Eject Key makes my MBP Logout and Restart

When I press the Eject Key (uppermost right corner key above Delete and to right of F12), my laptop Logs out and restarts. No warning, no options. A white Eject image (up pointing triangle sitting on a bar) ghosts on the screen for a moment, then the screen goes to blue (all open files are lost of course) and then the deskstop rebuilds itself as in a restart.
I'm dumbfounded. I thought maybe this was a new keyboard feature that I could change with a choice via System Prefs. Not a malfunction.
But I couldn't find it listed anywhere under Keyboard Shortcuts, and I don't see anyone else complaining about this key behavior on the web.
Has anyone had this experience or know what's going on? I changed my keyboard (old one got splashed by water spill and keys would type groups of characters), but the new keyboard behaves the same way.
Can anyone suggest how I might fix this so the Eject Key does not basically reboot my computer? The Eject Key, by the way, does not eject any disk that may be in the slot.

If the new keyboard is acting the same way as the old regarding the eject key, it appears a hardware issue. Take your computer to an Apple Store.

  • My iPod Touch 4g 8 gig keeps restarting randomly while I'm playing.. It makes some buzz noise and restarts, it's really annoying. What do I do?

I've just purchased this iPod Touch. I would turn on my ipod touch 4g, 8gig. Then I would play my music.. While playing it, it would continuously restart, and make some buzz noize. Charging it is a hassle too. Even right now for some reason it keeps charging, and un charging, charging, and un charging, repeatedly
What should I do? I can turn my music on right now, set it to autoplay, and it will continue to throw itself into the restart screen, and restart. Please help, thank you.

  • My CD will not eject, tried holding down the trackpad and restarting still won't eject.

My cd will not eject.  I tried restarting my Mac while holding down the trackpad, still it will not eject.  I hear it try to open but nothing happens.

If you have a Retina model then you don't have a built in Superdrive, it would be external. As far as I know the holding down of the trackpad to Force Eject a CD/DVD disc from the drive only works on models that have built in CD/DVD drives. So you'll need to take ther drive apart to get the disc out.
More than likely your external Superdrive has failed in some way, like the moter that is used to take in and eject the disc has failed.
In the future buy a new DVD drive that is a tray load design. Any brand will work with your Mac. It does not have to have the Apple name on it to work properly on any Mac computer.

  • MacPro Eject Button is Logging me out and Restarting... WHY??!!

I have some applications running on my machine, some things copying from one drive to another. I notice that my Dvd tray is open so I press the eject button on the keyboard to close it and Blue Screen. Everything closes and starts again from scratch. Its not shutting down. No chime on restart. It appears to be logging out and logging back in again.
How do I stop this behavior?

    Okay,
What I did after I posted the question was ...
I ran disk utility and repaired permissions on the startup drive.
Its working okay now. Don't know why this was actually happenning but I will keep your idea on file in case it happens again.
    Thanx

  • New MacBook Pro in Sleep and Restarts Due to Problem

I recently purchased a 13" MacBook Pro and my MBP will go into the screen saver/sleep mode while I am not using it. However, when I click the trackpad so I can sign back in, my MBP freezes and restarts. Once it finishes restarting it pops up with an error message stating that it restarted due to a problem. I've done a hardware check and I've updated all the software, and no known issues were found. I do not know what could be causing the problem, any ideas as to what might be the problem?

I can see all my backups just fine, but for instance the folder "documents" or "desktop" will have the forbidden sign on top of it. So I can't see what's in those folders, cause I don't have permissions to view them. It's not a big problem, and maybe I should delete all the old backups, I just don't understand why I won't be able to view them.
Are you seeing this in Time Machine, or via the Finder?
Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, to keep us mere mortals from altering them via the Finder, as that can hopelessly corrupt them.
We may need to know just how you set up your new Mac.
There are two similar ways to do it; the easiest is to use +Setup Assistant.+ When you first started up the new Mac and selected your language, you were asked if you wanted to "transfer" your users, apps, and data (see #19 in theFrequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details).
If you did not select that option, then you would have made one user in the setup process; restarted, then used the +Migration Assistant+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to transfer things.
It sounds like you may have used +Migration Assistant,+ but are not using the same user account to access the backups. Time Machine won't let one user access a different user's backups.
But try the Browse option, per #E2: hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar, or right-click the TM icon in your Dock. You'll see a selection screen showing all the disks/partitions that have TM backups on them. Select the one you want, and you'll be taken to the normal TM "Star Wars" interface, where you should see all the backups on that disk/partition.

  • IPod 30G 5g Crashing and restarting

My ipod which has been working fine up until the new update is crashing during two scenrios. One is playing podcasts, both video and audio, video will play for a bit then crash. The audio ones will make the ipod crash and restart after hitting play.
It is also going through the crash and restart cycle randomly when having my songs playing on shuffle.
Is anyone else having these problem, possible found a solution, or word when a solution might be coming? Thanks.

I think my problem may be similar. My new 5.5G iPod (and I just got it today) crashed while trying to play a video, I restarted it and now it is just repeating the process of restarting over and over, it shows the Apple logo for about ten seconds and I can hear it whirring, then it clicks and it flashes a blank screen and starts the process over. I really don't want to have to take it back. I tried to restart it again and nothing happened. I can't even connect it to the computer!

  • Volume and Eject Keys No Longer Work After Boot Camp 2.1 Update

Earlier this evening I allowed the Apple Software Update app in Windows to update Boot Camp to version 2.1. I allowed the computer to restart following a successful installation of the update. I've restarted two more times since then. Ever since the update (including before the computer restarted for the first time following the update), the volume and eject keys on my keyboard don't work. I also have an Apple Wireless Keyboard (one of the 2003-2007 era white/clear ones) and it exhibits the same problem. Both keyboards otherwise work fine. The computer also otherwise works fine, and there's no evidence of any driver problems.
    Some other potentially relevant information:
1- The Boot Camp icon is no longer present in the Windows System Tray.
2- The Boot Camp Control Panel is still present in the Windows Control Panel and it works fine.
3- All settings in the Boot Camp Control panel are unchanged from their defaults. In particular, I have confirmed that "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is still unchecked.
4- The Windows Device Manager properly recognizes both keyboards as Apple Keyboards.
I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate on an early 2008 MacBook; system specs are in my signature. Any ideas?
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and double-thanks if you can respond with any suggestions!

Ah, the joy of working with computers...:( Apparently, from my woes with the same problem, the Apple Keyboard Manager is rightfully entered into the Run directory in the Windows registry at HKLM/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run.
Why it doesn't start I still have to find out, but this may be because I have Parallels Workstatio installed as well and switch back between a virtualized Windows and a Bootcamp Windows. However, after installing Bootcamp 2.1 first and then SP3 IN THE BOOTCAMP ENVIRONMENT everything seems to work, except the Energy Options taskbar icon and Apple Keyboard Manager.
Will keep you posted on any progress I make.
Apple Support, BTW, was absolutely abysmal, with them even refusing to accept the ticket at all, on the grounds that they have no knowledge about Windows. Apple, get your support fixed!

  • Eject DVD script and map to eject key?

Could someone instruct me on how to create an eject script to open my SuperDrive DVD tray and map it to the "Eject" key? I need a powerful programming solution here and I don't mind opening some sensitive system files if necessary.
For some reason my aluminum keyboard "Eject" key will not work and the menu extra (eject.menu) turns blue and freezes. However, dragging a CD/DVD to the trash works fine, disk utility works, itunes works and toast works. OS X 10.5.5/6 does not work.
I'd like to be able to command my DVD drive to open when I need it.
    Thanks

Thanks for your help, but I did an archive and install less than a week ago because I had trouble with the 10.5.6 update. All seems fine now except the Media Eject Key. Oh, I also tried a 2nd Aluminum keyboard from a new iMac, and I tried an older white keyboard from a G5 iMac.
This is becoming very weird. Nothing seems to be working. Even eject.menu (menu extras) only works a couple times and then turns solid blue and freezes. I have repaired permissions many times and between every updater and restart along the update path back to 10.5.6. No abnormal problems detected. Also ran DiskWarrior from another hard drive. Oh... and started up from a second drive with 10.5.5 and still will not open!
I have even reflashed my DVR-115D back to 1.18 as normal (down from 1.22) and that didn't help either. I know it's not the drive because all other programs and terminal can open it no problem.
Only thing left is a firmware issue or keyboard interface coding. Anyway to force the keyboard firmware 1.0 to re-update? I tried to rerun it but it says already updated.
Maybe if I zap the Pram??????? Haven't tried that yet.

  • Volume and eject keys are not working!

Hello, i have a problem with my USB apple keyboard that come in pack with my iMac. When i turn on the computer everything is working fine but after using it for about 10 minutes my volume and eject keys stop working at all. What can you say about that? And when i disconnect and connect the keyboard from the computer it starts working again but not for a long time thought.

    Hello Folks,
Got my super new 20" duo and i a having exactly the same problems. Volume keys don't work randomly, mouse stops responding and eject works most of the time but I have had problems.
Tried different usb port getting the same.
Will try another k'board and see if that makes a difference.
I have seen another post else where and the chap got a replacement from apple. His mouse wouldn't function sparadically.

  • Apps are crashing and Eject key logs me out

This has been happening for about a week now:
Native OS X apps like Safari, Mail and iTunes will repeatedly crash and won't re-open. They will open for just a second or two, then crash again. Restarting the computer fixes the problem, but then a day or so later it will start happening again.
Also, and not sure if it's related, when I press the Eject key the computer immediately takes me to the login screen (and quits all open applications, no chance to save anything). When I'm on the login screen if I hit the Eject key again it flashes to a blue screen, then the login screen appears again.
This computer was replaced about 4 months ago because the old one was having really weird problems as well (not the same problems). Both are Mac Pros and both have a RAID card installed.
    Any ideas?

Do you see any messages in the Console utility that might explain those behaviors?

  • Remap volume and eject keys on aluminum keyboard?

Is there a way to remap the volume, mute and eject keys on the Apple
    (wired) aluminum keyboard?
I'd rather have them above the keypad if that's possible - like they
    were on previous Apple keyboards.

    Something vaguely relevant from MacFixit:

  • Fn Keys and Eject Keys Don't Work in Windows

I'm fairly good to go with Snow Leopard and Boot Camp and on installing Windows on my wife's 13" MacBook Pro that I finally convinced her to get, I had a "hard drive not big enough" during the SP3 update BUT found a solution for that, however, all the threads I read on the above topic related to Boot Camp versions of the 2.x genre and I have 3.x genre. So, does anyone have any ideas how to fix this on the Windows side?
    - All function keys (excepted F3) are non-functional.
    - Eject key does not work
    - No right click of any kind other than with a mouse
    - No scroll features
    - No Boot Camp icon in the tray
Lastly (and just an add in) on the OSX side, her Mac HD icon was not there since the Boot Camp assistant was launched AND dummy me (I did this once before - I know idiot) tried to drag it from Finder to the desk top and exploded it. So, how do I get the Mac HDD and icon back in both Finder AND the Desktop.
Thanks in advance for those who have an offering.

Actually I didn't trash Boot Camp, it never populated in the tray after the install. Moreover, the thing i destroyed was the MacHDD from the desktop and from the Go Finder listing and want to get that puppy back
Boot Camp is running just that the F keys other than F3 are not functional nor is the Eject key . . PLUS . . as I say there is no tap to click, not two finger scrolling, and no 3 or 4 finger functions operational features.
    Please help!

Difficulty using a projector. I have a MBP 17" and am running 10.6.8. Often I need to make a Powerpoint or other presentation  at a client and I want to connect my computer to their projector. Either it won't display on the projector at all. Once it displayed but the presentation mode was on the big screen and the presentation I wanted to show was on my MBP screen. I have the adapter( white ones) to attached to the projector cables.  I am so frsutrated...it looks so silly not to have a computer work during a presentation..
Another problem one the rare occasion that it shows on the screen is that the presentation does show just my desk top.  Any ideas?
    Thanks !

You often have to turn off Mirroring to be able to set the second "screen"s resolution to something reasonable. When you do, the two screens become an "Exceeded Desktop" joined along one edge, and the Arrange pane in displays prefs can allow you to specify what edge. Initially, it will show a vacant extension of the built-in screen's desktop.
The mouse moves freely across that shared edge, and can allow you to drag the presentation window across to the the projector screen and re-size it to fit.
