I took it to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and was told that if I wanted to get a new hard drive (HD), I would have to give up my old HD, which means I would have to forfeit any possibility of trying to retrieve as much from my old HD as possible. He quoted us the new HD at $250 tax included. My feeling is if I pay for my computer, everything on that computer, including the old HD, is mine and that I should not give it up unless I want to. He claimed it's Apple's policy to retrieve old HDs. He also goes on to say that I owned my iMac for seven years and that most iMacs last for 3-5 years. He was clearly pushing us to purchase a new computer and trying to discourage us from getting a new HD. What's the purpose of having a Genius Bar if they only push you to get a new computer instead of fixing your current one? I was also hesitant to give up my old HD due to privacy issues.

A java applet popped this up on my screen, no idea where to look on my machine - it's only the second time its happened in many weeks but I would like to be able to interact with the cause.
Java was installed from Sun's download in June 2006 on Windows Adv. Server. Hello,
I had iTunes crashing when connecting to the iTunes Store with an Apple ID. I tried unsucessfully all the solutions posted on the many threads of people having the same issue. So I decided to reinstall Windows. A clean Windows 8.1 install from the Microsoft DVD. And guess what, it is still crashing! How can this even be possible?
The problem:
- iTunes crashes when connecting to the store with an Apple ID. It connects, briefly freezes, then crashes.
- I can access the store without an Apple ID without crashes. But it crashes as soon as I connect with an Apple ID.
The system:
- A clean, fully updated, Windows 8.1 Pro w/ WMC install from the Microsoft DVD.
- Applications I installed, along with iTunes: Adobe Reader, Google Chrome, Skype, Office 2013. Nothing else. No crapware. No nothing. These are fairly common applications that shouldn't conflict with iTunes.
- Antivirus is the built-in Windows Defender.
- Firewall is the built-in Windows Firewall.
- Intel HD Graphics 3000 on an Acer V3-571-6486
- I have not moved Apple's folder from Romaing and Local AppData of the old systems... So it's a clean iTunes profile.
- I can sucessfully sign-in to the iTunes Store with this account on another computer
- I have tried with multiple accounts on this computer, all crashing
There are tons of threads about this. I tried all the solutions posted, including:
- Adding "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" to the PATH environment variable
- Copying QTMovieWin.dll from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes"
- Moving QTMovieWin.dll from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes"
- Updating the graphics card to the latest available driver from Intel's website (9.17.10.3517, 2014-10-04)
- Downgrade the graphics driver (9.17.10.3347, 2014-01-29)
- Use the graphic's driver from Acer's website.
- Use Microsoft's Basic VGA Driver
- Disable the Graphic's Adapter entirely
- Have tried to monitor the process with ProcMon, looking for a hint like a missing file or registry entry, but have not found anything helpful.
These solutions seem to have worked for almost everyone, but not me. The crash details in the Windows Application log are useless. Faulty module name is 'unknown'.
I am out of solutions. Is there anything left to do? Can anyone out Apple debug the dump file or something? Is there any way to contact Apple about this issue?

Ok, so it sounds like there are two issues here we want to address, the first being the iTunes Store connection issue and the second being iTunes not recognizing your iOS devices.
First, I'd start with troubleshooting the recognition by following the steps in here:

Many of the internet radio stations that I usually listen to are no longer working. When I click on them, they either get stuck in connecting or just jump to the next station below. What gives?
Same thing here. Always listened to 96.9 The Eagle but not anymore. Skipped to the next station down.

I am trying to connect R/3 4.7 server from SAP GUI 640 (patch 16).
I am able to login but when I execute transactions which extract data(heavy) eg. ST22, PFCG, ST03 , it is giving the below error.

My iphone 4 is not working and I cant reset it from the computer either because it wont connect to it I need help!!!
1. I tried connecting it to itunes for a system reset and it didnt work.
2. The phone wont even turn on!!!If the phone wont turn on it sounds like it needs to be charged. Plug it into a charger and wait about 15 minutes and try turning it on while still charging. Have you tried holding in your home button with the on/off button held in? Hold them both together until the apple logo comes up and then release them. The screen will blink off an on while it is resetting. I still think this is a battery issue. Good luck~

10.5.1 crashing while connecting to network
Three day old MacBook 2.2. Original 10.5 updated to 10.5.1. Used migration assistance to transfer data and settings from PowerBook. Have now crashed five times while initiating sign on to a network. These are hard freezes with not so much as a keyboard shortcut or point movement possible.
While I am connecting via Bluetooth to a cell phone for internet access, my neighbor running an early 2007 MacBook Pro had a similar crash while connecting to a wired network. This leads me to believe that it is an OS 10.5 issue.
As another issue, three hours after I bought the MacBook and after updating and migrating, it went to sleep and could not be woken. Lost data on that one.
Please help! After 10 years of owning a 3400, TiBook, AlBook, and a couple of even older desktops, I have never had anything like this level of instability.
Any suggestions?OK, number 7! Typing a post in a non computer forum and my cell phone logged the connection off as it often does when inactive. Froze when I attempted a reconnect. Airport was off for sure this time. As in the other times, some activity is possible before everything freezes. Nothing functional until this time, I was able to select what I had just written and put a clipping on the desktop. Wasn't sure that had worked or been saved until I rebooted, but there it was.
I waited for a while in the frozen state just in case it would fix itself but the temperature and fan started ramping up quickly. Still no crash report!
On a hunch, I looked in my user library. There were a number of application crash reports from my old Powerbook that I migrated from.
Any other thoughts? I should just call AppleCare, but have no access to a landline and am running out of minutes fast so any hold time will be costly. -

The error 10054 as you indicated in your message, is normally due to an error of the TCP/IP connection between 2 nodes, which has been lost.
There can be a variety of reasons for this from an incorrect termination of the connection on one side to physical network problems etc.

This could be due to hardware problems with the network, or to network problems. Please use the 'NIPING' tool to trace and check the network connection as per note 500235.

I also had the problem of a disconnecting wifi while my imac was sleeping. I did not have the reconnecting issue after sleep, but the lost connection issue during sleep which made it impossible to reach my imac for things like homesharing, apple tv or remote desktop. I have a late 2012 iMac with a clean ML 10.8.2 on it and wirelessly connected to an apple time capsule (same as an airport extreme). My partner has a mid 2007 iMac, also with an ML 10.8.2 on it.
I tried every single solution I could find on the internet, such as changing the router's security from wpa2 to wpa, changing the MTU from automatic to manual 1453, router reboots, re-installations, re-configurations, keychain clean-ups, everything.
Eventually I solved my problem with these steps and now it works as a charm. I can still find the iMac with the remote app, even after 12 hours of sleep:
My time capsule router is set on automatic MTU and encrypted with WPA2 and I use the 5Ghz network!
1. Cleaned all the wifi passwords in keychain on my iMac
2. Created a new network location in system preferences
3. In this location I deleted the bluetooth pan and bluetooth dun connection.
4. In this location I changed the preferred connection-order to wifi on #1 and ethernet on #2.
5. Restarted my iMac.
Now I still have a connection when it sleeps and I can wake it to low profile using the remote app (homesharing) and everything works fine.

Server Connection is Lost or Server is in DownTime Status.
LogOff and try again or Contact your Basis Person.

Getting Blue Screen of Death when connecting my iPod, just upgraded to Version 5, am running Norton Anti Virus 2005 (about to try turning that off), the issue started when I first tried to sync Outlook now it crashes on connection......
