD in the transfer, but I replaced it in my old system and booted from it fine.
    b) I tried changing the IDE controller, but I had the same problem on both. My DVD drive chain works on both controllers.
    c) I tried swapping the jumpers - Master and Cable Select have the same effect.
I can only assume I have something set/not set in the BIOS, but can't for the life of me figure out what. I'm hardly an expert when it comes to internals, and I'm all out of ideas!

    Excelle.
Download Seagate’s disk install program and make sure you hard drive is totally erased and reformatted.  You may have an old MBR (Master Boot Record) on the old disk drive that’s causing the problem.

Cheers, I'll give that a go.

  • Promise EIDE Driver Problem

I am using the Promise onboard controller for IDE Channel 3 for a WD WD800JB HDD. Using the latest driver posted on the website, in order for XP to see the HDD I have to re-install the driver every time windows boots. Any solutions?
    Config:
    ICH5R: SATA RAID 0 (Boot/XP)
    IDE1: DVD ROM-0, ZIP250-1
    IDE2: DVDRW
    IDE3: IDE HDD

It's a strange problem that I heven't heard of before.
The driver you are using...Is it the one from MSI site or Promise website?
Does this happen on EVERY reboot or most times?
If you're not changing anything else(Bios settings, hardware) I would guess it's a problem with Windows or the driver itself. What does it show for drivers used by the promise controller in Device Manager? Mine shows 2 drivers (Fasttx2K.sys and ptipbmf.dll) with no conflicts. Yours may be different since I'm using Raid. See if there's any conflicts listed.
When you reboot and the drive disappears does the driver still show up in device manager?
First thing I would try is disabling all the other entries in MSConfig-Startup except the Promise driver and try a reboot. I'm not sure if it would load the Promise driver in Safe mode.
Try another version of the driver from MSI. Use the one on your CD even. Make sure you are using the Promise SATA driver for XP and not the Raid.
    Hope some of that helps.

  • EIDE Hard Drive list for Ultra 5

    Hi,
I recently bought an Ultra 5 and would like to upgrade the hard drive. What are my options, can I get any EIDE drive (any size any speed)?
A recommendation would also be appreciated!
    -cramped in 8Gig.

You'd best get your Solaris installation CD's
Boot from the first disk and then you're in an OS environment.
    OK boot cdrom -s <enter>
If you don't happen to use the "-s" command switch for single-user mode, the installation process will launch.
But ... that's OK as well because partway through you can right-click the GUI that eventually appears
and open a terminal window for command line interaction
while the install otherwise waits your interaction (which you simply don't give).

  • Do I need a fast system drive if i also have a RAID 0 array for media?

If my video and media files are all on a Fast RAID array then do i need a fast system drive?
Im building a system. The only thing on my system drive will be programs. And I will have a RAID array for my video and PSD files - but my System drive is an older UltraDMA EIDE133 250g Maxtor. This system drive is testing at 51mb/s Read, and 26mb/s write. (According to Blackmagic disk speed check program)
A New SATA drive tests at 53 write and 43 read. So should i bother upgrading my system drive to a RAPTOR 150 or stick with the older EIDE drive? Main Programs i use are Adobe After effects, premiere pro, Photoshop for uncompressed editing with blackmagic intensity.
    Specs:
    MB: Tyan K8WE
    AMD Opteron 270 (dual)
    4GB RAM.
    Nvidia Quadro FX 560
    Apple cinema Display 30'
4x500gb RAID array (2TB total) on Nvidia SATA motherboard controler.

    Jeron,
    Yes, you are probably.
    - Its i either spend $900 dollars or $200.
The best possible Rig is this; I spend $500 dollars on a dedicated PCI-X RAID controller card. I buy a Raptor 150g system drive $200. And then buying another 3 drives to add to the RAID array of 2 disks i already have = $300.
Or option 2: My motherboard (K8WE) has 4 SATA-II ports. So I could set up a 4 disk raid with what i have right now and be achieving 210+ mb/s read and write. My system drive would be off the IDE/133 channel. Then i would only have to spend $200 on 2 disks.
I have been trying to decipher if it is logical to spend that much more money - when it is possible i will only achieve maybe 50 more Megabytes a second. - and have windows and programs start faster.
A part of me says - "any time i try to save money on something it comes with calamity and disaster". vs. a part of me that says - "you could get more bang for your buck".

  • Max Hard Drive size for Ultra 10s

    Hi,
I'm kinda new to sun and I have a ultra 10s with a 9 Gig factory installed HD.
I was wondering what the maximum sized IDE hard drive that can be installed. I would like to mirror the system as well. I've seen another post about this but the max size was a 27 Gig drive and didn't explain how to mirror. I have Solaris 8 1/01 meda kit does that include the required software to mirror the drives. I think it's called Raid Manager?
    Many thanks

I'm not sure what the max drive size supported on an Ultra-10, but most
new Sun products are shipping with 40 GByte EIDE drives and use the
same chipset. Caveat emptor: Solaris <7 may or may not support EIDE
larger than 8GBytes, but since you are on Solaris 8 you should be ok.
For SCSI drives (requires a PCI SCSI HBA for the Ultra-10) the size can
be quite large. The most common large size SCSI drives today is 180
GBytes, but SCSI is designed to scale much larger.
You don't want RAIDManager for mirroring. Look for Solstice DiskSuite (SDS)
in your media distribution. If I'm not mistaken, it is cleverly hidden in
the "EA" directory on CD 2of2 in the media kit. Also, look for docs on
mirroring root using SDS on http://docs.sun.com

  • Fastest hard drive for the 12 inch PowerBook?

I'm upgrading my sis's powerbook, already bought 1 gig of ram to max it out, now I'm thinking of getting a new hard drive, the one currently inside is a 4200 rpm 60 gig drive, and I'm thinking thats the biggest bottleneck.
This is the 2004 version of the 12 inch, runs at 1.33 ghz, runs leopard fairly well with only 768 megs of ram, hence the reason I finally buckled down and decided that this thing needs a upgrade.
So finally to my question, what is the fastest drive possible for this computer? The options seem quite limited considering its an EIDE drive, and it needs to be 9.5mm, so from anybodies experience, can they direct me to the right drive with best performance?
    Thanks so much.
    Vito

Your best option may be an IDE SSD. I know these aren't the fastest SSDs out there, but I'd imagine their speed as comparable to a 7200 rpm drive. Newegg sells the 32GB SSD for around 90 bucks, which isn't a whole lot more expensive than the 5400 rpm 250GB drive. You get the benefits of a quiet drive, lower power consumption, and really fast read speed.

  • Save Itunes music on internal or external drive?

My new G5 has plenty of free space in it's internal drive, and it seems natural to save the Itunes songs there since it's selected as the default drive. Yet, I've always been told to save all my media on an external drive, so that the computer processing power isn't slowed down. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should keep my Itunes library on my external drive or my internal drive?
    Thanks, and Happy New Year.

I have had my music on the boot drive, a second internal drive and an external hard drive, and have found that with a G5, having the music on the boot drive results in the least amount of lag time from track selection to play, since that drive is almost always active.
However, since I have a very large music and video library, keeping it on the internal drive was not a good idea, so I moved it to an external drive. Although this was a 10,000 rpm firewire EIDE drive, there was still considerable lag time from selection to play. I ended up with a second internal SATA drive that has some lag time, but much less than the dedicated external.
I have never heard that having music on an internal drive slows down the processing power. I've never experienced any degradation of performance when iTunes was merely playing music, but if I was playing and managing music (creating playlists, importing tracks or adding art) at the same time, there was some slowdown between tracks until I added more memory (from 1 gb to 3 gb).
    Good luck,
    Lita

  • Recognising external hard drive problems

My new Macbook Pro won't recognise the external hard drive I'm trying to read. The external EIDE interface HDD is from my dead G4 Powerbook (OS X 10.4.2) and it is in a 'Mobile Disk' external data storage case that is allegedly compatible with Macs. The instruction booklet says that the necessary software is on my version of OS X (10.6.5) and that "all devices must select and jump to Master Mode".
I've plugged in but my macbook pro cannot see the external HDD, although it is ok with my usb flash drives. Can anyone help? How do I get my macbook to select and jump to Master Mode and then recognise the external HDD

The "select and jump to master" comment is an instruction for you to do with your hardware on your notebook EIDE drive. The drive has a 44 pin connector, of which 40 pins are used for data, and the other 4 are generally used for setting Master/Slave/Cable Select, just like with a desktop drive. You need to determine which pins to short together to force the drive into "master" mode. That is usually drive specific, so you would need to get that info from the support site of your drive's manufacturer.

I found some new information on this question. I apologize for not discovering it sooner, but I only came across it on the Western Digital website. It appears that any model introduced after June 2002, and the listed models, can handle a larger drive. Mine was introduced in April 2002, and purchased new in September 2002. But...see my notes at the end of this post.
Apple article HT2544 addresses this issue (see (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2544?viewlocale=en_US#bootrom), as does Western Digital Knowledge Base Answer ID 927 (see http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=927).

Are EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) supported in Mac systems
    Question
I am considering buying an EIDE drive larger than 137GB for my Mac system. Are EIDE drives larger than 137GB supported in Mac systems?
    Answer
Not all Mac systems can properly support EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary). In many cases, the system needs to be a newer Mac G4 or G5 system. According to Apple, there are two primary requirements that must be met to support these drives:
The computer must have Mac OS 10.2 or later
The system BootROM must provide support for the drive
For full details, please see Apple Document #86178.
Note: There are third-party controller cards designed for use with large EIDE drives and Macs. Please contact Apple or the card manufacturer to find out if a specific controller card will work with your Mac. According to Apple, you must still have OS version 10.2 or later, even with the controller card, to use the full drive capacity.
    +From Apple+:
There are two primary requirements that must be met for higher capacity hard drives to be fully utilized within a computer.
    1. The computer must have Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
    2. The computer must provide support for the drives via the BootROM.
    Products Affected
    Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.2, Mac OS X 10.5
Mac OS X 10.2 or later
The high capacity drive must be formatted using Mac OS X 10.2 or later in order for partition sizes beyond 128 GB to be recognized. If you plan to start the partition up from Mac OS 9.2.2, the partition sizes may be a maximum of 200 GB. If you have a drive that is larger than 200 GB in size, you will need to create multiple partitions with no single partition exceeding 200 GB in size. Once formatted, the drive will be recognized under the version of Mac OS 9.2.2 that comes with the Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) and later products.
If the drive is not formatted using Mac OS X 10.2 or later, the maximum volume size available is limited to approximately 128 GB.
    Support via the BootROM
The BootROM of Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors), Xserve, Power Mac G5, and any other model introduced after June 2002 can accommodate these larger drives.
For additional details on the volume and file size limitations under OS X, see:
Mac OS X: Mac OS Extended Format - Volume and File Limits
Mac OS X Server 10.0.3 and later: Maximum UFS Partition Size Is Less Than 1 TB
Note that the 2 conditions appear to be in the conjunctive, not disjunctive; i.e., both must be met.
My TiBook doesn't seem to fit the parameters required to recognize larger drives. It was introduced in April 2002, and is not a Power Mac with Mirrored Drive Doors, nor an XServe or Power Mac G5.
However, I bought a 160 GB external hard drive some years ago. Disk Utility recognized it as 160 GB when I connected it via Firewire 400, and successfully partitioned it into 34.44 GB and 114.35 GB volumes, totaling 148.79 GB. This is quite more than the 128 GB limitation that concerns us.
So I wonder: Is an easy test just connecting an external hard drive larger than 128 GB and seeing if the OS recognizes it?

  • Problem when booting from PATA drive on IDE-3 with SATA RAID on ICH5R

    Hello,
I have a PATA drive installed as Master on IDE-3 (Promise Controller), using Windows XP as the operating system. I also have an aditional drive as Slave on IDE-3.
I recently bought 2 SATA drives which I would like to use as a RAID array, so I connected them to SER-1 and SER-2, on the ICH5R controller.
I set the On-Chip IDE Configuration as follows:
    Native Mode
    SATA Only
    Keep PATA Active - Yes
    PATA Channel selection - Both
Configure SATA as Raid - Yes
I have my PATA Master IDE-3 drive as the firts boot device...unfortunatly now my system does not boot up.
It goes through the Intel Raid Bios screen, then the Promise Controller screen, and then when it was supposed to start loading windows, the screen remains black for about 2 minutes and after it I receive an error message warning me that Windows has detected a hardware configuration problem.
I went back to BIOS and changed the "Configure SATA as Raid" to NO, and now everything works fine, except for the fact that I have no RAID array installed.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks,
    Mihalis

The PATA IDE channel associated with the Promise controller is exclusively designed to be used as a RAID solution. It seems you have an invalid hardware installation of your 2 EIDE drives. Although you succesfully installed WinXP using that configuration, you're destined to have unpredictable behavior because of it.
WinXP looks to the BIOS first to identify hard drives. Then it does something that no other OS has done before (except maybe Win2K), it attempts to detect the hard drive directly through the wires itself. If it finds something, it installs resources to get it to work right. In your case, WinXP has bypassed the BIOS and detected the drives but doesn't really know where they are. WinXP just knows they are there so it supplied the necessary resources to complete the installation.
That drives that are connected to the Promise controller must use the Promise RAID drivers supplied with your motherboard so that the Promise controller can properly report to the OS. You could have conected the same two drives on the same controller, but they needed to be configured as RAID drives within the Promise controller utility.
To have them recognized as separate drives, you need to define each drive as a stripe, except you would have a 1 + 0 stripe instead of a 1 + 1 stripe. The drives are still connected the same way (Master/Slave) as you have them now. This congiguration would allow you to take advantage of the Ultra ATA 133 feature of that channel as long as you attached hard drives which support that standard.
Finally, you would set the "Onboard Promise IDE" menu as "RAID" to have the drives properly recognized through the BIOS. Currently, you have that set as "S-ATA" but you have no S-ATA drives installed on that controller.
I realize this does not resolve your original problem, but at this point, I would recommend that you back-up data at your earliest convenience and start over.
If you do decide to start over, you may want to consider attaching your S-ATA drives to the promise controller instead of on the Intel controller. Aside from getting better performance, it makes for a much simpler install through the Promise controller utility and then everything is manageable through the PAM utility at the desktop.

  • Scratch disks on EIDE... OK?

I have an 80GB EIDE sitting around doing nothing.
I'd like to use it for my Premiere scratch disk location (and for other "temp" files)... any performance issues with doing so (5000RPM, DMA)? I'm talking about real-world performance issues that I'd notice, as opposed to theoretical.
I'd be willing to wait an extra second or two to render (i.e hit Enter) or a few minutes when rendering a DVD as a tradeoff for getting to use this spare drive.

OK, I answered my own question here, and for anybody interested, the answer is a resounding "no", it does not work very well to put your scratch disks on an EIDE drive (at least for DV-AVI source, which is what I was using)!
The time required to render previews was significantly more (subjectively, I'd say about double)
But, oddly enough, it was the *playing* of those rendered files that was the deal-breaker: suffice it to say that it was not just bad, or slow, but completely unusable.
I went to my Preferences, and moved all my scratch files to one of my SATA-II drives, and everything started working perfectly again.

  • Serial ATA Controller Card for bigger hard drives on 8600/300

    Hi again,
Can a Serial ATA Controller Card work on the PowerMac 8600/300 as well as on the G4 tower?
How can I tell if the PCI slots are the same?
    Thanks
    web dude

According to the specs listed for Sonnet's Tempo Serial ATA controller card, it's compatible with the early PCI Macs - like the 8600, as well as newer G3s, G4s, etc. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 SATA controller card has gotten favorable feedback in the Forums. The 8600's PCI slots are probably PCI 2.0-compliant, whereas the G4 AGPs probably have PCI 2.1-compliant slots. Even though the FirmTek card specifies PCI 2.2-compliant slots, it's undoubtedly backward-compatible. If you just want to use larger IDE/EIDE drives in your 8600, the (now-discontinued) Acard Ultra ATA-66 PCI controller card is an inexpensive solution at $25. Unlike the Acard Ultra ATA-133 controller card, it has the 128 GB limit, so a 120 GB drive is the optimal choice for it. Newegg has a Seagate 120 GB ATA-100 (8 MB Cache) hard drive for $55. I've got (3) 8600/300s and they were one of Apple's better-designed towers, especially with the large cooling fan in the side panel. I installed a G3/266 MHz processor in one, along with a pair of 4 GB hard drives, an ATI Rage 128 graphics card, and FireWire and USB PCI cards. It runs so well and quietly, that I'm reluctant to part with it - in spite of the fact that I rarely use it anymore. With the hard drive mounting plate on the bottom of the chassis floor, it can accommodate more hard drives than the shortened version of the same mini-tower case, used for the beige G3s.

I have a K7N2 Delta MB with SATA running RAID 0, also I have HD pluged into the Primary EIDE cable slot, using SC ( cable select ), everything works fine.   What I want to know is if anyone has had any luck using BOOT MAGIC (comes with Patition magic) to duel boot between the SATA and the EIDE drive.  Also I have found that once I set the SATA to be bootable AND loaded XP then I was not able to boot from any other device, floppy or EIDE. The floppy works fine when I use it once running on XP.  I have the floppy set as the first boot device the EIDE drive c: as second boot device and SCSI as third boot device, the system always boots from SCSI.  Any suggestions out there great ones?
Never mind I found the answer.
I took off SCSI from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd boot.  enable other boot and all works fine now.

Wonkanoby, You are now officially my hero. Did exactly what you said. IT WORKED. My system screams now.   Thanks.
