Eject usb disk after Timemachine backup done! But SpotLight prevent!

Hi, all
OS: 10.8.2
How can I disable Spotlight indexing the Timemachine volume ?
After I backup with TimeMachine, I can't eject the usb disk because the SpotLight(mds daemon) is indexing on the usb disk, How Can I disable this. I don't want to plug in my usb disk all the way I am using the macbook pro. And I don't want to completely disable spotlight.
I have try mdutil -i off -d /Volumes/TimeMachineV1
but it failed, says can't disabled on the tm volume, ***?!

I would just let the indexing complete - it will stop indexing with the drive disconnected and begin indexing again when the drive is connected. It may take a couple of hours or more to fully index the drive the first time but it should be easy going after the drive is first indexed.
I'd just wait it out - it shouldn't take too long.

Try cleaning the lens and see if that will restore functionality to the DVD drive.  Use a DVD lens cleaning disk, if you have a can of compressed air, shoot some into the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth)  around a business card and insert it gently inside the slot.
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and get a free diagnosis from them.

I am also having a similar issue. I used Adobe Lightroom and my whole display goes black. Even my laptop screen and the lights on the keyboard go black. I can still hear the fan running, so I assume it is just the display. This is my first Mac and I have had nothing but issues. I think I am going back to Windows after this.

  • Mount usb disk after boot

    Hi,
How can I mount automatically an usb disk after boot?
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Read this fine article and use it to set up a udev rule, to specifically name the device.  (Otherwise you may never know where it pops up in the disk naming scheme.)
Also note -- after reading the article -- there are plenty of examples of rules in /etc/udev/ files that may further help.

  • My backup drive is no longer bootable after TimeMachine backup to it. Why?

When I purchased a Lacie Porche 350 GB Firewire drive, I partitioned it properly via Disk Utilities and backed up my entire Hard drive using SilverKeeper to one of the two drives created by partitioning, resulting in an OS 10.4.10 Tiger bootable drive. Which I tested and it booted up perfectly. The day prior to upgrading to Leopard OS, I used SilverKeeper to back up everything on my hard drive again, since there were a lot of system software, security, also software programs and utilty updates on board since mm initial backup. Afterwards, I checked out the bootability of my back up drive (partition), which again worked perfectly.
After installing Leopard, TimeMachine recognized and asked if I wanted it to back up my hard drive (with Leopard O)S to the same (it recognized) named backup drive (partition) and I clicked yes. TM's backup of my entire hard drive went quickly and without a hitch. I knew TM's backup was not a bootable type, but figured that I still had a bootable Tiger system on the same drive if I needed to use that in an emergency and decided to test that out again.
Was wrong! Previously bootable drive no longer showed up in Startup Disk to select from in System Preferences. Thus no longer bootable! I now have 2 full backups of my entire hard drive (one with Tiger, the other with Leopard) on the one external drive, neither are bootable. Guess I can boot up from the installer DVD in emergency, but that wasn't the reason why I made a bootable backup drive to begin with.
Don't know if and what TM did that rendered the formerly bootable drive unbootable. Did nothing to change the previously working bootable drive. Anyone else have similar experience after running TM? Idea of cause? Suggestions, or work-a-round? Is this a known issue, or should this be sent to Apple's Feedback?
    Thank you kindly,
    superush

The TimeMachine backups were made to the same bootable clone partition that the Tiger bootable clone is on mentioned in my original post. The bootable clone was backed up there via SilverKeeper, which is included in the software that came with the 350 GB ,LaCie Porche external firewire drive.
Am now thinking that perhaps that version of SilverKeeper, which was recognized by my OS Tiger, may not be recognized by Leopard OS, and when used TM to make backup to same partition cloned bootable drive, that may have made my bootable SilverKeeper backup clone null and void.
    Could that be the possibility?
    Best regards,

Problem: My Pioeneer DVD-unit doesn’t accept the grand new DVD-RW disk. The DVD unit is just checking the disk for 30 sec and then ejecting the disk. On the contrary I can read the same DVD brand type DVD-RW whre I have burnt some songs with my Amilo PC.

USB connections are by nature designed to be plugged and unplugged as needed.
Unless the BackupDrive is backing up, you could potentially drag the drive to the Trashcan before disconnecting the cable, and then disconnect.
The Scanner should also have no issues being unplugged.
If You don't need the keyboard while burning, You could unplug that.
The Mouse you'll likely need, to interact with the burning software, so probably that would not be a good thing to unplug.
All in all the Scanner and Keyboard should be the least hassle to unplug.
For the future you may want to buy a USB HUB so you have more USB ports you can use without having to unplug things.

  • HOT backup done but archives deleted after end backup, so need backup from

    Hello Team,
I did HOT CLONE upto sequence :-
alter database begin backup; and golbal change#=12564
alter database end backup ; and sequence#=12675
Now the problem is my archives are deleted between 12564 and 12675,
I want to take backup for the sequences deleted from production, How can i do??

    No, It's not possible.
Datafiles contains the data being thrown into the database from its inception (first use of the Database itself). That too, the data is scattered inside the datafiles, so you couldn't guess that based upon time when they're filled up i.e. it's not like one data file will be used first and other one next...based upon the factors like how your tablespaces are defined etc...Data will be scattered.
As someone answered, try to copy archives from production (OS level copy) and recover the Database here.
PS:Please dont forget to change thread status to answered if it possible when u belive your thread has been answered, it pretend to lose time of other forums user while they are searching open question which is not answered, thanks for understanding

  • Two Trojans found after TimeMachine backup?

HelloSeveral weeks ago I and after a weekly manual backup I discovered that I had two Trojans and after several attempts two get rind of then they keep popping up every time I do a TM backup. When I click unlock to delete the Trojans they both disappear until next time I do a TM back.Has anyone else found these on their computers and if so how did you get them off for good?Cheers Colin Please see attached for the little nastiest.

    Hey MiltonX
Sorry you're having trouble with this. It sounds like the threat is probably being backed up somewhere in the time machine.
First thing to do is take a look at the path where the threats are located. You can usually find this in the quarantine manager after  you authenticate as administrator. If you don't see it listed in the scan results, you can either click "reveal in finder" from the quarantine manager, or if you can't find the full path that way, pull up the scan log by clicking the small gear icon in the "scans" menu and selecting "View scan log."
Once you've found the full path to the threat, take a look at this article. I'm guessing the path will be located somewhere in /Backups.backupdb/. If that's the case, you can skip to step 18 and follow the instructions under the Time Machine Archive heading. That will walk you through removing the backedup threat and hopefully prevent it from coming back anymore.
Hope that makes sense, but if you have any questions, let me know!

  • Time machine backup done but hard drive activity continues

I backup infrequently my macbook pro to an external firewire hard drive. Prior to today's backup, I changed a setting in the control panel to exclude the system, applications and library. I happened to notice that the prior backup failed. So today, I initiate the backup and when it finishes (as seen in the control panel window and with a still icon at the top of the screen, the hard drive continues to have activity. It is still going at the same level of activity now for over 90 min. A second time machine backup has taken place as well.
Why is this happening. I am not using the drive for anything else. If I unmount the drive, will the backup fail? Is the backup still progressing, even though all other indications say it is finished? Could this activity be the computer indexing the drive? I am not using the drive for any other reason today. I am not looking at folders or moving any files. 214 of 465 GB are available as seen from the time machine preference window.
I am using Leopard with the latest software updates.

Time Machine will do a "second pass" backup if more changes have occurred while it was doing the first one. Ordinarily, that's very quick and most folks rarely notice it. But if there's trouble on either your internal or TM disk, it can take a while.
Could this activity be the computer indexing the drive?
Possibly. Spotlight and Time Machine both use the mds process, and on occasion the two conflict, especially on large backups, slowing or even hanging the backup. Exclude your TM drive from Spotlight indexing, at least temporarily, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
It could also be that your drive is beginning to fail.
Part of your problem may lie in the word "infrequently" -- TM usually works best if you let it do it's hourly backups. After several days, especially if there have been lots of changes, it may do a new, full backup.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post the messages here, along with details: how frequent is "infrequent;" how much data is on your internal HD; how big is your TM disk.
And please update your profile, so we know what kind of Mac you have, and which version of Leopard you're on (it now shows 10.4.11!)

  • Internet and usb disk sharing fine for Mac but doesn't work for XP

I have a new Macbook, and I also bought the Airport Extreme and a 500gig usb drive to share over the network with our Windows XP desktop. Everything works fine in the Mac, but not in the XP machine. It connects just fine to the base station, but there is no internet connection and it does not connect to the drive. The drive shows up in Bonjour but when I enter the password the error it gives me is that I need to have NetBIOS enabled. I made sure NetBIOS was enabled and still doesn't work. Uninstalled and reinstalled all the software... same problem. Could there be an issue with the network card on the windows computer? Any other suggestions?
The XP machine connected just fine to the internet the first day I had the airport extreme set up, but the next morning there was no interent connection. It works just fine connecting to the neighbor's wireless.

I am having trouble understanding what you are saying.
Microsoft Office can't run on the iPad, only on the Mac. There should be a 25-digit product key you are asked to enter when you run the installer disc. This code is found on the box it came in. If you are not being prompted to enter this code, try to re-run the installer.

  • Aperture Library on External USB disk

    Hello
My internal, 250GB disk on my iMac is almost full.
Are there any performance / reliability issues I should be aware of of moving my 50GB aperture library to an external USB disk ??
I don't use time machine to back it up - just the aperture vaults. I would probably back it up to a second external USB drive.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Andrew

USB2 is a poor connectivity method for hard drives on Macs, adequate for backup where speed is unimportant but bad news for a Library. Aperture performance is largely about the Library, so you want it on a relatively unfilled internal drive, definitely not on an external USB drive.
Hard drives slow as they fill above 40% or so. Take enough data off the internal drive to maintain at least 100 GB free space and keep the Aperture Library on the internal drive with Referenced Masters on external drives.
In the future buy large hard drives (currently the 1 TB size is cost effective) that have multiple connectivity methods that include Firewire800 and eSATA. One good source is OWC: <http://www.owcomputing.com/>.
    Good luck!

  • TC restoring from a USB disk

I have a problem trying to restore from a USB drive.
The setup is simple with 2 disks (La Cie) connected to the TC and backing up as planned, at least I can find all files in TM so should be working.
One disk is holding all music file, appox. 100GB. I lost some music files so I wanted to restore.
Restore starts up and ask whether I want to "keep original" "Keep both" or "replace" the folder. Problem is no matter what i do the following message comes up
+The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Music Content” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)+
That is regardless which drive I want to recover to, I even make the "Music Content" folder unique but same result.
I hope somebody have an idea on how to recover my data from TC, in the mean time I try whatever I can figure out

    Hi Podini,
    Thank you for your answer.
I did all the stuff you have mentioned in your guides, before asking. Your guide is excellent as you cover the issues not described anywhere else, as setting up and running a TC is not really flawless. I had 3 crashes since I bought it a few years ago. But this issue was new.
I did just found a solution, of cause not ideal at all but it works.
    1. Instead of recovering to the USB drive I recovered to my harddisk (desktop) -with "recover to.." after securing the size of the recovery files was not take more space than what I have on my HD.
    2. Then move the USB drive to the laptop and copy over to the USB.
    3. Then move the USB back to the TC and make a recover of the desktop again.
    etc. etc.
I tried to recover to another USB disk connected to the TC, but that took forever, worked but slow.
I had to do it in 4 steps as I did not have 100GB space on my laptop HD.
It is not ideal but works, which is of cause the main purpose.
I really like the TC but it does takes a bit of insight to get it up running and utilizing everything. It could be nice if setup software was more clear and comprehensive. As there is a lot of good and relevant questions in this forum.
Thanks again and hope you can use my solition

  • USB Failure after Updates

I see lots of people with USB problems after the latest update, but I have had this problem with every single update apple has released since i bought my powerbook. Rebooting SOMETIMES helps, but generally it clears up on its own. Still, after every update I install I can only use my right side USB port for a few days and it gets very annoying. Anyone come up with more permanent solutions for this problem?

Some have found that resetting the power management unit (PMU) fixes where one side of the USB stops working. Apple note with instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Also, there have recently been a number of odd issues associated with doing system updates via the software update function. I've started doing combo updates, which is a more thorough, complete system update. Before doing a combo update, I clear the system and kernal caches, using OnyX, although there are other programs that do that too.

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

After ejecting a disk plugged into the USB port using Finder, I am now getting "The disk was not properly ejected" message.  This didn't used to happen.  How can this be corrected?

When you right (control) click on the disk and click eject "disk name", do you pull it immeadiatly or wait a few seconds for it to unmount? Try waiting and see if you get the same message. If you do, when the disk is connected go to applications/utilities/disk utility, after opening DU, select the volume in question from the left side bar and try a permissions repair, you may also run verify disk and see if it comes up with any errors (they will be in red)
