Ejecting installation disk

When I try to eject disk "OJ4500G510g-m A window comes up saying it could not be ejected because "HP installer" is using it even though I installed it and my Printer is working.  My question:  why is this happening?

You are welcome. Normally Windows OS can be downloaded only from a source provided by Microsoft due to Software Licensing policies. Since the Recovery media for your PC is Licensed for HP it will be available only from HP as a Recovery media package. • Why does imac G5 eject leopard install disk

Why does imac G5 eject leopard install disk?  I'm trying to help my father get online to read the newspaper using an iMac G5 1.8 GHz 17".  I've installed a new hard drive and reinstalled software and rus software updates until I've reached 10.4.11 and the lovely "your software is up to date" message.  When I put in the Leopard 10.5.1 Install DVD, it auto ejects within 15 seconds and never gets mounted and never shows on desktop.  When I place the same DVD in my Intel MacBook Pro running 10.6.8, the disk mounts and the install window opens as usual.  Any suggestions on what i'm missing here? thanks

  • Preview holds up ejecting an external disk

    Reporting a problem/work around
I have most of my files on an external hard drive.  When I open a file in Preview (this usually happens with image files), then quit preview, the hard drive cannot be ejected because the disk is still in use.  It is possible that iCloud or some other service keeps Preview from terminating.  The workaround I've found is:
    1.  Open up a terminal
    2.  Type:     lsof | grep /Volumes/MyHardDrive
    3.  This returns a statement that contains a number, Preview, the file that Preview opened when Preview was running.  Note this number #
    4.  Type:    kill -9  #
    5.  Wait a second, then eject your hard drive as usual.
There should be a better way.  Does anyone know a better way to quit Preview other than command-Q?

If I do this will I still be able to play music on it?
    Yes.
How much trouble will this cause the next time I sync with I tunes?
    None whatsoever.

  • Help to eject or unmount disk upon shutdown

    Hello all,
Please take pity on a newbie and answer what I hope is a really simple script question. This is my first attempt at Apple Script.
I have searched for a script that will eject (unmount) a disk upon shutdown, but haven't found anything on this board. Do you have a reference to an archived script or an example of such code?
    Background:
I have a new FireWire drive (Western Digital MyBook). It is OSX compatible, but not well integrated. For example, it should power off when I shut down the computer. It does so, but only if I unmount it first. If you have a similar drive, I should note that this behavior began when I reformatted it to HFS+ (Journaled) from the OEM FAT32. I would like to autmate the un-mounting upon shut-down via an Apple Script.
I am running OSX 10.3.9 on an E-Mac. As for my programming skills, I used to program in Fortran on both IBM and Unix mainframes, and do some basic Unix system administration tasks. So, I should be able to manage this scripting task if given the right advice.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    E-Mac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    E-Mac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
E-Mac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Western Digital MyBook Firewire Drive

The issue isn't how to unmount the disk (that's the easy part), the problem is when to trigger it.
There is no standard mechanism for launching a script at shutdown, so there's no way to tell your script to run prior to the shutdown.
The best solution I can think of is a stay-open script that sits around doing nothing all day, until it quits. When it quits it unmounts the drive.
Under normal circumstances you wouldn't quit the script at all - just leave it running, but when the OS tells it to quit as part of the normal shutdown process it does its thing.
Here's one way of doing it:
    on run
    -- nothing to do here
    end run
    on idle
return 3600 -- do nothing, and dont' bother me again for an hour
    end idle
    on quit
    tell application "Finder"
    try
    eject disk "diskName"
    end try
    end tell
    continue quit
    end quit
The 'run' handler is executed when the script is launched, but there's nothing we need to do there.
The 'idle' handler is run periodically in the background - again, we don't need to do anything here, either. The return value tells AppleScript how long to wait before re-running the idle handler
The 'quit' handler does the work - as soon as it's called it unmounts the drive, then continues with the normal quit process.
Of course, there's no checking here to make sure you really are shutting down (vs. just quitting the script manually), so you might want to add some validation (prompt the user, maybe?). You'll notice I wrapped the eject command in a try block - that way it'll fail silently if the disk isn't mounted, otherwise it would post an error dialog "Can't get disk "diskName"".

  • Apple USB DVD burner ejects any blank disk

I have MacAir with OS Maveriks  10.9.1 and external Apple's USB DVD drive. The drive keeps ejecting any blank disk when inserted. Tried several. What is the problem? Both devices are 14 months old.
    Any help?

Ejects after several seconds then it a dirty laser diode lens
Ejects immediately then it's a damaged loader usually
Given its age, warranty work out of the question.  you may investigate the Ifixit.com videos on tearing down the ext superdrive for a lens cleaning or attempting same yourself without teardown.
I've fixed many myself, 9 times out of 10 its a dirty lens with dust.

  • How can I eject a virtual disk that keeps coming back?

For my MBP, with OS 10.6, I bought a WD eternal hard drive which comes with back-up software, "WD SmartWare." I use the Time Machine, and don't need other back-up software (I assume). A virtual disk holds the "SmartWare", and it shows on the desktop whenever the hard drive is connected.
Here's the problem: If I try to eject the virtual disk and the partitions that I've put on the drive, and put my MBP to sleep to move to another location, the virtual disk icon immediately reappears - it will not stay ejected. If I simply pull out the USB of the drive, pick up MBP and go about my business elsewhere, when I return and reconnect the drive I get a warning that I've disconnected the drive incorrectly and could lose data, hence "don't do that!"
So, so far the only way I can avoid the warning is to shut down the MBP and then disconnect the drive and leave. Then, the drive is happy.
Question: is there a way to eject the virtual drive so that it stays ejected, so I can disconnect the WD hard drive to allow me a change of physical location using sleep mode and not shut-down for the Mac?
    Tomas

if you use disk utility to delete all partitions on that drive and create a new partition and format it with mac os journalled your problem will be solved

  • Ejecting Time Machine disk will prompt to choose its partitions

By clicking to eject the TM disk my Mac asks which partition I'd like to eject. Of course, if really present, those partitions were automatically created by the Mac itself, not by me, thus asking me which one sounds useless to me!
Besides, Disk Utility shows only one partition, while others seem to be undisclosed.

I connected the backup drive, let it performing a backup, turned the TM feature off, launched Disk Utility, selected the icon of the drive (not the volume), clicked on Repair Disk (btw Repair Permissions button was greyed out), waited several minutes for the operation to complete and got the drive led stuck flashing. Tried to eject the disk and got the same prompt window, remounted the disk with Disk Utility, reactivated Time Machine, ejected the disk and the window didn't prompt.
For now it worked! Thank you.
    PS
I rewrote the whole procedure, in case someone reading this topic should not exactly understand what to do before and after what you suggested.

  • Cannot eject start-up Disk

Have tried all the various options concerning the ejection of a disk.
Starting with holding the C key down and holding the eject key down.
The disk appears to want to eject but stops at the last minute.
I had to insert the disk originally because of a message that I received
"No bootable Device insert boot disk"
I have recently upgraded my hard drive.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Norm

Have you reset PRAM? The startup disk setting is stored in PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Also, what happens if you try to start up from that disc?
Is it possible that the disk is being (physically) blocked from being ejected? If it seems that may be the case, you might try inserting something like an index card, something thin and a little (but not too) stiff about an inch into the slot, either angled slightly forward or slightly back; maybe this will allow the disc to be guided passed the obstruction (if there is one).

  • Read only permissions as an Admin & force ejection of osx disk; Other disk?

I have had problems with permissions on my computer for about 2 years now. In the past two years, I've reinstalled my OS about 10 times. In the past month, though, the problems have escalated. I can no longer burn my files to disk successfully because the disk is always ejected before the process can complete. This happened on occasion in the past, but now it happens every time.
I had an external biometric hard drive which I used to back up my files, but after about 10 months of use, it stopped working. I ordered a new one and sent the old one in for repair, but all of my backups were gone.
When I got the new one - it is smaller and more portable, which is a plus, it had already been formatted. I tried to reformat, but within minutes I had no control over my settings and even though I am listed as the only user, I had read only permission for the new drive and had no ability to change any system preferences.
Time to start from the Snow Leopard disk and try to repair permissions, etc. Did repair permissions and reset the permissions under the "Change Password" window in Utilities. When I tried to startup again, I only got a blue screen.
I have a firmware password, so when my drive wouldn't start, I tried again with the option key down and the startup disk in the optical drive - only to find it force ejected over an over. Then I noticed that not only were my two volumes visible, but another Network Server was fading in and out. Currently, my network was unplugged and I have never connected to an external server. Again, I should be the only user on my system.
I have returned the newest hard drive in exchange for a new one, but am uncertain of what to do now if I am unable to reinstall the OS. I have posted the photos I took with my iPhone to show the screen with the three volumes visible and will post the link shortly. Please help!

Image of the screen can be seen here: http://gallery.me.com/iphone/asrodrig1/100033#0

  • Mountain lion ejects external hard disks

After upgrading to Mountainlion (March 5, 2013), my LaCie external hard disk (500 GB, used for TimeMachine) was spontaneously and improperly ejected, presumably by the OS.
    (1) The disk had worked without problems under OS 10.7.
    (2) The disk mounts properly on an older Mac (OS 10.3.2).
    (3) The disk would not mount on a newer Mac also running OS 10.8.2.
I am currently reparing the disk using Disk Utility on the old Mac, but I hesitate to attempt mounting it again on my iMac (June 2008) running OS 10.8.3.  Can anyone shed light on this problem? I know I am not the only one with this difficulty, so is Apple doing something about it?

It is very probably dying (I just had to replace a Lacie disk 250GB form 2008).
This disk has originally been formatted on the 10.3 and then never again?
You can format it again on 10.8, but you will loose the TM backup, so if you do that you have to make a new TM on another disk.
I would no longer trust this disk, and buy another (5 years is not bad at all). Take all you want to preserve off the Lacie on the old machine and copy it to the ML machine.

  • How do I eject the install disk on the mini mac?

In wiping the mini mac, it keeps looping to the erase and install.  It won't allow me to shut down or eject the disk to put in the program disk.  When the screen gets to the Install Mac OS X, it won't show any disk (the Mac Mini) to install it.  I used the Utilities to erase and install, but I can't go any further.  It should install with a system lower than the OS X Yosemite.

  • Eject the install disk

Hi. Please help. My install disk appears to be hanging on the grey Apple screen at start-up. I've not yet installed Leopard. I just want to eject the disk. How do I get it out of the computer. I'm thinking I got a bad disk.
    Thanks. Dan

I can understand this to be a problem. The optical drive is barely reading the DVD, but just enough so it does not give up. Typically, a drive will re-read a sector several times if it experiences a problem. So imagine if much of the DVD had this film on it - - the installation might finally work, but only after the drive struggled with the DVD for a very long time. Also, at some point, the computer or drive might get really hot and make things worse.
I think this is one of the major problems people have been having, with no explanation until now.

  • Help, how Do I eject this miniature disk out of my iMac?

I unknowingly place a miniature disk into my Mac trying to install a program. It didn't seem to take it in as well as a regular sized disk. It won't seem to eject, I can see a bit of it. I'm sort of convinced to use a small tool to try and fish it out, good idea? .-.
    What do you recommend?

Same thing happened to me. I tried tweezers which didn't work and was about to go to Apple when I just tried to insert a normal cd. The normal cd seemed to push the mini DVD in and then the Imac spit it back out. I am not an Apple tech by any means and I dont want to mess up your computer, but it worked for me. Good luck.

  • My MBP keeps ejecting my install disks!

I thought I'd make backup copies of my SL disks, but the Machine keeps ejecting them. It reads other disks just fine, including the Tiger install disks off an iMac.
The SL disks will read fine in the iMac, but the MBP doesn't want them!
And once I've solved that, how do I copy them? On the iMac I keep getting the installer if I click on the disk icon.

The SL disks are DL DD DVD's. Perhaps your optical drive is having problems reading those. Take it to an Apple store or AASP.
How to Make a Non-Commercial DVD copy of MAC OS X
    Making a DVD Image:

Step 1. Insert the retail Mac OS X Install DVD into your drive.

Step 2. Launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).

Step 3. In Disk Utility, you will notice a white pane on the left hand side. In the pane, select the Mac OS X Install DVD by clicking on it once.

Step 4. Click New Image on the Disk Utility toolbar.

Step 5. A dialog box will appear. Give the new image a name. I used 'Mac OS X Install DVD'. Select the destination where you wish to save it. Leave Image Format at Compressed (default) and Encryption at None (default).

Step 6. Click Save to begin creating the image.

Step 7. Once your image has been created DO NOT mount it. Leave the image alone and proceed to the next section.

Burning the Image:

Step 1. Launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).

Step 2. Click Burn on the Disk Utility toolbar (upper left).

Step 3. Navigate to where you saved the DVD image created in the previous section. Click on the image file, then click the Burn button. Do not drag and drop the image file into Disk Utility during this step.

Step4. Insert a DVD when prompted and proceed to Burn it. (use good quality media).
